The animated fantasy world of The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf feels trapped in an 83-minute film. No doubt it is lovely to look at as a Netflix Original Anime—a stricter definition of “anime” is stretching it, being applied to the work of a South Korea-based animation company. For as much as Studio Mir’s smatterings of color and movement will please the eye as it did with Legend of Korra and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, the mission of the story is lost in a haze.

As we've previously learned, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is an upcoming South Korean-American adult animated dark fantasy film for Netflix. The upcoming feature-length adventure will serve as a spin-off of the Netflix series The Witcher. The film itself is set before the events of the live-action series, and will look to explain more about the Witcher's world, including how the magically mutated monster hunters are created. In January 2020, Netflix had announced that an animated film adaption was in the works from Korean animation studio, Studio Mir. During the virtual WitcherCon event in July 2021, a "Date Announcement" teaser was released. The voice cast for the upcoming film includes Theo James as Vesemir, Lara Pulver as Tetra, Graham McTavish as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell as Lady Zerbst.

The makers seem to be going for a less serious tone with this one, and judging by the teaser, Nightmare of the Wolf looks fun and action-packed. The trailer also features Vesemir naked in the bathtub, a tribute to the games and Henry Cavill's now-iconic scene from The Witcher.

The official synopsis for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf reads as follows: "The world of The Witcher expands in this anime origin story: Before Geralt, there was his mentor Vesemir - a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin.

The Witcher has made no secret of the fact that the magically enhanced monster hunters are a dying breed. It should therefore come as no surprise that Vesemir, mentor to Geralt and the main character of the upcoming Netflix anime The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, conversely lived his life with wry humor during more booming times than those of his brooding successor in the live action series. In fact, the latest trailer for the anime presents a young and witty witcher of a bygone age along with the companions we can expect to meet.
