While most streaming services get a bad reputation for canceling fan-favorite shows like Westworld, The Winchesters, and Mindhunter, Netflix gets it even worse for canceling fan-favorite shows in their infancy. Sometimes, fan backlash can save a show from getting canceled outright, either by it getting a smaller final season like Superman & Lois, or getting shopped to another platform. In most cases, however, the series stays dead. But that isn’t the case for The Oa.
Six years ago, the sci-fi series was unceremoniously canceled by Netflix, and fans weren’t happy. The series, co-created by Brit Marlingand Zal Batmanglij, was widely loved by fans for a gripping plot, supernatural elements, and fantastical yet grounded storytelling. Its cancellation also left fans on a major cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. But it seems that the creators are quite adamant about finishing their story as Jason Isaacs, who played antagonist Dr. Hunte,...

There have been some major Marvel Cinematic Universe shows on Disney+, but how do they stack up against each other?
When Disney+ was launched in 2019, the company saw it as a way to expand its franchises for the small screen. Star Wars got the treatment first, with The Mandalorian becoming a sensation and establishing a new wave of Star Wars lore.
The MCU followed with the producers using the Disney+ shows to not only take a chance on new stories and characters but lay seeds for storylines that would be used in the movies. There has been the drawback of needing to know about these shows in order to enjoy some films, as well as the classic problem of some series stretching things out too much.
Yet, the MCU has done its best to make its pilots compelling and draw viewers in, just as the first issue of a comic book should.

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 keeps pulling us into its twisted worlds, and Episode 5, ‘Eulogy,’ hits a quieter, sadder note that still leaves a mark. Charlie Brooker crafts a story here that’s less about flashy tech and more about the ache of holding onto what’s gone. We’re dropped into the life of a grieving sister, wrestling with a gadget that promises closure but delivers something else entirely. It’s a slow, heavy burn that sticks with you.
Olivia Colman steps up as Janet, carrying the weight of loss like only she can, while Kingsley Ben-Adir plays her brother Marcus in fleeting, perfect moments. Rory Kinnear rounds out the cast as Eric, a tech guy with a salesman’s grin and a shaky conscience. This one’s got that ‘Black Mirror’ feel—hope dangling just out of reach—but it’s grounded in something raw and real. Let’s dig...

There are many familiar faces returning to Hell's Kitchen in "Daredevil: Born Again." Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal are all heading back to where it all began for more wince-inducing comic book action that we've come to expect from this particular corner of the MCU, which doesn't pull its punches and breaks plenty of bones while doing so. Besides the major players once again entangled in the affairs of the Man Without Fear, there are also some newcomers. Sneaking into the world of kings and devils is Daniel Blake, a supporter of Wilson Fisk (D'Onofrio) who's aiding the former convict's campaign for Mayor of New York. But who is this young upstart who believes the former kingpin has what it takes? Well, if anyone in the cast is familiar with the concept of maintaining a front while engaging in criminal activity, it's Michael Gandolfini.

No official order is needed to urge fans of great drama and action to watch Peaky Blinders, whether you’re new to the series or getting reacquainted ahead of the upcoming feature film.
Created by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight (Maria and All the Light We Cannot See), Peaky Blinders takes place in Birmingham, England, in the wake of World War I, and follows the Peaky Blinders street gang, led by Shelby family patriarch Tommy Shelby (Oscar winner Cillian Murphy). For six seasons, Tommy and the rest of the Shelby clan took extreme measures to expand their criminal footprint, all while dealing with powerful fictional allies and true historical events.
Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, and Finn Cole helped anchor Peaky Blinders throughout, but Tom Hardy, Annabelle Wallis, Sam Neill, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Sam Claflin, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Adrien Brody were among the decorated actors to have memorable runs on the series.

