“I would describe my aesthetic as Old World trash and treasure,” says Margarita (Anna Baryshnikov), a few minutes into Idiotka. “She’s milking a cow at five, but she needs to be at the ballet at 5:10. Loves a bargain bin.”
As a description of a style, it’s nonsense. As an illustration of an imagined wearer, it’s word salad. And yet there’s something compelling about its quirkiness — which, in its way, makes it a perfect encapsulation of Idiotka. The feature debut by writer-director Nastasya Popov is certainly messy, a mélange of contrasting tones and contradictory ideas. But darned if it isn’t bursting with enough personality to charm you all the same.
For the first act or so, Idiotka presents itself as a sendup of a certain soulless type of content. Margarita’s explaining her look in that very first scene because she’s filming a submission...

The next chapter of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Monster anthology series has gained some significant star power as Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny join the cast as the parents of the Menéndez Brothers, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez. The upcoming season, officially titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story, focuses on the Menéndez brothers, who were convicted of the murders of their parents in 1996.
According to authorities, the brothers murdered their parents to inherit their father’s fortune. However, the brothers say they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse. Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital) and Copper Koch (They/Them) play Lyle Menendez and Erik Menéndez, respectively.
Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin executive produce. The previous chapter of Murphy and Brennan’s anthology, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, reached 1 billion...

When it came to Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, director Carl Franklin pictured a gritty fish tank filled with yellow-green algae and lifeless fish. He wanted to reach audiences on a visceral level, placing viewers in the notorious serial killer’s putrid living room from the victim’s perspective.
“I wanted to create more of a sensory world as opposed to just a set — something that would evoke a certain aroma or a stench, let’s say, rather than aroma,” Franklin tells Rolling Stone.

Carl Franklin was deep into work when he learned of his Emmy nomination — the second in his career — for directing the first episode of Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “I was in New York, as I was doing another pilot on a miniseries, and they knew about it! So someone told me, ‘Hey, man, you’re nominated! And congratulations!'” the director shares with Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I started noticing these texts that were coming in, and then people said, ‘You were nominated for an Emmy!’ And I said, ‘Really?!’ So I hadn’t expected to, so I thought, ‘That’s cool, man, that’s nice.'”
The “Dahmer” opener, “Bad Meat” — which is the only one of the show’s 10 installments that Franklin helmed — presented the director with a very peculiar challenge. The first iteration...

This year’s first-round Primetime Emmy nominations ballot includes a total of 51 Best Limited Series hopefuls. This is down from 2022’s unusually high total of 61, yet still much higher than 2021’s 37, 2020’s 41, and 2019’s 35.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members’ selections can now not be greater than the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be five.
Unlike comedy and drama series, which simply appear on the ballot by name, the limited series submissions include plot descriptions and cast lists. Which of the shows listed below do you think will land in the final lineup on...

Evan Peters, Niecy Nash-Betts and Richard Jenkins are all likely to land Emmy nominations for their performances on Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” But if members of the TV academy go all in on the first iteration of the “Monster” anthology series from co-creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, you shouldn’t be surprised if Rodney Burford Jr., the lead of the show’s most acclaimed episode, also winds up with a bid.
As Tony Hughes, one of the 17 men murdered by infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Burford appears in three of the show’s 10 installments, including the standout sixth outing, “Silenced.” Directed by two-time Emmy winner Paris Barclay, and written by David McMillan and Janet Mock, this episode centers on Hughes, a deaf and gay Black man with big ambitions whose life comes to a tragic halt after he encounters and is killed by Dahmer...

The true crime mini-series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is one of the biggest hits the Netflix streaming service has ever had, so a lot of subscribers have spent a good amount of time watching Evan Peters inhabit the role of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Peters sat in on a panel with co-stars Niecy Nash and Richard Jenkins and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story co-creator Ryan Murphy last Saturday, and during the panel it was revealed that Peters stayed in character for months while making the show.
Four months of prep and six months of shooting were required to bring Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to the screen, and during that time Peters wore weights on his arms and lifts in his shoes to match the real Dahmer’s physicality and did extensive research to get his dialect right. Variety reports that Peters said,...

