Image
Horror fans may want to check out the upcoming genre film Whistle. Starring Dafne Keen in the lead role, the film won't be released until next year, but its first teaser trailer has just been released.

Comparable to something like Final Destination meets The Ring, Whistle is about a group of friends trying to escape death after they discover a cursed, ancient whistle. Its premise is a bit unusual, but the teaser reveals just how freaky the film could very well be, filled with some intense and horrific moments. The preview also touts how the film comes from the executive producers of The Monkey, Evil Dead Rise, and Longlegs. Check out the video below.

Dafne Keen Summons Ancient Evil in ‘The Whistle’
Image
British director Corin Hardy has shared the first chilling teaser for The Whistle, a supernatural horror set to arrive in cinemas early next year. Released by IFC Films, the teaser offers a brief but unsettling glimpse into a teenage curse rooted in ancient myth, with a cursed Aztec death whistle summoning a sequence of fatal encounters for the unlucky souls who blow it.

Starring Logan and Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Dafne Keen, alongside Sophie Nélisse, Sky Yang, Jhaleil Swaby, Ali Skovbye, Percy Hynes White, Michelle Fairley and Nick Frost, The Whistle follows a group of high school outcasts who stumble upon a strange relic during a seemingly harmless detour. Their curiosity proves fatal. Once activated, the artefact emits a sound so horrific that it acts as a summoning cry for their own deaths, which then stalk them one by one.

The script, penned by Owen Egerton, leans into familiar territory for horror audiences,...

IFC and Shudder have finally unveiled the first trailer for the feature, directed by Corin Hardy (The Nun) and starring Logan and Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Dafne Keen, and the result is beyond eerie. Whistle is led by Keen, a former child actor who made her breakthrough role as Laura (X-23) in the critically acclaimed MCU film Logan. She reprised this fan-favorite role in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. Teaser Trailer for 'The Whistle' Horror About a Creepy Death Whistle
Image
"If you hear the whistle's scream, dying is not a choice..." Holy crap this looks scary! I do not want to hear this whistle... IFC Films has unveiled an early teaser trailer for a scary new horror film titled The Whistle, which is finally ready to hit theaters. It's currently scheduled to open sometime in early 2026 - the final date isn't announced yet. A misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object – an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down. So it's kind of like The Ring? And also a bit of Final Destination? But this death whistle is creepy as hell! Scary design, and I bet the sound is even scarier. Glad they don't reveal that in the teaser! The Whistle stars Dafne Keen, Sophie Nélisse, Sky Yang,...

Watch the First 5 Minutes of ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2
Image
Best friends Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) ended the first season of Firefly Lane with their 30-year friendship seemingly severed. Season 2 picks up by heading to the past, when the two were teenagers in 1975 and newly separated against their will. Can’t wait to see what happens? You can watch the first five minutes of the premiere episode here.

Creator Maggie Friedman tells Tudum that the episode begins with young Kate (Roan Curtis) and Tully (Ali Skovbye) writing letters to each other after Tully had to move in with her grandmother in Seattle. Despite the distance, they still inspire each other: Kate channels Tully’s confidence with boys, and Tully learns to embroider (and that she can drop the bravado once in a while).

The opening minutes show us “what each of their journeys are going to be this season, Kate in terms of trying to find herself...

Why Blake Lively Replaced Katherine Heigl In The Age Of Adaline
Image
"The Age of Adaline" — directed by Lee Toland Krieger and released in 2015 — is, put simply, a movie centered around the idea that Blake Lively is an inhumanly beautiful creature. This makes it hard to imagine that anyone else could have played Adaline Bowman, a woman unstuck in time who's incapable of aging. What you may not know, though, is that "Grey's Anatomy" veteran Katherine Heigl was originally supposed to play the titular role but ended up dropping out ... so what happened here?

Heigl, who originated the role of Dr. Izzie Stevens on the long-running ABC medical drama — and left the series partway through its 6th season — was initially cast in the film against Angela Lansbury, who was supposed to play Adaline's much older daughter, Flemming. Long before the movie came out, Heigl exited the project in 2010, according to a report in Deadline; at first, the outlet said that Heigl's departure was due to on-set strife.

How Faithful Do Book-To-Screen-Adaptations Need to Be?
Image
Book-to-screen adaptations, whether films, limited series, or ongoing series, have become one of the most popular genres.

As an avid reader and TV fan, I love them.

Almost all networks or streaming services have featured some.

(Courtesy of Amazon)

Netflix even aired a companion series, The Netflix Book Club, in which some authors discussed how their novels were adapted to the screen.

There is a fine line between staying true to the source material, pleasing the fans, and developing the characters and stories as your own.

Deciding Which Format Works Best

The network or studio will decide which format works best based on whether it adapts one book or a series of books.

