Following the first album in 2023, Ghibli wo Utau: Sono 2 ("Singing Ghibli Part 2"), the second tribute album of songs from Studio Ghibli works, is set to release in Japan on November 19, 2025. Indeed in our capitalist society, value is defined by authorities such as collectors, gallery owners and auction houses, resulting in art no longer being for the people but for a selected few. In her new satire “Maru”, director Naoko Ogigami (“Ripples”) takes this development and tells the story of an artist who becomes famous over night and without this being his goal. However, besides dealing with the aforementioned issues, she also manages to direct a feature which serves as a story about art in the era of social media and influencers, as well as the overall more significant discussion on the purposes of art as a whole.

Japan’s Kadokawa is set to make a splash at this year’s Hong Kong FilMart with two new titles aimed at the Asian market, both featuring stars with strong regional appeal.

The first offering is the completed film adaptation of “My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999,” based on the popular comic series that has sold 4.5 million copies in Japan. The property has already proven its cross-platform appeal with a successful animation series that gained high ratings on streaming platforms including Crunchyroll and Bilibili.

The film stars Ryuto Sakuma from Starto Entertainment’s band HiHi Jets, previously seen in “Village,” alongside Mizuki Yamashita, a former member of pop group Nogizaka 46 who appeared in “6 Lying University Students.”

The title has already secured distribution in Thailand through Kadokawa Amarin, with negotiations underway for additional territories. Potential buyers at FilMart can catch a market screening on March 19.

The official website for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Yuto Yotsuba (story) and Ryo Ogawa's (art) comedy manga Ya Boy Kongming! (known as Paripi Koumei in Japan) announced that voice actor Mamoru Miyano will appear in the film. Miyano will play Mc Mamo, a host of the music festival “Music Battle Awards 2025,” the main setting of the film's story. In the festival, Takanori Iwata (Exile / Sandaime J Soul Brothers from Exile Tribe), enka singer Kaori Mizumori and hip-hop unit Komorebi appear as themselves. Additionally, dance group Avantgardey teams up with Ryo (played by Win Morisaki in the film) and perform under the unit name “Avantgardey feat. Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, one of the largest international short film festivals in Asia, accredited by the US Academy Awards® held its Award Ceremony which was the closing of the 26th this year. The progress of Asian short filmmaking became clear once more in this year's Ssff & Asia, with the number of quality productions being truly overwhelming. The quality of production for the Japanese ones was, as usually, quite high, with the newest trend, of having popular actors taking the seat of the director, definitely seems to work, through the film of names like Riisa Naka, Win Morisaki and Sota Fukushi. The ones from the Asean countries continue to exhibit the most creativity while touching serious social issues. “Ruthless Blade”, an impressive Chinese animation by Zhang Bo and “Knitting My Heart”, a Korean short with wicked humor by Oh Ji-hyeon were two more titles that stood out.

The West has a tendency to lump horror from East and Southeast Asia into one basic but limiting category. Because of this, someone might write off an entire continent’s contributions to the genre based solely on a few popular movies with similar plots and executions. However, Eric Khoo’s series Folklore highlights — not to mention celebrates — the differences that make each episode’s depicted culture so unique. That’s not to say there isn’t an overall theme here. This anthology show emphasizes a commonality among its stories; every tale of terror draws from the supernatural. More specifically, each self-contained episode is based on a local custom, myth or superstition. And as the second season demonstrates with both flair and potency, defying the past and ignoring tradition has serious consequences.

The protagonist of the story is Taiga Kitamura, a 29-year-old whose efforts to become an actor in Tokyo have hit a wall, as his manager claims that his performances lack soul. At the same time, the young man has already lost his mother when he was young, essentially blaming his father, whose career in rally has taken up most of his time, neglecting him, his brother, and their mother. Neither of the two siblings talk to him anymore, and his pleas for Taiga to visit the rural area where he runs a car repair shop are met with denial, even dismissal on occasion.

It is not very common for a festival to program a 10-episode series, but that is exactly what San Diego Asian Film Festival did, screening the whole “The Real Thing”, Fukada’s adaptation of Mochiru Hoshisato’s comic book. An edited down version of the Nagoya TVproduction screened in Japan in October, while the film was also shown in Cannes and Tokyo Film Festival.

Movies are the best liars money can buy, and the notion of love at first sight might be their greatest fib. Blame the effortless charmers of Classic Hollywood who perfected flirtatious glances, knowing smiles, and batting of the eyes in order to con us into thinking their lives could be ours. What these fantasies ultimately tell us is that new romance could (and should) lead to salvation, the hope for a happy life that settles in nicely with societal expectations.

