- In 1964, Arpad Elo released the first unofficial international Elo rating list, which was topped by Petrosian and Bobby Fischer with ratings of 2690.
- At the age of fifty, he became (together with Portisch and Hübner) the winner of the Interzonal chess tournament.
- Petrosian is considered to be the best player in the world at using his pawns in attack and defense.
- In 2004, FIDE declared a year in memory of Tigran Petrosian, in honor of which the Tigran Petrosian medal was established, rewarding trainers for special achievements.
- Two famous systems bear his name: the Petrosian Variation in the Queen's Indian Defense and the Petrosian System in the Old Indian Defense.
- At ten World Chess Olympiads, held from 1958 to 1978, he showed an incredible result: he won 79 times, drew 50 times and lost only once. This indicator remains one of the best in the history of the Chess Olympiads.
