All 7 Territories & Their Barons In Into The Badlands Explained
Image
The apocalyptic and dreadful world of the TV series Into the Badlands is a thrilling foray into a future where civilization has collapsed. Into the Badlands is set somewhere in the American Midwest, also known as the Badlands, in an apocalyptic feudal society established in post-apocalyptic America. Into the Badlands' setting was divided into seven distinct territories that control a major resource and are ruled by Barons. Each territory in Into the Badlands follows a strict hierarchical system, where the cutthroat Barons control the land and maintain order through highly trained warriors known as clippers.

Into the Badlands follows the warrior Sunny (Daniel Wu), the head Clipper, also known as regent, to one of Badlands' incredibly powerful Barons, and M.K. (Aramis Knight), a mysterious teen with supernatural powers in Into the Badlands as they risk death while traveling through the dangerous feudal land and seek enlightenment. Fighting over power...

The 10 Best Fighters In Into The Badlands, Ranked
Image
Set in a post-apocalyptic future roughly half a millennium from today, Into the Badlands tells the story of a world where people have lost faith in guns. This premise explains the focus on characters who are adept martial artists, using melee weaponry skills and archery to survive. It's like a medieval age-themed fantasy but set in the future. There's even a magical gift granting superpowers in Into the Badlands which adds a layer of fantasy to the setting.

Since there are no guns in Into the Badlands, there is a lot of eye-catching melee combat featuring highly skilled characters who face off regularly, prompting one to wonder who is the strongest of them all. Divided into factions, the people are vying for power and are accompanied by their loyal lackeys in their fight for dominance. The best part is that the leaders themselves, despite being people in power, never shy...

‘Trim Season’ Review – A Bewitching Exploration of Gender, Magic, and Marijuana
Image
Cannabis is known to have many medical benefits and can be helpful with conditions like cancer, chronic pain, and Ptsd. There is also evidence of marijuana being connected to spirituality and being used for ritualistic purposes throughout history. Trim Season is a fantastical and thought-provoking commentary on gender and the magical benefits of cannabis.

Trim Season was written by David Blair (The Triangle), Sean E. DeMott (American Satan), and Cullen Poythress, directed by Ariel Vida (Vide Noir), and produced by Paper Street Pictures. Vida was the production designer for Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s mind-bending films Something in the Dirt and The Endless, and if you’re familiar with the universe Benson and Moorhead have created, you will appreciate the imaginative and almost mythical Easter Eggs Vida incorporates into Trim Season.

Trim Season follows the twentysomething Emma (Bethlehem Million), who is struggling to pay her rent when she loses...

‘Jesus Revolution’ Review: Solid Faith-Based Movie Remembers Time When Christians Welcomed Longhairs Into the Flock
Image
Half a century ago Hollywood was frantically trying to figure out the newly-dominant “youth market.” Since some of that market had recently found Jesus, there was a brief spate of related films: Zefferelli’s hippie-fied St. Francis biopic “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” adapted stage musicals “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Godspell,” the Billy Graham-produced “A Time to Run” chief among them. But as the “Jesus Movement” got absorbed into more mainstream institutions, the brief vogue flickered out.

For a moment there, however, counterculture and Christ had a groovy thing going on, one that promised both salvation for those who’d gone overboard on sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll, as well as a healthy shakeup of churches that had lost touch with younger generations. Dramatizing that moment is “Jesus Revolution,” an engaging, upbeat new effort from co-directors Jon Erwin (“I Can Only Imagine”) and Brent McCorkle (“Unconditional”), adapted from Greg Laurie’s memoir.

How One V/H/S/99 Entry Paid Homage To Phantasm [Exclusive]
Image
Whether they're seasoned filmmakers or voices on the rise, the "V/H/S" series has been a great den for all sorts of talent to try their hand at a miniature horror story. Horror anthologies have been going strong for decades, but it really wasn't until 2012's "V/H/S" where the concept was crafted to fit the mold for found footage. Since then, the series has ushered in five feature films.

The most recent entry in this series, "V/H/S/99" features another fun list of names, but the entry that stands out is "Suicide Bid," which happens to be come to us from director Johannes Roberts.

Roberts is a name that may not immediately stand out, but he's been making a name for himself in the world of horror. I don't share much love for "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," but at the same time, I consider "The Strangers: Prey At Night," one...

