‘Poker Face’ EP & Showrunner Tony Tost On His Season 2 Episode “Hometown Hero” & Not Overdirecting Natasha Lyonne On The Page – Crew Call Podcast
Image
During the early part of Tony Tost’s writing career, he was a poet and an academic. He found his way to TV writing thanks to his pal, True Detective co-creator Nic Pizzolatto. He tells us about his journey and offers up advice to aspiring writers on today’s Crew Call podcast.

The Poker Face showrunner gets a written-by credit for Season 2’s episode 5, “Hometown Hero.” Poker Face creator Rian Johnson wanted to set an episode of the Natasha Lyonne-starring slacker clairvoyant series in the world of minor-league baseball.

“Hometown Hero” follows a used-to-be-a-contender 100mph pitcher Russ Waddell (Simon Rex), whose losing streak nearly puts his minor-league team out of business. After he’s given notice by the coach, he bands with his teammates to bet on their losing streak to make an enormous sum of money. A new firecracker pitcher enters the scene. There’s blackmail and murder,...

Matthew McConaughey, Nic Pizzolatto Reunite For 'Mike Hammer' Movie
Image
Mike Hammeris about to look a lot like Rust Cohle — or maybe it's the other way around. The point is: Matthew McConaughey is reuniting with his True Detective creator, Nic Pizzolatto, to bring one of the most iconic, and aggressive, detectives to the big screen, with everyone's favorite Texan taking on the titular role. That's right, the prolifically-penned, pulp-y private eye, Mike Hammer, will be the focus of Pizzolatto's next scripted project.

The news, which was first reported by Deadline, comes on the heels of McConaughey's return to the screen in The Rivals of Amziah King after a six-year absence (if you don't count all the cartoon voice work he's done in the intervening years). And while the film's production house, Skydance, has yet to secure a director, with talents like McConaughey and Pizzolatto on board, it will probably only be a matter of days — rather than months — before a name is announced.

Nic Pizzolatto Says Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Are ‘Open’ to Reprising Their ‘True Detective’ Roles

"I Have Another Story": 'True Detective' Creator Teases Reunion With Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey After 'Night Country' Backlash
Image
True Detective Season 1 has long been regarded as the anthology series' best. Starring Woody Harrelson as Martin Hart and Matthew McConaughey as Rustin Cohle, the season launched the series created by Nic Pizzolatto for HBO. There have been four seasons of the show created over the past 11 years, each with a different cast and characters. Pizzolatto had been at the helm of the first three before departing, and Issa Lopez took over. Pizzolatto recently appeared on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, where he teased a Season 1 True Detective reunion, following Rust and Marty in an all-new story. “I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day,” he said in the 65th episode of the podcast. Pizzolatto added:

“It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head.

True Detective Creator Has A New Idea For Season One Characters
Image
True Detective is one of the greatest modern detective shows and one of the greatest crime shows ever made. The series is an HBO original and an anthology that features new characters every season. The first season is widely regarded as the best the show had to offer. It was unforgivingly dark and tackled some disturbing story elements and themes. It blended the occult into the terrors of reality in a unique way that just about no other shows have been able to mimic.

Now, Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the show, has appeared on an episode of the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, and spoke briefly about the existence of an idea that would bring back the main characters from season one that were played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who both earned Emmy nominations for their performances.

McConaughey and Harrelson Open to Revisiting True Detective Origins
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective (2014)
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto says he has “another story” for Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, signalling that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson could revisit the roles that electrified the show’s 2014 debut season. Speaking during promotional duties for his directorial feature Easy’s Waltz, the writer added that he has discussed the idea with both actors and “the guys are open to it,” though no script exists yet and no formal talks with HBO or Max have begun.

The remarks arrive 16 months after True Detective: Night Country—the Jodie Foster-led fourth season produced without Pizzolatto’s involvement—posted franchise-high multi-platform audiences and collected multiple awards, bolstering HBO’s anthology plans with other showrunners. Pizzolatto acknowledged that he stepped away voluntarily and called the network’s decision to proceed without him “appropriate,” even while maintaining executive-producer credit. His potential reunion with the original stars could therefore run parallel to, rather than replace,...

‘True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto Says Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson Are “Open To” Reprising Cohle & Hart For “Another Story”
Image
Despite having “always been pitched as an anthology,” True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto said the show is perhaps not quite done with Season 1’s Cohle and Hart.

