James Acaster Jokingly Accuses Seth Meyers of Stealing Other Comics’ Jokes
Image
James Acaster is criminally underknown here in the U.S., though he boasts a cadre of devoted fans back in Britain. There, he's known for comedy based in a punk ethos and a complete inability to follow written directions. He’s on a press tour at the moment for his new HBO special, Hecklers Welcome, which brought him to Seth Meyers’ side on a recent episode of Late Night.

There, I think it’s this exact punk stubbornness and the freedom that his comparatively lower profile affords that makes him an excellent guest. It gives him a little more freedom to be genuinely funny in a borderline antagonistic way, the way the best Letterman guests were. I’m sure those pranks on set were hilarious in the moment, but watching yet another movie star sit there, legs crossed in a specific way that has to be part of PR training?...

Jason Mantzoukas Has All the Time in the World to Answer ‘Taskmaster’ Questions
Image
Rafi in The League. Dennis Feinstein in Parks and Recreation. Adrian Pimento in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Derek in The Good Place. If you’ve watched or listened to comedy at any point in the past 15 years or so, you’ve seen and almost certainly been delighted by Jason Mantzoukas. Now the seemingly fearless self-described “maniac” is taking on what may be his biggest challenge yet: the 19th season of Taskmaster.

The British panel show has previously included an American player — Desiree Burch, who appeared in Season 12 — but she’s an ex-pat living in the U.K.; Mantzoukas will be the first American who commuted to star in the show alongside fellow cast members Matthew Baynton, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Stevie Martin and Rosie Ramsey.

When we talked over Zoom last month, Mantzoukas graciously let me go over our allotted time asking every non-spoilery question I had about the new season. So yes, we...

Jason Mantzoukas Causes Competitive Chaos in ‘Taskmaster’ Season 19 Images [Exclusive]
Image
What happens when you take five comedians, put them in a miniscule, eclectic house in Chiswick and tell them to make a fool out of themselves for the entertainment of millions? Well, Taskmaster of course! The comedy competition series returns for its nineteenth season on May 1, and Collider is excited to premiere some exclusive images of competitor Jason Mantzoukas as he takes on the insanity of the British panel series.

The images don’t give us a great idea of what kinds of tasks Mantzoukas and the rest of the contestants will be put through over the course of ten episodes, but they do give us a great idea of the energy he’s bringing going into things. He revealed on former competitors James Acaster and Ed Gamble’s podcast Off Menu that he’s a huge fan of the long-running competition series — which has also featured comedians like Noel Fielding,...

Today on Where There’s A Will, There’s A Wake, Kathy Burke announced her departure from the chart-topping podcast. After insisting “you’ll get 20 episodes out of me”, Kathy went on to host over 100 episodes, achieve millions of downloads and present a sell-out live show.

In true Kathy-style, she shared a foul-mouthed farewell to her loyal listeners, saying:

“So, lovely listeners, my darling deathlings. You know, I'm an old fk now, we all know that. Anyway, the thing is, my darlings, I've decided I have to say goodbye to this fantastic podcast. And the reason is [...] I've loved this job so much. But I said to [Exec Producer] Big God Ollie...

Florence Pugh Reveals Why She ‘Can’t Do’ Roles Like ‘Midsommar’ Again
Image
Florence Pugh has never been afraid to go to extremes for films, whether it’s shaving her head for “We Live in Time” or going nude in her Oscar-nominated role in “Oppenheimer.” But the actress says she would never go as far as she did in Aria Aster’s 2019 horror film, “Midsommar. “

“There have been some roles where I’ve given too much and I’ve been broken for a long while afterwards. Like when I did ‘Midsommar,’ I definitely felt like I abused myself in the places that I got myself to go,” Pugh said, speaking on the most recent episode of the “Reign with Josh Smith” podcast.

“I don’t think I’d be able to do this without going there all the way and putting myself in all of those characters that I’ve played. There’s always a piece of me,” the actress said on a...

Late Night with Seth Meyers calls it quits for 2024
Image
Late Night with Seth Meyers is done ... for now. The late-night TV show behind "A Closer Look" has closed up shop for the year.

