'The Last of the Tng-Era Shows': Star Trek: Lower Decks Showrunner Reflects on Creating the Hit Series
Image
Star Trek: Lower Decks might pull from every era of franchise lore, but its early episodes did a lot to establish the show's own identity within the Trek timeline.

Looking back on the show's legacy with Polygon, showrunner Mke McMahan provided an overview of how he approached Lower Deck's first season and found the right comedy-drama balance within its stories and character dynamics. "I knew that the show had to feel like it took place seven years after Star Trek: Nemesis, that we had to fit into the timeline both technologically and with design and with all of the character attributes that that would come with. So that we recognize this as kind of like the last of the Tng-era shows," he explained.

Foundation Explores Science and Religion Through Poly Verisof
Image
The following contains spoilers for Foundation Season 2, Episodes 2 & 4, which is now streaming on Apple TV+.

The second season of Apple TV+'s hit sci-fi series Foundation, based on the novels by Isaac Asimov, has continued to tackle many complex themes through the sci-fi genre. One prevailing theme this season is the fusion of science and religion, which centers around one key character: Poly Verisof. This character forms the nexus between these two seemingly opposing forces, enabling the series to offer insights into the intricate relationship between scientific advancement and spiritual belief.

One aspect of Hari Seldon's plan that has come to fruition this season is the Foundation's entry into its religious phase. While the Foundation worked to expand its influence, other civilizations with limited scientific progress began to perceive the Foundation's technology as something mystical, resulting in the emergence of a new religion called, The Church of the Galactic Spirit.

Foundation is following the dream of psychohistorian Hari Seldon as he guides his organization, the Foundation, through intergalactic crisis'. Seldon wasn't able to guide his Foundation through the First Crisis due to being dead and only an AI construct. Fortunately, Salvor Hardin was there. Now Seldon is back, and his AI is still around also, together, they are preparing to ensure that the galaxy will not only survive the Second Crisis, but also all the following ones.

Seldon's plan for the First Crisis was very unclear, it seemed like a rather hands-off approach. This was only because Gaal Dornick had not been on Terminus like she was supposed to be. Now everything is aligned properly. Gaal, Salvor and human Seldon are together, and Brother Constant, Poly and Hober...

Everything We Know About Foundation Season 2, The Return Of The Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Series
Image
While "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" got all the attention for being the most expensive TV show in history (and was -- deservedly! -- praised for actually putting that money on screen with its massive settings), there is another show that is just as visually impressive and expansive — the Apple TV+ series "Foundation."

While we wait for "Dune: Part Two" to bring back desert power and giant worms, "Foundation" is the seminal sci-fi book adaptation to watch. Based on Isaac Asimov's magnum opus of the same name — which actually inspired Frank Herbert to craft the tale of Paul Atreides — "Foundation" is a true sci-fi epic, the likes of which we haven't gotten in decades. The show looks simply stunning, with vast worlds and gorgeous alien locations.

The first season had some fascinating moments and ideas, like Lee Pace playing one-third of an immortal emperor, or math saving the universe,...

Cynthia Nixon in Emily Dickinson, a Quiet Passion (2016)
Terence Davies Makes Brilliant Movies But Lives a Lonely Life: ‘I’m Terrified of the World’
Cynthia Nixon in Emily Dickinson, a Quiet Passion (2016)
Terence Davies is at once both monolithic and anonymous. A critically revered British filmmaker whose work has yet to catch on with general audiences (perhaps, in part, because his films are so crushingly intimate that it almost feels inappropriate to watch them in public), he’s seldom recognized on the street, and sometimes that might be for the best.

“The other day I was feeling low,” he said, “and I just thought: ‘Why am I making films that, like, three people or a dog go and see?’ I know this is feeble, but it really is killing when someone says ‘What do you do?’ ‘Oh, I make films.’ ‘Well, would I have seen some of them? Would I have heard of you?’ And I say: ‘Well, probably not.’”

Of course, some of our greatest artists are tremendously under-appreciated in their own time, though they may be the only ones who...