Speaking on a recent episode of Tim Green’s Nothing Left Unsaid podcast, the four-time Emmy-nominated showrunner said that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would be “open” to reprising their roles, though a script has not yet been written.

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that, who knows, maybe we’ll do it one day,” he began, adding that he didn’t feel beholden to continuing the inaugural season’s storyline: “But no, there is pressure, but I don’t really feel or respond to pressure that way. I get pressure [from] myself and beyond that it doesn’t exist so much for me and pressure tends to more revolve around, am I discharging my duty correctly for me?”

11 Years Later, ‘True Detective’ Is Ready To Go Back to Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for Lost Glory

Eleven years since True Detective first dropped that eerie magic on us, HBO might just be ready to call the OGs back. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (the gritty dream team who turned bayou brooding into high art) are reportedly being eyed for a return.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective (2014)
The first season of True Detective remains one of my all-time favourite television experiences. Goyer, who wrote the scripts for all three movies in the original Blade trilogy and directed 2004's Blade: Trinity, was asked if he would have any interest in writing the MCU reboot during an interview with Screen Rant.

“I would. I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.”

Though the reboot was removed from Marvel Studios' slate late last year, we had heard that the movie was...

Blade trilogy writer David S. Goyer’s advice to Marvel: “Give me a call.”
Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998)
The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’re coming up on the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Now, we don’t know if we’re going to get a Blade reboot at all – which is baffling to David S. Goyer, who wrote the trilogy of Blade films that were released between 1998 and 2004 and also created the short-lived Blade TV series that ran for 13 episodes in 2006. His advice to Marvel Studios: “Give me a call.”

Ben Foster Has a Macabre Obsession in New 'Sharp Corner' Sneak Peek [Exclusive]
Image
Ben Foster is a man with mangling and mutilation on his mind in a new Collider-exclusive clip of the new thriller Sharp Corner. Cobie Smulders also stars in this adaptation of a Russell Wangersky short story, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall. The film, which was shot in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, is set to be released later this year.

In the clip, Foster (Hell or High Water) plays Josh McCall, a man who lives near the sharp corner of the title. It's spelled doom for a number of motorists, and as the clip demonstrates, that hasn't been good for Josh's mental health. He and his wife, Rachel, have some dinner guests over, but Josh can't stop himself from talking about Kyle, a young man who recently perished on the corner. He describes, in gruesome detail, how the car's passenger survived, but the driver was...

Blade reboot was going to be set in the 1920s and feature Flying Lotus music

Now, we don’t know if we’re going to get a Blade reboot at all – but we have received confirmation that, at some point in the development process, the movie was going to be set in the 1920s and the plan was for recording artist Flying Lotus, who recently made his feature directorial debut with the sci-fi horror film Ash, to provide some music for it.

Blade Now Said To Be On "Indefinite Hold" As Flying Lotus Reveals He Was Set To Write Music For The Reboot
Image
Though Blade was removed from Marvel Studios' slate late last year, we had heard that the movie was simply delayed and would eventually move forward. Unfortunately, this no longer seems to be the case.

Despite recent reports that the MCU reboot was still on track to commence production in the UK at some point later this year, insider Daniel Richtman claims to have confirmed that Blade has now been put "on indefinite hold."

Backing up this claim is recording artist/DJ Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, who has taken to X to reveal that he had signed on to write the music for the project before things fell through - and he does not sound optimistic about the film getting back on track.

I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new Blade movie before it fell thru.

Rumor Suggests Blade Film is Scrapped
Image
Many Marvel fans have been wondering what happened to the upcoming “Blade” film. Originally announced six years ago and set to release in October 2024, the film has reportedly been paused or cancelled.

A new rumor has surfaced indicating that the film has been nixed.

Here is the thread.

I heard some Blade news I trust. File under rumor for now if you want/take it with a grain of salt. I’m ok with that.

— yronlyhope.bsky.social (@YrOnlyHope) March 28, 2025

Mahershala Ali is still set to play the character in the MCU, but it is unclear when or how the character will debut. According to this rumor he could appear in “Midnight Suns” or “Avengers Secret Wars.”

“Blade” has been plagued with previous rumors and staff changes.

There have been different directors associated with the film like Yaan Demange and Bassam Tariqu, but both left the project.

“Blade” hasn’t fared well with writers either.

