Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, “Novocaine” is a crazy movie starring Jack Quaid that takes us on an action delirium about a man with a special characteristic: he is incapable of feeling pain.

Plot

Nate is a bank employee with a bland and monotonous life until the girl of his dreams, Cherry, spills boiling coffee on his hand and discovers his great secret: Nate cannot feel pain.

Expected to ship in June, the album is limited to 1,200 across five color variants.

According to Variety, Novocaine's $8.7 million opening took the top spot at the box office, knocking Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 down to second place. Despite earning the top spot, Novocaine's opening weekend haul fell a bit short of the $10 million it was projected to make and also holds the unfortunate distinction of being one of the lowest-grossing movies to earn the number one spot in its opening weekend since the pandemic. However, box office returns are down across the board, as the latest weekend is one of the worst of 2025, with all films grossing just $52 million. However, Novocaine appears to be on track to make a decent profit, as the film cost just $18 million to make.

Jack Quaid has enjoyed a career surge in the last few years, powered by the success of Amazon’s satirical superhero series The Boys. The actor has retooled his performance as Hughie Campbell in the show into a series of fun variations on the ‘ordinary guy with a big heart’ in a number of movies, especially ones like Companion where he subverts that approach to add a more sinister edge to his character.

The strong score is in line with other recent film releases featuring the actor. Earlier this year, Quaid co-starred alongside Sophie Thatcher in the horror thriller Companion, a movie that holds a Certified Fresh score of 94%. Quaid was last seen on the big screen in 2023 with his role in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, the Oscar-winning blockbuster that has an approval rating of 93%. You wouldn’t necessarily think it from the damage he sustains over the course of “Novocaine,” but Nathan Caine ranks among the most risk-averse action heroes the genre has ever seen. That’s because the junior manager of a San Diego bank has a rare disorder known as congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (or Cipa). One cut could have life-threatening consequences, if not felt and dealt with quickly enough. So it’s kind of a big deal when normally hyper-cautious “Novocaine” (as the other kids called Nathan at school) goes into berserker mode to rescue his crush from bank robbers.

Cipa is a real thing, affecting fewer than one in 100 million people. Technically, that means screenwriter Lars Jacobson is the insensitive one here, not Nathan. If that bothers you, don’t buy a ticket. If it doesn’t, well, Paramount is doing sneak previews on March 8, a week before the film opens wide.

Action films are like any other genre: in order to get made and make audiences interested, ya gotta have a gimmick. Whether that gimmick is an everyman stuck inside a high-rise building with thieves on Christmas, or a bus that can't go below 50mph, or a man with a particular set of skills, or a grieving widower diving back into a comic book-esque world of assassins to get revenge for his murdered puppy, it stands to reason that the gimmick is what gets noticed first about any given action movie. "Novocaine" has one hell of a gimmick in that regard: its hero is a young man named Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid), who was born with a genetic condition that means he's not able to feel the sensation of pain. We’re used to heroes who can take a licking and keep on ticking, but Novocaine takes action-movie invulnerability to brutal comic extremes. Starring Jack Quaid as a timid not-quite-everyman on the trail of the bank robbers who kidnapped his would-be girlfriend, the film offers little novelty beyond its hero being a human pin cushion, but it’s stuffed with enough creative violence to make even jaded action fans squirm in their seats.

Nathan Caine (Quaid) can’t feel pain. The Boys star Jack Quaidhas no doubt gotten used to taking his fair share of punishment after sharing the screen with Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher and Antony Starr’s Homelander. The actor has clearly decided that receiving a beatdown suits him, taking the lead in this year’s action thriller comedy Novocaine, with the first reactions revealing that the action outing could be one of the best installments in the genre for some time.

Novocaine is a unique twist on the action-comedy, with Quaid’s character, the mild-mannered Nathan Caine, using his rare condition, Cip, which means he cannot feel pain, to rescue his girlfriend after she’s taken hostage during a bank robbery. Taking to X/Twitter, @theBurk3nator heaped praise on the premise, and says Quaid “brings an impressive level of charm and likability.”

In Dan Berk and Robert Olsen's new action comedy Novocaine, Jack Quaid stars mild-mannered introvert Nathan Caine, who must save his girlfriend after she's taken hostage in a bank robbery. It sounds like a simple premise, but when you add in the fact that Quaid has Cip (congenital insensitivity to pain), things get nuts in the new film, which is slated to be released on March 14 by Paramount Pictures.

A new poster for the movie was just released today (seen below), highlighting all the intense punishment Quaid goes through. Not only is he smashed up against a pane of broken glass, but his one hand is bruised and bloody, and the other looks like it has suffered a severe amount of damage, including a bit of flayed skin. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan star John Krasinski has shared an image of himself as the titular character in the upcoming movie. While the Amazon Prime Video show ended in 2023, last fall it was announced that the streamer, Krasinski, and the show's producers were moving ahead with a film. And the movie is already in production in Dubai, according to Krasinski's Instagram post.

The image sees Krasinski as Ryan dressed in black while holding a rifle, standing with the city behind him. The actor wrote:

Earlier today, Amazon MGM Studios officially announced the start of production on their upcoming untitled Jack Ryan feature film, which will return 4x Primetime Emmy-nominee John Krasinski to the title role, and will serve as a sequel to the acclaimed Prime Video television series.

Andrew Bernstein is helming the feature, with a screenplay from Krasinski and Aaron Rabin. Bernstein previously helmed three episodes in season two of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, while Rabin penned five of the six episodes in the final season. Both also served as executive producers on their respective seasons.

In addition to Krasinski (The Office; A Quiet Place; 13 Hours) as the titular Jack Ryan, returning cast members will include Wendell Pierce (The Wire; Suits; Superman) as James Greer, Michael Kelly (House of Cards; Dawn of the Dead; Secret Invasion) as Mike November, and Betty Gabriel (Get Out; Upgrade; Defending Jacob) as Elizabeth Wright.

It was reported late last year that Sienna Miller will star alongside the former star of The Office in the upcoming film adaptation, which is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Now, Deadline is reporting that four more actors have joined the Tom Clancy-inspired thriller.

Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, JJ Feild and Betty Gabriel have all joined Jack Ryan along with Miller. Gabriel is also a former cast member who appeared in the third and fourth seasons of the series. Amazon will be producing in association with Paramount Pictures and Skydance. Additionally, Krasinski and Allyson Seeger are producing via their Sunday Night production, and Andrew Form is also on board this project as a producer.

The cast of the new Jack Ryan movie is beginning to expand, with filming presumably now not too far away.

John Krasinski follows Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine by playing Ryan on the big screen. In his case, he’s had a fair amount of practice too, having played Ryan on the hit television series, that’s cunningly entitled Jack Ryan.

It may well be that the new film, which is being backed by Amazon MGM, will also go by that name as well. It’s been known for a while that John Krasinski, Sienna Miller, Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly are in the ensemble.

Now, some further additions have also been announced. Betty Gabriel, JJ Feild, Max Beesley and Douglas Hodge are signing on the dotted line.
