Bwf World Rankings: Prannoy soars to career-best sixth position, Sindhu moves to 14th

New Delhi, Aug 29 (Ians) Riding on his superb performance in the World Championship, ace Indian shuttler Prannoy H.S achieved a career-best world ranking as he reached No.6 in the latest chart released by the Badminton World Federation (Bwf) on Tuesday.

After pocketing a bronze, his first-ever medal in World Championships, at Copenhagen recently, Prannoy climbed up three spots to achieve his new career-high rank with 72437 points in the men’s singles category.

Prannoy, who stunned the Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen in the quarterfinals in the World Championship, is the lone Indian featuring in the top 10 in the men’s singles list.

The 31-year-old reached two finals this year. He won his first Bwf title this May at Malaysia Masters and finished runner-up at the Australian Open after an epic, intense three-game battle against China’s Weng Hong Yang earlier this month.

Among the other Indian shuttlers, Lakshya Sen dropped a place to the No.

Tokyo, July 26 (Ians) Ace Indian shuttler Pv Sindhu’s poor run of form continued as she suffered a first round exit from the Japan Open 2023 badminton tournament at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, here on Wednesday.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu, 17th in the women’s singles badminton rankings, lost 12-21, 13-21 to China’s Zhang Yi Man to make her seventh opening round exit in 13 Bwf World Tour 2023 tournaments this year.

This was also Sindhu’s second straight opening round ouster after going down to Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po in the Korea Open opener last week.

Zhang Yi Man, who is ranked one place lower than Sindhu, looked in control throughout the contest and eventually ended the match in 32 minutes to pick up her third victory over the Indian shuttler in five meetings.

Before the Japan Open opener, the two badminton players had faced each other twice this year.

Council Bluffs (USA), July 14 (Ians) Star Indian shuttlers P.V. Sindhu and Lakshya Sen progressed to the quarterfinals of the US Open, Bwf Super 300 tournament, after notching a straight-game win in their respective Round of 16 matches, here on Thursday.

Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu registered an easy 21-14, 21-12 win over Sung Shuo Yun of the Chinese Taipei in the Round of 16 women’s singles. Lakshya, meanwhile, beat the Czech Republic’s Jan Louda 21-8, 23-21 in his men’s singles second-round match.

Sindhu started slow but found her rhythm as the match progressed. The Indian ace soon put Sung Shuo Yun on the back foot and raced to a 13-5 lead. The Taipei shuttler put up a brief resistance but it was not enough as Sindhu wrapped up the first game and took the lead.

Calgary (Canada), July 9 (Ians) Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Lakshya Sen stormed into the men’s singles final of Canada Open 2023 badminton tournament after defeating Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in straight games 21-17, 21-14 in the semifinal, here.

The conditions were a bit tough at Calgary but Sen negotiated it well to reach his first summit clash of the year. He last played a final at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022.

Madrid, April 1 (Ians) India’s two-time Olympic medallist and former World Champion P.V Sindhu stormed into the final of the Madrid Spain Masters 2023, beating Yeo Jia Min of Singapore in a thrilling semifinal here on Saturday.

Sindhu, who had failed to progress beyond the second round in the Bwf World Tour events she competed in so far, reached her first final of the 2023 season as she gathered momentum as she had missed the entire second half of the 2022 season after suffering an injury during in Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August.

Over 8000 shuttlers take part in sixth edition of Junior Badminton Championship

New Delhi, Oct 12 (Ians) The sixth edition of the Junior Badminton Championship (Jbc), witnessed the record-breaking and highest-ever participation of 8000 plus shuttlers from the 12 states with 118 players crowned as champions, the organisers said on Wednesday.

The organisers of the Jbc, sponsored by Pnb MetLife, got the recognition from the World Record Certification Agency (Wrca) for creating a world record for “Most Kids Participating in a Badminton Championship in Multiple Cities.”

The announcement came after Wrca authenticated the information for Junior Badminton Championship, which was held from August-October 2022 across 12 states in India, with 8031 participants. The final leg of the sixth edition of the tournament culminated at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium with the crowning of 10 badminton champions across five categories for the Delhi chapter of Jbc.