Louis Leterrier has directed the action films The Transporter, Transporter 2, Unleashed, and Fast X, the action comedies The Brothers Grimsby and The Takedown, the mystery thriller Now You See Me, the fantasy adventure Clash of the Titans, and the comic book adaptation The Incredible Hulk (not to mention the TV shows The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Lupin), and over the decades his films have racked up $2 billion at the box office. Last May, we learned that he’ll be directing and producing the film 11817, working from a screenplay by Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying), which will see him venturing into the sci-fi horror realm. Christmas is all but over, New Year is a whisker away, and another extraordinary year in the world of movies and television has almost reached its end. Now, as we sit through 2024’s proverbial end credits, breath held just in case any final frame stings arrive to shake things up as we head into 2025 (*cough* The Odyssey *cough*), we’re taking a break from our festive feasting to reflect on the biggest movie — and TV — news of 2024.
Here was a year of huge franchise comebacks on the big and small screen, of hot-button debates about AI and a very different kind of cancel culture, of box office bangers and viral sensations, and of a slew of hugely exciting meetings and truly heartbreaking partings with the people who make the films and shows we so dearly love. In short, it’s been emotional.
But without further ado, join us as Empire...

It's truly a testament to Kingsley Ben-Adir's talents that in a show as abysmal as Marvel's "Secret Invasion," he still managed to squeeze a gem of a performance out of it. There's a lot that went wrong with "Secret Invasion," but Ben-Adir as the disillusioned Skrull, Gravik, brought a level of gravitas to the freedom fighter who believes the best way forward for Skrull liberation is to make Earth only hospitable for the alien race. It's only a shame Gravik dies at the end of the show, thereby preventing him from really making a mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a better project, but it shows how Ben-Adir is so often the best part of whatever he's in.
After making a mark in the theatre world, Kingsley Ben-Adir started appearing in an assortment of British television, as he himself was born in London, England. Now, he's starred in...

The James Bond franchise's direction remains unclear years after the end of the well-received Daniel Craig era. A new report claims the popular spy film series' producers are locked in a creative dispute about whom the new 007 and Bond villain should be.
According to The Wall Street Journal, long-time producers Gregg Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are at odds regarding the casting of the eponymous lead actor and the top villain for James Bond 26. Wilson has been more open to the new 007 being a man of color, a gay man or a woman. Though Broccoli has no qualms about the next Bond being non-white or gay, she believes the lead must be a British man. Wilson and Broccoli recently clarified that they're seeking a man in his 30s to be the next Bond. However, Broccoli suggested they were considering a non-white actor, telling the Associated Press that whiteness is not a given.

Tennessee Williams sets Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, his 1955 play about sexual repression, at a cotton plantation on the Mississippi Delta. You can feel the heat in director Rebecca Frecknall’s production at the Almeida Theatre starring a scorching Daisy Edgar-Jones as Maggie, the cat in question, who does all in her power to jolt her inattentive husband, Brick — played superbly by Kingsley Ben-Adir — out of his self-inflicted stupor.
The play opened just a few days ago and there’s already chatter about it transferring into the West End, most appropriately, next summer, and Edgar-Jones must be persuaded to move with it, along with Ben-Adir, Lennie James’ powerful Big Daddy and Clare Burt’s cotton-headed Big Mama.
Edgar-Jones’ Maggie the cat is a study in the art of allure, and calculation; she prowls the Almeida stage like a hungry feline wanting to play with her prey before gobbling it up,...

Barbie exceeded expectations in a big way last year, earning $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office and receiving widespread critical acclaim (not to mention countless award nominations and wins). Unsurprisingly, it took no time at all for people to start wondering about a sequel.
As keen as the studio might be to make that a reality, it was widely believed that it would be down to filmmakers Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach given their roles in crafting that first instalment (Gerwig directed and wrote the screenplay alongside Baumbach).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "a well-placed source" has told them that the duo has an idea for a follow-up and have already taken it to executives at Warner Bros. Despite only being in its "early stages," it sounds like Gerwig and Baumbach cracking the story has opened the door to talks about making Barbie 2 a reality.

