Writer-Director Shahi Kabir’s one-night-in-the-life-of… narrative in the Malayalam, Ronth, initially seems like a routine cop-on-duty plot, with crackling police communication radios and assorted small-time criminals sauntering in and out of view, drunk or sober, preferably latter.
Then the film begins to assume another shape, a much darker and terrifying hue. By the time we reach the closure, it is hard to recognize Ronth as the laidback, slightly disturbing experience that we started with.
The jaded Yohannan (Dileesh Pothan) and his rookie partner Dinanath (Roshan Mathew) are no Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy from 48 Hrs. Both Yohannan and Dinanath have dark unresolved past encounters with suicides close to their family. They both fear themselves more than anything else.
As a writer, Shahi Kabir scores high in allowing the salient characters to grow in their mutual kinship, not so much through any external impetus but by an organic sense of unspoken hand-holding.

On the surface, Girish Ad’s I Am Kathalan (2024) is every jilted incel Stem bro’s wet dream. A computer engineer taking revenge on his ex-girlfriend by hacking into her father’s company’s server? Dream so good that it could be the premise of a biopic of Elon Musk. Not that the world needs one. Girish Ad, to his credit, does not allow “I Am Kathalan” to be too ‘enamored’ by such dreams. The film, under the guise of a techno-thriller, is more about human frailties, with the fallacies of the youth and the ignorance of the old taking centerstage. Having said that, it must be noted that the ‘technological’ aspect of the film is deftly done with specific attention to details when it comes to ‘hacking.’ It does not involve the tried-and-tested method of showing a black screen with the word ‘downloading’ written on it with a progression bar.

What’s Bad: The movie had a few plot holes towards the end and lacked iconic music. Although the soundtrack was good and served its purpose, it had no standout tracks that left a lasting impression. In some scenes, a turbo spooling noise and horn sound are used as background sounds for Mammootty’s character before he appears.