And what a year it was for Late Night with Seth Meyers. An election year is a long year for the entire country, and things were no different for Seth Meyers and his team.

So even if it weren't the holidays, we'd expect Meyers and everyone else at Late Night to take a break. The show wrapped up its 2024 last week and now looks to recharge.

NBC will air rerun episodes starting Monday, December 23, during Late Night's normal timeslot. The first one up is a repeat of the October 8 show featuring Nathan Lane, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Amelia Dimoldenberg.

Appearances by the Meyers family, Liam Neeson, Jenny Slate, Tim O'Brien, Jim Gaffigan, and Allison Tolman are also on the schedule this week. The network also plans...

‘Like Comedians in Cars for Less Successful People’: Chloe Radcliffe Rides ‘In Tandem’ With Roy Wood Jr., Ralph Barbosa and Other Comics in New Interview Series (Exclusive)
Image
Chloe Radcliffe has launched a new interview series titled “In Tandem,” in which she takes comics such as Roy Wood Jr., Jordan Jensen and James Acaster on bicycle rides through Central Park and along the Los Angeles River.

“It’s like ‘Comedians in Cars’ for less successful people,” Radcliffe jokes, in reference to Jerry Seinfeld’s coffee and automobile-themed talk series that has featured the likes of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Barack Obama.

Radcliffe, who starred in Steven Soderbergh’s “Command Z” and is currently touring with her one-woman show “Cheat,” describes “In Tandem,” which launched Nov. 27 with first guest Ralph Barbosa, as a “cheery, awkward and funny interview series that never breaks 10 miles per hour.”

“Because we aren’t making eye contact, I think people can relax a little bit,” Radcliffe tells Variety. “And because they have something physical to focus on, it’s easier for people to let their guard down.

‘Hecklers Welcome’ Challenges James Acaster to Embrace Even His Rowdiest Fans
Image
It feels uncontroversial to say that, between the time Covid lockdowns were ordered and the time restrictions were lifted, a lot of us forgot how to behave in public. Customers are surly with cashiers. Passengers won’t follow instructions on planes. Audience members fail to remain quiet during live shows — or do they? If James Acaster’s new special, Hecklers Welcome, is anything to go by, maybe a comedy audience is only as obnoxious as the comic they’re seeing, even when said comic explicitly gives them license to pop off.

Acaster has been prominent in British comedy for around a decade and has already racked up a season of Taskmaster, his own panel show (Hypothetical), several podcasts (most notably Off Menu With Ed Gamble and James Acaster) and a few books, among many other credits. Hecklers Welcome, premiering on HBO November 23rd, is his third special. No one who...

James Acaster Lets the Audience Misbehave in New HBO Comedy Special ‘Hecklers Welcome’
Image
James Acaster has announced his first HBO comedy special, titled “Hecklers Welcome.”

The stand-up hour will debut on HBO and Max on Nov. 23 and will find the British comic exploring his “love/hate relationship with stand-up by relinquishing control of his set and accepting a healthy dose of audience interference – aka heckling.”

During his previous show, “Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999,” Acaster faced an increased number of hecklers, leading him to question whether he wanted to continue performing stand-up comedy. With “Hecklers Welcome,” which he has been touring since 2022, Acaster has cleverly surrendered to unruly audience members.

Per the logline, “With his wiry observational eye and incomparable wit, Acaster shares hilarious on-the-fly meta-analysis of his own material, along with stories from his childhood that spurred him to pursue a career in comedy — from his participation in his grandmother’s spinning wheel workshop at school to his impersonation of Prince Charles at age six.

HBO Sets James Acaster Comedy Special
Image
James Acaster has invited his hecklers to HBO.

In fact, he’s formally titled the new hour James Acaster: Hecklers Welcome. The special, debuting on HBO and Max later this month, marks the British comic’s first special for the platform, and shows him relinquishing control of his set and accepting a generous helping of audience interference. He’s said to have taped it at the Royal & Derngate theater in his native Northampton, England.