With its massive runtime, circular story, and repetitive depiction of self-destructiveness, Kôji Fukada’s The Real Thing is the very antithesis to the classic meet-cute scenario. Based on Mochiru Hoshisato’s graphic novel, it was originally produced for Japanese television. The film has been slightly trimmed and spliced together for theatrical audiences at a still-hefty 232 minutes. Thus some of the eccentric charm that made it such a masterpiece of the serial format has vanished.

After landing on our radars with the carefully observed family drama Harmonium, Koji Fukada’s A Girl Missing received a U.S. release from Film Movement last summer and now the distributor has picked up the Japanese auteur’s latest project, the whopping 232-minute drama The Real Thing. Festival opens with physical red carpet and video messages of congratulations from global industry figures.

Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) opened with a physical ceremony on Saturday (October 31) and video messages of support from global industry figures such as Robert De Niro and Christopher Nolan.

Nolan commented: “The fact that in these challenging times you’ve found a way to honour and enjoy watching films on the big screen is a source of inspiration to myself and other filmmakers around the world.”

De Niro said: “We hope TIFF will be a big, big success and we know it will be.

In its now 43rd edition the Nippon Academy-shō Association recognized Asian productions with the Japan Academy Film Prize, an award commonly referred to as the Asian equivalent to the Oscars. The award show, which took place at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan presented some of the best productions from the Asian movie industry with productions such as Shinsuke Saito’s “Kingdom” receiving four nominations and Hideki Takeuchi’s “Fly me to Saitama” topping the list with 12 nominations.

"The entire ocean has begun moving." GKids has unveiled an official Us trailer for the Japanese anime film titled Children of the Sea, which has been playing at a few film festivals last year (after initially opening in Japan in the summer). This is the latest feature made by Japan's Studio 4°C, and is directed by Ayumu Watanabe, with a score by award-winning composer and longtime Studio Ghibli collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The story involves a young girl named Ruka who is drawn into a mystery involving sealife around the world, in which two mysterious water-connected boys are involved. Of course, she falls in love with one of them. Starring the voices of Mana Ashida, Hiiro Ishibashi, Seishû Uragami, and Win Morisaki in the original version. Ready Player One burst out of nowhere and has become a beloved novel, already taught in schools around the country, making Ernest Cline a hero in the very pop culture the novel celebrates. He took his personal Golden Age and wrote an adventure celebrating the icons of the late 1970s and 1980s, the era when computers and video games changed the world, ushering in the Age of the Geek.

Of course it was going to be turned into a movie but the question is could any film essentially capture the brio of the novel, and could anyone secure all the rights necessary to populate the film with the very icons required to make the virtual world of the Oasis plausible? When Warner Bros. won the bidding war, they wisely turned it over to the one man whose name alone would help secure those rights as well as make a faithful film: Steven Spielberg.

Lifelong gaming fan Steven Spielberg goes all-in for motion capture, with much different results than The Adventures of Tintin. It’s an ode to 1980s videogame fads and pop culture that could be re-titled ‘Astounding Adventures in Licensing.’ It’s Star Wars, Tron and Avatar mashed together for young teens, and more interesting than it ought to be.

The 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards aired on Monday, with “Black Panther” and “Stranger Things” taking home the night’s top two prizes.

Marvel’s Wakandan superhero adventure was by far the biggest winner of the year, taking home four golden popcorn trophies overall. Black Panther himself Chadwick Boseman collected two prizes — though he gave away the prize for “Best Hero” to James Shaw, the man who wrestled a gun away from a gunman during the Waffle House shooting earlier this year.

“Stranger Things” won three awards, including for “Best Show” and for performances by Millie Bobby Brown and Noah Schnapp.

Tiffany Haddish hosted the show, which aired Monday night on Viacom networks and taped Saturday at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar. Haddish even took home an award herself for best comedic performance in “Girls Trip.” “Black Panther” racked up four awards, including best movie. Chadwick Boseman received two trophies — for best hero and best movie performance — while Michael B. Jordan nabbed best villain.

MTV has announced that Lena Waithe will receive the honorary Trailblazer Award at the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards, which will be presented on Monday, June 18. The Trailblazer Award recognizes an individual who has made game-changing contributions to the entertainment industry. It was previously awarded to Emma Stone (2012), Emma Watson (2013), Channing Tatum (2014) and Shailene Woodley (2015).

