Netflix snatches up new show with Yellowstone and True Detective connections
Image
There's no doubt that True Detective and Yellowstone are two of the most popular television shows in recent memory. Remember way back when the True Detective season 1 finale broke HBO Go? The show was that serious for all of us fans, and it's still a fan-favorite. The same can be said about the game-changing Yellowstone, which has launched an entired universe of shows.

If you're a fan of both shows as most people probably are, Netflix is about to give you the gift of a lifetime. No, True Detective and Yellowstone aren't being added to Netflix (though we can certainly dream). But the streaming service has officially won the bidding...

Matthew McConaughey to reunite with True Detective creator for new Netflix series
Image
Netflix has acquired the rights to Nic Pizzolatto’s new series and the project will reunite Pizzolatto with Matthew McConaughey.

The first season of True Detective remains potentially its best. Although season 4, subtitled Night Country, gives it a run for its money, that first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, was a brutal, enticing run of TV.

True Detective is still going strong with more news on its next series announced just days ago, but the show’s creator Nic Pizzolatto is looking ahead. After departing the series as a showrunner after season 3 – although still remaining involved as an executive producer – Pizzolatto is now planning a new, hopefully just...

Matthew McConaughey & Cole Hauser Headline Football Drama In Works At Netflix From Nic Pizzolatto & Skydance Sports
Image
In a competitive situation, Netflix has landed an untitled drama project starring and executive produced by Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser that comes from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto and Skydance Sports, now part of Paramount, Deadline has confirmed.

Details are sketchy but the project is believed to be set in the world of football and it originated as a show about two brothers, played by McConaughey and Hauser, I hear.

The two actors have been friends for two decades (they starred together in the 1993 Dazed and Confused), and have been kicking around the idea over that time.

This marks the latest collaboration between McConaughey and Pizzolatto. The Oscar winner starred opposite Woody Harrelson in the first season of True Detective on HBO. McConaughey and Pizzolatto re-teamed for the straight-to-series FX drama Redeemer, which ultimately didn’t move forward, and recently reunited for a...

Matthew McConaughey, Cole Hauser to Star in Nic Pizzolatto Netflix Series
Image
Netflix has won out in a bidding war for a new series starring Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser that hails from creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Variety has confirmed that the project is currently in development at Netflix, though final deals for the two leads are still being ironed out. Plot details are scarce, aside from the fact that McConaughey and Hauser would play brothers. Skydance Sports will produce.

Netflix declined to comment.

The series marks another reunion for McConaughey and Pizzolatto, following their highly successful collaboration on the first season of “True Detective” at HBO. The pair were also meant to re-team on the FX project “Redeemer,” though that series ultimately did not move forward. Most recently, it was reported that McConaughey would star in a movie based on Mickey Spillane’s and Max Allan Collins’ “Mike Hammer” books with a script by Pizzolatto.

It is also the latest “True Detective” reunion in TV for McConaughey,...

Netflix Lands Matthew McConaughey, Cole Hauser, Nic Pizzolatto Show in Bidding War (Exclusive)
Image
As August comes to a close, Hollywood has been hit by some heat: A bidding war over a red-hot television project that included several major streamers — and with Netflix coming out on top.

The mysterious and as-yet-untitled project brings together three intriguing names: True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, his True Detective season one co-lead Matthew McConaughey and Yellowstone fan favorite Cole Hauser. Skydance Sports is the company behind the project.

Sources say Amazon, Apple and Netflix were on the court for this one, with Netflix winning. The project is considered in development with deals with McConaughey and Hauser to star are being finalized.

Notably absent from the mix was HBO, which has had a rocky relationship with Pizzolatto, who last year openly dissed the network’s fourth season of the anthology crime drama he created. McConaughey, meanwhile, was previously in talks to potentially star in a Yellowstone spinoff series. Creator...

Nic Cage Set to Join Season 5 of HBO's True Detective
Image
Fan-favorite actor Nicolas Cage could be heading to HBO. The actor is in talks to lead the upcoming fifth season of the crime anthology series True Detective.