“Performing in the round, in a theater I went to growing up, with the audience chipping in whenever they felt like it, meant this was the most I’ve enjoyed filming a special, and I’m delighted it’s coming to HBO,” Acaster said in a statement. “Also, I jumped onto the stage via a trampoline and I don’t want that to go unacknowledged.”

As the hour’s logline suggests, the special has him sharing...

Image
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire finds success on Netflix after disappointing at the box office with only $201 million. The sequel features the Spengler family teaming up with the original Ghostbusters. Despite mixed reviews and criticisms, the film resonated with audiences on Netflix due to nostalgic elements and a multi-generational cast.

Review: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Image
The surprise success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife breathed new life into a moribund franchise, giving us a new generation of supernatural sleuths to cheer for. It was very touching to see the original quartet suit up one more time and kick ghostly ass. But, it was clear the torch was being passed to Egon Spengler’s daughter, Callie) Carrie Coon, and her children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), along with their science teacher Gary Gooberson (Paul Rudd). With her inheritance of the original Ghostbusters HQ, the stage was set.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the result, and the film, out now on streaming and disc, is a hodge-podge of characters, concepts, and conundrums that are so filled with characters the emotional undercurrents are given the shortest of shrift.

Phoebe is clearly the genius, the true heir to Egon, but her youthfulness gets her sidelined by Mayor Walter Peck (William Atherton...

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, William Atherton, James Acaster | Written by Gil Kenan, Jason Reitman | Directed by Gil Kenan

The Ghostbusters are back in New York for the second instalment of the sequel-slash-reboot series, following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This time round, it’s directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Jason Reitman. Effectively energised by the New York setting, the sequel has evidently learned from the disastrous mistakes of the previous film and emerges as an entertaining adventure in its own right, though it’s not entirely without problems.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire jumps right into the Ghostbusting action, with the new team – former science teacher Gary Groobersom (Paul Rudd), Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) and her two teenage children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace...

Every Ghostbusters Movie, Ranked
Image
The "Ghostbusters" franchise has been kicking around since 1984, thanks to director Ivan Reitman and the comedic bona fides of primary cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (who also co-wrote the script), with a little help from Ernie Hudson as the blue collar guy who makes it easy for things to be explained to the audience. But the film series lay dormant for nearly 20 years, until Sony Pictures attempted to reboot the entire franchise from scratch in 2016 with Paul Feig's new "Ghostbusters," which would go on to get the subtitle "Answer the Call." More recently, "Ghostbusters" has been given new life, thanks to the nostalgic legacy-quel "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and a new narrative thread following the once-estranged family of the late Egon Spengler.

Among the five total "Ghostbusters" movies released so far, we have a fascinating spectrum of storytelling, both in quality and style. While the original paranormal-infused...

Politics Uncensored brings a new, younger perspective on UK politics from unfiltered voices
Image
With General Election campaigning in full swing, young people feel more disenfranchised in politics than ever. Speaking to this, the turnout at the 2019 General Election amongst 18–24-year-olds was just 47%, compared to 74% of over-65s. Politics Uncensored, hosted by Ali Milani on Fubar Radio, the premier talk radio station for Gen Z and Millennials, offers a platform for young people to discuss the issues that matter to them. The show gives a voice to those usually silenced by mass media, aiming to challenge the perception of a disillusioned youth by speaking to the campaigners and politicians trying to make a difference in Westminster and beyond. Duncan Smith, CEO of Fubar Radio, discusses how the show aims to reignite interest in politics amongst young people.

With guests including Yaz Ashmawi - the protestor representing “People Demand Democracy” who gained notoriety for pouring glitter over Sir Keir Starmer at the Labour Conference in...

Warning: Spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Screen Rant

Screen Rant interviewed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire star Mckenna Grace tied to the film's digital release. Grace discussed her favorite relationships in the film and what she'd like to see going foward. The actor also detailed the making of one of the film's setpiece action sequences.

Even more so than the movie that relaunched the franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a juggling act. The movie brought the new generation of the Spengler family to New York City to tell a story that reunited the original Ghostbusters and brought exciting new players into the fold. Director Gil Kenan and producer and co-writer Jason Reitman (who directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and whose father directed the first Ghostbusters) managed to deliver a film that felt true to the rest of the franchise even as it expanded on what was...

