Parts of Malayalam actor Joju George’s Pani are so powerful that you want more of that. Instead, you get large sections of namby-pamby filmmaking, hectoring the very forces that navigate the film somewhere close to meritoriousness, only to pull the proceedings into a morass of mediocrity.
Welcome to Thrissur the hamlet town in Kerala where, if we are to believe writer-director-actor Joju George, gangwars govern the city’s profile. If I were the Mayor of Thrissur I would worry about tourism. The film, powerful in parts, portrays Thrissur as infested with mobocracy and mayhem.
As the film opens with impressive ruggedness, two criminal drifters Don Sebas (Sagar Surya) and Siju (Junaiz VP) carry out an assassination in a crowded locality, pretend to be eyewitnesses to the crime, and then saunter into a supermarket where they misbehave with Gowri (Abhinaya) not knowing that she the lawfully wedded wife of one...

ReviewLokesh manages to weave in a lot of diversity among the characters – that of gender, class, caste, disability, religion – and not in a ‘tick-all-the-boxes’ way. N4 / ScreengrabLokesh Kumar’s N4 is set in Kasimedu, a hamlet in North Chennai that’s a major hub for fishing in the city. Appropriately, the film opens with a title song that captures life in the area, with visuals of beautiful silver fish being sold in the bustling market. What’s immediately arresting about the casting – at least to me – is the dusky skinned women actors playing the lead. How rare is it to see that in mainstream Tamil cinema, where the usual practice is to either cast pale-skinned women or brownface them in an attempt to make them suit a role. Vinusha Devi and Gabriella Sellus play Abhinaya and Soundarya, sisters in an unconventional family that has come together through a tragedy. They...

Movie: "Veeram"; Cast: Ajith Kumar, Tamannah Bhatia, Vidharth, Suhail Chandhok, Nassar, Santhanam, Pradeep Rawat, Ramesh Khanna, Abhinaya, Manochitra, Vidyullekha Raman, Devadarshini and Atul Kulkarni; Director: Siva; Rating: **1/2
In a constant effort to churn out a commercially successful product, our filmmakers completely ignore the fact that entertainment is not about hero-worshiping.
"Veeram" is a classic example, which elevates Ajith and leaves the rest of the ensemble cast behind. It's a pity to see talented actors merely reduced to a few scenes while the newcomers hardly have any presence. The film is dedicated to Ajith,.
