If you’re the type who runs from family movies and enjoy films with more force, more grit, and that don’t give you any lessons (those movies where you learn absolutely nothing), “Novocaine” is going to appeal to you.
Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, “Novocaine” is a crazy movie starring Jack Quaid that takes us on an action delirium about a man with a special characteristic: he is incapable of feeling pain.
If you like wild movies that seek more of an action and joke whirlwind while avoiding any reflection, “Novocaine” is one of those movies created precisely for that purpose and avoiding everything that doesn’t have to do with entertainment.
Philosophical reflections: zero.
Plot
Nate is a bank employee with a bland and monotonous life until the girl of his dreams, Cherry, spills boiling coffee on his hand and discovers his great secret: Nate cannot feel pain.

Dennis Quaid couldn't be prouder of his son, fellow actor Jack Quaid. The father recently praised Jack for topping the box office last weekend with his new action movieNovocaine.
Speaking with People to promote his new Paramount+ series Happy Face, Quaid confirmed that he had spoken to his son about the movie's success the night before the interview. "I just talked to him last night. His movie's no. 1. I mean, that's incredible, really great," the actor remarked. "He certainly deserves it. He's just getting started. You haven't seen nothing yet when it comes to him."Novocaine opened in theaters last weekend, where it topped the domestic box office with $8.8 million. Unfortunately, Novocaine's No. 1 opening was partially overshadowed by the fact that it was the lowest-grossing weekend so far of 2025 with a total box office haul of $55 million.

Actor Jack Quaid was recently asked what his ideal role would be while participating in a Reddit Ama t to promote his newly released action-comedy flick, Novocaine.
Interestingly enough, Quad revealed that he wants to star in a BioShock movie, as that's his favorite game. Perhaps the timing of this reveal is not so coincidental as Netflix is currently working on just that.
"I would actually love to be in a live action adaptation of Bioshock - one of my favorite games of all time. I think there's such a rich lore to that game that could be explored in a TV or movie adaptation."
"I've seen people say that I look like Max Payne, and when I've looked at the box art, even I did a double-take. I love Rockstar's games, but unfortunately I've never played that one - it's next on the list, for sure."

Jack Quaid's new action movie, Novocaine, has officially secured the number one spot in its opening weekend at the box office in what is turning out to be a very disappointing month for theatrical releases.
According to Variety, Novocaine's $8.7 million opening took the top spot at the box office, knocking Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 down to second place. Despite earning the top spot, Novocaine's opening weekend haul fell a bit short of the $10 million it was projected to make and also holds the unfortunate distinction of being one of the lowest-grossing movies to earn the number one spot in its opening weekend since the pandemic. However, box office returns are down across the board, as the latest weekend is one of the worst of 2025, with all films grossing just $52 million. However, Novocaine appears to be on track to make a decent profit, as the film cost just $18 million to make.

Updated, Sunday Am Writethru: Thank God for Snow White next weekend, right?
Who knew with that movie’s controversy we’d be saying that!? However, the industry should be thankful: If Snow White pulls off a $50 million-plus opening, that’s a respectable bump for what is a barren desert of a business right now. Current estimates show that this weekend is in fact the lowest grossing at the domestic box office year-to-date with around $54.7M for all films, lower than Super Bowl Weekend ($55.8M). How is that possible during a spring break with kids off?
Rachel Zegler in ‘Snow White’
We caught Snow White yesterday, and let’s just saw it’s a solid Disney movie with great songs from Oscar winners Pasek and Paul and great turns by Rachel Zegler in the title role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. The Marc Webb-directed Snow White is every...

Jack Quaid returns to the big screen with his role in the new movieNovocaine, now playing in theaters. Heading into the film's opening weekend, its box office performance is looking solid with its Thursday preview numbers.
Per Variety, Novocaine has made $1.75 million in Thursday previews at the box office. These numbers come ahead of what is projected to be a total weekend haul of $8 million to $10 million. This will likely put the film ahead of Robert Pattinson's Mickey 17, which is projected to earn $8 million to $9 million, marking a drop of 55% to 60% in its second weekend in theaters.
Overall, this will be a very quiet weekend for movie theaters, possibly setting a new low for the year so far. Also opening will be Black Bag, the new spy thriller starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Though the movie has earned a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, it made $850K...