Mckenna Grace & Gil Kenan talk to HeyUGuys about fan reaction to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire & more
Mckenna Grace
At just 17, McKenna Grace already has a number of TV and movie hits on her hands. From starring in the charming drama-comedy Gifted in 2017 to her career defining role as a child bride in the popular dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale, Grace has accumulated praise from all corners of the industry.

Recently, McKenna returned for a second helping in the latest instalment of the rebooted Ghostbusters franchise as Phoebe. In a conversation with HeyUGuys earlier this week, the young actor talked to us about her reaction to the insane Ghostbusters fandom and her time on the film’s press tour alongside.

We also spoke to director Gil Kenan about working alongside his friend Jason Reitman on the second instalment of this very daring reboot of a much loved franchise. Kenan talked about swapping roles with Reitman who directed the first film in the current series. He also spoke about working with James Acaster,...

UK-Ireland box office preview: Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ climbs into 592 cinemas
Image
Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.

Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.

Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Review

Box office: ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ captures third $45 million plus March opening
Image
Obviously, blasting March with franchise sequels was the way to turn things around after a number of slower months at the box office. Read on for the weekend box office report.

The big new release for the weekend was Sony’s sequel, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which opened in 4,345 theaters, with much of the returning cast from 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and McKenna Grace, as well as many of the original Ghostbusters from Ivan Reitman‘s ’80s comedies. It also introduced new characters played by comics Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, and James Acaster.

By Thursday, the movie had only racked up 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, showing less critical support than “Afterlife,” but it still was able to open with $16 million on Friday, including $4.7 million in Thursday previews. Sony has estimated an opening weekend of $45.2 million for the action-comedy, averaging just over $10,000 per location, just slightly ahead of “Afterlife’s” $44 million opening,...

Ghostbusters franchise could expand with globe-trotting adventures
Image
The Ghostbusters: Afterlife (watch it Here) sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (which, of course, also serves as a sequel to the original Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II) is now in theatres – and in the review of the film that was written by JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray (you can read it at This Link), Bumbray said that it feels like it was “aimed at building the franchise out more extensively.” While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, franchise co-creator Dan Aykroyd hinted that we could see the franchise expand with globe-trotting adventures.

Aykroyd said, “We like New York, but that’s not to say that we couldn’t make New York the base and travel off somewhere else. But… hey, there are ghosts around the world.“

While the first two films and Frozen Empire are set in New York, Afterlife took place in Oklahoma. It sounds like Aykroyd wouldn’t mind seeing the...

UK-Ireland box office preview: Sony calls ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, ‘Immaculate’ also opens
Image
Spooky titles lead the new openers at the UK and Ireland box office this weekend with Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire unleashing into 687 cinemas.

The fifth addition to the ghoul-hunting franchise is slightly up from its predecessor Ghostbusters: Afterlife which opened in 670 locations in 2021. That film had an opening weekend of £3.7m and ended shy of £12m. It also has more locations than Paul Feig’s female reboot which debuted in 581 sites in 2016 before making £4.4m in its opening weekend.

The first Ghostbusters made an impressive £12.4m at the box office back in 1984 while Ghostbusters II scored £8.3m in 1989.

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Review
Image
Finn Wolfhard, Celeste O’Connor, Paul Rudd, Kamail Nanjiani, Logan Kim, and Carrie Coon in ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’

To succeed, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire needed to be fun and capture the spirit of the original Ghostbusters. It was and it did – with caveats. Seeing the Og Ghostbusters team strapping on their proton packs was a hoot, but this latest installment in the franchise made some odd plot choices. It also sticks around half an hour too long.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, a direct sequel to Afterlife, finds the Spengler family – teens Phoebe and Trevor, plus mom Callie – and former teacher-turned-ghostbuster Gary Grooberson moving into the iconic NYC headquarters. The foursome’s kept hopping, responding to kooky undead creatures, including a sewer dragon. If there’s something strange in the neighborhood, they’re on the case. Why? As Gary says, quoting the “Ghostbusters” lyrics, because bustin’ makes him feel good. (That’s just one...

