‘Inside’ Review: A Tragic Prison Tale Anchored by Three Memorable Performances
Image
Charles Williams’s feature-length directorial debut, Inside, centers on a trio of dangerous men who are forced into each other’s orbit, leading to an outcome that’s both violently chaotic and tragically predictable. And the more this prison drama reveals about the three of them, the more that contradiction seems to describe their entire lives.

Warren (Guy Pearce) is set to be released on parole in just a few days, but he won’t make it out the door alive unless he can find a way to pay off his considerable gambling debts first. He learns that a massive bounty has been placed on the head of Mark Shepard (Cosmo Jarvis)—a particularly notorious criminal who’s taken to delivering bizarre religious sermons in the prison chapel—but doesn’t want to jeopardize his release by shanking Shepard himself. When a volatile, impressionable teenager named Mel (Vincent Miller) becomes Shepard’s new cellmate,...

Colin From Accounts Is the Funny, Lighthearted Rom-Com We All Need Right Now — Read Our Review
Image
Romantic comedies are an endangered species these days. They’re practically extinct from movie theaters, and most TV rom-coms are either not all that funny or weighed down by metric tons of plot convolutions. But I have good news: Paramount+’s Australian charmer Colin From Accounts, returning for Season 2 this Thursday — I’ve seen all eight Season 2 episodes — is a shining example of romantic comedy at its very best, with lots of genuine laughs, pleasurably low stakes and winning performances from stars/co-creators Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer.

Now this is the part of the review where I’d normally tell you about the plot,...

‘Colin from Accounts’ Season 2 – Episode Guide (When Will The New Episodes Come Out?)
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The beloved Australian rom-com series is finally back for its second season and while I want to say that everything is going hunky dory for our leading couple, in my opinion, it just won’t end up that way. Created by and starring the real-life couple Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall, Colin from Accounts is back with its much anticipated second season with the always-bickering Ashley and Gordon.

Colin from Accounts picks up the story of Ashley and Gordon two weeks after they gave up Colin to a family of three. Now, regretting their decision they have been pestering the family to give Colin so that they don’t have to deal with the question of what their relationship is like if Colin is taken out of the equation because he was the one who brought them together.

Guy Pearce in Prison Drama ‘Inside,’ From Palme d’Or Winner Charles Williams (Exclusive)
Image
Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.

The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

Breakout Australian Sitcom ‘Colin From Accounts’ Season 2 Goes Into Production
Image
Breakout Australia comedy Colin From Accounts is back in production.

An official green light of Season 2 of the hit Binge sitcom came in August, after writers and stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer chose to down their pens in solidarity with WGA strike in the U.S. over the summer.

Exec producer Alison Hurbert-Burns from Binge told Deadline in October production would begin in “coming months,” adding: “As an Australian program it was outside of the strike, but they just felt it was the right thing to do.”

Brammall and Dyer finished the scripts once a deal was struck at the end of September. Production is now back underway across Sydney, with Easy Tiger Productions and CBS Studios returning the produce.

The show follows the lives of two flawed and funny people who begin an unconventional romance after being brought together when Ash (Dyer) spontaneously flashes her nipple at Gordon...

‘Colin From Accounts’ Review: Paramount+’s Aussie Import Hits the Rom-Com Sweet Spot
Image
With the new series Colin From Accounts — streaming on Paramount+ following a Foxtel/Binge debut in its native Australia — creator/stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer have set themselves possibly one of the most difficult challenges in the history of romantic comedies.

How do you make a show in which, within the first five minutes, the main characters are responsible for running over an adorable dog and, by the end of eight episodes, have the audience liking those characters, if not necessarily rooting for their coupling?

The answer comes down to clever writing and the chemistry between Brammall and Dyer, who are married in addition to their collaborations here. Colin From Accounts never wholly shakes its “They ran over a dog!” bleakness — the dog, it should be emphasized clearly, is mostly Ok — nor does it wholly break out from the rom-com conventions it’s so keenly aware of. But it...

If You’re Not Watching Colin From Accounts, Why Not?
Image
The best rom-com couples make it look easy; the absolute best convince you that none of it stops when the cameras do. The laughs, back-and-forth, and buzzy attraction feel so undisputable that of course they carry on without an audience, are you kidding? Those guys?! They’re the real deal.

Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall, the co-writers and stars of Australian comedy series Colin From Accounts, are the real deal. Not just because they’re a married couple with a child, but because their show is one of the best rom-coms around. It’s the story of medical student Ashley and craft brewer Gordon, a pair who meet when he – distracted by an act of…titillation on her part – accidentally runs over a dog. It’s a classic meet-cute, just one that results in a $12k vet bill and an ongoing shared custody dispute.

The dog lives, of course. He...

Aussie Gem ‘Colin From Accounts’ Is Modern Love With Toilet Paper Stuck to Its Shoe: TV Review
Image
Where the theatrical romcom seems to be undergoing a moment of crisis – struggling to honor the patented formulas of yore while meeting the demands of the modern multiplex crowd – TV looks to have adapted more rapidly and skilfully to the recent remapping of gender relations and personal boundaries.

One creative response has been to engineer intentionally cringier, Larry David-influenced variations on the romcom theme: shows reliant upon the acquired taste of foot-in-mouth, where far from star-crossed lovers make altogether unsmooth progress towards happiness, traversing an ever-shifting minefield of social mores.

Eight-part Aussie comedy “Colin From Accounts” – currently wooing BBC viewers after debuting on Antipodean streaming service Binge late last year – follows in the footsteps of the much-adored Sharon Horgan/Rob Delaney vehicle “Catastrophe.”

Again, we watch – sometimes through fingers – as frazzled folk inch awkwardly towards intimacy, only this time they’re united not by accidental pregnancy, but the stray...
