Fred & Adele Astaire Story & WWII Thriller ‘The Zero Hour’ In The Works For Altitude — Cannes
Asif Kapadia
Exclusive: Multi-faceted UK outfit Altitude, which is on the Croisette this year with Asif Kapadia’s anticipated documentary Diego Maradona, is in development on a movie about the lives and careers of dance siblings Fred and Adele Astaire, and World War II thriller The Zero Hour about one man’s personal quest to track down Nazi Rudolf Hoss.

Altitude spans international sales, UK distribution and production. The latest prospect in development for the company is a portrait of iconic American dancer Fred Astaire and his sister Adele. Partnering with producers Ben Holden (The Woman In Black 2) of Lightbulb Pictures and Josh Hyams (The Trip To Spain), Altitude have set writers Glenn Patterson and Colin Carberry (Good Vibrations) to write The Astaires, the true story of how the twenty-something siblings overcame huge challenges to become the world’s most famous dancers during their time in London and New York.

Northern Ireland unveils $70m fund
Northern Ireland is hoping to tempt more Game of Thrones-style high-end TV and film productions to the country as part of a new four-year £43m ($71.5m) plan.

Northern Ireland Screen, the region’s funding body, has launched Opening Doors, a scheme running through to 2018 that will see it attempt to develop Northern Ireland into the strongest screen industry outside of London.

The new fund will dramatically increase from the £27.3m ($45.5m) invested between 2010 and 2014 to £42.8m ($71.5m) over the next four years.

CEO Richard Williams said that the previous scheme – Driving Global Growth – has provided a £121m ($200m) return on investment and it hopes the new plan will bring in £250m ($415m).

“The vision is to have the strongest screen industry outside of London within ten years,” he added.

The body also announced Sepia, a brand-new commission from Microsoft’s Xbox Studios that will film in Northern Ireland in mid-May. The TV movie...

2014 BAFTA Award Winners Led by '12 Years a Slave' and 'Gravity'
Last night the 2014 BAFTA Awards took place, hosted by Stephen Fry from London's Royal Opera House and it was 12 Years a Slave taking Best Film and Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor while Gravity was honored for Outstanding British Film and Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. Interestingly enough, 12 Years a Slave only won the two awards while Gravity was the night's biggest winner taking home an additional four awards in technical categories, including Score (Steven Price) and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). It's interesting to see a list of winners where Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated for a single award considering its two main characters played by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto are, more or less, considered locks to win Best Actor and Supporting Actor. As for the BAFTA Awards, it was Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) taking Best Supporting Actor and while Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) added another Best Actress award to...

12 Years A Slave Named Best Film at BAFTA Awards; Gravity Wins Best Director and Best British Film
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts handed out its awards this evening, and while the BAFTAs have increasingly become a solid bellwether of how the Oscars will vote, tonight’s tallies do little to settle the virtual tie between Gravity and 12 Years a Slave. Gravity won the most awards of the night with six, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron and Best British Film, but 12 Years a Slave took the top honors as Best Film as well as Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor. American Hustle also had a fairly strong showing with three awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence over 12 Years a Slave’s Lupita Nyong’O—one of this year’s toughest categories. Hit the jump to check out the full list of winners, and to catch up on our awards coverage be sure to take a look at our running Oscar Beat column. Best...

"Gravity" Dominates BAFTA Nominations
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.

The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!

The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Here's the complete list of BAFTA nominations:

BAFTA And The American Society Of Cinematographers Announce Their Nominations
Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.

First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.

However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

2014 BAFTA Award Nominations Led by 'Gravity' with 11
Last night the 2014 BAFTA Award nominations were announced and Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity led the way with 11 nominations, followed closely by 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle with ten and Captain Phillips with nine. This is no real surprise as I currently have Gravity taking nine nominations at the Oscars where it remains a player alongside American Hustle and, you guessed it, my Best Picture front-runner 12 Years a Slave. There's a lot of talk about the fact Dallas Buyers Club wasn't nominated, but it hasn't been released in the UK yet making it ineligible for this year's awards. Per BAFTA rules: "Films must be released theatrically in the UK, within the Academy awards year: 1 January to 31 December 2013. Films that open between 1 January and 14 February 2014 inclusive may be 'qualified' by Distributors by being screened to Academy Film Voting Members by 19 December 2013." I have no idea if Dallas Buyers was screened, but...

British Academy Goes Hollywood (Once Again): BAFTA Nominees 2014 Including Several Surprises (Adams In!)
BAFTA Awards 2014: ‘American Hustle,’ ‘Gravity,’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ tops (photo: BAFTA 2014 nominees Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence in ‘American Hustle’) Nominations for the 2014 BAFTA Awards were announced a little while ago. As usual, British Academy of Film and Television Arts have placed their focus on Big English-Language Productions — i.e., Hollywood and Anglo-Hollywood fare. (I mean, Gravity, Rush, and Saving Mr. Banks are considered "British" productions here.) Small British films and non-Hollywood productions have been — once again as usual — all but ignored. Bafta nominations: Gravity has genius, but Slave must prevail
Bafta has distributed its nominations fairly between frontrunners Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle and Captain Phillips – but watch out for Philomena

• News: Gravity on top, with Slave and Hustle just behind

• Full list of nominees

The announcement of the Bafta nominations brings into focus the varying merits of two very different kinds of movies: Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, leading the list with 11 nominations, and Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave, just behind with 10.