Last month, we got the first of the 2025 movie superheroes to arrive as the new Captain America threw his shield down the hallway of the multiplex (and hopefully “konked” the Red Hulk). Now we’ve got a few weeks until the second “wave” washes up with those Thunderbolts, so what will tide the fans over till then, eh? How about a mild-mannered guy who doesn’t don spandex, fly, or even punch holes in concrete walls? Yes, he doesn’t have a real “super power,” but he’s got a lil’ “something special” that sets him apart from us. You may just figure out “his deal” by his nickname, which also happens to be the title of this new (not from a graphic novel or video game) action comedy thriller, so let’s give Novocaine a shot.

After Significant Other and Villains, it should be safe to assume that directing duo Dan Berk and Robert Olsen wouldn’t be interested in helming a feature that fits neatly into a tidy, uniform box. That, of course, means there’s more to Novocaine than a straightforward actioner centered around a hapless everyman thrust into a high stakes gauntlet. Berk and Olsen elevate this simple setup with their genre sensibilities, resulting in an action-splatstick hybrid that brings the pain to absurdly violent, entertaining highs.
Novocaine begins with an introduction to the world’s least likely action hero, Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid). Nate is an unflappably pleasant fellow with a strict morning routine of lunch prep and breakfast smoothies before heading off to his job as an assistant manager at a bank. His plucky but sheltered existence stems from growing up with Cipa, a dangerous disorder that comes with a shorter...

The Boys star Jack Quaid is going to extremes to promote his new movie. The actor gets battered and bruised while sitting courtside at a Los Angeles Clippers game in a brilliant marketing stunt for Novocaine.
In the short clip shared by Pop Crave on X, Quaid can be seen watching the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Sacremento Kings alongside his Novocaine co-star Amber Midthunder. Talk about a brutal press tour!
Jack Quaid appeared at the Los Angeles Clippers game against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday to promote his new film “Novocaine” with a slew of fake injuries that got progressively worse as the game went on.
In “Novocaine,” Quaid stars as Nate, a mild-mannered bank executive who can not feel any physical pain due to a rare genetic condition. When his co-worker and love interest, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), is kidnapped during a bank robbery, Nate must use his “super power” to rescue her. The film also stars Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel and Matt Walsh.
In a fun nod to the film’s premise, Quaid’s NBA courtside appearance featured the actor getting progressively more injured each time the camera panned to him. Like the character though, the wounds did not effect his good time. In a video posted to X by Pop Crave,...

Jack Quaid stars in Novocaine, which is arriving in cinemas this month. Here’s the final trailer for the film.
Jack Quaid has enjoyed a career surge in the last few years, powered by the success of Amazon’s satirical superhero series The Boys. The actor has retooled his performance as Hughie Campbell in the show into a series of fun variations on the ‘ordinary guy with a big heart’ in a number of movies, especially ones like Companion where he subverts that approach to add a more sinister edge to his character.
In Novocaine, though, it looks as though we’re going to see Quaid return to this everyman archetype, this time with a focus on action. Quaid plays Nathan Caine, a chap who, thanks to a rare disorder, can’t feel pain. Hey, that rhymes.

"Be careful dude – you can still die." Opening in theaters this week is this crazy fun action comedy about a guy who can't feel any pain. Paramount has revealed the final official trailer for Novocaine, from directors Dan Berk & Robert Olsen. This is also being released under the title Mr. No Pain in Europe. Meet Nathan Caine. He feels no pain. When the girl of his dreams (played by Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nate turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back. Jack Quaid stars as Nate Caine (a similar name to "novocaine" obviously) with Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, Lou Beatty Jr., Van Hengst, Conrad Kemp, Jacob Batalon. Early reviews are good so far saying this does offer something more than just another action-filled remix, with the story going to wild & wacky places yet still satisfying viewers.