According to Deadline, Cage is in talks for the lead role of Henry Logan, a New York detective on the case at the center of the new season, and has been circling the part for some time, meaning that it is unclear at this time whether the deal will actually close. However, Jodie Foster, who headlined the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, also took a long time to close her deal, so there is a precedent.

From the start, True Detective has...

True Detective Season 5 Could Have Nicolas Cage As Its Lead
Image
Each season of True Detective is defined by its central star(s). Season 1 gave us the iconic pairing of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson; Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams took the lead in Season 2; Season 3 hinged on Mahershala Ali; and Season 4, aka Night Country, gave us the pairing of Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. Now, the upcoming fifth season of True Detective may have just found its new lead – and it’s an instant no-brainer.

According to Deadline, internet favourite – and all-out Hollywood legend – Nicolas Cage is in talks to lead Season 5 of HBO’s brooding crime anthology. Details on the series are being kept firmly under wraps, but given the events of previous seasons,...

Nicolas Cage in talks for True Detective season 5

True Detective season 5 is starting to take shape as Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the show. More below.

Season 4 was perhaps the best season of True Detective yet, but news of season 5 have been sparse ever since the anthology show was renewed in February 2024.

Thankfully, it seems that the new season is steadily moving forward. Variety reports that Nicolas Cage is close to signing a deal to star in season 5. Not much else is known about the new run – HBO appears to be keen on keeping plans close to its chest to protect the season’s mysteries.

Nicolas Cage in Talks for ‘True Detective’ Season 5 — Getting Him Closer to a TV Pivot
Image
Between Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Jodie Foster, Colin Farrell, Mahershala Ali, and Rachel McAdams, “True Detective” has a knack for getting big movie stars onto the small screen, and the latest could be someone who has only recently dipped his toes into television: Nicolas Cage. In fact, the actor hinted way back in 2023 that he may only have a few movies left in him and would’ve wanted to “have left on a high note” before turning to TV.

Cage is in talks to star in the fifth season of “True Detective” for HBO, a source told IndieWire. This season is said to be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City, and showrunner and writer Issa Lopez, who took over for creator Nic Pizzolatto for the fourth season, “Night Country,” is back. Any other plot details are still under wraps.

HBO had no comment.

HBO's True Detectiveseason 5 looks to have found its next acclaimed star in the form of Nicolas Cage. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the series has chronicled the experiences of a new detective each season as their investigations into a series of violent crimes also impact their personal lives.

Helmed by Pizzolatto for the first three seasons before Issa López took over with season 4, True Detective started as one of the most acclaimed HBO shows ever, being hailed for its performances, atmosphere and direction. Mahershala Ali Will Not Voice Blade In Marvel Zombies As Invincible Star Takes Over The Role
Image
Marvel Animation's upcoming What If...? spin-off, Marvel Zombies, will introduce a very unique Multiversal Variant in Blade Knight. The Daywalker has somehow inherited the Moon Knight mantle from Marc Spector, and the expectation had been that Mahershala Ali would voice the character.

Well, ComicBook.com has confirmed that Todd Williams (The Chicago Code) will play Blade Knight. Interestingly, he previously replaced Ali as the voice of Titan in Prime Video's animated Invincible TV series.

While Ali had a brief voice cameo in 2021's Eternals, the Daywalker's solo movie remains stuck in limbo after being announced at Comic-Con over six years ago. We'd imagine the intention was for us to have already met the Oscar-winner's Blade by the time Marvel Zombies aired, though it's no longer clear whether Ali was ever set to reprise the role in this series.

If the Blade movie fails to materialise, then Ali's MCU work could boil down to Eternals' confusing,...

'Top Gun 3's Fate Revealed as New Paramount Owners Make Massive Changes to the Studio
Image
When Skydance officially became the powers-that-be at Paramount last Thursday, the new leadership absolutely wasted zero time in sending a clear message to Hollywood: the scaled-back Paramount of recent years is gone. Hours after the merger closed, co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg made their first big move, snapping up the hot Timothée Chalamet–James Mangold package High Side in a pretty fierce bidding war, and that aggressive power play has set the tone for this new Paramount 2.0, which is determined to massively expand its theatrical slate as well as attempt to become the premium streaming brand in the world.