Developing a two-hour film worked best if the book had a clear plot with a beginning, middle, and end, such as Red, White, & Royal Blue.

Throughout Part 2 of Season 2, the scene’s puzzle pieces slowly come together, but at first it looks like Tully, dressed in white, might be getting ready to marry Johnny after Kate has died. As it turns out, it was Marah’s wedding, and Tully ended up with Danny.

Firefly Lane Final Episodes Trailer Asks Whether Friendship Truly is Forever
Sarah Chalke
It's been an emotional journey for Kate (Sarah Chalke) and Tully (Katherine Heigl), but will their friendship withstand more hurdles?

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the back half of Firefly Lane Season 2, which will bring the dramedy to an end for good.

The series has followed Kate and Tully's relationship over 30 years, and just like real-life, it hasn't been easy sailing for either of them.

The first half of the second season found the pair ending their years-long friendship, but fans were left with plenty of cliffhangers.

One of those cliffhangers involved Kate's ex-husband, Johnny Ryan (Ben Lawson), seemingly getting married to Tully.

"That's the thing about big life changes; you don't get to choose when they happen," Johnny Ryan shared in the new trailer. "You just have to hold on tight to the people you love and make your way through it."

In addition to Chalke, Heigl,...

‘Firefly Lane’ Stars on Their Friendship On and Offscreen and Eerie Connections: ‘It’s Like I’m Watching a Version of Myself’
Image
Netflix’s “Firefly Lane” captures a friendship that transcends the obstacles of distance, age and time as well as all kinds of rifts, arguments and betrayals (for the most part).

Spanning four decades, many trends and countless defining historical moments, “Firefly Lane” chronicles this core female friendship and how it weathers life’s challenges, and stars Sarah Chalke, Katherine Heigl, Roan Curtis and Ali Skovbye told TheWrap about their onscreen chemistry and the twists and turns of Season 2.

While they form a close friendship almost instantly, Kate and Tully could not be more opposite, both in personality and in their life goals, ambitions, desires and dreams.

Music plays a role all on its own throughout the series as well, and Heigl and Chalke had swift answers to which song would most accurately represent their characters.

How ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Tests a ‘Profound’ Platonic Bond: ‘Can You Accommodate Change in the Person You Love?’
Image
When “Firefly Lane” co-executive producer and author of the novel Kristin Hannah met with the TV adaptation’s creator Maggie Friedman, she gave her two pointers on the core of the story, which chronicles the ever-evolving friendship between quirky, methodical Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and bold, ambitious Tallulah ‘Tully’ Hart.

“The single most important thing was that this was a story that highlighted almost a female soulmate, your very best friend who is your best friend from the time you’re 13, for all of your life,” the author said in a recent interview with TheWrap. “We don’t sort of see enough of that representation on TV. I do think that the series has done an amazing job of creating these two women who, as different as they are, you absolutely believe that they love each other, and when the chips are down, they’re going to be there for each other.

‘Firefly Lane’ Stars and Creator Dissect Season 2’s Diverse Portrait of Female Ambition: ‘You Can’t Have It All at Once’
Katherine Heigl at an event for L'abominable vérité (2009)
Opposites often attract in the best of friendships, and that’s true of the sweeping tale of Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) in the Netflix series “Firefly Lane,” adapted from the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah. Not only do Kate and Tully compliment each other personality-wise, but the way they choose to live their lives down the road also complete the two supposed “halves” of adult womanhood.

Like in Hannah’s novel, Season 2 Part 1 of the Netflix show continues to expand the three separate timelines of the core female friendship that it sews together. Two younger actresses portray the teen versions of Tully (Ali Skovbye) and Kate (Roan Curtis) when they first meet in the seventies, but their bond stretches far into the future, all the way to the new millennium 2000.

“We do live in a very ageist culture, that seems to sort of feel like...

‘Firefly Lane’ Makes a Case Against Flashback Storytelling
Image
Every day I think about “Lost.”

This is not about my undying love for the serpentine ABC drama from 2004 (though don’t tempt me); Lost was this TV fan’s first exposure to flashback-based storytelling in a TV show, which it didn’t invent but certainly deployed with enviable efficacy. Each Lost episode focused on a specific character, following their narrative in the present and a related chapter of their past via flashback. It’s a format viewers will recognize from “Yellowjackets,” “Orange is the New Black,“ “This is Us,” and more — but the flashback structure takes on a twisted new form in Netflix’s “Firefly Lane,” which returned Friday for a second season.

“Firefly Lane,” based on the novel by Kristin Hannah, centers around the friendship of Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) throughout their lives. Any given episode tracks between three and four timelines; the girls’ teen years in the 1970s,...

Netflix’s ‘Firefly Lane’ Soapier Than Ever in Season 2
Image
“Firefly Lane” is a tricky little dramedy. It’s cozy. It’s melodramatic. There are elements that sound ridiculous, but the overall air is sweet. It’s a show based on a popular book about friendship persevering through the decades. It also aspired to be a show about journalism, women’s issues, and maybe even war.

