A Memorium in Four Colours – Jim Shooter
Image
This week we say goodbye to a true, true titan of comics history, as Jim Shooter pulls his chair up to the great writing, editing desk in the sky. Normally, when I have been doing these obituaries, I have passed over divisive elements of people’s careers. I don’t believe Shooter set out to be divisive in his distinguished career; he made decisions based on his love for comics. So the good, the bad and the ugly will remain this time and don’t think Shooter would have had it any other way. Living on the other side of the pond from all the big comics news, I discover things in different ways. On the morning of July 1st, I woke to an Instagram post from Marc Bernardin showing the cover to Secret Wars #4. Was he just posting a favourite cover or an image related to some movie news?...

Why Kevin Smith Paid Tribute To John Hughes In Dogma But Still Dumped On Home Alone
Image
I like to think that every filmmaker loves movies, but few filmmakers express their love of movies quite like Kevin Smith. Thanks to the success of "Clerks," he's arguably responsible for the frequency of characters discussing, debating, or simply referencing pop culture in film and television. (One of his jokes in that film even circled back and inspired the very franchise it alluded to in the case of "Andor.") He's also constantly popping up in documentaries (not to mention his podcast with Marc Bernardin) to give his thoughts on the intersection of art and culture. Smith is unapologetic in his acknowledgement of the art that shaped him, as well as the art that he thinks ... well ... sucks.

Of course, opinions and taste can change over time, but the blessing and curse of film is that whatever is recorded and makes it to the final cut is permanently frozen in time.

#Xodus: Bluesky Hits 20M Users as People Continue to Flee X
Image
A trickle is becoming a flood for Bluesky, the social media company that has seen spectacular growth since the presidential election. On Tuesday, the microblogging platform hit 20 million users, after averaging 1 million new users per day over the past five days.

According to a Nov. 13 post by Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, the site had 6 million users in late August, nearly 11 million in late October and hit 15 million users on Nov. 15. It added another 5 million users in just five days, with the explosive growth seen since Nov. 5, the day of the election, accelerating.

Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries of millions of users leaving Elon Musk’s X, as the site formerly known as Twitter descends into a mess of bots, extreme content, crypto scams, ads, pornography, racism, transphobia and misinformation.

Hollywood has been quick to adopt Bluesky, particularly with the entertainment industry’s aversion to the political views of Musk,...

“Bluesky Has the Juice”: Celebrities Flee “Toxic” X for Rival Social Media Site
Image
Call it a blue wave. A host of actors, directors, musicians, journalists and other prominent people are dumping X (formerly Twitter) and flocking to social media platform Bluesky.

In the past week, an increasing number of bold-faced names have announced that they plan to post less on X, or leave the platform altogether, citing myriad issues with the social media company, including far right content, hate speech, transphobia, racism, harassment, pornography, crypto scams, bots and the political views of owner Elon Musk, the billionaire oligarch who is a vocal supporter and financial backer of Donald Trump.

Musk’s ownership of X and his updates to content moderation on the platform have been pushing brands and media groups closer and closer to the exit. This week, The Guardian media group announced that it will stop posting on X, describing the site as a “toxic media platform.” On Nov. 4, the Berlin Film...

'Just 'Cause They Cut My Arm Off Doesn't Mean I'm Dead:' Samuel L. Jackson Teases Mace Windu's Possible Star Wars Return
Image
As the Star Wars universe continues to grow, several actors who worked on past projects in the faraway galaxy have reprized their roles. Samuel L. Jackson recently weighed in on whether his Mace Windu character might appear on-screen again.

Although the purple lightsaber-wielding Jedi lost an arm and fell to his death in 2005's Revenge of the Sith, Jackson thinks a return is very possible. "I mean, there's a long history of one-armed, one-handed people in the Star Wars universe. So, just 'cause they cut my arm off, and I fell out of a window, doesn't mean I'm dead," the actor said during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "I'm a Jedi! I'm the second-most powerful Jedi in the universe, next to Yoda. Yeah, he's out there walking the Earth with Jules," he added, referring to his Pulp Fiction character.

Star Trek: The Next Generation had the idea to bring back Khan
Image
Star Trek: The Original Series debuted a challenging foe for Captain Kirk [William Shatner] in the episode "Space Seed." Ricardo Montalban played the part of the augmented Khan Noonien Singh who, like most villains, want world domination....or space domination. Of course, Khan was defeated by Kirk and sent to Ceti Alpha V to live out the rest of his life with his team of soliders and new wife. But then the planet became a wasteland, which cost Khan his wife, and he and his team were forced to eke out an existence. We all know how that worked out when Khan returned in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Khan dies at the end of the movie, but a spec script for Star Trek: The Next Generation had the idea to bring him into Captain Picard's [Patrick Stewart] world. Supposedly, according to writer and director Marc Bernardin, who...

