The future was looking bright for the late-night comedy show After Midnight, as it had previously secured a renewal for another season. Unfortunately for fans, it's been revealed that Season 3 won't be moving forward after all.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, After Midnight is set to end after its current second season. CBS confirmed that the final episodes of the show ill air in June with no third season in the works. Its 12:35 a.m. time slot hasn't found a new replacement at this time, and it's still unclear if the network will hold onto that hour, or if it will go back to local stations' programming. The show was recently renewed for Season 3, but After Midnight will instead conclude with Season 2 so its host, Taylor Tomlinson, can turn her focus back to her stand-up comedy.
Tomlinson said in a statement, “Hosting After Midnight has genuinely been the experience of a lifetime,...

Netflix is one of the largest streaming services, and, aside from having other licensed titles on its platform, it has also created a name as a studio. Its titles often feature high-profile actors, and despite some of them not often enchanting both the critics and the audience, the streamer has had an amazing few months.
One of the titles that received major success recently is Cameron Diaz's Back in Action. The action comedy, which stars Diaz and Jamie Foxx as retired spies, also comes with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the actress' long break from acting. Per Tudum, the break didn't stop her from continuing to be one of the biggest action stars, as Back in Action joined Netflix's prestigious Most Popular Movies list.

Hulu has released a trailer for the upcoming comedy special from Chris Distefano, streaming Feb. 21.
Titled “It’s Just Unfortunate,” the stand-up hour sees the Brooklyn-born comic riffing on his three Puerto Rican kids, his 13-year-old stepson and his dad’s rudimentary understanding of Latin culture (“They throw the parties for the girls at 15 — they call them Quesadillas”).
In the minute-long teaser, Distefano quips, “My girl, she wants a guy who knows how to build stuff. I don’t know how to build anything. I can build walls — emotionally.”
Distefano’s last stand-up special, “Speshy Weshy,” aired on Netflix in 2022, and his 2019 debut “Size 38 Waist” came courtesy of Comedy Central.
“What an honor to be one of the 12 comics chosen by Hulu,” Distefano said in a statement to Variety. “I feel like an apostle right now. Chrissy The Catholic. I bought my entire outfit at the Queens Center Mall. Shoutout Zara.

Anxiety, depression, addiction, suicidal ideations, cancer diagnoses — we’re not exactly in “take my wife, please” territory with some of today’s more adventurous comedians, who mine their occasionally harrowing personal experience for material. “Group Therapy” gathers half a dozen of them for a free-ranging discussion in front of cameras and a live audience, “hosted” by Neil Patrick Harris. This is not exactly the most profound forum for probing mental health, or comedy’s relationship to it for that matter. Still, Neil Berkeley’s slick feature offers considerable entertainment value in mixing ingratiating personalities, stand-up excerpts and serious issues … even if the result ultimately plays more like a high-concept TV special than a “documentary.”

As Hulu continues to bulk up his comedy coffers, the platform announced a new hour from comedian Ralph Barbosa.
The news comes just weeks before Hulu rolls out its ambitious stand-up initiative, which it has cheekily titled “Hularious.” Jim Gaffigan will serve as the brand’s guinea pig, with his new special, Jim Gaffigan: The Skinny, kicking it off Nov. 22. Other hours, from major names like Bill Burr, Sebastian Maniscalco and Roy Wood Jr., will follow. The Barbosa special has not yet been dated, and its focus, at least for now, is being kept under wraps.
Unlike Burr, Gaffigan and Maniscalco, who are all arena-playing vets, Barbosa is considerably greener in his career. In fact, the 28-year-old made his debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in early 2023, and then swiftly kicked off his theater tour, Ralph Barbosa: The Super Cool Ass Tour, the following year. It will be filmed during his top-selling “It Ain’t Right” tour.

Hulu is continuing to double down on stand-up specials.
The streamer will air Chris Distefano’s third stand-up special as it ramps up its moves into comedy.
Distefano’s hour-long special – It’s Just Unfortunate – is exec produced by Jimmy Kimmel.
He joins the likes of Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, Ilana Glazer, Roy Wood Jr., Atsuko Okatsuka and Jessica Kirson, who are bringing their stand-up specials to the Disney-backed streamer as it looks to take on the likes of Netflix by aggressively moving into the genre.
Hulu has also licensed a number of specials from the likes of 800 Pound Gorilla, Comedy Dynamics, and Don’t Tell Comedy.
Last year, Distefano sold out Radio City Music Hall and the Theater at Madison Square Garden. He started his career on MTV’s Guy Code and Girl Code before starring in IFC’s Benders, co-hosting Netflix’s Ultimate Beastmaster and hosting Vice TV’s Super Maximum Retro Show.