‘V/H/S/99’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Steven Ogg, Alexia Ioannides, Emily Sweet, Dashiell Derrickson, Melanie Stone | Written by Maggie Levin, Johannes Roberts, Zoe Cooper, Flying Lotus, Chris Lee Hill, Tyler MacIntyre, Vanessa Winter, Joseph Winter | Directed by Johannes Roberts, Flying Lotus, Tyler MacIntyre, Maggie Levin, Joseph Winter, Vanessa Winter

There’s a certain charm to the V/H/S franchise that I have never quite been able to put my finger on… until now. It’s that retro-style feel blended with the chilling horror elements that culminates in it feeling like both a warm hug and a rush of blood at the same time.

Are all of the movies in the franchise good? Certainly not. I’d argue that the first film is honestly the only truly great one… until now. V/H/S/99 is not only easily the best in the series since the first, but it’s also a legitimately chilling found footage horror anthology that comes...

V/H/S/99 Review
Image
Plot: Five terrifying tales are unearthed on a VHS tape that hasn’t been watched since 1999.

Review: Like all anthology films, V/H/S/99 is a mixed bag. It contains five separate stories, and as in every movie in this franchise, some are great, and some are mediocre. However, to the movie’s credit, none of the stories are bad, meaning that V/H/S/99 adds up to a pretty solid addition to the franchise.

Two of the stories are brilliant. My favorite, by a long shot, is the second one, Suicide Bid, written and directed by Johannes Roberts, who did 47 Meters Down and Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City. In it, Ally Ioannides plays a sorority pledge eager to be liked. Her would-be sisters decide to play a prank on her, burying her alive in a coffin, only to abandon her when cops show up, intending to return later to dig her up.

‘V/H/S/99’ Review: This Horror Anthology Sequel Is Light on Scares, Heavy on Vibes
Image
You don’t have to be a jaded Hollywood cynic to understand why the “V/H/S” franchise isn’t going anywhere. As any studio executive worth their salt would be quick to point out, a recognizable horror brand built around deliberately cheap production value with enough elasticity to accommodate new trends is a terrible thing to waste. That, combined with a direct-to-streaming release strategy that frees it from box office expectations, gives the long-running horror anthology series little incentive to improve.

You’re gonna get a new “V/H/S” movie just about every Halloween until the end of time, and you’re gonna like it. Then again, there are worse fates in life.

While “V/H/S/99” is a far cry from the original, it still manages to be far more fun than it has any right to be. By connecting its horror vignettes with trippy stop-motion sketches instead of a unifying plot device,...

TIFF Review: V/H/S/99 is a Fun Enough Rewind to the Dawn of Y2K
Johannes Roberts in Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
The inescapable problem at the core of any omnibus or anthology film with multiple cooks in the kitchen is, by all design, things will be uneven. Yet V/H/S/99 is fun enough in the context of TIFF’s Midnight Madness—including standouts from the usually gross and reliable Flying Lotus and Johannes Roberts, whose film is genuinely terrifying before turning a bit silly in its final moments.

As for the others, Maggie Levin’s Shredding contains a frightening concept (a Blink 182-style punk band plays a show in an abandoned basement nightclub where concertgoers were trampled to death in a fire years ago). It also has a few big laughs making fun of the styles and punk angst of the era playing out in zines and, of course, on AOL.

Another Internet-inspired concept turns American Pie’s creepy webcam gag on its head. Tyler MacIntrye’s The Gawkers find...

‘V/H/S/99’ Review: No One Is Kind in This Horror Rewind
Image
The odds are not good for “V/H/S” — which is to say it’s the even-numbered entries in this horror omnibus franchise that have been by far the best to date. As No. 5, “V/H/S/99” unfortunately maintains that pattern, providing an uninspired extension of the series that had rebounded after a seven-year lull with last fall’s “V/H/S/94.”

That installment was typically uneven, but the better segments were terrific. Here, nothing stands out: The best episodes are merely good enough, and the worst just tiresome. Nonetheless, this brand has proven viewer appeal for genre streaming platform Shudder, where it should do well when launched in various territories on Oct. 20. Set in 1999 — the tail of the titular format’s commercial reign, since DVDs were introduced two years prior — the film is unlikely to be the series’ last.

If this “V/H/S” has any binding theme, it would appear to be bullying. All...

Producer DeVon Franklin Steps In Front Of The Camera For Lionsgate & Kingdom Story Company’s ‘Jesus Revolution’
Image
Exclusive: Producer and bestselling author DeVon Franklin has found his first major film role in Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s Jesus Revolution. He joins an ensemble that also includes Kelsey Grammer, Joel Courtney, Anna Grace Barlow, Jonathan Roumie, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Ally Ioannides, Julia Campbell, Nic Bishop and Jolie Jenkins, as previously announced.

