Dune: Denis Villeneuve Says It’s ‘Sprint’ to Finish Movie in Time
Denis Villeneuve
Denis Villeneuve is determined to finish Dune in time for its holiday season release. That doesn’t appear to be an easy task in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Indeed, Villeneuve was quarantining from his Canadian home in Montreal when he revealed to the Shanghai International Film Festival (via IndieWire) how much pressure the pandemic has put on Dune, which only now in August is about to begin its reshoots—a fact star Rebecca Ferguson previously alluded to in a separate interview.

“I was planning to go back and shoot some elements later because I wanted to readjust the movie,” Villeneuve said. “I needed time. At the time I didn’t know that it would be a pandemic… as we were about to go back to do those elements. The impact was that it crushed my schedule right now. It will be a sprint to finish the movie on time right now,...

Director Denis Villeneuve is currently trying to finish work on his upcoming Dune remake. The highly-anticipated blockbuster is set to arrive in December. To hit that mark, Villeneuve will be working overtime as there is still much work to be done. The filmmaker recently said that it is going to be a sprint to get it done on time.

The comments came in a video that recently surfaced online. Denis Villeneuve is featured in a lengthy interview promoting the Shanghai International Film Festival. Naturally, the subject of Dune came up. Here's what he had to say about it.

"I was planning to go back and shoot some elements later because I wanted to readjust the movie. I needed time. At the time I didn't know that it would be a pandemic...as we were about to go back to do those elements. The impact was that it crushed my schedule right now.

Villeneuve Sprinting to Finish ‘Dune’ in Quarantine, Pandemic ‘Crushed My Schedule’
Image
Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is still on track for a December 18 release later this year from Warner Bros., but it’s a barrel to the finish line according to the director. In a new Montreal-based interview promoting the Shanghai International Film Festival, Villeneuve spoke about how the pandemic has “crushed” the movie’s editing schedule. While production mostly wrapped before the quarantine hit, Villeneuve had been planning reshoots that were ultimately challenged by the shutdown of filming. Check out the video below.

“I was planning to go back and shoot some elements later because I wanted to readjust the movie. I needed time. At the time I didn’t know that it would be a pandemic…as we were about to go back to do those elements,” he said. “The impact was that it crushed my schedule right now. Josh Brolin Shows Off the Dune Set in a Video Shared on Social Media
Josh Brolin shot a video showing off the set of director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and as you can see, it looks like the landscape of the story you’d image. It seems like a pretty awesome place to shoot the movie. I like how Brolin describes it aa an “ancient space.”

There’s an incredibly talented team of creative people working on Dune, and I have no doubt that this team is going to deliver an amazing film adaptation of Dune.

Check out the video below:

Ladies’ choice: ‘Roma,’ ‘The Favourite’ win top awards from the Alliance of Women Film Journalists
‘Roma,’ Alfonso Cuaron‘s nostalgic ode to his ’70s childhood in Mexico City, won over the 84-member Alliance of Women Film Journalists — including me. The stunning black-and-white Netflix release pocketed five Eda wins: Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Non-English Film, Best Editing and Best Director. Coming in second were those cutthroat royals in “The Favourite” with four wins, including Olivia Colman as Best Actress.

The all-female group’s 12th annual competition once again salutes the best – and some of the worst – in the world of film with 25 categories in three sections. There are the general Best of Awards, Female Focus Awards and Eda Special Mention Awards whose nominees are picked by those Awfj members who send in a nominating ballot. There is room for the good, including Viola Davis of “Widows” receiving the “Actress Defying Age and Ageism Award,” and the bad, as in Jennifer Lawrence of “Red Sparrow,” who...

Denis Villeneuve Reunites With ‘Arrival’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Editor Joe Walker for ‘Dune’
Denis Villeneuve
Denis Villeneuve has tapped his frequent collaborator Joe Walker as the Dune editor. This marks the French-Canadian director’s fourth collaboration with Walker in a row, after they’ve worked together on Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049. Dune has long been a passion project for Villeneuve, who co-wrote the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. To pull together his vision of Frank Herbert’s dense sci-fi […]

Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ Gets Editor Joe Walker – Exclusive
Editor Joe Walker (“Widows”) re-teams with director Denis Villeneuve on his passion project, “Dune,” a retelling of novelist Frank Herbert’s sci-fi saga about power, politics, and religion. This marks their fourth collaboration in a row, following “Sicario,” “Arrival,” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

“Dune,” which starts shooting in Budapest in March for Legendary, stars Timothée Chalamet as an exiled nobleman, who leads a rebellion on the eponymous desert planet, whose valuable resource, the mind-enhancing “spice,” causes a feudal war. Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission: Impossible — Fallout”) plays his mother, and Dave Bautista (“Blade Runner 2049”) co-stars as a brutal rival.

“I was deeply familiar with ‘Arrival’ and ‘Blade Runner’ before they were made, sitting next to Denis in the cutting room when he formulated them, but, on this one, I’ve rather enjoyed being kept in the dark,” said Walker, who’s also cut four films for director Steve McQueen and has been nominated twice for Oscars.

Legal Weed Already Facing Backlash in New Jersey
If all goes according to plan, legal recreational marijuana will soon be growing in the Garden State. This week, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is reportedly meeting with lawmakers to began hashing out the remaining sticking points of the “New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory and Expungement Aid Modernization Act,” a bill which passed the State assembly and senate committees in late November. Once amended, the bill is expected to pass a full legislative vote before being signed into law later this year. While a recent Rutgers University poll found 60 percent support for legalization,...

How many of the 10 Ace Eddie Awards nominees will make the cut at the Oscars?
The American Cinema Editors guild, which announced nominations for the Eddie Awards on Jan. 7, has a good track record as a predictor of the Academy Awards winner for Best Picture (17 out of the last 28). And it has a great one for forecasting who will win Best Film Editing at the Oscars (21 of the last 28). Not surprisingly, it is also fairly prescient when it comes to predicting the five Film Editing Oscar nominations.

In 1992, the Ace Eddie Awards went from three to five nominees (matching that of the Oscars) and in 2000 it split the award in two, with five nominees for each of drama and comedy/musical. Over the past 26 years, 115 of the 130 Oscar nominees for Film Editing had first reaped a Golden Eddie bid; that is an accuracy rate of 88%.

Among this year’s Ace Eddie nominees is our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “Roma,”along with the other...

Denis Villeneuve Talks 4-Hour Cut Of ‘Blade Runner 2049’
Shortly after “Blade Runner 2049” opened this fall, editor Joe Walker discussed the wealth of material that didn’t make the nearly three-hour movie we all saw in cinemas. The one tidbit that captured many people’s attention was his revelation that “the first assembly of the film was nearly four hours and for convenience sake and – to be honest – my bladder’s sake, we broke it into two for viewings.” Most assumed this meant there’s some kind super, extended cut of “Blade Runner 2049” kicking around, but according to Denis Villeneuve, it was an idea that really didn’t get very far.
