Très Chic! Saint Laurent Prods. Unites Film and Fashion at Cannes With Three Competition Titles
Image
Sophomore slump? Not for Saint Laurent Productions.

One year after a high-profile splash with its debut film project — Pedro Almodóvar’s gay cowboy Western Strange Way of Life — the luxury house’s production division returns to the Cannes Film Festival with three starry films in the main competition: Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez, David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds and Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope.

Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello is credited as a producer on the pics, and he and his team delivered cast wardrobes. Emilia Perez stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Édgar Ramírez in the story of a lawyer who receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss disappear by becoming the woman he’s always dreamed of being.

The Shrouds stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt, and follows a businessman who, after the death of his wife, copes by inventing a...

Strange Way Of Life | Pedro Almodovar short film coming to Netflix
Pedro Almodóvar
Pedro Almodovar’s Strange Way Of Life is coming to Netflix in April, after debuting last year: more on the release here.

Pedro Almodovar has – of course – a hugely impressive filmography behind him, from his breakthrough film Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown to more recent successes like Volver, his highest grossing film worldwide to date.

His most recent release was a half hour short film entitled Strange Way Of Life, his second short to be written and shot in English following 2020’s The Human Voice.

The synopsis reads as follows:

A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. 25 years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting,...

Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke's "Strange Way of Life" Hits Theaters This Fall
Image
Image Source: YouTube user Sony Pictures Classic

What do you call it when two Hollywood heartthrobs team up to maximize a joint slay? You might call it "Strange Way of Life," a new short film from acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. In the film, which premiered at Cannes in May, Pascal and Hawke play two old friends (and lovers), both cowboys, who reunite to solve a murder. Sony Pictures Classics, who'll be releasing the film in the United States, shared the first trailer for the short on April 26, which highlights a soapy, over-the-top film anchored by Pascal and Hawke's lead performances. On Aug. 3, Sony announced that the film will be released in theaters this autumn.

Pascal - who stars in "The Last of Us" and "The Mandalorian" - plays a gunslinger, while Hawke plays the local sheriff. In a 2022 interview with Indiewire, Almodóvar called...

Cannes: Ethan Hawke Praises ‘Strange Way of Life’ Co-Star Pedro Pascal as “Very Attractive, Extremely Talented Man”
Image
One of the more intriguing selections at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — a 30-minute gay Western short film from beloved Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar, presented by French fashion house Saint Laurent and starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal — finally had its world premiere.

Almodóvar, for one, was pleased as punch to see a capacity crowd seated inside the Théâtre Claude Debussy on a rain-soaked Wednesday afternoon to take in his Strange Way of Life.

“This is the best place to be in the world now, at least for me,” Almodovar said during brief remarks ahead of the screening. “You are the first audience that is going to see my new movie. You will be the first reaction. We are nervous and very excited at the same time.”

Almodóvar’s emotions are understandable considering he’s a Cannes legend who served as president of the jury in 2017 in addition to...

‘Strange Way of Life’ Review: Pedro Almodóvar’s Fashion Short Reduces Its Gay Cowboys to a Couple of Clothes Horses
Image
Every time two cowboys point their guns at one another on screen, there’s something homoerotic at play. Hollywood Westerns may be loath to admit as much, but not so Pedro Almodóvar, who casts Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as lonesome cowboys reunited after 25 years in “Strange Way of Life.” Commissioned by Saint Laurent Productions (which is also premiering a Jean-Luc Godard short at Cannes), this half-baked half-hour serves as a sexy showcase for creative director Anthony Vaccarello’s latest designs, while barely delivering on the promise that an Almodóvar-made “gay cowboy” movie conjures in the imagination.

At the Cannes premiere, the Spanish director described “Strange” as his response to a question posed by “Brokeback Mountain”: What can two men do on a ranch? Silva (Pascal) gives Jake (Hawke) his answer in the final seconds of the short, and it’s sweet, though it turns out Almodóvar is misremembering Ang Lee’s 2005 Western.

‘Strange Way of Life’ Review: Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal Heat Up the Desert in Pedro Almodóvar’s Intoxicating Queer Western
Image
Whether Pedro Almodóvar is expressing regret over turning down Brokeback Mountain all those years ago, continuing to dip his toes in English-language projects after The Human Voice or reclaiming the place of gay cowboys in America’s Old West, I am here for it and most definitely won’t be alone.

Premiering in a Special Screening slot in Cannes, Strange Way of Life (Extraña forma de vida) runs a skimpy half-hour but packs that fleet running time with greater depth of feeling and evocative atmosphere than most directors manage in a full feature. Stir in smoldering turns from Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal and you get a flavorful bite to be savored.

How Sony Classics will maximize the commercial theatrical potential of a film running the length of a TV episode remains a curious question. But the potent combination of two gifted lead actors and a director who’s among...

‘Strange Way of Life’ trailer: Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke star in Pedro Almodovar’s queer cowboy short film [Watch]
Image
“Strange Way of Life,” the new short film from Oscar-winning director Pedro Almodovar, received its first trailer on Wednesday, weeks before its set to premiere as an out-of-competition title at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

The film, a queer Western that Almodovar previously said “could be my answer to ‘Brokeback Mountain,” stars Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as a pair of gunslingers who reunite after years apart. Here’s the official synopsis Almodovar provided Cannes: “A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva, the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip...

First Trailer for Almodovar's 'Strange Way of Life' with Hawke & Pascal
Image
"Years ago you asked me... what two men could do living together on a ranch." Pathe UK has revealed the first official trailer for Spanish master Pedro Almodóvar's latest film titled Strange Way of Life - which is premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival this May. This is another medium-length film from Almodóvar, coming in under 60 minutes, very similar to his other "short" The Human Voice that he made with Tilda Swinton. After twenty-five years Silva rides a horse across the desert to visit his friend Sheriff Jake. They celebrate the meeting, but the next morning Jake tells him that reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their friendship. It seems to be a romantic western - co-starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke as the two cowboys. The film's cast includes Manu Ríos, Jason Fernández, José Condessa, Pedro Casablanc, Daniel Rived, and Erenice Lohan.

Ethan Hawke has signed on to star in Pedro Almodóvar’s next film, “Strange Way of Life,” (“Extraña forma de vida”), a half-hour Western.

The Spanish director will shoot the short before making his English-language feature debut, “A Manual for Cleaning Women,” with Cate Blanchett.

Hawke stars opposite Chile’s Pedro Pascal, who portrayed Oberyn Martell in “Game of Thrones,” in a film which will be “another exercise of freedom in the line of ‘The Human Voice,’” said producer Agustín Almodóvar.

The short will be shot in English. Set up at El Deseo, the Almodóvar brothers’ Madrid-based production company, “Strange Way of Life” begins with a man, Silva, riding on a horse across a desert to Bitter Creek. He has come to visit Sheriff Jake. 25 years earlier, the two men worked together as hired gunmen.

Silva comes with the pretext of re-encountering his friend from youth. They celebrate their re-encounter.