The film set in the 1970s watches as a young Greg Laurie (Courtney) sets out to redefine truth through all means of liberation, and instead, meets Lonnie Frisbee (Roumie), a charismatic hippie street preacher. Laurie and Frisbee, along with Pastor Chuck Smith (Grammer), open the doors of Smith’s languishing church to an unexpected revival by way of rock and roll, newfound love, and a twist of faith leading to a Jesus Revolution that changed the world. Franklin will play Josiah, a New York news reporter covering a story on the magnitude of the movement unfolding.

Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle (Unconditional) are directing from a script by Erwin and Jon Gunn. Kevin Downes and Jon and Andrew Erwin are producing alongside Josh Walsh (The Jesus Music) and Daryl Lefever (Woodlawn).

“Anyone who knows DeVon knows he is one of the most respected and successful producers in the industry, but they also know his devotion and commitment to inspiring people through entertainment,” said director Jon Erwin. “It is part of his DNA, and we are privileged that someone who is usually behind the scenes has graciously agreed to step in front of the camera for us for this important role and this story.”

“I was excited and nervous when they approached me to act,” added Franklin, “yet once I read the script, I knew I had to be part of bringing this powerful true story to the screen.”

Franklin serves as President and CEO of Franklin Entertainment, a production company boasting first-look deals with Paramount Pictures and CBS TV Studios. He has been the driving force behind some of Hollywood’s most successful inspirational content, including the soon-to-be-released movie Flamin’ Hot for Searchlight and the television series Kingdom Business for BET+. In addition to his work as a producer, Franklin is the author of multiple bestselling books. His Audible Original, It Takes a Woman—a deeply personal look into the tragedy that transformed his family’s life—was released in April.

Franklin serves the Hollywood community at large as Vice President of the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. The LA-based USC grad is repped by WME and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

New Trailer for 'The Nameless Days' Horror About Border Crossing
Andrew Mecham
"It's not that long 'till sunrise." Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official US trailer for an indie horror titled The Nameless Days, about the extremely dangerous act of crossing the border. Made by filmmakers filmmakers Andrew Mecham & Mattew Whedon (Behind You) this is arriving on VOD to watching starting in April. On the border between United States and Mexico, once every 20 years, there are days that locals call timelessness. At this time the gods, to whom the ancient Mayan tribes made sacrifices, descend to earth to take human souls. In the film, young immigrant Rahui and his pregnant sister are attacked and separated by a demonic spirit as they embark on a dangerous trek across the U.S. border. Starring Ally Ioannides, Charles Halford, Alejandro Akara, and Ambyr Mishelle. It's a good twist to see horror worked into the horrifying border crossing stories, although this otherwise seems like a fairly generic supernatural film.

Image
Exclusive: Maxim Swinton (Halston) has joined the cast of Raymond and Ray, writer-director Rodrigo García’s (Four Good Days) film for Apple Studios.

He joins an ensemble that includes Ewan McGregor, Ethan Hawke, Maribel Verdú and Sophie Okonedo, as previously announced.

The film currently in production in Virginia centers on Raymond (McGregor) and Ray (Hawke), half-brothers who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humor, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There’s anger, there’s pain, there’s folly, there might be love, and there’s definitely grave-digging.

Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón is producing with Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures, with Gabriela Rodriguez and Shea Kammer serving as EPs.

Swinton recently portrayed a younger version of McGregor’s fashion designer Halston in Netflix’s Emmy-winning miniseries of the same name. The...

Synchronic Ending Makes Sci-Fi Movie a Modern Classic
Image
This article contains Synchronic spoilers.

“Time is the school in which we learn / Time is the fire in which we burn,” wrote poet Delmore Schwartz decades ago, and if any genre filmmakers take that couplet to heart, it’s Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. The self-contained directing/writing/producing/acting pair have made four feature films to date, each of them dealing in some way with the passage of time, the volatility of memory, and the warping of both.

Their fourth feature, last year’s Synchronic—which makes its Netflix debut this week—is the duo’s most mature, fully developed, and coherent film yet, while also their most polished and accessible in a mainstream sense. It continues the filmmakers’ exploration of the themes they’ve touched on before, but adds a new dimension in terms of the way the story’s main character responds to the choices placed in...

‘Synchronic’ Review

Stars: Anthony Mackie, Jamie Dornan, Katie Aselton, Ally Ioannides, Ramiz Monsef, Bill Oberst Jr., Betsy Holt, Shane Brady | Written by Justin Benson | Directed by Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead

New Orleans paramedics Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) begin to encounter some awful and viscerally brutal murders, the only connection is a drug named synchronic. When Dennis daughter goes missing Steve becomes obsessed with finding her. He soon finds that synchronic is not just a psychotropic drug that has people dying in mental unexplained ways but get this… Its also a time travel drug. Yup, that’s a plot point in this movie and boy do they bury the lead on that score… The important question being, which rules do we follow? T2 or Back to the Future??]

