10 Rotten Netflix Original Movies That Are Actually Great
Image
Netflix has been offering high-quality original movies on its streaming site for almost ten years now. Back in 2015, the streaming site started strong with the captivating drama, Beasts of No Nation. Now, Netflix originals have won 23 Academy Awards and some have even earned cult status, such as 2023's excellent sci-fi thriller, They Cloned Tyrone.

Of course, not all Netflix original movies are received with such a warm welcome. There are plenty of films offered exclusively on the streaming site that have earned the dreaded "rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes. Arguably, the reviews of these movies aren't entirely accurate. Each of these movies may be a little better than their Rotten Tomatoes splat status makes them seem.

Like Father Is a Sweet Dramedy With Lovable Moments Rotten Tomatoes Score: 48%

Director: Lauren Miller Rogen Genre: Dramedy Runtime: 98 minutes

Rachel (Kristen Bell) is doubly surprised at her wedding in the dramedy, Like Father.

For ‘She Said’ Director Maria Schrader, Making a Movie Was Just Another Way to Get to the Truth
Image
When journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey published their first bombshell report on Harvey Weinstein in The New York Times in October 2017, the eventual Pulitzer Prize-winning expose included eight different accusers. Some of them were named (like actress Ashley Judd or former Miramax employee Lauren Madden), while others opted to tell their stories but to remain anonymous.

Navigating the comfort levels of each accuser when it came time to share their stories was key to Kantor and Twohey’s process. Five years later, as the story behind their investigation makes its way to the big screen in the form of Maria Schrader’s incendiary “She Said,” that same care and attention remains front and center.

So does the continued search for the truth. Like the women who inspired her film, the German director’s first English-language feature is rooted in a desire for veracity, done with the kind of thoughtfulness...

André Holland To Feature In Scripted Cruise Ship Comedy Podcast ‘The Ms Phoenix Rising’
Image
Exclusive: Moonlight’s André Holland is the latest A-list figure to turn to the world of scripted podcasting.

Holland, who starred as Kevin in the Oscar-winning film, will feature in mordant comedy The Ms Phoenix Rising alongside Anthony Arkin (Succession), Susan Blommaert (The Blacklist), Estelle Parsons (The Conners) and Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play).

Created by Trish Harnetiaux, the playwright behind Tin Cat Shoes and How to Get into Buildings, the six-part series comes from Playwrights Horizons Soundstage.

The show follows cruise ship The Ms Phoenix Rising, which sets sail in six weeks, marking the relaunch of the cruise ship industry after a prolonged shutdown. Urgent, budget-driven planning makes for a tense front office at Dane Cruising while they race to secure their place in history with fast marketing ideas and a reckless social campaign. Whose idea was it again to hype the “Christopher Columbus Route” through the Bahamas? Whatever.

‘Like Father’ Review (Netflix Original)
Stars: Kristen Bell, Danielle Davenport, Kimiko Glenn, Wynter Kullman, Kelsey Grammer, Brett Gelman, Jon Foster, Elisabeth Ness, Brian McCarthy, Keilly McQuail, Jen Zaborowski, Brittany Ross | Written and Directed by Lauren Miller

Lauren Miller’s directorial debut, Like Father, fits well into the canonical fatigue of the Netflix original, a harsh and sadly true statement that any film on the platform is becoming tainted with. Like Father, I hate to say, is almost certainly dead on arrival with so little intrigue or adhesive to even have a questionable release, made even more disappointing with the talent that’s castrated and simplified in a plot so numb and saturated, you can piece the jigsaw and surprise your friends as a psychic, within seconds.

To describe Miller’s film as simple would be somewhat an understatement. It is to be fair, a constraint of every grain of flair possible with zero ounces of originality within its bones.