Blade MCU Reboot Now Rumored To Be On "Indefinite Hold"
Image
Though Blade was removed from Marvel Studios' slate late last year, we had heard that the movie was simply delayed and would eventually move forward. Now, we have a not-so-positive update.

Despite recent reports that the MCU reboot was still on track to commence production in the UK at some point later this year, scooper Mttsh believes that Blade has is now "on indefinite hold."

Last we heard, the latest draft by Eric Pearson - who is the sixth writer to have been assigned to the project after Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo and Nic Pizzolatto - had "finally satisfied everyone involved," but clearly this isn't the case.

Apparently, the real reason Blade was pushed back again is because Marvel is prioritizing Multiversal stories in the build-up to Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. So, it may not be a case of the studio struggling to "get Blade right,...

Matthew McConaughey spent years in Hollywood before hitting his stride in his mid-40s. In 2014, Dallas Buyers Club earned the Texan actor an Academy Award for Best Actor, marking an end to his Dazed and Confused days.

McConaughey also added The Wolf of Wall Street and Interstellar to his catalog around the same time, though it was True Detective Season 1 that became a cultural phenomenon for decades to come. That role enunciated a late-career boost, its warm reception inducing a turning point. After a six-year break from acting, McConaughey resurfaces with The Rivals of Amziah King due later this year, though it’s his affection for the HBO crime anthology that has delighted the True Detective fandom.

While speaking to Variety about the crime series, the Dazed and Confused star was asked whether he would be ‘alright’ with sharing his...

Rumor: Spider-man 4 Will Serve As A "Direct Sequel" To Avengers: Doomsday
Image
There have been numerous theories and rumors relating to Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' fourth solo Spider-Man movie, and speculation really kicked up a few notches when some pretty wild reports about which characters could be involved in the story started doing the rounds a couple of months back.

Now, a new rumor may give us a better idea of what to expect.

According to Daniel Richtman, Spider-Man 4 is basically being developed as "a direct sequel" to Avengers: Doomsday that will bridge the gap between the 2026 film and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.

We have heard that Tom Holland's wall-crawler is going to have a major role in Doomsday, so Spider-Man 4 serving as a follow-up (to at least some extent) would make sense.

Though Spidey didn't feature in the recent MCU concept art that found its way online, the images did lead to some intriguing theories relating to...

What is Saturday Night Live host Shane Gillis' net worth in 2025?
Image
Shane Gillis returns to host Saturday Night Live on March 1, the second time the comedian has had the honor. The shared history between Gillis and SNL is well-documented, but the controversy hasn't exactly hurt Gillis' net worth.

Gillis was steadily building a following through his stand-up career and podcast appearances before Saturday Night Live cast him ahead of season 45. But the backlash from Gillis' derogatory comments on comedy podcasts put pressure on NBC to fire him, even if Lorne Michaels didn't agree.

Since then, Gillis has only become more famous and more successful. As a result, his net worth stands at an estimated $8 million in 2025 (via CelebrityNetWorth).

The Saturday Night Live scandal only raised Gillis' profile, and he responded by stringing together a series of notable podcast appearances and comedy tours. Perhaps no move was bigger than appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast and directly addressing the fallout from his SNL firing.

Al Pacino Joining Gus Van Sant Hostage Thriller ‘Dead Man’s Wire’
Image

The screenplay was written by Austin Kolodney. He joins previously announced Bill Skarsgard, Dacre Montgomery, Myha’la, Cary Elwes and Colman Domingo — all of whom Deadline first told you about.

Here’s the blurb for Dead Man’s Wire: The morning of February 8, 1977, Anthony G. “Tony” Kiritsis, 44, entered the office of Richard O. Hall, president of the Meridian Mortgage Company, and took him hostage with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun wired with a “dead man’s wire” from the trigger to Tony’s own neck. This is the true story of the stand-off that took the world by storm as Tony demanded $5 million, no charges or prosecution, and a personal apology from the Halls for cheating him out of what he was “owed.”

True Detective season 5 moves the setting to Jamaica Bay, aims for a 2027 premiere
Issa López
Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country), is coming back to do another season of the show – and HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi has just revealed the setting for True Detective season 5 to Deadline!

Orsi told Deadline that season 5 is “set in New York, in Jamaica Bay. Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.” In case you’re not familiar with Jamaica Bay, it’s “an estuary on the southern portion of the western tip of Long Island, in the U.S. state of New York. The estuary is partially man-made, and partially natural.”

