President Donald Trump attempted to nullify preemptive pardons granted to members of the Jan. 6 committee that he has suggested he would like to prosecute.

“Many of us sacrificed our careers trying to take these people on and Newsom’s trying to make a career with them.”
That was former Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger reacting to California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom having the Trump White House’s onetime chief strategist Steve Bannon on his podcast today. Though a Republican, Kinzinger served on the the House Committee on the Jan. 6 Attack and has been vocal in his opposition to Trump’s claims of voter fraud and attempts to overturn the results.
Newsom has used his new podcast to engage with far Right figures, having unusually friendly conversations with his first two guests, Michael Savage and Charlie Kirk, as well as with Bannon this week. In a world that could use more bipartisanship, that kind of amity is arguably a good thing. But many, like Kinzinger, saw the Bannon interview as a betrayal.

As the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival prepares to host its 27th edition, which runs March 6 – 16, festival director Orestis Andreadakis sees no shortage of threats to truth, freedom and the values on which the democratic order is based. “Four months have passed since the [Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival], but it seems like we’re already living in a completely different world — unfortunately, not a better one,” Andreadakis tells Variety.
Likening the times to “a historical documentary about the 1930s, screened backwards,” he describes world events as “an educational documentary that taught us nothing. It is a testimony for the horror of fascism and totalitarianism that it seems we have forgotten,” he continues. “It is a film record of a horrific historical reality that some are trying to repeat in the worst possible way.”

As Cph:dox gears up for its 2025 edition, organizers have unveiled an audacious program of more than 200 films with a sharp focus on human rights under the theme “Right Here, Right Now.”
With 94 world premieres – 68 of them feature-length, the highest number in the festival’s history – Cph:dox continues to expand its global footprint.
For the third consecutive year, all main competition titles are world premieres. While this is not a formal selection criterion, artistic director Niklas Engstrøm tells Variety, “The fact that top directors chose to premiere their films with us speaks volumes about how the festival has grown.” He adds that shifting the festival from November to March in 2017 strengthened its global standing, positioning it as the go-to European launchpad for U.S. filmmakers after Sundance.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is back tonight, ending its holiday hiatus. Fans will be even happier to know the show has big things planned for the week.
Stephen Colbert signed off just before Christmas. He had spent the final few days of 2024 mocking "President" Elon Musk and still trying to wrap his head around some of President-elect Donald Trump's administration picks.
A refreshed and recharged Colbert opens up the Ed Sullivan Theater tonight for a brand-new episode. It comes on January 6, giving the late-night TV host a chance to acknowledge the anniversary of the 2021 insurrection.
To do that, Colbert welcomes former Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger to the show. Kinzinger was a member of the January 6 committee in the House. Expect the two to discuss what's happened (or hasn't) since that infamous day, the incoming Trump administration, and more.
Then, old Late Show friend Jon Batiste is back in the building.

As the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection looms and Donald Trump prepares for his second inauguration as U.S. President, The Last Republican offers a remarkable profile of courage and conviction against daunting threats, sycophantic fealty, and blatant lies masking contemptible cowardice. Director Steve Pink (known mainly for his comedy movies) spent a year documenting Adam Kinzinger's final days in political office.
Kinzinger, a former US Representative from Illinois and die-hard conservative who voted 93% of the time with Trump, was one of two Republicans on the House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack. He, along with Liz Cheney, voted to impeach Trump and recommend him for criminal referral to the Justice Department. Kinzinger was essentially ousted from office and ruthlessly targeted by the party he'd spent a lifetime supporting in the aftermath.

When it comes to politicians showing courage, the bar has been on the floor over the last decade. In a system where confrontation is rewarded over competence or cooperation, it’s a rare thing to see leaders putting their ideals to the test, especially if it costs them their elected position. Leave it then to Steve Pink, the director behind the sublime Hot Tub Time Machine and scribe of Cusackian masterpieces, Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, to tell the story of former congressman Adam Kinzinger in The Last Republican with the breeziness of a comic book film and the impact of a deep journalistic dive. The epithetic irony of his last name – Pink’s politics lay quite left of center – makes for a perfect dynamic duo of differing ideologies, coming together to tell this unique, powerful, and sometimes ridiculous story of contemporary America.

The Adam Kinzinger-focused The Last Republican was one of the hottest documentaries at the Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine), the movie chronicles the then-Illinois Congressman as he breaks ranks with his Republican colleagues to criticize Donald Trump and join the Jan. 6 committee. The movie has seen its relevance skyrocket in the wake of Trump’s election last month.
In this exclusive trailer drop, Kinzinger can be seen outlining his motivations. “It’s not about a political view. It’s about what it is to turn against everything you ever belonged to because of some red line you can’t cross,” he says, in a trailer that highlights both the serious and lighter aspects of Kinzinger’s story.