‘Novocaine’ Review: An Obscure Medical Condition Turns Jack Quaid Into World’s Unlikeliest John Wick
You wouldn’t necessarily think it from the damage he sustains over the course of “Novocaine,” but Nathan Caine ranks among the most risk-averse action heroes the genre has ever seen. That’s because the junior manager of a San Diego bank has a rare disorder known as congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (or Cipa). One cut could have life-threatening consequences, if not felt and dealt with quickly enough. So it’s kind of a big deal when normally hyper-cautious “Novocaine” (as the other kids called Nathan at school) goes into berserker mode to rescue his crush from bank robbers.
Cipa is a real thing, affecting fewer than one in 100 million people. Technically, that means screenwriter Lars Jacobson is the insensitive one here, not Nathan. If that bothers you, don’t buy a ticket. If it doesn’t, well, Paramount is doing sneak previews on March 8, a week before the film opens wide.

Action films are like any other genre: in order to get made and make audiences interested, ya gotta have a gimmick. Whether that gimmick is an everyman stuck inside a high-rise building with thieves on Christmas, or a bus that can't go below 50mph, or a man with a particular set of skills, or a grieving widower diving back into a comic book-esque world of assassins to get revenge for his murdered puppy, it stands to reason that the gimmick is what gets noticed first about any given action movie. "Novocaine" has one hell of a gimmick in that regard: its hero is a young man named Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid), who was born with a genetic condition that means he's not able to feel the sensation of pain. Upon hearing about his condition, his love interest, Sherry (Amber Midthunder), excitedly observes that this essentially makes him a superhero, an...

We’re used to heroes who can take a licking and keep on ticking, but Novocaine takes action-movie invulnerability to brutal comic extremes. Starring Jack Quaid as a timid not-quite-everyman on the trail of the bank robbers who kidnapped his would-be girlfriend, the film offers little novelty beyond its hero being a human pin cushion, but it’s stuffed with enough creative violence to make even jaded action fans squirm in their seats.
Nathan Caine (Quaid) can’t feel pain. Born with a rare genetic disorder, the mild-mannered bank staffer lives a life of careful risk-aversion: His shower knob has a stopper to keep the water temperature below scalding, his apartment’s sharp corners are buffered with split tennis balls, and he exclusively consumes a liquid diet lest he chew off his own tongue without realizing it.

The Boys star Jack Quaidhas no doubt gotten used to taking his fair share of punishment after sharing the screen with Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher and Antony Starr’s Homelander. The actor has clearly decided that receiving a beatdown suits him, taking the lead in this year’s action thriller comedy Novocaine, with the first reactions revealing that the action outing could be one of the best installments in the genre for some time.
Novocaine is a unique twist on the action-comedy, with Quaid’s character, the mild-mannered Nathan Caine, using his rare condition, Cip, which means he cannot feel pain, to rescue his girlfriend after she’s taken hostage during a bank robbery. Taking to X/Twitter, @theBurk3nator heaped praise on the premise, and says Quaid “brings an impressive level of charm and likability.”

In Dan Berk and Robert Olsen's new action comedy Novocaine, Jack Quaid stars mild-mannered introvert Nathan Caine, who must save his girlfriend after she's taken hostage in a bank robbery. It sounds like a simple premise, but when you add in the fact that Quaid has Cip (congenital insensitivity to pain), things get nuts in the new film, which is slated to be released on March 14 by Paramount Pictures.
A new poster for the movie was just released today (seen below), highlighting all the intense punishment Quaid goes through. Not only is he smashed up against a pane of broken glass, but his one hand is bruised and bloody, and the other looks like it has suffered a severe amount of damage, including a bit of flayed skin. In addition to Quaid, Novocaine also stars Amber Midthunder as his girlfriend Shari, as well as appearances by Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon,...

Douglas Hodge and Betty Gabriel are among the recruits for the new Jack Ryan film, starring John Krasinski. More here.
The cast of the new Jack Ryan movie is beginning to expand, with filming presumably now not too far away.
John Krasinski follows Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine by playing Ryan on the big screen. In his case, he’s had a fair amount of practice too, having played Ryan on the hit television series, that’s cunningly entitled Jack Ryan.
It may well be that the new film, which is being backed by Amazon MGM, will also go by that name as well. It’s been known for a while that John Krasinski, Sienna Miller, Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly are in the ensemble.
Now, some further additions have also been announced. Betty Gabriel, JJ Feild, Max Beesley and Douglas Hodge are signing on the dotted line.