First of all I want to talk about how bloody gorgeous Synchronic looks. The darkness, the grit and the rundown reality is...

Synchronic Review: A Timely Tale
Image
This review contains what may be spoilers for the film Synchronic.

Synchronic is the fourth feature film from the writing-directing (and sometimes acting) team of Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benso. Their previous independent efforts–Resolution (2012), Spring (2014) and The Endless (2017)–were all hybrids in one way or another of sci-fi and horror, leaning more toward one or the other, depending on the story that was at hand.

Synchronic extends the duo’s ambitions in terms of the scope of the story, its genre (still decidedly science fiction with horror overtones), and its casting. For the first time, the pair work with bankable Hollywood names. Meanwhile the storytelling and overall logic are as intelligent and thoughtful as ever, resulting in a film that may be modest in overall size but large in terms of its ideas and humanity.

One of the Avengers himself, Anthony Mackie, stars as Steve, a New Orleans paramedic...

Synchronic Review: A Sophisticated Sci-Fi Mystery with Trippy Visuals
Image
A pair of New Orleans paramedics encounter a designer drug that alters the spacetime continuum. Synchronic is a complex science fiction film with engaging lead characters. It wraps an intense personal drama around mind-bending metaphysical concepts. A dark color palette and trippy visuals significantly add to the overall experience. Not every aspect is successful, but the intriguing bits are certainly good enough to keep your attention.

Synchronic opens on a bizarre crime scene in a dingy hotel. Two veteran paramedics, Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan), are briefed by the police. The first victim was bitten by some kind of exotic snake. The other suffered a less kind fate in the elevator shaft. Steve finds used packets of a drug called Synchronic. He nurses a headache and a rough hangover. Dennis complains about having a rebellious eighteen-year-old daughter, Brianna (Ally Ioannides), and a newborn infant. The men have been best friends since childhood.

Synchronic Trailer Showcases New Mind-Bending Movie From The Endless Duo
Aaron Moorhead
Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s most mainstream endeavor yet is set to be released next month. Synchronic, a new feature from the directors of Spring, Resolution and The Endless, stars former Mr. Grey, Jamie Dornan and Marvel’s new Captain America, Anthony Mackie. It promises to be just as fascinating as Moorhead and Benson’s previous flicks, if this first trailer is anything to go by, however, when the film originally screened at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, critics were conflicted over comparisons to the pair’s previously stellar efforts.

Here’s an official wee synopsis for you:

“When New Orleans paramedics and longtime best friends Steve (Mackie) and Dennis (Dornan) are called to a series of bizarre, gruesome accidents, they chalk it up to the mysterious new party drug found at the scene. Synchronic Trailer Takes Anthony Mackie & Jamie Dornan on a Time-Bending Trip
Image
Well Go USA has revealed the first trailer for Synchronic. The new sci-fi/thriller is the latest from filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. This time, they've teamed up with Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, who lead the cast. As this footage reveals, it seems Benson and Moorhead have crafted a trippy ride, time-bending ride.

The trailer opens with some atmospheric shots before we catch up with a pair of paramedics who arrive on a scene unlike anything they've witnessed before. It is difficult to fully get a grip on what is happening in the footage as presented but Anthony Mackie's character has a serious medical condition. He then proceeds to conduct a series of experiments utilizing a mysterious drug that comes with some unexpectedly unique side effects. Based on what we're seeing here, this looks to be a truly wild, off the beaten path bit of sci-fi storytelling.

Full Trailer for Benson & Moorhead's Time Travel Sci-Fi 'Synchronic'
Synchronic (2019)
"I want to know... that there's meaning in the things I do." Well Go USA has released the full-length official trailer for Synchronic, the fascinating new sci-fi thriller from acclaimed filmmaking duo Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead. This premiered at TIFF last year, and also played at the Sitges and London Film Festivals, plus Fantastic Fest and a few others. Two New Orleans paramedics' lives are ripped apart after they encounter a series of deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects. It's a refreshing new take on time travel, involving a technique that we've never seen before. Of course Benson & Moorhead are always innovating even in low key ways. The film stars Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan, with Katie Aselton, Ally Ioannides, Natasha Tina Liu, Martin Bats Bradford. I saw this last year and loved it, writing that it's "a worthy new addition to the time travel sci-fi subgenre.
