Nearly ten years after its premiere on Syfy, The Expanse is still capable of topping charts. The series adaptation of James S. A. Corey's — the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck — sci-fi novels has long been hailed for grounding the genre with the reality of human strife and political intrigue in the reaches of space. Its believable depiction of a dystopian future where humanity has colonized the solar system earned it not only rave reviews to the tune of a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but also a trio of Hugo Award wins and multiple Saturn Award nominations during its run. Now, it currently occupies the top spot on iTunes' PVOD charts in the U.S., coming out ahead of other sci-fi giants like the acclaimed Battlestar Galactica and comedic Rick and Morty, as well as recent hits like Taylor Sheridan's Landman, which only came in at ninth.

For those familiar with The Expanse, a new Prime series from the same authors (James S.A. Corey is a pen name for writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) and showrunners is welcome news.

Even better, The Captive’s War series is an entirely new universe, separate and distinct from The Expanse. With all the sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and wannabes out there, something unique is an exciting prospect.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t bode well for a potential continuation of The Expanse, a series that ended with three books’ worth of storytelling remaining.

On the bright side, this upcoming release is a good sign for the continued growth of the Science Fiction genre, especially in a more creative and intelligent direction.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Dominique Tipper recently confirmed her return for the show's second season. The actor played Apex Cybernetics executive Brenda Holland in Season 1 of the hit Apple+ TV Monsterverse series.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Tipper admitted she did not know what Season 2's storyline for Brenda would be but confirmed she would have a role to play. "I don't know if I'm allowed to say, actually. No - I am. Yes, I am, because Chris Black, the creator, mentioned it at the upfront, so yes, you will see more of Brenda Holland," she said. "I don't really know what her storyline is entirely just yet, but I hope we get to see a lot more different sides of her ethics and her morality. But again, I don't actually know, so this is just my own wish for the character."

The sci-fi genre boasts an incredible array of great casts. Some feature genuine superstars, while others rely on the chemistry of the ensemble in order to succeed. In every case, great ensemble casts help propel the story forward and create beloved characters along the way.

Perhaps more than any other genre, sci-fi TV shows can boast an incredible array of great ensemble casts. Whether as a direct result of plot lines involving complex space travel, or high concepts that require an array of characters to adequately explore, science fiction naturally lends itself to more expansive casts than other areas. Some shows have been able to do this with incredible results.

There are several ways for the best sci-fi TV shows to assemble a great cast. One method is to cast a collection of A-list actors in major roles, all but guaranteeing that their accumulated talent will produce a great result.

"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" wrapped up its first season this week with a surprisingly satisfying finale that wove together disparate threads the show has been untangling all season. The sci-fi series' overlong debut season still managed to keep plenty of viewers intrigued with a myriad of monsters, an endless stream of mysteries, and two Russells for the price of one, but its final two episodes are the best "Monarch" has been yet.

Short final seasons can be successful despite fewer episodes, as seen in The Expanse and Arrow. These shorter seasons still manage to wrap up character storylines and provide satisfying conclusions. Shows like Superstore and New Girl prove that a shorter episode span can work better in certain instances, allowing for new and old storylines to reach a natural conclusion.

While it's not unusual to see a TV show with a short final season, there have been some instances where this has worked in a show's favor. A shorter season of a show can happen for several reasons, such as production issues, the show being canceled, or a writer's strike. Despite having fewer episodes than usual, this doesn't mean that a show cannot still have a successful season.

Ever since it was announced that the Monster-Verse would expand to television with (the somewhat clunkily-titled) "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," it felt clear that the series would have to balance kaiju action with human drama in a way none of the big-screen efforts have quite managed to accomplish so far. The early returns have been promising enough, with last week's episode "Terrifying Miracles" perhaps finding the best of both worlds. That storyline, involving our present-day characters searching for Cate and Kentaro's long-lost father Hiroshi (Takehiro Hira), intersected dramatically with the (re)discovery of Godzilla.

By comparison, this week's "Will the Real May Please Stand Up?" dives right back to its human-sized concerns ... but, in the process, includes some major Easter eggs that further connect the two most recent "Godzilla" movies while also hinting at the long-term stakes of the series.

Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode seven opens with a creature emerging from the dirt. Check that…it’s not a creature, it’s Tim (Joe Tippett). He survived the helicopter crash without any major noticeable injuries.

