Myriad founder Kirk D’Amico and his team will screen the film in the market. Ash Avildsen directs from a screenplay by Avildsen and Alston Ramsay based on the book The Queen Of The Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, And The Making Of An American Legend by Pulitzer Prize winner Jeff Leen.

‘Queen of the Ring’ Review: Emily Bett Rickards Has Star Power in Starry-Eyed Wrestling Biopic
Image
“I can’t sing and I can’t dance,” Mildred Burke tells her future manager, husband, business partner (and later ex-husband and rival) Billy Wolfe. “But I can tell a story and beat some ass.”

What a story, and what an ass-beating. “Queen of the Ring” is a wide-eyed and inspirational biopic about Burke, born Mildred Bliss, who defied gender norms, broke arbitrary laws separating and limiting the participation of all genders in sports, and shattered the glass ceiling. She was a single mother, an entrepreneur and I hope I never get punched as hard as she can punch. At a time when women’s wrestling was outlawed throughout much of the United States, she not only proved it could be done, but also that it could be profitable as hell.

Mildred Burke is played by Emily Bett Rickards, who is best known for playing the hacker Felicity Smoak on the superhero TV series “Arrow.

Atom Egoyan & Bruce Labruce, John Lithgow & Geoffrey Rush, George R.R. Martin, ‘Eephus’, ‘On Becoming A Guinea Fowl’ In Dynamic Post-Oscar Indie Weekend – Specialty Preview
Image
There’s a wave of new and intelligent life at the indie box office this weekend post-Academy Awards after the traditionally slow, slow period for new openings. There have been a smattering of interesting films (Universal Language for one) but things have absolutely picked up with a George R.R. Martin short story on screen, a nursing home creep-out starring John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush, the latest Atom Egoyan film, a duo that landed really well at Cannes, a Bruno Dumont sci-fi, a Bruce Labruce sex romp, an Italian box office hit and more.

Moderate-wide: Vertical opens action fantasy In The Lost Lands on 1,365 screens as the distributor continues a push to dot its schedule with more moderate-wide releases. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and based on a George R.R. Martin short story of the same name, the pic stars Milla Jovovich, Dave Bautista and Arly Jover. Log line: A...

‘Queen of the Ring’ Review: Emily Bett Rickards Brings Soul and Strength to Female Wrestling Biopic
Image
Wrestling pics are having a moment. Last year saw the excellent, if unjustly ignored, The Iron Claw, about the ill-fated Von Erich brothers. Now comes Ash Avildsen’s hugely entertaining, old-fashioned biopic about Mildred Burke. If you don’t know who Burke is (and the vast majority probably don’t), this film aims to correct that. A pioneer of the sport who became the first million-dollar female athlete in history, Burke was a three-time women’s world champion from the 1930s through the 1950s, a time when women’s wrestling wasn’t even legal in most of the country. Her story fairly demands to be told, and Queen of the Ring, which served as the opening night film of the 39th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, largely does it justice.

Based on Jeff Leen’s extravagantly titled 2009 book The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making...

‘Fatale’ Brings Race Into the Erotic Thriller Mix [Sex Crimes]
Image
For all of the murder and crime that occurs in Erotic Thrillers, more often than not, the police are barely present in the subgenre. If the protagonist isn’t a cop, there might be a detective on the margins or a beat cop taking a statement at a crime scene, but more often than not, law enforcement is typically absent.

Fatale upends this convention in part by fusing a stalker/infidelity storyline with a crooked cop plot wherein the jilted woman is also the film’s detective.

The film’s other novel twist, courtesy of screenwriter David Loughery, is that the central pairing is interracial. Loughery, who is white, is no stranger to exploring race in his screenplays: he co-wrote 2008’s Lakeview Terrace, in which Samuel L Jackson is a crooked cop who terrorizes neighbor Patrick Wilson, as well as 2009’s Obsessed, in which Beyonce must defend her marriage from obsessed white woman Ali Larter.

Netflix’s Top Trending Movie Is A Rip-Off Of A Classic 1987 Thriller (Which Is Way Better)
Image
Where to Watch Powered by The 2020 movie Fatale has become Netflix's top trending movie after struggling at the box office. The movie follows a familiar storyline of adultery, stalking, and poor decision-making that mirrors the plot of Fatal Attraction. Fatale's popularity on Netflix can be attributed to a combination of Covid-19-related delays, genre interest, and the streaming service's lack of hit new movies in summer 2023.