For Top Gun fans, that’s damn fine news. Tom Cruise’s return to the cockpit has been up in the air (get it?) since Top Gun: Maverick smashed box office records in 2022, becoming Paramount’s highest-grossing film of all time with $1.49 billion worldwide, and Cruise's highest-grossing movie ever.

Jake Gyllenhaal's The Guilty Is A Remake Of A Much Better Movie Streaming For Free
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If a movie is going to be mostly close-up reactions of its lead actor, then the actor needs to have an expressive face. Jake Gyllenhaal, who more than fits the bill, faced this challenge in the 2021 thriller "The Guilty," directed by Antoine Fuqua (who used unorthodox filming methods to shoot the movie during the pandemic) and scripted by "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto.

In "The Guilty," Gyllenhaal plays Joe Baylor, a 911 dispatcher in Los Angeles. The film takes place almost entirely during one of his shifts. Joe (who has a haunted past) is pretty dispassionate about his job... at first. Then a woman named Emily (Riley Keough) calls him, claiming that she's being kidnapped. Trying to help her from a distance, Joe discovers the culprit is likely her abusive ex-husband Henry (Peter Sarsgaard), but gradually realizes his assumptions about the...

'Yellowstone' Star Says "Hollywood Turned" on Him Over a Contract Stipulation
Image
Neal McDonough, seen in Band of Brothers, Minority Report, and Western series such as Yellowstone and Tulsa King, has addressed his recent distancing from the industry. Despite some prominent roles in big productions from Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg, McDonough's career has taken a hit; today, he's mostly featured in smaller projects, but it isn't for lack of trying. The actor says that due to one of his contractual requests, "Hollywood turned on him." The specific request? If the script includes a moment of intimacy, he refuses to participate with anyone who isn't his wife.

McDonough was recently invited to Nothing Left Unsaid, the podcast hosted by Troy and Tim Green whose previous guests include industry figures like Nic Pizzolatto. McDonough talked about his career, his faith, and getting "blackballed" over the contraction stipulation mentioned above, saying, "It was very difficult, that's for sure, to go through what I went through.

12 Comedic Actors With A Dramatic Role That Didn't Turn Out Very Well
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Every comedian, at one point or another, tries their hand at drama. As much as everyone enjoys a good laugh, no one wants to be typecast in the same kinds of roles throughout their career. Sometimes, it works brilliantly. Take Robin Williams, for example -- he used his incredible gift for comedy to become a hugely popular star on both the big and small screens. Then he seamlessly transitioned to drama, appearing in films like "Good Morning, Vietnam," "Dead Poets Society," "Awakenings," and "The Fisher King," and later went above and beyond behind the scenes to win a well-deserved Oscar for "Good Will Hunting." While audiences always recognized him for his energetic stand-up routines and comedic performances in blockbusters like "Mrs. Doubtfire" and Disney's animated "Aladdin," he still managed to carve out a solid niche as a bankable dramatic star.

True Detective Creator’s New Movie Image Reveals Reunion With Star Of His Most Divisive Season
Image
The first image for True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto's latest film has just been released, revealing that the film will see the director reunite with the star of his most divisive season. True Detective is one of the most beloved TV shows of all time, and after a notoriously troubled post-production process, Pizzolatto's next project is finally nearing its release.

Nic Pizzolatto is the creator of HBO's True Detective, with him being behind the show's first three seasons and acting as an executive producer on the fourth. The filmmaker has been incredibly successful in the realm of TV and has written several features, such as 2016's The Magnificent Seven and 2021's The Guilty. However, Pizzolatto is now set to make his feature directorial debut.

Marvel Locks New Plan for Blade After Years of Turbulence
Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998)
Marvel Studios says it has settled on a path forward for Blade after what Kevin Feige calls “four different scripts and too many false starts.” The producer told fans the long-gestating reboot will now unfold in the present day, lean toward an R rating and keep Mahershala Ali in the title role he accepted six years ago.

