‘Army of Thieves’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Stars: Matthias Schweighofer, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, Christian Steyer | Written by Shay Hatten | Directed by Matthias Schweighofer

With the release of Army of the Dead, Netflix gave us a fun zombie film that was pretty throw away but promised more. One character that stole the movie though was Ludgwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighofer) so it’s only fair that a prequel, Army of Thieves, would focus on the safe cracking hero.

Living a boring life in Germany, we discover how Dieter became the legendary safe cracker he did. We also meet the titular Army of Thieves who worked with him to pull off some of the biggest European heists, before his sights were set on the zombie infested Las Vegas bank job.

Where Army of the Dead was more about non-stop high-action zombie battles, in Army of Thieves they are little more than anxiety nightmares and perhaps premonitions for Dieter.

‘Army of Thieves’ Review: A Prequel to ‘Army of the Dead,’ With No Zombies and One Genius Safecracker
Image
If Hans Landa and Danny Ocean had a son, he might have turned out something like Sebastian (Matthias Schweighöfer), the talky, insanely gifted, but insecure hero of “Army of Thieves.” A Berlin office teller who hides his mojo behind an earnestly chirpy German accent, he’s an obsessive amateur safecracker — not a crook but a kind of savant hobbyist who dreams of unlocking metal fortress vaults the way a young theater bug in the Midwest might fantasize about making his Broadway debut.

“Army of Thieves” is a prequel to “Army of the Dead,” the Zack Snyder apocalyptic zombie heist thriller in which Sebastian — known, at that point, as Dieter — hooked up with a team of thieves in Vegas. Snyder’s movie, released just five months ago, was an entertainingly overstuffed genre mash-up. “Army of Thieves,” directed by its star, Matthias Schweighöfer (from a script by Snyder and Shay Hatten), is...

Netflix has debuted the full-length official trailer during their #Tudum fan event for Army of Thieves, a spin-off prequel for Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead. Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Universe Is Here to Stay
Zack Snyder at an event for Sucker Punch (2011)
Despite his exit from Warner Bros’ big-screen DC movie universe, director Zack Snyder isn’t done with shared universes just yet. And while his tenure as the creative lead of the Dceu, which culminated with this year’s Snyder Cut of Justice League, may have been polarizing to say the least, the Army of the Dead director may actually be just what Netflix needed.

After years of chasing ways to build its own coveted blockbuster shared universe, such as with its failed attempt to launch a superhero universe based on Mark Millar’s Jupiter’s Legacy, the streaming service finally seems to have the foundation it was looking for with Snyder’s return to the genre that turned him into an A-lister back in 2004. In fact, Army of the Dead was originally conceived as a sequel to Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, but almost two decades later, it’s grown much bigger than that.

Return to the action-packed world of Army of the Dead in the first trailer for Netflix's upcoming prequel, Army of Thieves. Zack Snyder is on board as a producer for this one, with lead actor Matthias Schweighöfer taking on directing duties. Working from a screenplay by Shay Hatten, from an original story co-written by Snyder and Hatten, Army...

The Invisibles (2017) – Review
From the rich historical archives of WWII comes another true tale of struggle and survival, when Hitler and his cronies enacted the”Final Solution”. So what makes this film special? Well, it was produced and filmed in Germany and mixes real footage with actual interviews of the people who lived the story. The biggest twist is that it doesn’t focus on families fleeing the country and blending in or going “underground” in those nearby foreign lands. This is about the Jews who would not leave their homeland, risking their lives to “hide in plain sight” (sometimes even venturing from the closets and attics to walk the streets). Another unique aspect of this film is that it’s almost an anthology, splitting the narrative amongst a quartet of youths barely past their teens. It is set in Berlin, so some of the principals often run into the same people, though the main four never meet.

‘Polar’ Review (Netflix)
Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Vanessa Hudgens, Katheryn Winnick, Fei Ren, Ruby O. Fee, Matt Lucas, Robert Maillet, Anthony Grant, Josh Cruddas, Lovina Yavari, Ayisha Issa, Pedro Miguel Arce, Anastasia Marinina, Martin Zolotarev, Richard Dreyfuss | Written by Jayson Rothwell | Directed by Jonas Åkerlund

Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, Polar is the latest graphic novel adaption in the world of cinema, in particular, to hit Netflix. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as retired assassin Duncan Vizla hunted down by the shady assassin syndicate who once employed his services as a seasoned killer. The result, while enjoyable on occasion with a multitude of outrageous action set pieces is on a whole overabundantly dependable on a repellent colour grading and boorish style with peevish misogyny.

Polar offers a great deal of bloodshed and abstract character yet sadly thinks they’re the highlight of a picture that denies the audience even a minuscule or basic form of personal engagement or depth.

Oscar-Nominated ‘Never Look Away’ Arrives In Theaters; ‘The Invisibles’ Appears – Specialty B.O. Preview
Martina Gedeck, Sebastian Koch, and Ulrich Mühe in La Vie des autres (2006)
German filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmark made a splash in the foreign language box office over a decade ago with The Lives of Others, which took the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. He is back again with Sony Pictures Classics for Never Look Away, which is also vying for Oscar this year. Also out in theaters beginning Friday is Greenwich Entertainment’s WWII-era drama, The Invisibles, which was the first pick up for the company back in 2017. And on a decidedly different note, Cinedigm is mixing camp and horror with Dead Ant starring Tom Arnold and Sean Astin.

Also this weekend, Focus Features is taking Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman back to theaters following its six Oscar nominations. The company said the film, which grossed over $48.5M in its initial run in theaters starting last August, will play 168 theaters around the country beginning Friday. Said Focus president Lisa Bunnell, “We...

Mads Mikkelsen in Polar (2019)
Film Review: ‘Polar’
Mads Mikkelsen in Polar (2019)
It would be one thing if “Polar” were director Jonas Åkerlund’s satirical send-up of American hyper-stylized, hyper-violent exploitative genre pictures. But it’s not — or at least it arrives a decade too late to register as such. What’s clear is that this abhorrent actioner (an adaptation of Victor Santos’ graphic novel “Polar: Came From the Cold”) about a morally conflicted hitman with a price on his head is vulgar auteurism at its most depraved. It even has the audacity to cloak many of its repugnant sentiments and debauchery in the guise of female empowerment. Gratuitous sex, gruesome torture, copious amounts of gore, and garish imagery populate the picture. Those qualities might be reason enough for some to watch, although a great many others would do well to scroll right past it on their Netflix feeds.

Top assassin Duncan Vizla (Mads Mikkelsen), known in his field by the nickname “the Black Kaiser,...

‘The Invisibles’ Film Review: Documentary and Drama Combine to Tell Holocaust Survivor Stories
Joseph Goebbels
In 1943, Joseph Goebbels proudly declared Berlin “free of Jews.” Though he did come markedly close to his goal, around 1,700 Jews managed to endure in secret through the war. “The Invisibles” tells the stories of a few of these survivors, bringing their astonishing histories to life in straightforward but consistently compelling fashion.

Director Claus Räfle interviews four Jews who are now in their 90s, all of whom eloquently share their experiences as teenagers in Berlin. Interspersed with their memories are dramatic re-enactments, a risky approach handled with enough skill to add to the film’s depth.

Hanni Weissenberg was an orphan when she was forced, at 17, into a terrifying homelessness. As played in flashback by Alice Dwyer, she dyes her hair blonde and spends her days seeking refuge in movie theaters. Every soldier who flirts with her brings untold danger, but one winds up offering crucial salvation.