It’s Officially Time to Stop Calling the ‘Ghostbusters’
Image
Forty years ago, four men put on uniforms, came up with a catchy logo — a startled specter in a red circle with a slash going through it, no big whoop — strapped on some proton packs and saved New York City from an evil deity holed up in a penthouse. They were brave, they were bold, they were smartasses and, we can’t stress this part enough, they weren’t ‘fraid of no ghosts. It’s not a Stay Puft Marshmellow Man-sized leap to say that Ivan Reitman’s original Ghostbusters changed Hollywood blockbusters.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Review: Bustin’ Just Doesn’t Feel As Good Anymore
Image
Why do these new Ghostbusters movies land so unremarkably? Not Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot, which was attacked by pissant trolls. My opening statement is reserved for Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Gil Kenan’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Kenan tackles the third sequel in recognized Ghostbusters continuity, which hardly gives audiences a reason to stay excited about any more franchise continuations. Plotting feels superficially engineered to sell the nostalgia thrills of seeing the original Ghostbusters suit up or so we can relive old scenes anew; a film built around team poses and one-liners that misremember how Ivan Reitman’s predecessors made bustin’ feel so good.

After the events of Afterlife, the Spenglers and Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd) move into the iconic New York City firehouse where it all started. Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) sees her romance with Gary flourish, while her kids Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) make spectral entrapment a family business.

S.O.S. fantômes (1984)
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Review: Bringing Out the Dead, Without Conviction
S.O.S. fantômes (1984)
The caretakers of the Ghostbusters series are no strangers to being yelled at about all the things that fans don’t want to see in the movies. No, we can’t let women be Ghostbusters. No, this is no place to be earnestly sentimental about dead fathers and original cast members. No, don’t soften things down for younger generations that love the series.

With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire feels so wracked with anxiety, seemingly afraid to do anything too extreme with the toys at its disposal. That’s especially unfortunate given that all the right elements are in play. Freed from Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s legacy-sequel trappings, Frozen Empire initially gets down to the welcome business of positing what a fully functioning ghostbusting business in 2024 might look like.

Gil Kenan’s film finds the Spengler clan—Callie (Carrie Coon), Phoebe (McKenna Grace), and...

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire Review
Paul Rudd, Kevin Mangold, Ian Whyte, Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Celeste O'Connor in S.O.S. Fantômes : La Menace de glace (2024)
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ventures into the realm of the supernatural once again, this time with a fresh perspective and a dash of nostalgia that fans of the beloved franchise will surely appreciate. Made on a lavish $100 million budget, the film is projected to open at a respectable $45 million stateside, matching its predecessor Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It’s evident that despite the passage of four decades, audiences still harbour a fervent love for this iconic series.

Stepping into the directorial spotlight alongside the returning producer and writer, Jason Reitman, is Gil Kenan, who inherits the reins from the previous Afterlife director. The film is also dedicated to the late Ivan Reitman, the original director of the first two films. Also making their return are Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard, The Handmaid’s Tale’s Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family makes a monumental decision to depart Summerville,...

‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Review – The Nostalgia Tank Is Running on Empty in Familiar Ghostbusting Tale
Image
It’s been almost forty years since Ghostbusters introduced the plucky foursome fumbling their way through spectral encounters, using a now iconic Manhattan firehouse as their operations base. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set two years after the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, further entrenches the Spengler family and newcomers into the franchise by returning to where it all began: New York City. Frozen Empire offers familiar set pieces, references, and easter eggs aplenty, but the nostalgia tank is now running on empty.

Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), mom Callie (Carrie Coon), and stepdad Gary (Paul Rudd) have adjusted well to life as Ghostbusters in the rundown yet classic firehouse. So well, in fact, that their latest paranormal capture caused enough city damage to put them in the crosshairs of Walter “Dickless” Peck (William Atherton). That’s not the only source of trouble for the new team; the firehouse’s containment unit is at capacity and struggling.
