StudioCanal Invests In ‘The Last Kingdom’ & ‘Code 404’ Producer Phil Temple’s Birdie Pictures
Image
Exclusive: StudioCanal has confirmed that it is back in the UK acquisitions game by taking a “significant” stake in a production outfit founded by The Last Kingdom producer Phil Temple.

The French production group has acquired an undisclosed holding in Birdie Pictures, which was established by former Kudos executive producer Temple in late 2022.

Birdie Pictures is already developing the Sunday Times bestseller, The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, into a television series.

Janice Hallett’s book centers on true-crime writer Amanda Bailey’s quest to interview a teenager who was deemed to be the anti-Christ when she was a baby by a dangerous cult, known as the Alperton Angels.

Temple’s most recent project for Kudos was This Town, the BBC1 ska music drama created by Steven Knight and starring Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery.

His previous credits include Sky comedy-drama Code 404, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, and The Last Kingdom,...

Retreat (2011)
Directed by: Carl Tibbets

Written by: Carl Tibbets and Janice Hallett

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, Jamie Bell

Movies are a powerful medium, capable manipulating our emotions even as they entertain. Each genre of film has its own power: Comedies make us happy (ha ha!), dramas make us sad (boo hoo!), action flicks electrify us (oh wow!). But thrillers force us to ponder the question "What would you do if this terrible improbable thing happened?" (oh crap!). Thanks, thrillers.

Retreat, writer/director Carl Tibbets' skittish new thriller, asks, "What would you do if a suspicious stranger told you, persuasively, that a pandemic had wiped out humanity and your only hope for survival was to do everything he says?"

Following a personal tragedy, Martin (Cillian Murphy) and Kate (Thandie Newton) travel to an isolated island for a vacation, hoping to recapture happier times and mend their marriage, which is troubled by guilt and recriminations.

Retreat (2011) Review
by Marcey Papandrea, MoreHorror.com

I have to be honest; Retreat is not an easy film to review. The reason being is that this is a film best seen with as little prior knowledge as possible and it is rather difficult to discuss and review the film while remaining as spoiler free as possible. I shall do my best to not reveal much in terms of the plot, but you best just go check this film out, because it is a damn good one.

Retreat comes from co-writer/director Carl Tibbetts, this is his debut and I have to say for a debut this man knows his stuff! Usually you can tell when a film is someone’s first behind the camera, but not here. The film felt like it came from a seasoned veteran and that really speaks volumes in terms of Tibbetts talents and what he crafted here.

Retreat and Counting Down the Minutes to the Big Reveal: A Movie Review
Director: Carl Tibbetts.

Writers: Carl Tibbetts and Janice Hallett.

Retreat is a misnomer; this is a vacation from hell! Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton and Jamie Bell star in this film from first time director Carl Tibbetts. How did he get such a great cast on his first film? This holiday involves murder, infection and marital strife. Throw in a recent miscarriage and you have a grumpy time all round. Luckily there are some soft moments early, with the action begining in first third of the film. Released October 21st, Retreat is a psychological thriller that plays with the truth and viewers' perceptions of reality.

Kate (Newton) and Martin (Murphy) are dropped off at an isolated island for some soul searching and relationship mending. Kate is withdrawn, while Martin is oblivious to the issues at hand. Then, their quiet retreat is invaded by a private of the United Kingdom army. He is cut and bruised.

25 Best Horror Films / Thrillers of 2011 (so far)
Filmmakers have continued to push boundaries and find new innovative ways to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. Since Alfred Hitchcock directors strived to provoke viewer’s nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, others have focused more on a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak, surrealism and more. This year we see vampires, outbreaks, poltergeists, aliens, zombies, and psychological horror/character studies featured on our list.