Casting on the new season is already...

True Detective season 5 will have new characters, new location, same weird vibe
Image
Over the course of its four seasons, True Detective has gone to the swamps of Louisiana, the streets of Los Angeles, the Ozark mountains and the remote reaches of Ennis, Alaska, where it's dark for several months straight. The upcoming fifth season will again introduce a whole new set of characters in a whole new location: Jamaica Bay, New York, part of Long Island.

Long Island is part of the New York City metropolitan area but not part of the city itself. Still, it's significantly more urban than Ennis, Alaksa, where Jodie Foster and Kali Reis hunted for clues in the snow in season 4. What stars will HBO draft for the next season? Who knows?

The first three seasons of True Detective were written and overseen by Nic Pizzolatto. For the fourth season, showrunning duties were handed over to Issa López, who actually came to HBO with the idea for...

Matthew McConaughey has cast his fictionalized mother for his upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series with Woody Harrelson. Holland Taylor, best known for playing matriarch Evelyn Harper in Two and a Half Men, has boarded the series as Ma Mac.

Per Deadline, Taylor will appear as a series regular opposite McConaughey and Harrelson in the 10-episode half-hour comedy series. Although McConaughey previously revealed the show's title as Brother from Another Mother in April 2023, Deadline is claiming in its casting report that the series remains untitled at this time. What is known, however, is that the show will star Harrelson and McConaughey as heightened versions of themselves in a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around their strange and beautiful sibling-like bond. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Come Together for a Texas-Sized ‘True Detective’ Reunion | Video

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reunited for a “True Detective”-themed ad written and directed by the show’s creator Nic Pizzolatto. True To Texas encourages the Texan legislature to increase film and TV production in the state through new incentives.

“You ever wonder if this industry of ours is just chasing its own tail?” Harrelson asks at the beginning of the clip. McConaughey then responds with a direct callback to his “True Detective” character Rust Cohle from the first season of the HBO series.

“Hollywood is a flat circle Woody. Round and round like a record with the sound off,” the actor says. “This industry is like somebody’s memory of an industry. The memory is fading. I am talking about a whole new hub for film and television. A renaissance. A rebirth.”

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Reprise Their True Detective Roles in Push for Texas Film Incentives
Image
Time is a flat circle, so it makes sense that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would return to their True Detective roles at some point.

The two actors have teamed up for an ad calling on Texas lawmakers to create new incentives to bring more film and TV production to the Lone Star State. In the ad, which is co-written and directed by True Detective series creator Nic Pizzolatto, McConaughey and Harrelson slip right back into their True Detective personas as investigators Rust Cohle and Marty Hart — although, technically, they’re playing themselves.

Matthew McConaughey at an event for Mud - Sur les rives du Mississippi (2012)
Ahead of the Super Bowl, the True to Texas initiative has released a headline-grabbing commercial of their own this week, which notably features Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprising their roles from the first season of “True Detective” to help spread the True to Texas mission statement: bringing film and television productions back to Texas.

Renée Zellweger, who of course co-starred alongside McConaughey in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, also appears in the commercial, alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid. The star-studded ad runs 4-minutes long, and it’s interesting to note that it was directed by “True Detective” series creator/Season 1 director Nic Pizzolatto.

The official video description reads, “Why should Texas movies be made anywhere but Texas? Filming in Texas isn’t just about showcasing our stunning landscapes—it’s about creating jobs, boosting local economies, and building a thriving industry right here at home.

This 11-Year-Old Show On Max Is One Of The Best Mystery Series Of All Time & HBO Has Struggled To Repeat It Ever Since
Image
It’s been 11 years since True Detective season 1 premiered on HBO, and the influential Max-streaming series remains one of the best TV outings of all time. HBO has long gained a reputation for being the home of prestige drama TV, with ‘90s-’00s hits like The Sopranos, Band of Brothers, and The Wire paving the way for 2010s phenomenons like Game of Thrones, Succession, Chernobyl, and, of course, True Detective. The success of HBO’s best TV shows has inspired attempts to recreate their magic with similar concepts or franchise expansions, with some proving more difficult to replicate than others.

True Detective season 1 is one such show that HBO has tried to capitalize on the popularity of since 2014, but has struggled to find that lightning in a bottle again. Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective season 1 is led by Matthew McConaughey as Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Marty Hart,...
