Stephen King Was Wrong About Peacocks Teacup
Image
When Stephen King beams about a new horror project, hardened genre fans take note. On October 10, 2024, the preeminent horror scribe took to X and professed his adoration for Teacup, a Peacock original horror series that premiered the same day. With two episodes released one week apart, the 8-episode TV event has not resonated as well among critics and general horror fans as with King.

Based on the 1988 novel Stinger by Robert McCammon, Teacup concerns a band of neighbors forced to cooperate and find a means of survival when a fatal force marauds their rural Georgia landscape. Although Stephen King has voiced a high opinion of the show, Teacup has been criticized as little more than an ersatz Walking Dead meets The Crazies mashup that neither terrifies nor adds much to the genre.

You & I Review: A Quietly Affecting Romantic Drama That Kept Me At A Distance
Image
You & I, the new movie from longtime independent film producer Summer Shelton, has a simple and familiar premise: Two former lovers unexpectedly cross paths years after they split, and over the course of several emotional conversations, gradually reconnect. It's a straightforward affair, and one we've all seen play out countless times before. To her credit, Shelton, who directed and wrote the movie in addition to starring, offers some unique touches to the tale of Sara (Shelton) and Joseph (Clayne Crawford).

At the same time, I found myself mostly unmoved by the time the end credits began to roll. It feels like You & I is missing some pieces, and it isn't helped by an ending sequence that goes on for far too long. This stripped-down...

War Pony Review: A Vivid, If Blinkered, Look at Life on a Native American Reservation
Riley Keough
Riley Keough and Gina Gammell’s War Pony embodies the unconventional spirit that’s marked the former’s acting career. Shot on location at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and starring a cast of indigenous Lakota non-actors, the film details the daily struggles of a hustler, Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting), and a neglected middle-schooler, Matho (Ladainian Crazy Thunder). Structured in intertwining storylines, War Pony possesses a gritty essence, but for however uncompromising its glimpse into Bill and Matho’s stagnantly bleak existences may be, the film also feels generic in execution.

This can be chalked up to War Pony’s glaring, almost frustrating lack of nuance or specificity, as the filmmakers never effectively detail the characters’ relation to the various cultural, psychological, or historical intricacies of their milieu. Instead, they’re almost stubbornly focused on capturing an unflinchingly unvarnished view of day-to-day life on society’s fringes.

‘A Little Prayer’ Review: David Strathairn and Jane Levy Are Pitch-Perfect in a Low-Key Drama
Image
As A Little Prayer begins, the voice of an unseen singer floats into the still morning air of a strikingly leafy neighborhood. The spirituals she belts, heard a few times during this quiet drama, take on the role of a disembodied character, sparking responses from the other characters that help to define who they are. Some hear only noise, an intrusion, something to complain about. But for Bill and his daughter-in-law, Tammy, searching souls beautifully played by David Strathairn and Jane Levy, the songs are enchanting, a mystery to savor.

Bill and Tammy are, as she puts it, kindred spirits, but that’s not to say they’re fully in sync. Their bond is the heart of writer-director Angus MacLachlan’s understated film, yet so too is the gap between what Bill wants to believe and the way things are. At the helm of his third feature, after Goodbye to All That...

Cannes Review: Riley Keough’s and Gina Gammell’s ‘War Pony’
Image
It is more than a bit ironic in a Cannes Film Festival where Baz Luhrman’s biopic Elvis is one of the most anticipated entries, that the subject of it, Elvis Presley turns out to have another direct connection this year’s fest. His granddaughter Riley Keough is making her directorial debut with the Un Certain Regard selection, War Pony having its World Premiere today. The film focuses on two young Native Americans coming of age and trying to get by in a story set on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. It is a location that has intrigued other filmmakers like Chloe Zhao (The Rider) in recent years, and now has caught the attention of Keough and her co-director Gina Gammell in order to tell an authentic and unique contemporary tale of Native American youth brought to life by an impressive group of first-time actors, mostly locals the...