The promotional train for Dahmer may have started late, but the lack of publicity for the series has seemingly resulted in more interest.
Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story beat Netflix records in its first week on the streaming service.
After just five days available, it secured 196.2 million hours of viewership, allowing it to hit the #1 spot in several countries.
The numbers make Dahmer the highest first week of viewership for a series debut on Netflix.
Granted, the numbers were probably helped by the fact that the series dropped on a Wednesday instead of a Friday.
We'll have more concrete numbers when the show has been available for longer.
The series narrowly beat Inventing Anna, which netted 195.97 million hours viewed.
Squid Game, which became the streamer's most-watched show ever, kicked off with just over 63 million hours viewed.
The series is headlined by Evan Peters (American Horror Story), in a...

Our own Alex Maidy wasn’t very impressed with Netflix’s new limited series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which he gave a 6/10 review. A relative of one of Dahmer’s victims described the show as “cruel“. But Netflix subscribers certainly were curious to check it out. Netflix has announced that Dahmer debuted at #1 on the English TV list with 196.2 million hours viewed, making it the most viewed title on the streaming service this week. The series also broke into the Top 10 in 92 countries around the world. According to Deadline, Dahmer’s “hours viewed” number makes it one of the biggest hits on Netflix – at least since the streamer started reporting those numbers in June of 2021. The only shows that have had more hours viewed when they premiered were Squid Game, All of Us Are Dead, Stranger Things season 4, and Bridgerton season 2. Personally, I think it’s a...

Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix series, Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, dropped on September 23. The show highlights the story of Tracy Edwards, who escaped from serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and heroically ended Dahmer’s unspeakable crimes… only to then commit several himself.
Dahmer, commonly known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” and “Milwaukee Monster,” killed 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991. His horrific murders involved cannibalism, dismemberment and necrophilia.

As the new miniseries retells, Edwards famously led the police to Dahmer’s apartment and all the gruesome evidence in 1991.
During Edwards’ deeply unsettling 1992 testimony, he recalled, “[Dahmer] was listening to my heart [at knifepoint] because at that point he told me he was going to eat my heart.”
Tragically, Edwards’ life took a turn for the worse in the years following. The once-lauded hero was arrested for property damage, theft, bail jumping, failure to...

On September 21, 2022, “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” premiered on Netflix. The latest project co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan stars Emmy winner Evan Peters as the cannibalistic serial killer. The limited series focuses on the infamous serial killer through the lens of his victims and has a starry cast that includes Richard Jenkins, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Molly Ringwald. Audiences are loving the thriller, scoring it at 90 on Rotten Tomatoes, but the critics disagree, giving the Milwaukee Monster show just a 57. So what are some these critics saying?

Held back from critics, presumably so that co-creator Ryan Murphy could protect the viewing experience for audiences without access to Wikipedia, recent television or semi-recent history, Netflix’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is an infuriating hodgepodge. (That’s the last time I’m going to use that full idiotic title, one of several things Netflix brass should have had the wherewithal to prevent.)
One can appreciate the performers in Dahmer — Richard Jenkins and Niecy Nash in particular; Evan Peters despite an excess of familiarity in his turn — and respect that Murphy and co-creator Ian Brennan have tangible and meaningful things to say here, while also feeling that the 10-episode series is haphazardly structured, never finds a happy medium between exploration and expectation, and probably would never have existed if adulation for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story had been more universal.

A relative of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims has spoken out against Netflix’s new thriller, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, for “retraumatising” their family.
The show – based on serial killer Dahmer’s real crimes – stars Mare of Easttown actor Evan Peters as the man also known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” and the “Milwaukee Monster”, who committed the murders and dismemberments of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
Since its arrival on the platform on 22 September, some have found the show’s gruesome scenes nauseating, with many angered viewers believing it romanticises and glorifies the tragic murders.
One courtroom scene has gone viral using a side-by-side comparison to the actual 1992 trial. In it, Rita Isbell (portrayed by DaShawn Barnes), the older sister of 19-year-old victim Errol Lindsey, is seen yelling in agony during her trial statement.

Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story opens not on the titular serial killer but on his neighbor Glenda Cleveland (Niecy Nash), who is unable to enjoy her nightly TV ritual due to the incessant drilling and banging occurring in the apartment next door. Her exasperated expression suggests this issue is not a new one.

Why is Evan Peters so good at playing crazy? The new trailer for Netflix’s limited series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story showcases Peters’ extraordinary ability to get into truly psycho characters.