Star Trek: The Next Generation Almost Brought Khan Noonien Singh Back With A Twist
Image
When he first appeared in the "Star Trek" episode "Space Seed", Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán) was merely a villain-of-the-week. Khan was a remnant of the long-ago Eugenics Wars, a conflict that broke out on Earth in the late 1990s, and which contributed to the near-destruction of the planet several decades later. Khan, genetically enhanced, managed to escape Earth in cryogenic stasis, only to be found and revived by the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise nearly 200 years later. As one might predict, Khan, still thirsty for power, attempted to take over the Enterprise.

It wouldn't be until the release of Nicholas Meyer's "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in 1982 that the character would become mythic. Montalbán returned to play a Khan that was miffed after having been abandoned, and who goes on a mad quest to find and kill Admiral Kirk (William Shatner). In "Space Seed,...

Quick Links All the Disney Villains Try Taking Over the World Why Was Kingdom Keepers Stopped?

Most of us know by now that numerous high-profile Disney movies are based on books. Some of these include 1989s The Little Mermaid (which was based on an 1837 fairy tale), 1991s Beauty and the Beast (inspired by a 1740 novel), and Aladdin (originally composed in the late 1200s). Even though these classics are trademarks of both the Walt Disney Company and the animated genre as a whole, a novel franchise that was born within the last 20 years could have been Disneys best movie to date. Written by Ridley Pearson, the plot involved iconic villains such as Maleficent, Captain Hook, Cruella De Vil, and "the most powerful demon Walt Disney ever created," trying to take over both Disney Theme Parks and the world. "The Force Is Mine": Star Wars' New Villain Is the Best Evidence Yet That Jedi Don't Understand the Force
Image
The Shroud, an all-new villain in Star Wars canon, exhibits previously unseen Force abilities derived from viewing the Force as one single current of energy as opposed to a 'light' and a 'dark' side, proving the Jedi misunderstand the Force. The views of the Final Occultation cult aligns with the Shroud, claiming no distinction between the light and dark side of the Force. Rey's potential new Jedi Academy may incorporate ideas of combining light and dark sides of the Force, meaning this new addition to Star Wars canon could have a lasting impact.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Wars: Mace Windu #4! The Jedi pride themselves in being the galactic keepers of knowledge in the Force as well as masters in the light side, yet as Star Wars lore continues to expand, its becoming increasingly obvious that the Jedi dont understand the Force as well as they think they do.

Mace Windu Reveals The Dark Contradiction At The Heart Of His Purple Lightsaber Fighting Style

Having to ignite his iconic purple lightsaber, Windu comments on the classic Star Wars weapon which feels somewhat contradictory considering Windu's known fighting style in the established canon.

Forget Krayt Dragons - Mace Windu Reveals 1 Star Wars Monster Is Immune to Lightsabers
Image
Bore Worms are the new threat in the Star Wars universe, immune to lightsabers, unlike Krayt Dragons. Mace Windu and Azita Cruz face off against these lightsaber-resistant creatures while on a crucial mission. The introduction of Bore Worms could potentially change Star Wars canon forever, leaving a lasting impact.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Wars: Mace Windu #2! Krayt Dragons are monstrous creatures that should absolutely be feared in the Star Wars universe, but Mace Windu just faced another ‘sand worm-esque’ monster that puts the Krayt Dragon to shame for one very important reason in particular: they’re immune to lightsabers. Krayts may be strong, but there’s no evidence to suggest that a lightsaber wouldn’t injure one, which is something a Bore Worm cannot relate to.

In a preview for Star Wars: Mace Windu #2 by Marc Bernardin and Georges Jeanty, Mace Windu is on a mission to extract a...

Wrath Of Khan Would've Been Ruined By A Rejected Star Trek: Tng Episode
Image
Khan Noonien Singh's legacy was almost tarnished in a rejected Star Trek: Tng episode. Tng's final movie, Nemesis, effectively remade Wrath of Khan with Picard and Data. A potential fifth Tng movie involving Khan never materialized due to the failure of Nemesis.

A rejected storyline for Star Trek: The Next Generation would have undermined Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) and ruined the ending of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Widely considered to be one of the best Star Trek movies of all time, The Wrath of Khan has left a lasting impression on the franchise to this day. There have been many attempts to recapture the spirit of the acclaimed Star Trek: The Original Series movie, with the most notable being J.J. Abrams' controversial Wrath of Khan remake, Star Trek into Darkness.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is also guilty of revisiting Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan...

Dark Horse, Marc Bernardin Tackling Comic Adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Anansi Boys’ (Exclusive)
Image
Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel Anansi Boys is heading to the sequential art world of comics.

The 2005 novel, a New York Times best-seller that won the Locus and British Fantasy Awards, is being adapted by Dark Horse Comics, which has set screenwriter and comics author Marc Bernardin to pen what will be an eight-issue miniseries.

Shawn Martinbrough, perhaps best known as the longtime artist of the Robert Kirkman title Thief of Thieves as well as Marvel’s Luke Cage Noir, is drawing the book, which will have colors by Chris Sotomayor and letters by Jim Campbell. The first issue is due to hit stores June 26.

The novel told the travails of “Fat” Charlie Nancy, who leads a boring life as a boring Londoner until he discovers two things: that his recently deceased father was, in fact, Anansi, the trickster god of African folklore, and that he has a twin brother he’s never met.

