10 Confusing Anime That Only Make Less Sense The More You Watch

Many anime have well-thought-out plots, full of intrigue and plot twists. Their stories are crafted by masters who want to leave an impact on manga and anime fans. However, just because many anime value their storytelling, the same cannot be said of every anime.

Other anime prefer to leave fans surprised and bewildered with random happenstances that make less and less sense the more the series progresses. While a good story is entertaining at times, sometimes fans prefer nonsensical fun that leaves them scratching their heads.

10 Anime Where the Side Characters Are Cooler Than the Heroes

In most anime shows, the spotlight shines the brightest on the main character, focusing on their journey of growth, redemption, power, etc. However, there are some series that feature strong anime side-characters who can effortlessly steal the show, even outshining the heroes and becoming fan favorites.

Whether through their heartbreaking backstories, unique abilities, or charismatic personalities not bound by “main-character tropes,” these are the side characters that have left a lasting impact on audiences and stepped out from under the shadow of their lead.

Anime Review: Oshi no Ko Season 1 (2023) by Daisuke Hiramaki
Image
According to the producer Shimpei Yamashita, all the team members of the studio Doga Kobo happened to love the “Oshi no Ko” seinen manga written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. This shared passion became the foundation of a solid relationship and trust between the artists who worked at Doga Kobo’s in-house compositing team for roughly two and a half years in adapting Akasaka’s work. The first episode of the anime series came in the form of a feature-length film of 90 minutes during the Spring 2023 season, and it reconstructs the flow of the whole first volume of the comic book. The director, Daisuke Hiramaki, and the assistant director, Chao Nekotomi, enriched the animation and the storyline of the series with many artistic details and won the Drama Anime of the Year prize during the 10th Anime Trending Awards.

10 Best Anime For Fans of the Beauty and the Beast
Image
Anime is no stranger to fairy tale tropes. Depending on what series fans check out, they'll find everything from twists on familiar tales, like Snow White with the Red Hair, to classics told in a different setting, like My Happy Marriage. It's only natural that some anime would take the typical Beauty and the Beast trope and pair someone sweet with a monstrous soul.

However, there are many ways one can write a trope. Some monstrous souls are simply ordinary humans that don't match beauty standards. Others are little monsters or beasts. Some even have curses cast on them. No matter how the anime displays this familiar trope, Beauty and the Beast is always a lovable classic to fall back on.

10 Disturbing Anime Endings That'll Make You Sick to Your Stomach
Image
After a long journey of trials and tribulations, most anime heroes arrive at their well-deserved happy ending, having defeated their adversaries and restored peace in the world. However, not all stories in anime follow uplifting fantasies with joyful finales. Some of anime’s best and most emotionally resonant narratives tap into much darker themes in their conclusions, leaving fans and heroes to bear the weight of cruel, disturbing epilogues.

These kinds of endings stick with audiences - for better or worse - long after the credits roll, their subversive and disquieting nature defying expectations by refusing to give audiences the satisfaction of a gratifying resolution. Be it a shocking final twist that snatches victory from the hands of the heroes at the last moment or an expectedly devastating climax to a narrative swarming with despair, anime’s cruelest and most disturbing endings can be controversial - yet never cannot have an impact.

10 Strongest Anime Villains That Dragon Ball's Krillin Can Easily Defeat

Krillin may not be strong enough to beat many of Dragon Ball's notable villains, but he can easily defeat villains from other anime series.

Most of these anime villains possess supernatural abilities, but Krillin's Ki can easily overpower these abilities. Many of these villains are human fighters, and Krillin can evade most of their attacks with his superhuman reflexes, and his superhuman strength would enable him to knock several of them out with just one or two punches.

10 Shojo Anime That Went Too Far (But Fans Still Loved It)
Image
Shojo is technically a demographic; it's anime and manga written and marketed for a young, female audience. It's also referenced almost as a wider genre of its own, because shojo anime follows certain conventions, like telling romance and character-driven (rather than plot-driven) stories. Some shojo stories are incredibly melodramatic, to where fans often compare them to soap-operas.

Fans enjoy those shojo titles for the drama. They push the envelope, and keep the audience hooked, making them wonder what could happen next. Not all zany anime is written equally. While some anime are poorly written but enjoyed for their shock value and humor, others are well-written soap operas with nuance and purpose.

Hunter x Hunter Sparks Debate Following Its Recent Australian Ban
Image
Hunter x Hunter's new fighting game, Nen x Impact has been banned in Australia due to suggestions of sexual violence against minors according to a recent report. Though Hunter x Hunter is a believed series among anime fans, one of the series' main antagonists, Hisoka, remains a controversial aspect. It seems that controversy has now boiled over, with Hisoka's disquieting antics meaning that Bushiroad and Eighting's Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact won't receive classification in Australia, effectively banning the game.

In a report by Automaton Media, the Australian Classification board specifically said that it wouldn't classify the new game with its rating system due to "sexual violence against characters under the age of 18 by an adult male character." While the board doesn't clarify, anyone familiar with the series will know that the likely culprit is Hisoka. While this is obviously disappointing for Australian fans of Hunter x Hunter...

10 Best Isekai Set in Non-Fantasy Worlds, Ranked
Image
Isekai is one of the most popular and oversaturated genres anime has ever seen. Many isekai, such as Re:Zero or Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, follow the standard blueprint of a character being transported to another world, often filled with magic, mythical creatures, knights and a medieval setting. However, not all series follow this blueprint.

Some shows take a unique perspective on the isekai genre away from the fantasy world. From futuristic dystopias to modern-day Japan, anime like Ya Boy Kongming! and Ascendance of a Bookworm offer a twist on the isekai genre and prove that a journey to another world can be just as thrilling without dragons and sorcery.

10 Anime with Endless Halloween Costume Ideas
Image
Halloween is coming up and now is the time to find inspiration for a costume and finalize online orders. Thanks to anime's ever-growing popularity, many retailers stock pre-fabricated Naruto and Demon Slayer costumes that are as easy as click-and-collect. Some people will get creative and make a low-effort costume or go all-out like Heidi Klum and invest in an over-the-top outfit. Luckily, anime provides endless references to draw from, especially for couple and group costumes, theme parties, or just showing off pop-culture literacy.

The easiest anime references are the iconic school uniforms, which are not only required attire at Japanese schools but are a symbol of youth and one's formative years. Sailor Moon, Dan Da Dan, and Neon Genesis Evangelion all feature fairly basic uniforms that can be made with plaid skirts, white button-downs, and a tie or bow. Other anime characters can be captured simply with a cool suit,...

Oshi no Ko Season 2, Episode 11 Ruins Aqua's Newfound Joy With Looming Darkness
Image
The following contains mild spoilers for Oshi no Ko Season 2, Episode 11 "Freedom."

In last week's episode, Oshi no Ko Season 2 seemingly implied that Aqua Hoshino's years-long plot for revenge by infiltrating the shady Japanese entertainment industry was futile and over before he even knew it. Apparently, the estranged father he was determined to kill as revenge for his murdered mother, the legendary idol Ai Hoshino, died by suicide years ago. Even if Season 2, Episode 10 "Liberation" went through great lengths to show that Aqua was now free from his self-imposed pursuit of vengeance, it was obvious that this wasn't the case.

It didn't take long for the anime to prove viewers' doubts from last week right, as Oshi no Ko Season 2, Episode 11 "Freedom" pulled the rug from under Aqua without him even realizing it. That said, the episode was in no rush to do this. Instead, it took its time by...