Fatale might be Netflix's top trending movie, but the film's sudden surge in popularity doesn't change the fact that it's a rip-off of a classic 1987 thriller. Directed by Deon Taylor and written by David Loughery, who also collaborated on the 2019 thriller The Intruder, Lionsgate's Fatale has a less-than-stellar track record. After bombing at the box office upon its 2020 theatrical release, the Netflix-streaming psychological thriller seems like fare that would fade into obscurity — or at least off of the platform's homepage. Somehow,...

Review: Titans: The Complete Third Season
Image
The live-action Titans series has been flawed from the get-go by presenting us with a Dick Grayson that the writers woefully misunderstand. There is no comic book creator who ever depicted Grayson in this manner so it sets the wrong tone. Its low-budget when created for the short-lived DC Universe streaming service didn’t help.

And yet, it has staggered through three seasons, with a fourth now streaming on HBO Max. Just last week, Warner Home Entertainment released Titans: The Complete Third Season on Blu-ray (no DVD or 4K).

We pick up from the end of season two with the team mourning the death of Donna Troy (Conor Leslie), they are jarred to discover that now Jason Todd (Curran Walters) has been murdered by the Joker. The team, and yes, it’s nice to see them function as a unit for a change, journey to Gotham City to console Bruce...

Titans Season 3 Episode 13 Review: Purple Rain
Franka Potente, Jay Lycurgo, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Brenton Thwaites, Joshua Orpin, and Teagan Croft in Titans (2018)
Did anyone else find the takedown of Scarecrow rather anticlimactic?

Titans Season 3 Episode 13 was a decent season-ender, but there seemed to be untapped potential with the central villain.

There was a lot of simmering tension as we headed into the episode because of Scarecrow's actions, but the team defeated him much quicker than I thought they would.

Maybe we're supposed to believe they work better together, but still, there should have been more desperation in the Titans throughout this final battle for Gotham.

Dick remains one of the worst leaders in the history of TV. Seriously. Gar would have understood if Dick told him Jason was helping in the mission to take down Crane.

Could you imagine Gar tried to attack Jason, and one of them died in the mansion? That would have been yet another problem caused by Dick.

Moving forward, Dick needs to be more of a collaborative member of the Titans.

Brenton Thwaites: The Titans Are 'Cooking With Gas' in Season 3 Finale — But There Will Be Goodbyes

The bad news: The Titans have quite a fight ahead of them, in this Thursday’s Season 3 finale. The good news: As least some sort of future awaits them, since the HBO Max superhero team-up series was just renewed for Season 4.

Though several months had passed between filming the Season 3 finale and him being told about the renewal, series lead Brenton Thwaites says he “had a pretty good feeling” the Titans would fight another day.

Titans Renewed for Season 4!
Brenton Thwaites at an event for Barbie (2023)
Dick Grayson and his band of superheroes will have a lot more crime-fighting to do on HBO Max.

The hit drama has officially been picked up for Season 4.

The renewal became official during DC Fandome over the weekend.

The series follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong.

In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they reunite with old friends and face new threats.

The cast this season has included Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Ryan Potter, Conor Leslie, Curran Walters, Joshua Orpin, Alan Ritchson, Minka Kelly, Damaris Lewis, and Savannah Welch.

Moving the action to Gotham full-time has resulted in a much darker series, pushing all of the characters in new directions -- some to the dark side.

Titans Season 3 Episode 7 Review: 51%
Franka Potente, Jay Lycurgo, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Brenton Thwaites, Joshua Orpin, and Teagan Croft in Titans (2018)
The dynamic between Starfire and Blackfire continues to impress, and it was about time we got some insight into life on Tameron.

Titans Season 3 Episode 7 lifted the lid on the "51%" approach to decision-making on the planet and how it fueled Blackfire's decision to butcher her parents.

The story was tragic, and it was a successful way to characterize Blackfire as this superhero who has always been counted out because she is not the person people wanted on the planet.

On an unpredictable note, it's good to know Blackfire knows she can't rule on the planet alone, and if she finds a way to return, there's a good chance her sister might go along for the ride.

