Short Film Review: The Dreamcatcher (2023) by Ankit Santra
Image
From the film's synopsis: Inspired by Kafka's ‘The Metamorphosis', a propaganda artist Bihaan traces his journey of becoming a vermin while trying to paint a nude portrait of his lover. As a sense of infidelity penetrates his personal relationships, he is posed with a question- what is morally corrupt- art or the artist?

“The Dreamcatcher” review is part of the Submit Your Film Initiative

After a brief animation sequence, the movie sets in an interview of sorts, where we see Bihaan, an elderly artist seemingly alone, answering the questions of a woman, while remembering his past, when he was working for the animal welfare minister, and particularly his fights with his girlfriend as a young man. Mubi Buys World On Indian Thriller ‘Knock Knock Knock’ From ‘Loev’ Director
Image
Exclusive: Streamer Mubi has bought global rights on Knock Knock Knock, the latest project from Loev director Sudhanshu Saria.

The unconventional pic runs at 40 minutes in length but in the days of duration agnostic platforms these things seem to matter less. The film will debut worldwide on Mubi on September 15.

Starring Santilal Mukherjee and Phuden Sherpa, the pic is a psychological thriller, following a cat and mouse game between Dada, a Bengali man, a crossword designer who is hellbent on cracking the perfect crossword, and a young Nepali boy who decides to interrupt him one morning at the cafe where he usually sits. Friend or foe, Dada has to decide who this stranger is and whether he should let him into his life.

It had its world premiere at Busan last year and European premiere at Tallinn Black Nights. It also won Best Screenplay at the New York Indian Film Festival.

With the majority of the world currently in lockdown thanks to a pandemic, we have come to witness the suspension of civil rights as a means to keep people at home or commute less in order to stop the spread. While everyone understands the concept, it is in times like these we witness the true value of leaders, those unwilling to listen to scientific evidence or those welcoming the suspension of rights which will only manifest their own position of power in their respective country or dominion. It is in the light of a global crisis we may see something far more dangerous come to live, which will still be there when the virus is already gone and forgotten, which is why a movie such as Ilmaz Syed’s first feature film “Hitler Upside Down” can be interpreted as a warning reaching far beyond the borders of its director’s home country of India.
