This The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf review contains no spoilers.
The animated fantasy world of The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf feels trapped in an 83-minute film. No doubt it is lovely to look at as a Netflix Original Anime—a stricter definition of “anime” is stretching it, being applied to the work of a South Korea-based animation company. For as much as Studio Mir’s smatterings of color and movement will please the eye as it did with Legend of Korra and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, the mission of the story is lost in a haze.
Produced and penned by Witcher staff writer Beau DeMayo, Nightmare of the Wolf focuses on Vesemir, the mentor of the star of the Netflix series, Geralt. Vesemir is a slight antithesis to the grumpish Geralt played by a grimy and guttural Henry Cavill. The man who will become Geralt’s...

As we've previously learned, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is an upcoming South Korean-American adult animated dark fantasy film for Netflix. The upcoming feature-length adventure will serve as a spin-off of the Netflix series The Witcher. The film itself is set before the events of the live-action series, and will look to explain more about the Witcher's world, including how the magically mutated monster hunters are created. Nightmare of the Wolf will focus on the origin story of Geralt's mentor and fellow Witcher, Vesemir. Check out the all new full-length trailer below!

Netflix has released a teaser trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, an animated prequel to The Witcher. The upcoming film will offer an anime-inspired spin on young Vesemir's adventures on The Continent. The teaser features a cool and charismatic Vesemir, which is a change from the usual sullen demeanor of witchers. The makers seem to be going for a less serious tone with this one, and judging by the teaser, Nightmare of the Wolf looks fun and action-packed. The trailer also features Vesemir naked in the bathtub, a tribute to the games and Henry Cavill's now-iconic scene from The Witcher.
The official synopsis for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf reads as follows: "The world of The Witcher expands in this anime origin story: Before Geralt, there was his mentor Vesemir - a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin.

The Witcher has made no secret of the fact that the magically enhanced monster hunters are a dying breed. It should therefore come as no surprise that Vesemir, mentor to Geralt and the main character of the upcoming Netflix anime The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, conversely lived his life with wry humor during more booming times than those of his brooding successor in the live action series. In fact, the latest trailer for the anime presents a young and witty witcher of a bygone age along with the companions we can expect to meet.
Voiced by Theo James (Castlevania), Vesemir appears in the trailer for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf as a shrewd slayer-for-hire, not overly concerned with the low opinion normal humans have for those of his profession. While a certain moral code has always been embedded in The Witcher stories, it’s also true that “every deal has a price,...

As streamers continue to carve out their niches for specialized content, Netflix has established a firm foothold in original anime production of both established and original IP. On Tuesday morning, the platform outlined a group of exciting upcoming titles, headlined by the hugely anticipated “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf” animated spinoff, in a pre-recorded Studio Focus panel, streamed as part of the Annecy Film Festival.
In “The Witcher,” one of Netflix’s most popular original series to date, Henry Cavill plays Geralt of Rivera, the outcast monster hunter who is loathed by most he comes across and willing to do dangerous and unsavory work for pay, earning himself a guarded admiration from some he’s helped. But, before Geralt came Vesemir, a headstrong young witcher who relishes his job and the earthly benefits he reaps in doing what others can’t or won’t. Seemingly unshakable, Vesemir will face...
