Jeff Rowles is known for I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore (2017), Rebel Ridge (2024), and Showing Up (2022).
Born in Central Pennsylvania, Jeff received his M.A. in Sociology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and relocated to the Pacific Northwest in the early 2000's to work in the nonprofit sector, supporting the work of environmental and public-interest groups. It was there he met a collective of artists and activists who, inspired by emerging accessibility to digital technology, were teaching themselves and others filmmaking, documenting their work and sharing resources and knowledge freely.
Inspired by this community, as well as the burgeoning independent cinema movement in America and abroad, Jeff began studying filmmaking, collaborating with like-minded artists to write and produce genre exercises including short narrative, sketch comedy, documentary, commercials, music videos, and scripts.
It was during this time that Jeff wrote, directed, and edited his first feature film, Suit of Lights, which he co-produced on a crowdfunded budget of around 18k USD. The movie was shot in 15 days with a cast of both trained and untrained actors and relied partially on improvisation and a fluid script, with early scenes informing character and story development as shooting progressed. The film had its world premiere in 2014 at The Oaxaca Film Festival in Oaxaca, Mexico, won a Golden Palm Award at the Mexico International Film Festival, and took home Best Director and Best Actor awards at the Oregon Independent Film Festival.
Jeff's first opportunity in the film industry was on Kelly Reichardt's Night Moves (2013), where he worked as a production and post-production assistant, and also had a minor speaking role in the movie. He has remained a frequent collaborator of Reichardt and her producers at filmscience, serving as executive assistant on films Certain Women (2016) and Showing Up (2022).
Jeff was an Associate Producer on Macon Blair's I Don't Feel at Home In this World Anymore (2017), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, as well as Co-Producer on Ritesh Batra's film Photograph (2019), which premiered in 2019 in the US and Europe, respectively, at The Sundance Film Festival and The Berlin International Film Festival.
An Associate Producer on Jeremy Saulnier's latest film, Rebel Ridge (2024), he previously served as executive assistant on Saulnier's thriller Green Room (2015).
Over the years, Jeff has also directed numerous music videos for bands including The Thermals, Scout Niblett, Street Nights, 1939 Ensemble, Darren Hanlon, and others.