They call it “Hot Topics” for a reason: Sometimes The View‘s cohosts get truly fired up during the discussions. That was certainly the case on Monday’s (December 9) episode, when things devolved into a bit of a screaming match between Whoopi Goldberg and Ana Navarro. The conversation began with a calmer discussion of Donald Trump’s interview on Meet the Press, in which he talked about him likely pardoning people who were convicted of crimes related to the January 6th insurrection and believing that members of the congressional committee investigating it — including Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney — should be jailed instead. “First of all, thank God for Liz Cheney,” Navarro said of the news. “She’s not stalking to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring. The comedy roundtable program that asks comics and newsmakers to pick and probe the week’s most important and sometimes off-putting headlines will get a second season at CNN, part of a bid by the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet to build a Saturday-night schedule that hinges on newsy analysis and comedic satire.
“For its inaugural season, ‘Have I Got News For You’ has been a welcome and lively extension of the CNN brand, and our viewers continue to show enthusiasm for comic relief on Saturday nights” said Amy Entelis, executive vice president of talent, CNN Originals and creative development, in a statement. The show is led by Roy Wood Jr. and features Amber Ruffin and Michael Ian Black.
The network has been quietly experimenting with a different genre of programming on Saturdays, pairing “Hignfy” with repeats...

Updated, with Trump comment: Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski said that they met with Donald Trump on Friday, in what they described as an effort to restart communications with the president-elect after years of criticism and warning about his rhetoric and potential return to office.
At the opening of Morning Joe, Brzezinski said that, after expressing their desire to meet with Trump, they were given the opportunity “to do just that” on Friday. It was the first time they had seen him in seven years, she said.
Scarborough said, “We talked about a lot of issues, including abortion, mass deportations, threats of political retribution against political opponents and media outlets. We talked about that a good bit. It is going to come as no surprise to anyone who watches this show, has watched it over the past year or the past decade, that we didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues,...

If Kamala Harris wins the presidency, one aspect of her campaign that will be highlighted will be her support from Never Trumpers, the group of Republicans who want to ensure that the former president never makes it back to the White House.
In the election of 2024, these figures have been some of the most vocal in making the case that this isn’t a normal election cycle, that democracy is at stake. Proof enough is that many of them will be casting their ballots for a Democrat for the first time.
Adam Kinzinger is one of the them, having spoken at the Democratic National Convention and appeared on the campaign trail for Harris. Steve Pink’s The Last Republican is backstory of how Kinzinger, a staunch conservative, got to that place. The Last Republican shines a light on a pivotal moment in recent history through the eyes of former politician Adam Kinzinger. As one of the few Republicans willing to break ranks after the 2020 election, Kinzinger knew speaking out could spell the end of his career. But with democracy itself feeling fragile, looking the other way wasn’t an option.
The documentary details Kinzinger’s final months in office. By then, he’d already drawn ire from his party for voting to impeach Donald Trump over the January 6th attack. When asked to join the committee investigating the insurrection, Kinzinger took the unpopular step of cooperating—not because he wanted to, but because our system of government was at stake.
Delving deep into this conscience-driven choice is director Steve Pink. An unlikely pair at first glance, Pink the liberal and Kinzinger the conservative find common ground in their concern for America’s future.

This year, documentaries that tackle pressing political issues including immigration, abortion and the Jan. 6 insurrection were meant to make an impact on the 2024 presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. While some, like Errol Morris’ immigration control documentary “Separated” and Matt Tyrnauer’s “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid” both found distribution deals prior to Election Day with MSNBC and CNN respectively, there are many more docus that have been or will be self distributed that American voters on both sides would benefit from watching — even after the election.
As both Democrats and Republicans gear up for potential unrest and protracted legal battles following the results of the election, docus like “64 Days: The Insurrection Playbook” “The Last Republican” and “Zurawski V. Texas” are arguably more important viewing than ever before.
Director Nick Quested embedded with the Proud Boys and other far-right groups in the months leading up to the Jan.

Exclusive: Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger may not be running for Congress, but he’ll be at the center of another campaign this fall – for Oscar recognition.
Deadline can reveal The Last Republican, the documentary about Kinzinger directed by Steve Pink, will get a week-long Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles beginning November 22, accompanied by special screenings in New York, San Francisco, and additional theaters across Los Angeles.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, documents Kinzinger’s final term representing his district in Northern Illinois when he made the bold choice to join the select congressional committee investing the January 6th insurrection, knowing it would cost him his political career. In February 2022 the Republican National Committee voted to censure Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney – the only other Republican to join the Democratic-led committee – for participating in the House investigation. Despite immense pressure from his party,...

