When it comes to the BAFTA Award for Best British Short Animation, the National Film and Television School (Nfts) is almost synonymous with success – it’s hard to think of a year when one of their graduation films wasn’t nominated. Over the past decade, filmmakers like Daisy Jacobs, Nina Gantz, and Paloma Baeza have all taken home the award. Hoping to follow in their footsteps in 2025 is recent graduate José Prats, whose film Adiós is a contender this year and stood out to us as one of the highlights of the Nfts’ 2024 graduate showcase. The producers of The Throne have returned their $10,600 prize, citing a desire to help the festival’s growth.

The team behind The Throne, which won Best Film at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Nov 13-29) last week, have returned their $10,600 (€10,000) prize to the festival.

Production company Tiger Pictures and director Lee Joon-ik stated that they were impressed with the festival and they wished to donate their grant to help Black Nights become “a new European hub to create cinematic joy and fun.”

The Throne, which is South Korea’s Oscar submission for 2015, follows an 18th-century Korean ruling family. It also took the Best Music prize during the festival’s award ceremony on Nov 27.

The film’s screenwriter and producer, Cho Chul-hyun—who accepted the awards on behalf of Lee and music director Bang Jun-seok who were both absent—left a handwritten letter on Dec 1 to Festival Director Tiina Lokk explaining what Lee and Tiger Pictures wanted...

Held last month on March 24-29, the Ann Arbor Film Festival handed out awards to a gaggle of experimental films and filmmakers.

The big winner of the fest was Sicilian filmmaker Simone Rapisarda Casanova for his fiction/documentary hybrid film The Creation of Meaning, which won the overall Best of the Festival award. The film tells the story of a WWII survivor who lives as a shepherd in the Tuscan Alps.

The Best Narrative Film award went to Lonnie van Brummelen & Siebren de Haan’s Episode of the Sea, a neo-realist drama focused on the struggles of a tiny inland fishing community in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Best Documentary Film award went to longtime collaborators Bill Brown and Sabine Gruffat for their Speculation Nation, which examines the current housing crisis in Spain.

Birdman was honored with Best Picture at the 87th Annual Academy Awards, which took place tonight at the Dolby Theater in the Hollywood and Highland Center, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. Birdman took home four Oscars tonight in total, winning for Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro Gonz&#225lez I&#241&#225rritu), Best Original Screenplay (Alejandro Gonz&#225lez I&#241&#225rritu, Armando Bo, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicol&#225s Giacobone) and Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). The film also tied for the most wins of the night with The Grand Budapest Hotel, which won for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.

Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.

The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.

Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.

Oscar Week 2015 has arrived. The week kicked off with the filmmakers of the Oscar nominated short films.

Actor Sean Astin hosted the Academy’s “Oscar Celebrates: Shorts” event on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Astin was a perfect choice. His short film Kangaroo Court was nominated for an Oscar back in 1995, and its quite obvious he has a passion for the genre.

He spoke about what it was like when he was nominated in that category and being excited about the possibility of winning (It was actually a tie between 2 shorts that year, and his film was not one of them). Said Astin wryly, “I told myself we probably came in 3rd.”

He was very engaging in Q&A panel and asked the perfect smart and brief questions to keep things moving along.

With the Oscars just around the corner, it’s time to lay down my predictions for all 24 categories. While, as usual, most categories seem like a pretty solid lock, there’s always the possibility of a surprise or two, so let’s get right to it.

The Royal Opera House in London was the place to be on Sunday (February 8) as the 2015 BAFTA Film Awards took over with a host of huge stars.

While there were many deserving hopefuls in each and every category, only one lucky winner got to take home the hardware and thereby claim BAFTA prominence.

The night’s big victories included Eddie Redmayne (Best Actor for “The Theory of Everything”), Julianne Moore (Best Actress for “Still Alice”) and “Boyhood” (Best Film). “The Theory of Everything” also won Best British Film, while “The Grand Budapest Hotel” took home a total of five awards including Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

Known as the British Oscars, the Ee British Academy Awards were handed out on Sunday.