But at the core is the relationship between lifelong friends Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) as they navigate life, work, and love. Season 1 culminated with Kate’s ex-husband Johnny (Ben Lawson) being blown up in the Middle East while reporting a story and Kate and Tully falling out for unknown reasons. Season 2 doesn’t just have to provide the same level of overwrought hijinks as last year, it also has to wrap everything up. The nine episodes released December 2 comprise the first half of the show’s final season, with...

‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Trailer Finds the Best Friends at Odds
Image
Netflix’s new trailer for Firefly Lane season two part one shows there’s tension between Tully and Kate, but it sort of balances that out by revealing more about their lifelong friendship. Part one of the final season premieres on December 2, 2022, with season two part two arriving in 2023.

Season one of the drama, based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah, debuted in February 2021 and starred Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as lifelong best friends who stuck by each other’s side through thick and thin. Heigl and Chalke are back as Tully and Kate, respectively, for the second season. They’re joined by returning cast members Ben Lawson as Johnny Ryan, Ali Skovbye as young Tully, Roan Curtis as young Kate, Yael Yurman as Marah, and Beau Garrett as Cloud.

Firefly Lane Final Season Trailer Finds Kate and Tully Navigating Turbulent Times
Katherine Heigl, Sarah Chalke, Roan Curtis, and Ali Skovbye in Toujours là pour toi (2021)
The end is nigh for Kate and Tully.

Netflix on Wednesday unveiled the trailer for the second and final season of Firefly Lane.

If first impressions are everything, the two best friends at the core of the series have a lot to work through.

"What could possibly have ended the tight-knit thirty year friendship of Tully and Kate, our Firefly Lane Girls Forever?" the official logline teases.

"We'll learn the answer this season -- but first -- Kate grapples with the painful aftermath of Johnny's ill-fated trip to Iraq, while Tully faces a lawsuit after walking away from her talk show, and must start her career over from the bottom."

"This leads her to search for answers about who she is and where she comes from -- including a quest to find the father she never met, against the wishes of her secretive hippie mother, Cloud," it adds.

"In the '80s,...

Firefly Lane Trailer: Kate and Tully Are Friends Until the End in Final Season
Image
Kate and Tully’s personal lives are a bit of a mess in the new trailer for Firefly Lane‘s final season — but at least they’ve got each other, and as many pints of ice cream as Tully can comfortably carry.

In the preview embedded above, Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl’s BFFs navigate everything from new professional endeavors (Tully’s making a documentary!) to complicated romances (Kate and Johnny aren’t really over, right?). And it seems their long friendship with one another might hit a few snags, too, if the 1:40-ish mark of the trailer is any indication.

"Firefly Lane" Is Returning For Its Second and Final Season in December
Image
It's official: season two of "Firefly Lane" is coming soon. The series follows two best friends named Tully (Katherine Heigl) and Kate (Sarah Chalke) and the ups and downs they've faced through the years. It's basically everything you love about soapy dramas like "Sweet Magnolias" and "Virgin River," with a twist of "This Is Us."

Unfortunately, the second season will be the series' last, Netflix revealed on Oct. 3. The final season will consist of a total of 16 episodes split into two parts.

Since the last episode of the first season ends on a major cliffhanger, we're already curious to know what will happen next. And given that it's based on Kristin Hannah's book series of the same name, there's plenty of inspiration to draw from. While there's no telling how closely the second season will follow the second book, "Fly Away," there are still plenty of storylines to explore in future episodes.

How Firefly Lane Depicts a Messy and Moving Female Friendship
Image
This article contains spoilers for Firefly Lane.

There’s something altogether predictable yet endearing about Firefly Lane, the latest in a line of Netflix shows adapted from the realm of romance and/or women’s fiction with a clear strength of star power at its center. It’s a story that spans three decades of friendship between two women who meet in their teenage years, following them through their strongest and lowest points in life (both together and apart) and all of the heartache, turmoil and drama that provides.

In short, it’s prime material to mine from, and seemingly tailor-made for the types of shows that Netflix is known for releasing — highly addictive, and sometimes almost in spite of themselves. A story that relies heavily on jumping through time throughout the various stages of a close-knit friendship seems like a tough needle to thread, but Firefly Lane demonstrates the...

Firefly Lane and the Problem with Aging up and Down
Stockard Channing at an event for 3 Needles (2005)
Stockard Channing was 33 when she played teenager Rizzo in Grease. Angelia Jolie was 29 when she played Colin Farrell’s mother in Alexander – only one year older than he was.

Films and shows cast actors outside their own age all the time, and it’s not unusual for actors to be aged up or aged down when a show or film takes place over a long time period, but in Firefly Lane this really jars.

