Seth Meyers Writers Heading to The Kennedy Center
Image
The writers behind Late Night with Seth Meyers are taking their comedy to Washington D.C. this summer — Just don’t tell Seth.

“Don’t Tell Seth! An Evening with the Seth Meyers Writers” will come to the Kennedy Center on June 14-15, as part of its Comedy at the Kennedy Center programming.

Hosted by writers John Lutz and Peter Grosz, the variety show will feature standup comedy, sketches, audience interaction, and improv from Late Night scribes Matt Goldich, Jenny Hagel, Jeff Wright, Allison Hord, Ben Warheit, and Ian Morgan.

“Unshackled from the confines of network censors and what Seth thinks is ‘appropriate’ for his show,” the event description teases, “they are finally free to let loose!”

Seth’s writers are familiar faces on Late Night, often appearing on the program in sketches and desk segments like “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell.” But this isn’t the first time they...

TV Academy Returns the Variety Series Writing Emmy to Telecast
Image
After Writers Guild of America waged a protest regarding the Television Academy‘s decision to move the outstanding writing for a variety series or special categories out of the upcoming Emmy telecast, the TV Academy has reversed course.

In a joint release sent out today, the Television Academy, Fox and the WGA said they were “happy to announce they have reached an agreement to include the Writing for a Variety Series category in the 75th Emmy Awards telecast airing live on Fox on January 15, 2024, at 8pm Est / 5pm Pst.”

Because this year’s Primetime Emmys has moved the variety special (live) category into the telecast (it was on the Creative Arts show last year), the TV Academy was likely looking to keep the telecast capped at 25 awards, so something had to fall out. And in this case, it was the variety writing field that originally got pushed to the Creative Arts ceremony.

‘Mapleworth Murders’: Quibi Comedic Murder Mystery Sets Jb Smoove & Hayley Magnus As Regulars; Fey, Oswalt, Samberg Among Guests
Hayley Magnus in Childhood's End : Les Enfants d'Icare (2015)
Jb Smoove and Hayley Magnus are set as series regulars and more than 20 others will recur or guest on Mapleworth Murders, Quibi’s shortform comedic murder-mystery from former Saturday Night Live writers John Lutz and Paula Pell.

Written by and starring Pell and Lutz, Mapleworth Murders centers on Abigail Mapleworth (Pell), a murder-mystery writer who solves homicides in her quaint small town of New Woodstream. Each episode of the comedic crime procedural will feature guest victims and suspects as we answer the bigger question of the series: Why the hell are there so many murders in one small town?

Executive producers include SNL vets Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers.

Among the actors set to recur on the series from Universal Television are a trio former SNL castmembers Fred Armisen, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph. Also cast as recurrings are Patton Oswalt, Jack McBrayer, D’Arcy Carden, Pam Murphy, Ben Warheit, Annie Mumolo,...

Café Society (2016)
Film Review: Woody Allen’s ‘A Rainy Day In New York’
Café Society (2016)
Two films ago, with “Café Society,” Woody Allen opened Cannes. Last time out, with 2017’s “Wonder Wheel,” he closed the New York Film Festival. His latest film, the first casualty of the squealing-brakes reversal when Amazon Studios pulled out of their four-picture deal with the scandal-buffeted director, premiered a month ago in one Eastern European territory prior to a spotty regional rollout and an opening slot at France’s upcoming Deauville Festival of American Film. With the greatest of respect to Deauville, not to mention the nation of Poland, the herky-jerk release of “A Rainy Day In New York” would seem like a step down. Until you watch it and realize it may be significantly more generous than the film merits.

Despite featuring some of the best actors of their respective generations, “A Rainy Day in New York” feels like a film born of profound creative exhaustion. It is a...

Seth Meyers Reveals How He Convinced Rihanna to Day Drink With Him
Seth Meyers at an event for Portlandia (2011)
Seth Meyers has made no secret of his love for Rihanna. As the “Late Night” host told Jimmy Fallon in February, he’s “fully in love” with the pop star slash business mogul (he clarified that his wife is fine with it because “she’s also in love with Rihanna — it’s what we have in common”). And yet he never was able to get Rihanna to come on his show until this week, when Meyers revealed that he had spent Wednesday shooting back tequila with her for his “Day Drinking” segment, in which the host gets ridiculously drunk with a celebrity guest instead of sitting through a traditional interview.