Studio insiders put the working budget near $80 million—well below recent MCU tent-poles—in line with a corporate push to scale back costly expansions. Feige acknowledged that the project “was a casualty of quantity over quality,” adding that narrowing the scope has clarified its tone as a gritty vampire thriller rather than a sprawling crossover.

The road has been rocky. Original director Bassam Tariq exited weeks before cameras were to roll in 2022, citing creative differences. Successor Yann Demange departed amicably last summer after the film cycled through writers Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto...

Kevin Feige confirms Mahershala Ali is still attached to the MCU Blade reboot, which will be set in modern day
Wesley Snipes in Blade (1998)
The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’ve reached the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Things have been looking dire, with screenwriters and directors coming and going – but while talking to a group of journalists at Marvel Studios last Friday, studio president Kevin Feige confirmed that Ali is still attached to star in an MCU Blade movie, which may have finally found its story and setting.

Last year, we heard a rumor that Mahershala Ali is getting “increasingly frustrated...

Kevin Feige Explains Why Marvel is Struggling with Blade Script: “It Had to Be Unique”
Image
Marvel Studios is still working on its long-delayed Blade movie, but fans might need to wait a little longer. In a new interview with TheWrap and other reporters, Marvel boss Kevin Feige shared why the project has been so slow.

According to him, the studio rushed to make too many shows and movies at once, and Blade ended up being one of the projects that suffered because of it.

Feige said that Mahershala Ali is still set to play the famous vampire hunter. However, Marvel decided to stop and rethink the movie after they realized the script wasn’t good enough. “We didn’t feel confident,” Feige explained, adding that the studio had already gone through four different versions of the story.

He made it clear they didn’t want to make a basic action movie with Blade. “We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on...

Kevin Feige Admits ‘Blade’ Struggled from Marvel’s Quantity Focus, Shares Hopeful Update for Fans
Image
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has shared a new update about the long-delayed Blade movie. Speaking to TheWrap and other reporters, Feige explained that the film’s struggles were caused by Marvel’s focus on making too many projects too quickly.

He admitted that Blade became a victim of what he called the company’s “quantity over quality” phase.

Mahershala Ali is still set to play Blade, the half-human vampire hunter. But according to Feige, Marvel paused the project after they realized the script just wasn’t good enough. “We didn’t feel confident,” Feige said, explaining that they have already worked through four versions of the script.

He added, “We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique and it fell right into the time when we started pulling back and saying ‘only accept...

Kevin Feige Sets The Record Straight On Blade Issues; Reveals New Writer And When The Story Is Now Set
Image
It's pretty much six years to the day that Marvel Studios ended its Hall H panel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con by announcing that Mahershala Ali would lead a new Blade movie.

Since then, the movie has been through multiple creative teams, lost actors, and even become the butt of memorable gag from returning Daywalker Wesley Snipes in Deadpool & Wolverine. So, what's been the main obstacle?

"The obstacle was Ryan Coogler called and said, 'We’d love some costumes for Sinners,'" Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige joked during a recent sit-down with the Hollywood trades, referring to recent reports that Sinners made use of Ruth E. Carter's costumes created for Blade. "And we said, 'Take them, man.' He’s our good friend, take our costumes. We’ll hold off on the movie."

Reiterating that Coogler remains hard at work on Black Panther 3 and isn't who the...

Kevin Feige Says ‘Blade’ Was a Casualty of Marvel’s ‘Quantity Over Quality’ Push, Had 4 Different Scripts
Image
Marvel Studios Kevin Feige gave an update on where the company currently stands with “Blade,” telling TheWrap alongside a group of reporters on Friday the studio “didn’t feel confident” in the script, highlighting that there have been four versions of the project as it became a casualty of a push for quantity over quality.

Mahershala Ali is still attached to star as the half-human vampire hunter, Feige confirmed, while openly admitting that the company’s recent struggles stem from prioritizing quantity over quality, and “Blade” was a consequence of that Disney-mandated expansion to fill up Disney+.

