Cinema Audio Society Awards: ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘The Wild Robot’ Among Film Winners
Image
A Complete Unknown, The Wild Robot and Music By John Williams were the motion picture winners at the 61st Annual Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. The celebration of excellence in sound mixing across film, television and non-fiction programming also honored Masters of the Air, Shogun and The Bear in its TV categories.

“This year’s winners transported audiences to historic battlegrounds, to bustling kitchens and deeply personal moments of an American icon, proving once again that sound is the rhythm in the heart of movies,” said Cas President Peter Kurland. “From sweeping cinematic epics to intimate portraits of life, the artistry of sound mixing continues to push creative and technical boundaries. These exceptional professionals don’t just enhance stories—they define them. Tonight, we celebrate their dedication, innovation, and the lasting impact of their craft.”

Comedian Tom Papa returned as host of this year’s ceremony which was held at...

‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘The Wild Robot,’ and ‘Music by John Williams’ Win at the 2025 Cas Awards
Image
“A Complete Unknown,” “The Wild Robot” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary society awards), and “Music by John Williams” were the live action, animation, and documentary winners at the 61st Cas Awards, held February 22 at the Beverly Hilton.

For TV, the Cinema Audio Society of sound mixers awarded “Masters of the Air,” “Shōgun,” and “The Bear” in the categories of non-theatrical/limited series, one-hour, and half-hour.

As previously announced, director Denis Villeneuve received the Cas Filmmaker Award and multi-award-winning sound mixer Tod A. Maitland Cas was honored with the Cas Career Achievement Award.

The Cas sound mixing win for “A Complete Unknown” is the first Oscar indicator for Best Sound; in four out of the last five years the Cas winner has matched the Oscar winner. Now we wait for the Mpse Golden Reel Awards to pick its sound editing winners this weekend for dialogue/Adr, effects/foley work,...

‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Gladiator II,’ ‘Wicked’ Land Cinema Audio Society Nominations
Image
The Cinema Audio Society (Cas) has nominated the sound teams behind A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II and Wicked in its live-action feature category for the 2025 Cas Awards celebrating excellence in sound mixing.

All five films have been Oscar shortlisted in the sound category, which since 2021 has encompassed both sound editing and mixing. The five additional shortlisted films are Alien: Romulus, Blitz, Emilia Pérez, Joker: Folie à Deux and The Wild Robot. Traditionally, the winner of the Cas award in the live-action feature category has mirrored the Academy Award winner for sound. However, last year, Tarn Willers and Johnnie Burn took home the Oscar for The Zone of Interest while Cas awarded Oppenheimer.

In the animated motion picture category, Cas nominated Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, The Wild Robot and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Elton John: Never Too Late,...

2025 Cinema Audio Society nominations list: ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked’ make the cut, but not ‘Emilia Pérez’
Image
The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the Cas nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.

The Cas Awards used to correlate with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, but that category was consolidated with Best Sound Editing for the 93rd annual awards honoring the best films of 2020. Now the Oscars present a single award for Best Sound. The Oscar champs since them have been Sound of Metal (2020), Dune: Part One...

Cinema Audio Society Nominations: ‘Wicked,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and ‘Gladiator II’ in the Mix
Image
The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominees in seven categories for the 61st Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing 2024. Sound mixing is meant to make a film’s environment, be it the most muted mumblecore world or the wildest, loudest fantasy, seem completely natural. Mixing requires specialized skill and artistry in the craft of sound, and Cas members review hundreds of projects to ensure the nominees truly reflect excellence in sound mixing in Motion Picture and Television entertainment.

The nominees they have chosen are, unsurprisingly, some of the most complex and musical film worlds of 2024, ones where the overall vibe is as important to get across as the story information and emotional resonance carried through dialogue, sound effects, songs, and score. “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” are among the feature nominees, while “The Wild Robot,” “Moana 2,” and “Inside Out 2” rank among the animated nominees.

“There’s Almost No Guardrails” : ‘THR Presents’ Q&a With the Creative Team Behind ‘The Boys Presents: Diabolical’
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The Boys supervillain Homelander is just as maniacally insecure in short-form animation as he is in live-action.

In 2021, after two seasons of critical acclaim and a season two Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series, Amazon Prime Video expanded the world of The Boys, its no-holds-barred satire of superhero storytelling and modern-day America. And in March 2022, the second addition to the Boys shared universe, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, premiered with eight animated shorts, each utilizing anthology storytelling and a unique animation style.

The Boys and Diabolical executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg originally approached comedy triumvirate The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer) to write an episode, but Samberg himself had a rather unexpected idea. “I have a long-running rule of when Seth and Evan call me, I just say, ‘What is it?’ And the answer is almost always yes,” Samberg...