Editor’s Note: In an earlier version of this article, it said that Vice President Harris called Fox News’ Bret Baier a “real journalist.” In fact, the Democrat referred to Baier as a “serious journalist.” We apologize for the error & have corrected it.
“I’m in the middle of responding to the point you’re raising, and I’d like to finish,” Vice President Kamala Harris sternly told Fox News’ Bret Baier today in her first appearance on the Rupert Murdoch-owned outlet as the anchor repeatedly spoke over her.
Jumping into the belly of the beast at the conservative cable newser for the first time in her long career, Harris found herself being pilloried by Baier, especially over illegal immigration and border security. Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger has become a hero to Democrats for turning on Donald Trump, but it’s come at great personal and political cost.
In a new interview for Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, Kinzinger reveals he, his wife, and their toddler have become the target of constant death threats from Trump supporters after he had the audacity to join the January 6th select congressional committee investigating the former president’s role in the capital insurrection. He says even his parents were subjected to abuse from family members and friends angered by Kinzinger’s principled actions.

As of late, it's tricky to find a politician who's standing on a platform for the American people rather than a circus act. "Patriotism" can oftentimes be synonymous with unquestioning, unwavering loyalty to one party or the other. In a minefield like that, Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger is a rarity, which prompted filmmaker and left-leaning Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) to join forces with the politician and document his final year in office in The Last Republican.

His post was just the latest in a long line of X messages seemingly designed to draw attention and outrage — while major advertisers shun the site.
Musk’s post on Sunday was in the wake of the potential assassination attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump.

For documentary The Last Republican, director Steve Pink followed Adam Kinzinger, who went against his party to criticise Donald Trump in the wake of an insurrection
“Donald Trump is a weak man pretending to be strong. He is a small man pretending to be big. He’s a faithless man pretending to be righteous. He’s a perpetrator who can’t stop playing the victim. He puts on quite a show but there is no real strength there.”
It was no surprise to hear such rhetoric cheered to the rafters at the recent Democratic national convention in Chicago. But the words were not spoken by a Democrat. They came from the mouth of a stranger in a strange land: the former Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger.

“The Last Republican” arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend, and the documentary marks a surprising turn from Steve Pink, co-writer of “High Fidelity” and “Grosse Pointe Blank” and the director of both “Hot Tub Time Machine” movies. The film centers on Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger, who broke with his party in an effort to hold Donald Trump responsible for the Jan. 6 insurrection. Kinzinger was among 10 Republicans who voted to impeach the president for instigating an insurrection, later serving on the Congressional committee to investigate Jan. 6.
Why choose Kinzinger as the subject of this documentary, which sees the right-wing lawmaker open up to a left-wing documentarian? “I’m a comedy director, right?” Pink told TheWrap editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman at TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design. “My whole life has been the subversion of expectation and surprise. Initially, “Hot Tub Time Machine” director Steve Pink wasn’t sure about making “The Last Republican,” a documentary about former U.S. Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger. As a self-professed far-left progressive, Pink didn’t know if Kinzinger, a conservative whose efforts to hold Donald Trump accountable for the Jan. 6 insurrection, was a worthy doc subject.
“The thought was that we are both from Illinois, so that was cool and we both have a Midwestern orientation, but I just couldn’t imagine a single thing I would agree with him on, except for this one thing, which was clearly that something new was happening here in American life where the nature of our democracy was and is being questioned,” says Pink.

It’s a sign of the truly bizarre political times in which we live that the new documentary about former Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger was made not by any of the usual filmmaking suspects. The Last Republican, receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, wasn’t helmed by, say, Michael Moore, Errol Morris, or Barbara Kopple, but rather Steve Pink. It only makes sense when you find out that one of Pink’s previous directorial efforts, Hot Tub Time Machine, is Kinzinger’s favorite film. “It’s the thing that sold me,” Kinzinger jokingly comments, well aware of the director’s ultra-liberal leanings. “You have contempt for what I believe, in terms of political viewpoints,” he acknowledges.
Now that Kinzinger has become a media personality, best-selling author, and darling of the Democratic Party (he recently spoke at their national convention), it’s easy to gloss over how...

Liz Cheney, the former congresswoman who was ousted from GOP leadership for her criticism and opposition to Donald Trump, said that she will vote for Kamala Harris in the November election.
“As a conservative, as someone who believes and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” Cheney said at an event at Duke University.
Harris said that it was “crucially important for people to recognize not only…the danger that Trump poses, something that should prevent people from voting for him, but I don’t believe that we have to be writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states.”
Cheney served as vice chair of the January 6th Committee, the House investigation of the attack on the Capitol that ultimately recommended criminal charges against Trump.

Kamala Harris leaves Chicago today with energy and enthusiasm that reached a fever pitch on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, something that would have sounded too-good-to-be-true just over a month ago.
Her speech was biographical, centrist and patriotic, with delegates waving small and large flags on the floor of the United Center. She compared the exuberance to the GOP convention in 1980 in Detroit, where Ronald Reagan was nominated.