The astronaut-thriller Gravity with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney combines state-of-the-art digital effects (a poster carries an endorsement from no less a person than Buzz Aldrin) with the old-fashioned values of escapist entertainment and spectacle. Saucer-eyed cinemagoers (including this reviewer) have staggered out of the IMAX theatre feeling that they really have just had a season in space.

12 Years A Slave is a powerful, harrowing, serious picture driven by direction and acting, and...

The nominations didn’t offer any huge surprises, but there are some notable developments.

Dallas Buyers Club was shut out of the BAFTA nominations, which might have been expected for Matthew McConaughey for lead actor and Jared Leto for supporting. Some of the best films of the 2012/2013 calender year from Richard Linklater, Harmony Korine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Bujalski, Jeff Nichols, David Gordon Green, Shane Carruth and Joshua Oppenheimer are among the headliner names for the 2013 edition of the South by Southwest Film Festival. With a little over 100 plus film line-up (a whopping 2000+ titles were submitted), almost 70 are world premieres: there is the highly anticipated sophomore film (that has been on our radar since it first went into production) with M. Blash’s (The Wait), Joe Swanberg who makes SXSW his second home will premiere Drinking Buddies, veteran indie filmmaker John Sayles saddles in with Go For Sisters, and rounding out the Narrative Spotlight section we’ve got The Bounceback from Bryan Poyser, Loves Her Gun from Geoff Marslett along with titles we thought might break into Park City, but found an Austin home instead with Jacob Vaughan’s Milo and...

BBC Films Announces New Projects Including Simon Curtis' The Golden Lady
After the positive reception in Cannes for Rufus Norris' acclaimed Broken which opened Critics Week, BBC Films has unveiled their new slate, reaffirming their commitment to nurturing relationships with filmmakers and developing new talent.

BBC Films is thrilled to be welcoming back former collaborators on a number of exciting projects this year. Following An Education and most recently Dustin Hoffman's Quartet, BBC Films will be working again with Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey of Wildgaze on two projects. Based on Colm Toibin's best-selling novel, Brooklyn will star Rooney Mara and has been adapted by Academy Award nominated Nick Hornby. Hornby's novel, A Long Way Down, has been adapted by Jack Thorne and will be directed by Pascal Chaumeil (Heartbreaker). It will star Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Imogen Poots, and Emile Hirsch.

Michael Fassbender, Steve Coogan, and Robert Sheehan Exit ‘Good Vibrations’
If you want to talk about a big blow to a project, here’s a prime example. As Cineuropa (via ThePlaylist) reports, directors Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa have lost three major cast members for their upcoming Good Vibrations. This is something that can normally be dealt with, depending on who the actors are, but when they’re Michael Fassbender, Steve Coogan, and Robert Sheehan… you’ve got problems. (Sheehan isn’t quite as big a name as those other two, but that fact doesn’t make this any easier for the production.) Reasons for their departures haven’t been given, but I would guess that their busy schedules have kept them from staying on.

We told you about Fassbender joining the project back in May, which follows Terri Hooley, who “owned a record shop in England (called Good Vibrations) in the 70′s, and in that time started...

Cannes 2011. Weekend News Roundup
No other time, no other place sees a greater concentration of the world's film journalists than the Cannes Film Festival. If you've got an announcement to make, Cannes is the when and where to make it. Before what looks like a pretty raucous week gets rolling tomorrow, I thought I'd gather notes on a few of the most interesting made so far.

The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Roxborough goes to work on the story that's probably made the biggest noise so far: "The creator of Antichrist and the helmer of Taxi Driver will collaborate on their next project. Danish director Lars von Trier and Oscar-winner Martin Scorsese are teaming up for a remake of The Five Obstructions, von Trier's 2003 documentary deconstructing the filmmaking process…. It's unclear which of Scorcese's films will form the basis of the Five Obstructions remake."

Jason Guerrasio for Filmmaker: "This news got me thinking about another project...

Michael Fassbender, Steve Coogan, and Robert Sheehan to Star in Good Vibrations
Michael Fassbender is becoming ubiquitous so thank goodness he's an incredible actor. Last month, Fassbender signed on to star in Good Vibrations, which is a biopic about Belfast punk rock legend Terri Hooley. Today, ScreenDaily is reporting that Richard Dormer (Five Minutes of Heaven) will play Hooley while Steve Coogan, Bronagh Gallagher (Tamara Drewe) and Robert Sheehan will co-star. You're probably aware of Coogan at this point, but you need to put Sheehan on your radar. He's a strong dramatic presence in the Red Riding Trilogy but does a complete 180 to play the scene-stealing jackass Nathan on the British series Misfits. There was word last month that Fassbender's Hunger co-star Liam Cunningham would also be in the film, but ScreenDaily makes no mention of him. The film also has a strong presence behind the camera as Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa (Cherrybomb, which also starred Sheehan as well...