‘War Pony’ Review: Riley Keough Shows the Everyday Realities of Reservation Life
Image
If Larry Clark had ever found his way onto the Pine Ridge Reservation, he probably would have come away with a film like “War Pony,” which observes its young Native American characters hustling, skating and stealing drugs from otherwise distracted adults. Presenting such behavior without judgment, first-time directors Gina Gammell and Riley Keough developed this unvarnished portrait in collaboration with their actors, capturing something at once tragic and true about these kids, who are torn between Oglala Lakota traditions and the consumer culture around them.

A few years older than the hero of Chloé Zhao’s recent “The Rider” — a movie this one can’t help but resemble, at least superficially — Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) is like the slacker version of that American dreamer. He siphons gas from strangers’ tanks and goes around asking people if they want to buy a stolen PlayStation. He already has two kids by two different women.

2022 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Summer Shelton’s You & I

Alice Fades Away - Stephanie Brown - 16643
Throughout the last couple of years, directorial debuts have been a thing of mesmerising beauty, with each new filmmaker bringing a different recipe to the narrative conventions, and experimentations with tone, design and character. The same could be said for Ryan Bliss, through his debut feature, Alice Fades Away. Where inspirations from genres of the past generate something new, instead of merely reflecting the stories that have been told before.

Alice (Ashley Shelton), hides away from her past and present haunts, at her uncle’s farm - an idyllic, isolated patch where new lives can be formed and old ones left behind. There she meets other outsiders seeking shelter who have been taken in by her uncle in what appears to be through philanthropic motivations alone. But while her new refuge offers solace, secrets and faces from the past are not far behind.

Unfortunately the predominant problem with the feature lies.

Ashley Shelton Fights to Survive in Thriller 'Alice Fades Away' Trailer
"Go get my grandson, bring him home!" 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Alice Fades Away, set right after the end of World War II. The film is the feature directorial debut of Ryan Bliss and arrives on VOD in February. On the run, Alice takes refuge on her uncle’s farm, now home to WWII survivors. But when a ruthless and unpredictable man arrives searching for her son, the last link to the family dynasty, they must fight back to make it out alive. Bolstered by a star making performance from Ashley Shelton and strong supporting work from veteran actors William Sadler and Blanche Baker, the film is described as a "thrilling and timely tale of a woman driven to the edge and forced to fight back." These kind of stories are becoming a dime a dozen, and unfortunately this one just doesn't look that good.

‘The Evening Hour’ Review: The Warmest Movie You’ll Ever See About the Opioid Crisis
Braden King
, Braden King’s “The Evening Hour” shines on a rural Appalachian town like a golden ray of fading sunlight; as dark as the story gets, this hyper-empathetic film never fails to see its characters as decent people trying to make the best of a bad situation. This is the kind of movie that opens with someone reading a Bible verse over a shot of mountain grass swaying in the wind as the first woozy strains of Boxhead Ensemble’s score prepare to take your breath away.

Which isn’t to say that “The Evening Hour” elides the awfulness of the epidemic; that same opening shot pans across the landscape in time to see an ominous explosion in the distance. Every frame is saturated with a sense of quiet desperation. The rival drug pushers inevitably pull their guns on each other, and even the kindest intentions have a way of souring into sadness.

"Something, Anything": A Conversation with Paul Harrill
Paul Harrill’s Something, Anything, which co-premiered recently at the Wisconsin Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival, is a portrait of a young woman in crisis. Peggy [Ashley Shelton] has already achieved her “stereotypically Southern” (as she’s described in the press kit) ambitions: a successful career in realty, a husband, a house in the suburbs, and a baby on the way. In the opening moments of the film, however, she’s forced to confront her dissatisfaction with it all. A family tragedy sends Peggy on a sojourn that leads her to the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky and, eventually, to a simpler life in a small apartment overlooking the Tennessee River.

Harrill first gained recognition in 2001 when his short film, Gina, An Actress, Age 29, won the top prize at Sundance and enjoyed an impressive run of screenings at international festivals. Starring Amy Hubbard and Frankie Faison (Burrell from The Wire...