Starfire is a character who has played in the gray area on several occasions, so even she could understand her sister's logic in using the Tameron way to wipe out her parents.

Barbara: Congratulations,...

Titans: Get to Know Blackfire
Image
This article contains Titans spoilers.

Titans Episode 4

As the team continues to grow, Titans episode 4, “Blackfire,” re-introduces us to Starfire’s sister. If you’ve watched the previous season of Titans then you’ll remember her as the epically stylish and nefarious Queen of Tamaran.

While Blackfire (Damaris Lewis) was less of a present threat in season two, now she’s on Earth and, as we learn this week this week, has been behind Starfire’s escalating and ever more violent visions. What she’d actually been experiencing were psychic messages from her sister, who was begging for her help as she had been captured by the US government and imprisoned deep underground. It’s a big surprise as the end of last season saw Blackfire hit Earth with big plans of revenge, but here we see her as a helpless victim and one who has to reach out to...

Titans Season 3 Review: Embracing the Darkness Comes at a Huge Cost
Franka Potente, Jay Lycurgo, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Brenton Thwaites, Joshua Orpin, and Teagan Croft in Titans (2018)
It's been a long road, but Titans Season 3 is less than a week from touching down at its new home on HBO Max.

The transition has been a smooth process, and the look of the show remains a cut above the other superhero shows, so that's a major positive.

But the transition to Gotham City comes at a huge cost to the tone of the show. The series has typically embraced the darkness, but there has always been a comedic lick of humor that allowing for witty one-liners.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Titans Season 3.

After watching five episodes, they are the darkest in the series' history, and the drama rarely stops long enough for the heroes to breathe or share a laugh or two. It's all about moving on to the next plot.

If anything, it highlights the nature of Gotham City to a T, so if...

Titans Season 3 Trailer Brings Red Hood and Possibly a New Joker to HBO Max
Image
HBO Max has revealed the first teaser trailer for Titans season 3. And it sets up an awful lot in a short period of time. Much of the plot for the upcoming season is being kept under wraps but it had already been revealed that villains Scarecrow and Red Hood will be causing trouble for our heroes this time around. Yes, we do get a taste of that but we also, rather intriguingly, may be getting a new take on The Joker as well.

The teaser opens with some intriguing imagery in the dark of night. It is set at a carnival and a Gotham Pd officer has been strung up with a big smile on his face. We then hear a Joker-esque cackle, which seems to tease the Batman villain's arrival in this universe. Beyond that, we got a large batch of collected shots showcasing more of what's to come.

Titans Season 3 Teaser Trailer Finds Superheroes in Danger – When Does It Premiere?
Franka Potente, Jay Lycurgo, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Brenton Thwaites, Joshua Orpin, and Teagan Croft in Titans (2018)
It's been a long wait, but the premiere of Titans Season 3 is in sight.

HBO Max has released a first look teaser for the new season of the popular superhero series, which premieres on Thursday, August 12.

The first three episodes will be available on that date, with new episodes dropping every Thursday after that.

Titans Season 3 is set to wrap on October 21, meaning that it will not be airing multiple episodes every week.

Score, right?

We love HBO Max, but multiple episodes a week takes out a lot of the fun. Having one episode to keep us on our toes for a few months works best in our book!

Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find where they belong.

In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats.

New to Streaming: Pretend It’s A City, Pieces of a Woman, Audrey & More

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options—not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves–each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Audrey (Helena Coan)

Despite her status as one of the most iconic movie stars in history, one can’t help but root for the girl at the center of Audrey, who dreams of nothing more than to find peace and love. The girl is, of course, Audrey Hepburn, a movie star from a time when pictures were made around personas, and a change of hairstyle could easily turn into a global phenomenon. Hepburn’s name conjures visions of diamonds, sophistication, and effortless grace. Perhaps even the girl who had it all if we want to navigate in tropes, but what Helena Coan’s documentary achieves is that it doesn...

‘Fatale’ Review: Swank and Ealy’s Nutty Erotic Thriller Is a Bad Movie, Just Not the One You’re Expecting
Image
Obsession is the marrow of erotic thrillers, from the sublime (“Fatal Attraction”) to the ridiculous (“Obsessed”), the hey-not-so-bad (“Sleeping with the Enemy”) to the very-bad-indeed (“The Boy Next Door”), to the auteur-crafted (Tyler Perry’s “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”) to the Netflix-knockoff (“Fatal Affair”). This sub-genre is so abundant that in “Fatale,” its latest victim (an appropriately jittery Michael Ealy) once played the unhinged baddie in another film about physical intimacy gone very much awry (“The Perfect Guy”).