“Day Drinking with Rihanna,” in all its messy glory, aired on Thursday’s show in lieu of a monologue. Within just a few hours of shooting, Meyers and Rihanna downed themed drinks, practiced pickup lines, tried out her Fenty Beauty makeup line,...

Late Night with Seth Meyers (2014)
‘Late Night Casserole’ Is the Most Gleefully Bizarre 12 Minutes of TV You’ll See This Week – Watch
Late Night with Seth Meyers (2014)
Political monologues, celebrity interviews, and engineered viral bits may be the preferred late night currency these days. But every few months, something so delightfully weird happens in the wee hours of the broadcast schedule that it feels worthy of celebrating.

The latest in a distinct “Late Night with Seth Meyers” tradition of all-encompassing, chaos-embracing segments is “Late Night Casserole,” a collection of jokes and premises that might not necessarily work if presented on their own. But when smushed together over the span of a dozen minutes of insanity, it’s one of the best examples of what can happen when a late night show removes all its restraints.

“Late Night Casserole” is a spiritual sibling of “Joke Bucket,” whose praises we’ve sung in the past. One thing that connects the two is Meyers’ demeanor, the preemptory, apologetic nature of the way he introduces each successive part of the whole thing.

When Did Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus Start Dating? The Complicated Timeline of Their Romance
Ben Affleck
Some reports suggest Ben Affleck and girlfriend Lindsay Shookus' relationship may have been going on even while they were still married to their respective spouses.

A source tells Et that Affleck first saw Shookus while he was still married to Jennifer Garner, and Shookus was married to Kevin Miller -- a fellow Saturday Night Live producer. According to the source, Affleck and Shookus were seeing one another as far back as late 2014, months before news broke that he had an alleged fling with his children's nanny, Christine Ouzounian. Affleck's reported dalliance with the nanny happened in the summer of 2015, and was short-lived, our source says.

However, a source close to 44-year-old Affleck disputes that the actor and Shookus got together while both were married, although the two were friendly. The source says the two got romantic after his separation from Garner in 2015.

The Best of Broadcast TV, So Far
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Before we get too far in, let us say this: There are so many more shows coming out. Even limiting our list to the upcoming debuts on broadcast TV, we still have “Timeless,” “No Tomorrow,” “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Man With a Plan,” to name just a few.

But over the past few weeks, Fall TV has kicked into high gear. With prominent new releases like “Lethal Weapon,” “Designated Survivor” and “Pitch” as well as low-profile favorites like “Speechless” and “Son of Zorn,” there’s been a lot of new options to sift through. Which ones should you be watching? Which shows should you skip? Which pilots are worth sampling, and which series should have a permanent slot on your DVR?

Best of Late Night TV: Bad Pictionary With LL Cool J, Rose Byrne, Big Sean; 'Full House' Spinoff Reveal (Video)
If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

LL Cool J, Rose Byrne, and Big Sean were on "The Tonight Show" with Jimmy Fallon Monday night, and Jimmy had them play Pictionary. LL and Rose were partners and Jimmy and Big Sean were partners. LL admitted he could not draw and ... he was right. Watch what happens when he's supposed to draw a tattoo and instead draws something vaguely phallic-looking and starts swearing and has to be bleeped out. It was bad. Rose was good, not that it helped them. John Stamos was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and gave Jimmy the "exclusive" on the "Full House" return, which is coming to Netflix. "It starts sort of as...

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

"Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Tuesday night, and one of her videos included a clip from Season 5, which starts in just a couple of weeks on HBO. Maisie started playing Arya when she was 12, which is too young to watch the show, but she watched it with her whole family. They had to get her gran drunk when the boob scenes came on! She trained herself to sword-fight left-handed, since that's how Arya was written and that's what the fans expected. She admitted she hasn't read the GoT books ("A Song of Ice and Fire"), though. The second video shares the...

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Monday night marked James Corden's debut as the new "Late Late Show" host, replacing Craig Ferguson. Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis were his first guests, and you can see they redesigned the set so they're all just sitting next to each other. And so "Parks and Recreation" has come to an end.