“We had spent 12 years working on the ‘Infinity Saga’ saying that’s never going to happen to us. And we always had more characters that people were asking about than we could possibly make because we weren’t going to make a movie a month, that’s crazy” Feige said. “Suddenly there’s...

Every True Detective Season, Ranked From Worst to Best
Image
Ever since its premiere in 2018, True Detective has become one of the best anthology series on TV. With new suspense, themes, and atmosphere in each season, the show has unraveled four different mysteries, some of which are known for their noir style and great performances, while some miss the mark.

However, despite that, each season delivered its best with its stellar cast, story, acting, and great execution. Still, there has been a progression with every season that affects the audience’s reception and their status as the best, making some emerge as the best, while others remain disappointing.

4. True Detective: Night Country (Season 4)

Created by Nic Pizzolatto and starring Jodie Foster, Season 4, titled Night Country, takes the audience to the eternal night of rural Alaska. And with a stellar cast including Foster alongside Kali Reis, this season had all the makings of a standout addition to the anthology series. However,...

True Detective: What Does 'Time Is A Flat Circle' Mean?
Image
Few shows, if any, ever reach the level of "True Detective" season 1. As trite as it's become to cite this season of television as one of the finest ever made, it doesn't change the fact that writer Nic Pizzolatto, director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson created something truly special with those eight episodes of television. Leaving aside the incredible depth contained in the show's writing, its historical and literary influences, and the standout performances, one of season 1's most enduring contributions to pop culture remains the phrase "time is a flat circle." But what does this actually mean?

At this point, the phrase has been memed to the point it has lost most of its meaning. You'll likely see some version of the words used any time some cultural event occurs that's vaguely reminiscent of a past event. But there was much more meaning behind...

'Leave Me Out of It': Mahershala Ali's Blade Comments Make Marvel's Horror Movie Sound Dead
Image
Marvel Studios' Blade reboot has just been dealt another devastating blow. Mahershala Ali, who is set to star in the long-gestating superhero blockbuster as the titular hero, recently skirted around a question involving the Marvel Cinematic Universe while promoting his new movie, Jurassic World Rebirth.

During a recent appearance on Vogue's Off the Cut podcast (via ComicBook) with his Rebirth co-stars Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson, the cast was asked how many Marvel movies they had appeared in, prompting Ali to state, "Leave me out of it. That's a Scarlett question." Ali tossing the question away from him as quickly as possible implies that Marvel is still no closer to getting Blade into production, roughly six years after the project was first announced. For what it's worth, even with Blade still in development hell, Ali's answer to the question would technically be one, as he made an uncredited voice cameo...

Blade: Mahershala Ali Is Still Ready And Willing To Play The Daywalker; "Call Marvel"
Image
Hard as it may be to believe, it's been over six years since Marvel Studios announced that Mahershala Ali was set to star as the titular vampire slayer in a new MCU Blade movie.

Numerous delays and setbacks followed, and we got the disappointing news that the project had been removed from Marvel's slate late last year. Though a report that the movie was on indefinite hold followed, we were led to believe that Blade had simply delayed (again) and would eventually move forward.

Ali was asked about the status of the film while being interviewed on the red carpet of last night's Jurassic World Rebirth premiere, and it sounds like he is still more than willing to suit-up as the Daywlker - but the ball is very much in the studio's court.

"Call Marvel," the actor said to Variety. "I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready."

Ali...

Blade Legend Asked Marvel to Come Back, Was Told, ‘We’re Good, Thanks’
Image
The Blade reboot, starring Mahershala Ali as the titular vampire-killer, seems to be dead in the water. Now, original Blade writer David Goyer wants the world to know he tried to help it survive.

Goyer made the revelation in an interview with Variety, saying that he offered to assist the studio with the project months ago after some prodding from friends. "I wasn't even really thinking about it," he said. "But then I had my agent call Marvel and say, 'Do you guys need any help?' And they said, 'We love you, but we think we've cracked it now, and we’re in a good place.' And then the latest thing happened."

Goyer would have been an ideal person to write the Blade reboot script since he was involved with The Dark Knight trilogy. Despite the rejection, the filmmaker says he would love to work on the Blade reboot if he was asked.