Malcolm X is one of American history's most fascinating figures, a delinquent turned holy activist who struggled with his faith insofar as it had been misrepresented to him by Elijah Muhammad. Given that Muhammad is the man whose teachings rescued him from an aimless life of crime, the moment he realized his mentor and savior was a liar and philanderer served as a crucible for his beliefs. Would he look the other way as most of Muhammad's inner circle had, or would he break with the leader and offer followers a righteous alternative?
This is grist for great drama as we've seen in movies like "Malcolm X," "Ali" and "One Night in Miami," and it soars when directors cast the right Malcolm. It’s a good year for the musically inclined. This awards season is full of actors who sing. And that doesn’t just mean the performers who were already known for their vocal chops like musical theater star Cynthia Erivo and pop singer Ariana Grande in “Wicked.” There are a number of singing actors for whom music isn’t their primary claim to fame, like Timothée Chalamet in “A Complete Unknown,” Zoe Saldaña in “Emilia Pérez,” Angelina Jolie in “Maria,” Kingsley Ben-Adir in “Bob Marley: One Love,” and even Saoirse Ronan in “Blitz.” Will those stars get a bump for showing their vocal range in addition to their dramatic range?
Some stars over the last 20 or so years were recognized for expanding their repertoires. Nicole Kidman earned an Oscar nom for the 2001 musical “Moulin Rouge!” — though her co-star Ewan McGregor was snubbed despite also doing his own singing. “Chicago” (2002) earned...

Anthology series have been growing in popularity since the late 1940s and work to tell a cohesive story from a variety of different characters. From Black Mirror to The Twilight Zone, these shows work to keep viewers gripped week after week. Plus, since this genre is so diverse, it can suit just about any niche.
Though these series work best in a typical television format, anthology series have also seen a ton of success in the streaming industry. Thus, even when viewers decide to binge these shows over a few days, they can still appreciate how the individual narratives blend over time. As such, it seems that this vintage genre has seen an impressive revival throughout the 2020s.

Some of Marvel's most powerful and exciting villains have been introduced in the Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Every good superhero story needs to have a formidable supervillain, and some of the best comic book villains in history have debuted during the McU's Multiverse Saga. This is set to continue with the villains of Marvel Studios' upcoming projects, which will debut the likes of Galactus, Doctor Doom, Muse, Red Hulk and Lilith, among others, in the MCU, fleshing out the Multiverse Saga even further.
Marvel Studios' upcoming projects, particularly Captain America: Brave New World, Daredevil: Born Again, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Blade and Avengers: Doomsday, are expected to include some of the McU's most formidable supervillains. These characters will oppose many of Marvel's most iconic heroes, whose inclusions in the McU's Phase 5 are very exciting. While the future looks bright, the recent history of the McU's Multiverse...

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week’s topic: Best Actor dark horses.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! You’re no doubt riding on the high of the news that Conan O’Brien will host this year’s Oscars, a decision that seems absolutely perfect and immediately raises my interest in the ceremony on March 2, 2025. But we’re not here to type about Conan. Instead, our focus this week is on the fellas in the Best Actor race. The remains the most static of our acting races — lacking both the depth of field and loud stan armies of the Best Actress race that we typed about last week. When we did our ridiculously early 2025 Oscar picks in March, we both picked Ralph Fiennes, Colman Domingo, and Daniel Craig as potential Best Actor nominees.

Actors transforming into famous figures for biopics isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. In recent years, we’ve seen Marisa Abela’s Amy Winehouse in Back To Black, Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Bob Marley in One Love, Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, and Sebastian Stan’s Donald J. Trump in The Apprentice. But just when the market for such movies may have been running the risk of getting overcrowded, along comes Waltzing With Brando to make us an offer we can’t refuse. That offer? Titanic actor Billy Zane going absolutely all-in to play Marlon Brando in a comedy about The Godfather legend’s efforts to create a sustainable pocket of paradise on a tiny Tahitian island. If it sounds barmy, then that's nothing compared to how it looks — just check out the extraordinary trailer for Bill Fishman’s film below:

In 2021, Marvel gave us WandaVision, the first show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then it's been off to the races, with shows like Loki, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and more following. Personally, I feel the decision to expand the MCU to television was a genius idea. In fact, I’d argue that in some ways the shows have been better than the movies because they are able to go more in depth.
With that in mind, we thought we’d look back at all of Marvel Disney+ shows we’ve gotten so far and rank them from worst to best. Bear in mind that being “the worst” doesn’t mean the show was a disaster, because Marvel rarely puts out anything bad. It simply means that it did not match the level of hype and excitement as the other series.
Now, without further adieu, let’s get ranking.
