Ever since it was announced in 2018, Monkey Man had a difficult journey to its release. Dev Patel’s directorial debut received setbacks due to covid restrictions, budgetary issues, and a broken hand of the writer/director/star (this last issue resulted in a change of choreography to ensure Patel could deliver fight scenes one-handed.)

Netflix acquired the film for worldwide distribution, a move which would have buried the film courtesy of a dreadful algorithm, yet that scenario was avoided courtesy of filmmaker Jordan Peele. Monkey Man star Dev Patel opened up about the multiple challenges that he and the crew faced during the production of his feature directorial debut.

As part of Monkey Man’s promotions, Patel recently conducted an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit, where he got to answer curious fans’ questions about his upcoming action thriller movie. When asked how stressful making the project was as an actor and first-time director, the Oscar nominee described the filmmaking experience as "the most demanding thing" he has ever done in his life. He also listed down some of the difficult things they encountered while filming during the pandemic. These include: using his phone and Go Pros to shoot scenes, since most of their camera equipment had broken down; and gluing back broken tables from stunts due to prop shortages.

Actor/director Dev Patel opens this two-minute look behind the scenes of Monkey Man by quoting a quote from the film: “The pain will leave you once it’s finished teaching you.” Patel, who made his feature film directing debut with the action thriller, learned that lesson the hard way, breaking his foot and his hand during shooting.

“I poured all of myself into this. Every frame, every beat, every detail…and it’s been a ferocious process making this film,” explained the Oscar nominated actor.

Following its South by Southwest (SXSW) premiere, Universal Pictures’ Monkey Man has received a brand-new trailer starring Dev Patel in his feature-length directorial debut.

The Monkey Man trailer shows the Oscar-nominated actor channeling his inner John Wick in his portrayal of a young man desperately avenging his mother’s death. The video also provided a glimpse of the film’s thrilling and brutal action sequences involving Patel’s character, as he hunts down the men responsible for his irreversible anguish. This marks the Slumdog Millionaire star’s first major movie as the lead, after three years since leading David Lowery’s fantasy adventure film The Green Knight for A24.

Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who, after the horrific land dispute massacre of his childhood village, was left orphaned on the streets of the fictional city of Yatana. Kid now makes a meagre living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he allows himself to be beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