That said, despite the ample availability of films that are built on the concept of “guilty pleasures” and delight in unspooling wacky-crazy, sex-mad, unhinged freakfests, the telling of their stories can contain all the freshness of data entry. We have someone attractive who’s blessed with an equally attractive spouse, a good job, a lovely home, maybe some cute kids, and then they to decide to bone someone they...

‘Fatale’ Review: Hilary Swank Is Michael Ealy’s Fatal Attraction
Image
Offering melodramatic thrills very much in the “Fatal Attraction” mode, “Fatale” presents Michael Ealy as a married L.A. sports agent whose first-time fall off the fidelity wagon unluckily proves to be with one hell of a “woman scorned.” Its appeal to African-American audiences furthered by villainess Hilary Swank’s character being a crooked cop, this is a glossy, formulaic exercise handled with enough finesse by director Deon Taylor to make for a diverting night’s watch, if not much more. While it won’t likely turn the Covid-era box office slump around in Lionsgate’s Dec. 18 release on 1,000-plus theatrical screens, the microwave popcorn should commence popping once it hits PVOD Jan. 8.

Derrick Tyler (Ealy) has it all, to a lifestyle-fantasy degree: Hanging out with star athletes he represents at the successful L.A. agency he founded with best friend Rafe (Mike Colter); living in a spectacular hillside house,...

Fatale Review: Deon Taylor Serves Up a Greatest Hits of the 90s Thriller
Filmmaker Deon Taylor has made a career out of genre-bending thrillers, and Fatale is an exclamation point on his recent output. Michael Ealy plays Derrick, a successful sports agent suspicious that his wife (Damaris Lewis) may be unfaithful. One night in Las Vegas with his pals––business partner and best friend Rafe (Mike Colter) included––he makes a mistake: he has a one night stand.

Days later, back at home, Derrick is forced to fight off an intruder in the middle of the night. When the cops respond to the break-in, who is the detective on the case? The woman he slept with in Vegas! And, of course, Detective Valerie Quinlan (Hilary Swank) has problems all her own. Things get crazier from there, moving at a brisk clip that has marked most of Taylor’s work. This kind of packed genre programmer feels more special now than ever. Watching talented...

Fatale Trailer Locks Hillary Swank & Michael Ealy in a Dangerous Game This Christmas
Image
Lionsgate has released the trailer for Fatale. The psychological thriller stars Hillary Swank and Michael Ealy. The Intruder director Deon Taylor helmed the upcoming movie from a screenplay by David Loughery. The studio had originally planned to have Fatale out in October of this year, but the public health crisis put a stop to that. Instead, Lionsgate will premiere the movie on December 18th in select theaters.

After a wild one-night stand, Derrick (Michael Ealy), a successful sports agent, watches his perfect life slowly disappear when he discovers that the sexy and mysterious woman he risked everything for, is a determined police detective (Hilary Swank) who entangles him in her latest investigation. As he tries desperately to put the pieces together, he falls deeper into her trap, risking his family, his career, and even his life. Fatale is a suspenseful and provocative psychological thriller and an unpredictable game of cat...

Franka Potente, Jay Lycurgo, Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Brenton Thwaites, Joshua Orpin, and Teagan Croft in Titans (2018)
As we eagerly await more news on “Titans” Season 3, HBO Max just teased us with the first look at Jason Todd’s Red Hood supersuit.

Currently in production, Season 3 of the DC series will mark the first time the individual Red Hood costume will ever be seen in a live-action production, according to HBO Max.

Created by costume designer Laura Jean (“Lj”) Shannon, Jason Todd (Curran Waters) will wear the cool new threads as his Red Hood persona in the upcoming season — after his stint as the new Robin, that is.

Season 1 and 2 of “Titans” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting Nov. 1, having previously streamed on the DC Universe platform before it stopped making original content in September. No premiere date has been set yet for Season 3.

“Titans” premiered in 2018 as the first DC Universe original series. Along with Red Hood, returning characters include Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites); Kory Anders,...