Boyhood was the big winner at the BAFTAs with wins for Best Film, Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette).

Emmanuel Lubezki received the BAFTA for Cinematography for Birdman, having won this category twice previously, most recently in 2014. On Saturday, Inarritu took home the top prize at the Directors’ Guild of America Awards for Birdman.

This evening brought with it Britain's biggest annual film award show, the annual BAFTA Film Awards (sponsored by a mobile phone company who we think is now owned by BT, but we've lost track). Presented once more by Stephen Fry, the evening proved a good one for the likes of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood, Whiplash, the mighty Pride and The Theory Of Everything. The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. BAFTA has today announced that audiences across the UK, and internationally, will be able to see a feature-length package of this year’s BAFTA-nominated British short films and animations at the cinema from March.

For a third year, BAFTA is partnering with distributor the Independent Cinema Office (Ico), which is handling all UK theatrical bookings, and with British Council, which will tour the films internationally through their network of offices in 110 countries.

Last year’s programme visited 30 venues across the UK, and 50 venues internationally in territories including Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Colombia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.

Selected screenings of the films – which are nominated in the British Short Film and British Short Animation categories – will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers, who this year include several beneficiaries of BAFTA new talent initiatives, such as:

ShortsHD, the Short Movie Channel, and Magnolia Pictures are partnering to release 2015’s Oscar-nominated Short Films in a record 450+ theaters in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Latin America on Friday, January 30. The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2015 will showcase the Live Action, Animation and Documentary short film nominees as three separate theatrical events. It’s going to be another fabulous year at the Oscars, and this morning (January 15) the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled their nominees for the 87th Academy Awards.

All in all, there were no real surprises, with Steve Carell, Bradley Cooper, Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton and Benedict Cumberbatch all scoring nods for Best Actor. And predictably the Best Actress hopefuls include Felicity Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Rosamund Pike, Marion Cotillard and Julianne Moore (however, Jennifer Aniston missed out!).

Wamg was in the thick of nomination morning fever at the home of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.

Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.

Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.

The nominations for the 87th Academy Awards are in! 2014 was packed full of lots of great movies, and all the films and actors that have been nominated are deserving of it.

Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Alejandro Iñárritu’s Birdman and leading the pack and are tied with nine nominations. The Imitation Game comes in third with seven, followed by Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, each with six. All five of these movies have received Best Picture nominations along with three other films — Selma, The Theory of Everything, and Whiplash.

Neil Patrick Harris is set to host The 87th Annual Academy Awards, which will be held on Sunday, February 22nd, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood and will air on ABC.

As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:

Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

After months of speculation and predictions, the nominees for the 2015 Academy Awards are here! Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead in nominations -- both receiving nine -- while American Sniper surprises with six nominations, leaving Selma being recognized in only two main categories.

As expected, Boyhood took six nominations and The Imitation Game landed a whopping eight. Meanwhile, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash and Foxcatcher all have five nominations each.

During a live announcement by Chris Pine, Academy president Cheryl Boone and directors Alfonso Cuarón and J.J. Abrams on Wednesday, the potential winners were revealed to the public.

It’s almost time for the British Academy Film Awards, and earlier today (January 9) the illustrious list of nominees was unveiled. Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is out in front with 11 nods, while “Birdman” is close behind with an impressive 10 chances for glory.

Meanwhile, both Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) have been nominated for Best Actor, though Redmayne insists there’s no competition between them. He explained, "One can try and create a rivalry but it will not happen! We both absolutely understand people wanting to pitch us against each other, but we are old, old friends and I think he is the most wonderful actor. He is sensational in 'The Imitation Game' and I love watching him.”

The Ee British Academy Film Awards nominations, the equivalent of the Oscars, were announced on Friday morning.

