Alamo Drafthouse Opens ‘Time Capsule’, A Year-Long Retrospective Of Classic Films
Image
We remember the Alamo. Now, the Alamo Drafthouse is going to remember for you.

The movie chain is undertaking a year-long “Time Capsules” program, featuring curated films from 1974 to 1999.

Alamo Time Capsules is “a yearlong trek back through time that revisits both beloved blockbusters and forgotten favorites spanning six landmark cinema years — 1999, 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979, and 1974. Title collections will span six to eight weeks and, rather than act as a ‘top ten list’ of films, instead will tell their part of the story of that year in cinema, culture, and history,” the chain said in its announcement.

The retrospective runs all year and will include nearly 150 different selections. Time Capsule collections will include special merchandise, custom Alamo Drafthouse menus, and special events.

First up: the year 1999 begins with films like Being John Malkovich, The Blair Witch Project, The Iron Giant, Cruel Intentions, Jawbreaker, The Matrix, and Run Lola Run.

“My first job was...

Image
Cinema chain Alamo Drafthouse is launching Alamo Time Capsules, a retrospective film series, to kick off the new year. With screenings slated throughout the entirety of 2024, this will be the chain’s largest retrospective series yet.

Starting Jan. 5, each of Alamo Drafthouse’s forty locations across the U.S. will screen a selection of approximately 150 different films from the years 1999, 1994, 1989, 1984, 1979 and 1974 — chosen for being landmark years in cinema history. Piggy trailer: Spanish horror film coming to Alamo Drafthouse theatres in October
Image
After catching a lot of positive attention from its screening at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the Spanish-language horror film Piggy will be screening at Fantastic Fest this weekend… and on October 7th, the movie will be receiving a nationwide release at Alamo Drafthouse theatres! It will then be getting a VOD release as well. In anticipation of the Alamo Drafthouse release, a trailer for Piggy has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Directed by Carlota Pereda, Piggy has the following synopsis:

With the summer sun beating down on her rural Spanish town, Sara hides away in her parent’s butcher shop. A teenager whose excess weight makes her the target of incessant bullying, she flees a clique of capricious girls who torment her at the town pool, only to stumble upon them being brutally kidnapped by a stranger, who drives off with them in his van.

‘Piggy’ Trailer: The Unholy Alliance of ‘Fat Girl’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw’ That Wowed Sundance
Image
One of the most buzzed-about horror movies of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival was Carlota Pereda’s “Piggy,” about an overweight teenager bullied by her peers until a serial killer rolls into town and sows chaos. Sara, played by Laura Galán, begins to learn about the identity of the killer and wonders whether she should reveal it to her community, with the coming-of-age Spanish-French horror playing out like an unholy convergence of Catherine Breillat’s “Fat Girl” and Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Magnet Releasing opens the movie at Alamo Drafthouse theaters nationwide on October 7 before a VOD premiere, and IndieWire has the exclusive trailer below.

Per the official synopsis, with the summer sun beating down on her rural Spanish town, Sara hides away in her parent’s butcher shop. A teenager whose excess weight makes her the target of incessant bullying, she flees a clique of capricious girls...

Blockbuster ‘Rrr’ Is Back, This Time At Arthouses In A New Move For Indian Film – Specialty Preview
Image
S.S. Rajamouli’s Rrr, a huge hit when it opened in March, is dipping back into the U.S. market in a novel and, so far, successful bid by distributors to expand the reach of the Telugu period drama beyond the traditional audience for Indian film.

Originally out March 23 on 1,000 screens, wide for an Indian release Stateside, Rrr (Rise! Roar! Revolt!) grossed more than 14 million in North America, and over 140 million globally. In India, the epic story of two friends who discover they’re on opposite sides of India’s struggle for independence (Deadline review here), smashed records to set the best opening day for a local film ever. That was director Rajamouli topping his own previous record-holder in the market, 2017’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. See Rajamouli interview.

Indian films are a staple of the U.S. box office but rarely stick around for more than a week.

Image
Alamo Drafthouse is partnering with distributor FilmRise to bring Prince’s concert film Sign O’ The Times back to the big screen for its 35th anniversary.

The new 4K presentation will run at 24 locations in New York, LA and nationwide starting April 1. (See trailer below.)

“Sign O’ The Times is, without a doubt, one of Prince’s greatest achievements as an artist,” says Alamo Drafthouse film programmer Jake Isgar. “We’re thrilled at the opportunity to be a part of preserving and presenting his musical legacy.”

The film captures the late singer songwriter at the height of his most prolific period, following the platinum-selling double album of the same name.

The screening is part of Austin-based Alamo Drafthouse’s ‘Play It Loud’ limited series, running through March and into April with classic rock/pop performance films including Josie and the Pussycats, A Hard Day’s Night, and Led Zeppelin’s The Song Remains the Same.
