Steven Levenson at an event for The 71st Annual Tony Awards (2017)
Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda makes his feature directorial debut with tick, tick...BOOM!, an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent. The film follows Jon (Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner Andrew Garfield), a young theater composer who's waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. With the clock ticking, Jon is at a crossroads and faces the question everyone must reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?

Levenson was raised in Bethesda, Maryland and attended St. Andrew's Episcopal School and Brown University. He originally studied theater and English but then turned to playwriting. Levenson wrote the book for the musical "Dear Evan Hansen," which opened on Broadway in December 2016, after premiering at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC in 2015. The show earned him the 2016 Obie Award for Musical Theatre and the 2017 Tony Award for Best Book. "The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin" was produced Off-Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company at the Laura Pels Theatre, opening in June 2013. The play was produced under the Roundabout Theatre's New Play Initiative and earned him the 2014 Outer Critics Circle Award, John Gassner Award. His play "If I Forget" opened Off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre on February 22, 2017 and closed on April 30, 2017. It was then nominated for four 2017 Drama Desk Awards. Levenson is married to Whitney May, who has worked in art history and design history. They have a daughter, born in 2015.