It hasn’t even been out for a week in North America and already, Avengers: Infinity War is in the running for a number of prestigious awards.

We are, of course, referring to the 2018 MTV Movie Awards. Set to take place next month in Los Angeles, today brings forth the official, exhaustive list of nominees, which includes everything from the aforementioned Infinity War to Ryan Coogler’s standalone Black Panther film.

The latter is now in the running for Best Movie, Best Performance in a Movie (Chadwick Boseman) and Best Villain (Michael B. Jordan), among many others, while Warner’s Wonder Woman also received multiple nods for Best Hero (Gal Gadot) and Best Fight Scene.

Hosted by Tiffany Hadish, the MTV Movie & TV Awards is expected to kick off on Monday, June 18th, and we’ve included the full list of nominees for you to peruse below:

Marvel’s “Black Panther” leads the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards nominations with seven nods, including Best Movie and Best Hero and Best Villain for Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa and Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger.

On the TV side, Netflix’s second season of “Stranger Things” leads with six nominations, including for Best Show and Best Performance in a Show for Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven.

“Avengers: Infinity War” may have only just opened, but it’s already up for the Best Movie prize and sports three nominations, including one for Josh Brolin’s Thanos as Best Villain. Other Best Film nominees include “It,” “Girls Trip” and “Wonder Woman.”

Nominated alongside “Stranger Things” for Best Show are “13 Reasons Why,” “Game of Thrones,” “grown-ish” and “Riverdale.”

Continuing in last year’s tradition, the awards categories are gender-neutral and include some fan favorites such as Best Kiss, Best On-Screen Team, Scene Stealer and Most Frightened Performance blending moments from movies and TV.

Emmy award-winner Joel Gallen will executive produce and direct the 2018 ceremony, returning to the show for the first time since 2006. Gallen had previously produced the awards show for 14 years dating back to 1992.

Tiffany Haddish, who is also nominated for her breakout work in “Girls Trip,” will host the MTV Movie & TV Awards, airing on Monday, June 18 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt from the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles.

“Black Panther” and “Stranger Things” have earned the most nominations for the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the cable network announced Thursday.

“Black Panther,” one of the top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time worldwide, leads with seven nominations. It received nods in categories including best movie and best on-screen team, while Chadwick Boseman was nominated for both best performance in a movie and best hero. Additionally, Letitia Wright was nominated in the scene stealer category for her role as Shuri and Michael B. Jordan was nominated in the best villain category for his portrayal of N’Jadaka/Erik Killmonger.

Other movies to earn multiple nominations include “It,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and “Wonder Woman.”

MTV has unveiled nominations for the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, and it looks like Oscar Best Picture winner The Shape of Water and Darkest Hour were totally shut out. However, the pop culture phenomenon known as Black Panther clawed its way to the top with seven nominations. The ceremony is set for June 18 at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles to be hosted by stand-up comedian and Girls Trip breakout Tiffany Haddish (also a nominee this year for Best Comedic Performance). Until last year, the annual ceremony was known as the MTV Movie Awards. Now, the event has gone the Golden Globes route by including television series. And in an effort to challenge the status quo and make sure everyone know this is a “woke” awards show, the ceremony features gender-neutral categories.

Warner Bros. Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, and Village Roadshow Pictures have announced that “Ready Player One” is crossing the $300 million mark at the global box office with $143 million in China.

The companies said Steven Spielberg’s action-adventure surpassesed the milestone Friday as it enters its second weekend in release. The figure makes “Ready Player One” the biggest Warner Bros. release ever in China.

The film debuted on March 29 in the U.S. and grossed $53.7 million domestically in the opening four-day Easter weekend, then took in $15 million more in the next three days. “Ready Player One” also debuted in first place in France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, and Australia. The film is opening in Germany this weekend and Japan on April 20.

The film is set in the year 2045 amid the slums of Ohio with much of humanity using virtual reality to escape the desolation of the real world.

Two of the unsung heroes of Steven Spielberg’s latest blockbuster Ready Player One, are young actors Win Morisaki and Philip Zhao, who play Daito and Sho, respectively. To mark the film’s release we sat down with the talented, entertaining duo.

We discussed with the pair the casting process and what it meant to them to be given a role of this nature – as well as how surreal it still is seeing their face up on the big screen. We also asked what their avatar name would be if they were to play in the Oasis, while Morisaki tells us which video game he excels at best.

Meanwhile Zhao tells us if acting is what he’d now like to do for a living, and Morisaki – a famous singer in Japan – explains whether he plans to continue mixing the two as he progresses in his career.