Tindouf, Algeria: Cate (Anna Sawai) is trying to work through why her dad was out there. Kentaro (Ren Watabe) is done worrying about his dad, certain Hiroshi just ran away and left them to die at the feet/claws/jaws of Godzilla.

The Apple TV+ series is based on Godzilla and serves as the sixth installment in the MonsterVerse. It revolves around the members of an organization called Monarch and it spans over three generations and almost half a decade. The main story follows the events after Godzilla and MUTOs epic battle in 2015 that destroyed San Francisco.

The Oscar-qualified short stars David Oyelowo and comes from a story by Harriman, with a screenplay by writer John Julius Schwabach. The story follows Dayo (Oyelowo), a Londoner who has to reconnect with himself and society after witnessing a devastating random attack in the capital.

Although The Expanse may have ended its run as a TV show, the franchise's continued success elsewhere proves why The Expanse season 7, or a movie continuation, must happen. Although The Expanse never became a rating's leviathan of the sci-fi TV realm, the live-action adaptation of James S.A. Corey's book series attracted considerable critical acclaim and commanded an audience so passionate that Amazon felt compelled to save The Expanse when Syfy wielded its axe after season 3. Three seasons later, The Expanse season 6 brought the Rocinante's adventures to a stop once again. Over a year has passed, and a second lifeline is still yet to emerge.

Nevertheless, The Expanse's story is very much not over. Although the Expanse season 6 finale functioned as an overall conclusion, with Marco Inaros defeated and a fragile peace forged between the Belt, Earth, and Mars, seeds were overtly sown for material from James S.

Much like the sci-fi show's ambitious plot, The Expanse cast grew larger with each succeeding season, and the sixth and last season is no exception. Based on the book series of the same name written by Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham under the pen name James S.A. Rhetorical question really because the answer is fairly obvious… No, no there is not because we bloody love this director here at Nerdly. This time out we don’t have frequent collaborator Scott Adkins but we do have the one true Punisher Thomas Jane, along with John Malkovich, that man Nick Moran and The Expanse’s Dominique Tipper.

Do you feel like reliving the times when video stores were the keepers of magnificent secrets? Yes, they once guard them and we all discovered a culture and, Tarantino included in the pack, we became kind of “cultured” by renting movies that, although entertaining, were not going anywhere.

One Ranger is situated in this genre, in that of an inconsequential thriller film that, however, knows how to make a tribute to b-movie thrillers and gives us one nod after the other.

Thomas Jane slings guns and a Southern drawl while chasing terrorists across the pond in a new action movie. One Ranger has a rugged Texas lawman, always sporting his cowboy hat and brass belt buckle, showing the hapless Brits how to catch baddies on their own soil. An action-packed opening in the desert leads nowhere as the film never comes close to reaching that high bar again. A scattershot plot with poorly written characters suffers from gaping logic holes. The lack of cohesiveness compounds as a secondary villain takes center stage for no reason whatsoever.

As the saying goes, you can take the man out of Texas … but apparently he’ll drag an arsenal of Lone Star State clichés wherever he goes, at least in “One Ranger.” Stuntman turned writer-director Jesse V. Johnson’s latest action programmer has Thomas Jane as a Texas Ranger so ornery-tough he makes even Chuck Norris look too nice, called upon to chase terrorists overseas for no obvious reason at all. Well, perhaps the reason is simply to indulge some viewers’ notion that Texamurricans just naturally shoot ’n’ smack them foreign evildoers better. Those not buying such logic will find this mediocre effort ridiculous as well as uninspired. Lionsgate is releasing the feature to 11 U.S. theaters as well as digital and on-demand platforms on May 5.

British Intelligence meets Texas Justice in this white-knuckle action-thriller. Airing its final episode in January 2022, The Expanse looked to be burning toward a bright new future but, one year later, the Rocinante's glorious comeback has been as cold and silent as the vast reaches of space itself. The Expanse had already averted disaster once before. Originally airing on the Syfy channel, the live-action adaptation of James S.A. Corey's book series ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2018 before facing the cruel guillotine of cable cancelation. Jeff Bezos quickly stepped in, stumping up the cash for an additional three seasons that ran between 2019 and 2022 before the Rocinante's flight plan was thwarted once again.