Better known as the BAFTAs by those who follow the awards season, the announcement was made by show host Stephen Fry and actor Sam Claflin.

The Grand Budapest Hotel received 11 nominations, followed by Birdman and The Theory of Everything with 10. The Imitation Game received nine nominations, while Boyhood and Whiplash saw five. Mr. Turner, Nightcrawler and Interstellar received four nominations and British indie Pride collected three nods.

The BAFTAs will take place on Sunday, February 8 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The ceremony will be televised on a tape-delay in the U.S. on BBC America.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.

Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, a film that debuted almost exactly a year ago in Berlin, scored 11 nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts this morning. That puts the Fox Searchlight film in the lead while the studio division’s own Birdman is perched in 10 categories. The 24th annual Women in Film and TV Awards, held at the Park Lane Hilton in London yesterday, honoured Vanessa Redgrave with its Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Eon Productions. She is pictured with David Hare, who presented her trophy. “Thank you beyond words,” Redgrave said. “Good luck to everybody who is trying to do good work in film and TV wherever they may be.”

Rosamund Pike was honoured with the Mac Best Performance Award for her role in Gone Girl. The heavily pregnant actress accepted with a charming video message that praised novelist Gillian Flynn and director David Fincher for taking a risk by casting her as Amy. She joked that she could give birth while the lunch was going on, and quipped that “it takes less time to make a human being than it does to make a film.”

Baldvin Baldvin Zophoníasson’s Life In A Fishbowl was the big winner at this year’s Nordic Film Days in Lübeck, taking home the Ndr Film Prize, worth $15,655 (€12,500)

Lead actor Thorsteinn Bachmann accepted the award in person from the five-person jury, which said it was “a touching and hopeful film about seemingly hopeless situations”.

The co-production between Iceland, Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic is Iceland’s submission for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar and is being handled internationally by Films Boutique.

Special mentions were also given to Hisham Zaman’s Letter To The King (Norway) and J-p Valkeapää’s They Have Escaped (Finland) by the jury comprising actors Victoria Trauttmansdorff and Niklas Osterloh, producer Christoph Thoke, Ndr commissioning editor Diana Schulte-Kellinghaus and Finnish film-maker Kirsi Marie Liimatainen.

The 25th anniversary of Brittany’s Dinard British Film Festival gave its top prize, the Golden Hitchcock, to Guy Myhill’s The Goob. The prize comes with distribution assistance and direct support to the director, and promotion on the Cine + channels.

The jury was led by Catherine Deneuve and also included Emilia Fox, Jodie Whittaker, Kevin Macdonald, Penny Woolcock, Amira Casar, Rémy Bezançon, Jean-Pierre Daroussin, Suzanne Clément, Léa Drucker and Alexandre Mallet-Guy. A special mention went to Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank.

The Award for Best Cinematography, sponsored by Technicolor, went to Daniel Wolfe’s Catch Me Daddy, which also won the Allianz Award for best screenplay.

Hong Khaou’s Lilting won the Heartbeat Award Le Prix Coup de Coeur, awarded by l’association La Règle du Jeu.

The Audience Award, sponsored by Première, was awarded to Yann Demange’s ‘71.

The Hamptons International Film Festival also unveils its annual Golden Starfish competition titles.

The Hamptons International Film Festival (Hiff) is to honour filmmaker Joel Schumacher with the Golden Starfish Lifetime Achievement in Directing Award at its 22nd edition (Oct 9-13).

The director of The Lost Boys, Batman Forever and more recently two episodes of House of Cards, will also take part in a “conversation with” session on Oct 11, where he will be also be presented with the award.

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank will also be in conversation at the festival on Oct 12, where she will receive the Creative Impact in Acting Award.

Swank won Best Actress Academy Award’s in 2000 and 2005 for Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby, and her latest performance in The Homesman will be seen when the film is screened at Hiff.