Tully and Kate are best friends since the age of 14 back in 1974 – Firefly Lane follows the journey of the two, from young teens coping with family and school, to ambitious 20-somethings in the 1980s, to their lives at 43, with Kate going through a divorce and Tully juggling a successful TV career.

Teenage Tully and Kate are played by Ali Skovbye (aged 18) and Roan Curtis (24 as of Feb 2021), while 20-something Tully and Kate and 40-something Tully and...

‘Firefly Lane’ Review: An Enjoyable Cast Flounders in Wine Mom Melodrama
Image
“Firefly Lane” definitely feels like a series set in 2003. By that, I mean if someone told me this show was filmed that year and had been languishing in a vault for the last 18 years, I’d believe it. The series, an adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s novel of the same name, feels akin to series like “Brothers and Sisters” or “Parenthood” in its high-stakes melodrama and tackling of real issues. But with the former ramped up to 11, the latter — looking at sexism and workplace harassment — is overshadowed at best and incredibly maudlin at worst. At least the casting is compelling enough to keep things afloat.

The series takes place over several points in time, differentiated only by the characters’ wig changes. Tallulah “Tully” Hart (Katherine Heigl) and Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) have been best friends since they were teens, when Tully and her hippie mom Cloud (Beau Garrett) moved in across the street on,...

‘Firefly Lane’ Star Sarah Chalke on the ‘Super Humbling’ Challenge of Playing Kate at Ages 18 and 42
Sarah Chalke
It’s not every day you see an actor play a character from college freshman to middle-aged divorcee. But Sarah Chalke, along with her “Firefly Lane” co-star Katherine Heigl, was up for the challenge.

“It’s such a cool experience, because you have so much material,” Chalke said in an interview with TheWrap. “To find Kate at 18 versus up in her 40s, that was one of my favorite parts of the job. … Seeing her go from this very insecure, vulnerable kid to growing up and trying to find her voice, to wanting to be married and have kids and live that life, and then realizing that she actually would like to find that other creative part of herself again.”

The 10-episode Netflix series, an adaptation of the bestselling 2008 novel by Kristin Hannah, stars Chalke and Heigl as a pair of inseparable best friends. Through interwoven timelines spanning the 1960s to the mid-2000s,...

Firefly Lane Premiere Recap: Do Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke Really Make the Best of Friends?
Image
With Wednesday’s release of Netflix’s Firefly Lane, we got to know future BFFs Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey — played as adults by Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, respectively — just as they got to know one another. The former was portrayed as always having been gorgeous and outgoing, a star waiting to be born; the latter, bookish and reserved (as telegraphed by her ever-present glasses — TV shorthand for mousy). Yet they forged a relationship that lasted decades, at least until… dun dun Dun!

We’ll get to “dun dun Dun” in a bit — and give you a chance to...

‘Firefly Lane’: Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke Are Best Friends Forever
Image
On the surface, the story and theoretical appeal of Netflix’s new drama Firefly Lane seem clear. It is a decades-spanning tale of female friendship, meant to inspire laughter and lunges for the tissue box in equal measure, as it follow two women who both envy and complete each other. And it puts together a pair of seasoned TV stars: Katherine Heigl as Tully, the glamorous and confident one, and Sarah Chalke as the more modest and meek Kate. Adapted by Maggie Friedman (Witches of East End) from the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah,...

Netflix’s ‘Firefly Lane’ Throws Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke Into Three Decades of Tumultuous Friendship: TV Review
Image
Netflix’s hyper-specific categories have become something of a punchline over the years. For every general collection of “comedies” and “reality TV,” there are ones like “critically acclaimed LGBTQ TV shows” (“Queer Eye” and “Tales of the City”), “Feel-Good Reality TV” (“The Great British Baking Show” and “Dream Home Makeover”) and “Oddballs and Outcasts” (“Sex Education” and assorted standup specials from men who were bullied in high school). At first, these subgenres just felt like cheeky ways to organize Netflix’s ever-ballooning library. Increasingly, though, it seems as if Netflix originals are pitched and written with an eye toward fitting into these esoteric characterizations.

, which currently features shows ranging from “Grey’s Anatomy” to “Emily in Paris.” Based on Kristin Hannah’s novel, the unabashedly sentimental series follows two best friends from the moment they meet in 1974, through their time working at a local news station in the ’80s, and finally,...

Firefly Lane Review: Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke's Netflix Soap Opera Is the Most Trivial of Pursuits
Image
I’d love to say that I was wowed by Netflix’s series adaption of Kristin Hannah’s novel, Firefly Lane (dropping Wednesday, Feb. 3). Truth be told, I dive into every show that I’m tasked with reviewing hoping the same thing — to be dazzled, stunned, impressed.

I was none of those things. There was nothing there that we haven’t seen before, done smarter, more wittily and incisively, simply better.