In addition to these winners, organisers also awarded runners-up and the top two semifinalists for each category both in the boys’ and girls’ groups. Over 850 skilled...

Despite picking up an injury early in the tournament, Sindhu beat Canada’s Michelle Li in the women’s singles final in Birmingham to win her maiden individual Cwg gold medal. She was seen playing most of her matches with a strapped left leg. Later, it was discovered that the two-time Olympic medallist had sustained a stress fracture on her left ankle.

Sindhu visits diamond polishing unit, attends Navratri events in Surat

New Delhi, Oct 2 (Ians) Two-time Olympic medallist P.V Sindhu on Saturday paid a visit to the Diamond Polishing Unit in Surat and also took part in Navratri events along with other Indian badminton players in Gujarat.

Sindhu is currently in Gujarat for the 36th National Games.

The Sports Authority of India (Sai) took to social media to post a video of Sindhu, in which she can be seen keenly observing the process of diamond polishing.

“Surat, the land of diamonds welcomed the diamond of Sports world, Badminton Champ @Pvsindhu1. Sindhu was invited to see the process of diamond polishing,” wrote Sai Media in a tweet along with the video.

In another post, the ace Indian shuttler was seen in Gujarati attire, having some happy moments during the Navratri festival event. She was joined by other Indian players — Chirag Shetty and Hs Prannoy.

A former World No. 1 among junior women, she has risen to No. 113 in the Bwf World rankings.

“I have not yet competed in a major National-level tournament in my home State,” she said.

National Games: Injured Sindhu to attend Opening Ceremony, to miss badminton competition in Surat

Hyderabad, Sep 24 (Ians) Two-time Olympic Games medallist Pv Sindhu will attend the Opening Ceremony of the 36th National Games in Ahmedabad on September 29, despite pulling out of the Games because of an injury.

“It is unfortunate that I will not be competing in the Games due to my injury. Had I been fit, I would have definitely represented my State (Telangana),” Sindhu was quoted as saying by the organising committee of the Games in a release on Saturday.

“The National Games is a great opportunity for all the athletes and everyone I have spoken to is excited about it. I am sure the badminton matches will be very exciting,” she said.

Sindhu, who is on the path to recovery after sustaining an ankle injury during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August, is however going to be in person in Gujarat for the Opening Ceremony on September 29 along with other mega sports stars.

Japan Open 2022: Hs Prannoy advances to pre-quarters

Osaka (Japan), Aug 30 (Ians) Ace Indian shuttler Hs Prannoy advanced to the men’s singles round of 16 at the Japan Open 2022 badminton tournament, here on Tuesday.

Prannoy, the world No 18, was leading 11-10 in the first game against Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus when the latter retired from the tie due to an apparent injury.

The Ng Ka Long Angus withdrawal means that Prannoy will get the must-needed rest for his next round encounter which will be against the 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore.

The Indian, who reached the quarter-finals at the world championships last week after beating Kento Momota and Lakshya Sen along the way, will fancy his chances against Loh Kean Yew.

In the women’s doubles, the pair of Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam were knocked out after they lost 15-21, 9-21 to South Koreans Baek Ha Na and Lee Yu Lim.

The 6th edition of the Pnb MetLife Junior Badminton Championship (Jbc) 2022 will be held in 12 cities across India under the banner of 12 State associations for age groups ranging from 7-17 years, the organisers of the event said in a statement on Monday.

Tokyo, Aug 21 (Ians) Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medallist Lakshya Sen and bronze medal winner Kidambi Srikanth will lead India’s challenge and will be top medal hopes at the Bwf World Championships 2022 in absence of injured P.V. Sindhu, who will miss the tournament, starting here on Monday.

Lakshya, seeded ninth, clinched a bronze medal in the 2021 edition of the tournament in Huelva. He had entered the championship unseeded but went on to cause major upsets, including the victory over Tokyo Olympics semi-finalist Kevin Cordon.

The 21-year-old Indian lost to compatriot Kidambi Srikanth in the semifinal and settled for bronze.

India will also expect 12th seed Kidambi Srikanth, who won silver in 2021, to fire on all cylinders. He was the first Indian man to reach the finals of the Bwf World Championships and return with a silver medal, losing to Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in straight sets in the final last time around.