Chris Distefano is bringing his comedy to Hulu.
His latest hour, which is being executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, arrives as the streaming service makes an aggressive push into the stand-up arena, elbowing its way into an increasingly frothy market that’s been dominated by Netflix in recent years. It’s Just Unfortunate, as Distefano’s new special is titled, is his third, following previous hours Size 38 Waist and Speshy Weshy at Comedy Central and Netflix, respectively.
The Hulu stand-up initiative, which it’s dubbed “Hularious,” is set to kick off in earnest in November with a special from comedy vet Jim Gaffigan. From there, it will look to distinguish itself from rivals by dropping a new hour each month. “The mantra is very much quality over quantity,” Hulu’s head of scripted content Jordan Helman told THR of the platform’s curated approach. Comedian Chris Fleming has had it with Saturday Night Live. He’s heard that cocaine is back at 30 Rock, according to a video he posted this week on Instagram. If that’s the case, he maintained, where’s the rush? Where’s the excitement? “Let’s see some results then! You’re doing coke to do a Zillow sketch? At least Belushi used to run through a wall!”
If the gang at SNL is going to do coke, he argued, they better be on stage at Wembley Stadium scatting some gibberish nonsense. “You better be Mork & Mindy, Season One if you are on cocaine.”
It’s a crime to do coke simply to be boring or “to bomb at the Weekend Update desk,” he said. If Colin Jost is on coke, Fleming “swears to God” that he’ll carry out some unnamed threat in frustration.

Within Group Therapy’s opening moments, clips from top comedians reveal the struggles often beneath humor’s surface. Statistics on isolation and anguish roll as George Carlin matter-of-factly states society’s failures supporting mental wellness.
We then meet the film’s subjects: Tig Notaro opens up after battling cancer and grief. Gary Gulman discusses depression leading to suicidal thoughts and institutionalization, though medication now helps. Mike Birbiglia speaks of nearly three decades of therapy and loss impacting his craft. Nicole Byer and London Hughes face industry racism and body insecurity.
Director Neil Berkeley brilliantly pairs frank interviews with these risk-takers and others with Neil Patrick Harris’s group therapy, moderated with empathy. Laughter remains, but now shines light on shadows many brave souls face, creating joy for others.

“Dungeons and Drag Queens” star Monét X Change has landed her own variety talk series at “Dimension 20” streamer Dropout.

As Emma (Margaret Cho) grieves her recently deceased dog, her erstwhile coworker Kayla (Missi Pyle) tries to extend a bit of comfort. “My grandma used to say that, once they know they’re yours, they’ll always be with you,” she says. “Even when they’re gone, they’ll find a way to let you know they’re still there.”
It’s the sort of well-meaning, well-worn sentiment that anyone who’s suffered such a tragedy has certainly heard before, and that, depending on the context, might read as trite bullshit or a profound insight. All That We Love takes it as its north star, and turns it into the latter. Neil Berkley’s Group Therapy is a poignant, hilarious and moving exploration of the intersections between comedy, grief and mental illness. Starring a stellar cast of comedians including Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Gulman, Nicole Byer, Mike Birbiglia, London Hughes, Tig Notaro and Atsuko Okatsuka, the film delves into the ways these performers use humor as a coping mechanism and a form of catharsis.
The film kicks off with a darkly comedic clip of George Carlin, setting the tone by discussing suicide and mental health statistics in America. This seamlessly transitions into clips of various comedians opening up about their struggles with mental illness, the medications they take, and the traumas they’ve endured. It’s a stark yet effective way to frame the narrative, immediately drawing viewers into the raw and unfiltered realities these comedians face. Each comedian in the film shares their journey of developing their unique sense of humor,...

“All That We Love” is not, at first brush, a lovable film. Or perhaps the midlife crisis meets coming-of-age drama led by Margaret Cho is too lovable and therefore falls flat for its earnestness?
Cho stars as Emma, an empty nester who realizes just how alone she truly is after the death of her family dog Tanner. Emma is frustrated at work, faced with the return of her ex-husband Andy (Kenneth Choi), and forced to confront the fact that her daughter Maggie (Alice Lee) is relocating to Australia with her boyfriend (Devon Bostick). Basically, Emma is having a bad time. The only bright spot in Emma’s social circle, it seems, is her friendship with Stan (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), who is also dealing with a loss of his own…and a crisis reaction that includes purchasing a motorcycle.
As Stan comforts Emma, she begins to reevaluate the (non-canine) relationships in her life.

"I think stand-up seems wrought with so much insecurity." Hartbeat has revealed the first official trailer for a documentary titled Group Therapy, a film about comedians and mental health. This is premiering in a few weeks at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, hence the trailer showing up now before its debut. Kevin Hart's Hartbeat is a global media company creating entertainment at the intersection of comedy & culture. Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, Group Therapy is a witty exploration of mental health challenges through relatable conversations, striking a balance between depth and levity. "Sharing is therapeutic." Anchored by Harris as a moderator, Group Therapy features humorous conversations with Mike Birbiglia, Nicole Byer, Gary Gulman, London Hughes, Tig Notaro, and Atsuko Okatsuka. Berkeley implements a clever framing of this ensemble narrative as we listen in on the comedians bravely revealing the connections between their professional comedy journeys and mental health struggles. Sounds good!

Comedian and actor Nick Offerman kicked off his Thursday night show at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre with a cheeky song about he was going to “keep it PG-13” for the night. While the sentiment didn’t last too long, the songs sure did.
The show, titled Nick Offerman and Friends vs Climate Crisis, was part of the Netflix is a Joke Fest that has taken over Los Angeles for the last week, and was put on in support of environmental non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council (Nrdc).
A known outdoorsman, Offerman told the crowd he was a “huge fan” of the organization before jumping into his opening song, but not before offering the non-profit a quick suggestion for what the night’s funds should be used towards. “I want to hope they’ll use some of the proceeds from tonight to think tank a flashier name,” Offerman joked with audience.