Star Wars Redefines Mace Windu's Death with 4 Words
Image
Mace Windu's death was caused by his own words, "I don't underestimate anyone," which made him jump to try to kill Palpatine rather than arrest him. Windu's refusal to bring Palpatine in alive was driven by his lack of faith in the legal system's ability to handle someone as powerful as Palpatine. Windu's quote, "I don't underestimate anyone," proved to be a tragic irony as he died because he underestimated Anakin Skywalker's pain and susceptibility to the dark side.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Wars: Mace Windu #1! Star Wars’ Mace Windu died in Revenge of the Sith after he was betrayed by Anakin Skywalker while trying to arrest Supreme Chancellor Palpatine aka Darth Sidious. Fans are well aware of this, as well as the fact that Mace Windu’s death marked the beginning of the Great Jedi Purge. However, what they may not know is that Mace Windu...

On the latest episode of the Fatman Beyond podcast he hosts alongside writer Marc Bernardin, Smith talked a bit more about the movie we’ll call Jay and Silent Bob 3 for now, saying that he’s working to take the script in unpredictable directions. Image
Mace Windu is returning to Star Wars in an Andor-style prison break storyline, reinforcing his badass reputation. Mace Windu goes undercover as a guard to bust someone out of prison and faces conflict with the prison warden. This new comic effectively merges Mace Windu with the popular Andor storyline, featuring a prison break and utilizing Mace Windu's Jedi skills to his advantage.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Revelations Upon his debut, Mace Windu was one of the more badass additions to Star Wars canon, not just because he was played by Samuel L. Jackson, but because of the unique color of his lightsaber blade, which was eventually explained to be an indicator of a Jedi who can tap into both the light and dark sides of the Force. And now, his badass reputation is becoming even more pronounced, as Mace Windu is returning to Star Wars in...

Star Trek Needs More Movies, Says Lower Decks Creator
Image
Star Trek movies are crucial for creating new fans and introducing them to the franchise. Watching a 2-hour Star Trek movie is a great way for new viewers to dive into the franchise without being overwhelmed by the TV series. There is unlimited story and movie potential for Star Trek that remains untapped, and more movies would benefit the overall franchise. #StarTrekMovies

Star Trek needs new movies, according to Star Trek: Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan. The last Star Trek movie released theatrically was Star Trek Beyond in 2016, and a fourth J.J. Abrams-produced Star Trek movie has been mired in development hell for years. While Paramount+ is mounting made-for-streaming Star Trek movies planned to release every 2 years, starting with Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Paramount Pictures' Star Trek movie franchise is still in drydock.

Lion King Crosses Over With Human Centipede In Image That Casually Ruins Your Childhood
Image
A revolting image mashes up an innocent scene from The Lion King with the grotesque concept of The Human Centipede, ruining childhood memories. Disney movies are being reimagined as horror films due to the recent success of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. The Lion King, inspired by various sources, could be the next Disney movie to receive a horror reimagining, exploring the dark aspects of the animal kingdom.

The Lion King crosses over with The Human Centipede in a truly revolting image that casually ruins childhoods. The Lion King began as an animated Disney movie in 1994, touting timeless themes of family, responsibility, and the circle of life, which make it a culturally relevant and enduring classic. The Human Centipede, on the other hand, is a controversial horror film from 2009 that is infamous for its grotesque concept of surgically connecting people mouth-to-anus.

"My Experience Was...Odd": John Wick Spinoff Producer Explains How Show Went From 10 Episodes To 3 Movies
Image
Key Takeaways: The John Wick spinoff The Continental was originally intended to be a 10-episode series, but it was shortened to three TV movies. The decision to reduce the length of the series resulted in a combination of different stories from different episodes. Bernardin, one of the show's producers, expressed disappointment with the changes and hinted at disagreement with a particular casting choice, possibly referring to Mel Gibson's involvement.

A producer of the John Wick spinoff The Continental explains how the show went from 10 episodes to 3 movies. Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga became a cult sensation when the original film released in 2014, then evolved into a genuine worldwide movie phenomenon through a trio of sequels. Now thanks to a currently-streaming Peacock spinoff series, the world invented through Chad Stahelski’s quartet of action-packed films has received a further expansion, taking audiences back in time to the 1970s and the early...

Kumail Nanjiani Says He Didn’t Receive Offer To Reprise Prismo Role In ‘Adventure Time: Fionna And Cake’: “They Never Told Me”
Image
Kumail Nanjiani will not be returning to the Adventure Time universe in the new spinoff Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake and that’s because he was never informed of the offer to reprise his voice role of Prismo.

The new Max animated series will not have Nanjiani voice Prismo, something that the Eternals actor would have loved to have done again.

“Yeah that’s not me. I would have loved to have voiced Prismo again. He’s one of my absolute favorite characters I’ve ever had the honor of playing. He is very close to my heart,” Nanjiani shared in a since-deleted post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “Unfortunately they never asked me to come back and voice him again. I would have done it for free.”

Showrunner Adam Muto replied to the actor denying that the production hadn’t reached out to offer him the Prismo role again.
