One of Mike Flanagan’s Best Horror Films Is Now Streaming For Free and We’re Surprsied
Image
Streaming is a great convince, but every convenience comes at a cost. In this case, the cost comes in the form of accessibility. Sure, you’ve got tons of options at your fingertips, but what happens when one of your favorite films is no longer available to stream? That’s precisely what happened with Mike Flanagan’s Hush. The film was a Netflix exclusive for several years, but when the licensing deal expired, the film became unavailable to watch anywhere. Fortunately, Hush is more widely accessible now than ever. The picture is currently available on both physical media and streaming.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the saga, I’ll provide some context. Netflix previously owned the exclusive rights to Hush. When the deal expired, fans were understandably bummed because that meant that Hush wasn’t available to watch anywhere. That makes the film’s eventual re-addition to streaming (not...

Hush: Mike Flanagan film gets a 4K and Blu-ray release that’s packed with extras
Image
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan believes that “Physical media is critical,” which is not a belief that was shared by his former employers at the Netflix streaming service. Flanagan recently said that he tried very hard to get Netflix to release the work he did for them on Blu-ray and DVD, but they “refused at every turn.” But while several Flanagan projects remain on Netflix and aren’t available on physical media, he did confirm earlier this year that he has taken his 2016 film Hush away from the streaming service so he can give it a long-awaited physical media release. The 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release is coming from Scream Factory on November 26th (copies are available for purchase at This Link) – and they have just revealed that this physical media release of the movie is going to be packed with extras!

Hush has the following synopsis: After losing her hearing as a teenager,...

Horror Filmmaker Mike Flanagan Names the Last Movie That Truly Scared Him
Image
Mike Flanagan has been the mastermind behind some of the scariest movies and television shows in recent years. However, this has not made the filmmaker immune to getting the creeps himself.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan revealed the name of the last movie that scared him, "The last one that truly frightened me into getting up off of the couch was an Australian movie, Lake Mungo," he said. "It chilled me to the bone. There are others, like this French film Martyrs. There's a lot of gore, but it's gore with a point. I generally don't love splatter," the filmmaker explained.

Hush now has an official digital release date after being removed from Netflix in April 2023. Shout! Studios will distribute the movie on VOD beginning August 27, 2024. The movie laid the groundwork for many beloved Mike Flanagan projects to come.

Mike Flanagan's early feature Hush now has an official digital release date. The movie follows a deaf woman being tormented by a killer while on a writing retreat in an isolated cabin. It was well-received by critics, earning a Certified Fresh 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was so popular that it has been remade twice in India, once in Hindi with 2019's Khamoshi and then in Tamil as Kolaiyuthir Kaalam the same year. The Mike Flanagan movie premiered on Netflix in 2016, but was removed from the platform in April 2023 when the streamer's rights expired.

Hush: Mike Flanagan is planning a physical media release for his 2016 film

During an appearance at the Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas, Flanagan said (with thanks to Slash Film for the transcription), “We took it back because I really value physical media. And Netflix, by policy, it does not work in their business plan. So we took it back. We do have a new home for it.

Hush Review
Mike Flanagan is a man who needs less of an introduction with each horror film he makes, as dictated by the positive buzz surrounding Absentia and Oculus. Audiences latch on to his tight direction and simplistically sinister visuals, to the point where any conversation about up-and-coming genre filmmakers is usually started with his name. He quickly found himself courted by Jason Blum and Trevor Macy, which led to a few yet-to-be-released features, and the chance to right Ouija‘s wrongs through a much more adept sequel. Flanagan’s a hot commodity, and his latest film, Hush proves why – to a degree.

Admittedly, I’m positively lukewarm on both Absentia and Oculus, and Hush evoked an almost mirrored reaction. Flanagan is a talented filmmaker, as he’s able to market easily-digestible stories (some more than others) with an engaging plethora of taught, tense shot selection. He’s a dream director for mainstream horror,...

‘Hush’ Review
Stars: Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, Emma Graves | Written by Mike Flanagan, Kate Siegel | Directed by Mike Flanagan

Horror movies centered on home invasions are much more likely to terrify me than ones about ghosts and zombies, and that’s mostly because, well, there’s nothing unrealistic about the idea of someone breaking into your home and terrorizing you – if you ever watch the news, you know it happens all the time. How do you make that simple premise even scarier? Giving the character-in-peril a disability is a damn fine start, whether you’re rendering her blind (Wait Until Dark) or arming her with a fear that literally makes her unable to leave her home (this year’s Intruders).

Co-written by Kate Siegel and Mike Flanagan, and directed by Flanagan, Hush tells the story of Maddie, a deaf and mute young woman who lives alone out in the woods.