What is considered to be a horror film has varied from decade to decade. These days, the term “horror” is applied to films which display more explicit gore, jump scenes/scares or supernatural content whereas early horror movies were largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

New Trailer, Poster, and Images For Carl Tibbetts’ Thriller Retreat
New trailer, images, and a fresh poster for Carl Tibbetts’ end-of-the-world thriller “Retreat”. Or, more precisely, possibly end-of-the-world thriller, as there seems to be plenty of doubt about the worthiness of Jamie Bell’s character in the film. He could just be a psycho with a gun, as it turns out. Or not. I suppose that’ll be one of the film’s big reveals — whether he’s telling the truth or not. We shall see. The film also co-stars Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton, and is, for all intents and purposes, a 3-person movie. Kate and Martin escape from personal tragedy to an Island Retreat. Cut off from the outside world, their attempts to recover are shattered when a Man is washed ashore, with news of airborne killer disease that is sweeping through Europe. The film is the directorial debut of Carl Tibbetts, who also co-writes the script with Janice Hallett.

Fantasia 2011: ‘Retreat’ an absorbing thriller that consistently keeps you guessing
Retreat

Directed by Carl Tibbetts

Written by Janice Hallett & Carl Tibbetts

UK, 2011

Retreat might not be a perfect film, but it is a well-constructed and closely observed claustrophobic thriller that continually teases its audience to uncover the truth behind all the madness. Both psychologically frightening and maddening to the senses, Retreat is a promising debut for former visual artist and now writer-director Carl Tibbetts.

Tibbetts makes a wise decision in keeping his cast small and restricting his locale to one setting for his first independent feature-length film – allowing for a clever, compacted and well-crafted three-character piece. It would be a shame to disclose too many plot details for a film brimming with so many plot twists while working on what is essentially a simple premise, In short, Retreat is an exercise in audience manipulation. As seen in the trailer, a married couple escape from personal tragedy to a familiar island getaway.

Cillian Murphy & Jamie Bell face off in Retreat trailer
Carl Tibbets might be a green director but he must be doing something right because the script for Retreat, which he co-wrote with Janice Hallett, attracted the talents of Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton and Jamie Bell.

Martin (Murphy) and Kate (Newton), are headed to a remote island to spend some time together and try to piece their relationship back together after a family tragedy (ah, Eden. I'm having flashbacks to Antichrist (review)) but their time of peaceful reconnection comes to an abrupt end with the unexpected arrival of a man (Bell) who washes up on shore. He tells them that an airborne disease is spreading through Europe killing everyone in its wake. Martin believes him, Kate keeps crying she wants to go home and the mysterious man starts causing all sorts of trouble.

So you've got the potential end of the world, Jamie Bell playing a crazy man (yes!) and...

Icon Acquires Spoof The Biggest Movie Of All Time 3D; Sony Picks Up Cillian Murphy Thriller Retreat
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer constantly justify our hatred with a slew of awful spoofs movies: Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie, and last year's Vampires Suck.  But darn it if I didn't chuckle at the title of their latest, The Biggest Movie of All Time 3D.  It will still be awful, of course.  According to Variety, Icon Entertainment will grant The Biggest Movie the opportunity for global atrocity with a deal for the worldwide sales rights secured at the Cannes Film Festival.  Peter Safran (Buried) will produce. In more promising acquisition news, Variety reports Sony Pictures Worldwide has picked up the North American rights to the thriller Retreat, led by Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, and Jamie Bell.  Hit the jump for more on Retreat. Thandie Newton and Cillian Murphy in this First Poster for the Retreat
The apocalypse continues and this time it is an "airborne virus" that is bringing death (Quiet). This is part of the premise for first time director Carl Tibbett's Retreat. This film is currently in production in Wales (Quiet) and at the American Film Market. A showing date has not been announced for the film at the Afm, but here is the first poster.

The poster art shows actors Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell above a lonely, isolated shack. This refuge is the only protection for characters Kate, Martin and a mysterious soldier, as a deadly virus reduces the mainland population to nothing.

A partial synopsis for the Retreat is here:

"A husband and wife rent a remote island cottage while trying to repair their marriage. One day they find a biohazard-suited soldier washed up on the beach, who warns them that everybody on the mainland has been killed...

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant is to star opposite Jason Isaacs and Thandie Newton in the psychological thriller Retreat.

The Magent Films production centres on a holidaying couple (played by Isaacs and Newton), according to Screen Daily. They discover a half-dead man (Tennant) on their doorstep who tells them a deadly virus is killing people on the mainland.

Magnet producer Gary Sinyor said: "It reminded me of Dead Calm when I first read it. Only better.
