Jensen Ackles' Supernatural Replacement Show Dethrones Prime Video's New Thriller Series That's Been Dominating the Streaming Charts
Image
Jensen Ackles' new show continues to make a splash on streaming. Countdown premiered with a three-episode release on June 25 and has been a constant in the charts ever since.

On July 2, Countdown returned with its fourth episode, which was enough to bring subscribers back to the platform. In the days after the premiere, Countdown struggled to hold on to the top positions in the charts, but it returned in full force. Per FlixPatrol, Countdown has now dethroned Prime Video's most recent hit, the thriller adaptation We Were Liars.

We Were Liars is based on the popular 2014 novel of the same name by E. Lockhart, and follows the Sinclairs, an old-money family, where a mysterious accident changes the eldest grandchild's life forever. The series premiered on Prime Video on June 18, and has been a major hit. However, its dominance is being tested by Countdown. The show is currently the number one TV show on Prime Video,...

Jensen Ackles' New Thriller Series That Finally Gave Fans a Supernatural Replacement Is a Way Bigger Deal Than Fans Realize
Image
Jensen Ackles-led Countdowncontinues to dominate the streaming charts.

Per FlixPatrol, the latest crime drama from creator Derek Haas has reached the number two spot on the top streaming chart for Amazon Prime Video for July 3. As of the time of writing, Countdown is only beat out by We Were Liars, while standing well above other hit releases such as The Chosen and The Accountant 2.

Countdown stars Jensen Ackles as Mark Meachum, a Los Angeles Police Department robbery and homicide detective who is called in to join a covert, undercover task force made up of agents from various law enforcement agencies. The series' ensemble cast is rounded out by Jessica Camacho as DEA Special Agent Amber Oliveras, Violett Beane as DEA Special Agent Evan Shepherd, Elliot Knight as FBI Special Agent Keyonte Bell, Eric Dane as FBI Special Agent Nathan Blythe, and Uli Latukefu as LAPD Detective Lucas Finau. Countdown season 1 episode 2 recap: The team's risky run delivers a name
Image
This post contains spoilers from Countdown season 1 episode 2 from this point forward.

Jumping off from the shocking reveal at the end of the first episode, Countdown season 1 episode 2 doesn't immediately meet back up with the task force. Instead, we flash back to 2008 in Minsk, Belarus, and meet a man named Borys (Bogdan Yasinski). While working on some kind of electric invention, he answers the door to find his brother Anton badly beat up. He's in deep trouble with an American who has threatened to kill him. Suddenly, Borys is mixed up in the drama.

Throughout the episode, the flashbacks continue, revealing that the American wants Borys to procure electronic communication that's been exchanged between the Kremlin and a political leader. Anton's life is on the line. Since it's crunch time, Borys does as he's told to save his brother, but he's too late. Anton dies by a self-inflicted gunshot in the bathtub,...

Jensen Ackles and Eric Dane’s Crime Thriller ‘Countdown’ Is Tedious and Repetitive: TV Review
Image
“Chicago Fire” and “Chicago Pd” creator Derek Haas has partnered with Prime Video for his latest crime drama. “Countdown” follows an elite task force formed to track down a murderer after a beloved Department of Homeland Security officer is killed in broad daylight. Helmed by FBI Special Agent Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane), the team is comprised of various law enforcement agents, including LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles), DEA Special Agent Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho), Dhs Office Damon Drew (Jonathan Togo), FBI Special Agent Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight), FBI Special Agent Evan Shepard (Violett Beane) and LAPD Detective Lucas Finau (Uli Latukefu). What begins as an intriguing adventure to find one culprit unveils a much bigger, years-long global conspiracy. Unfortunately, though the show has all of the fundamentals needed for an engaging action series, “Countdown” grows duller by the episode.

The 13-episode first season (critics received 10 for review) opens with a bang — literally.

If you are looking forward to Jensen Ackles‘ upcoming action crime thriller series Countdown, then we have got the complete release schedule for the Prime Video series below for you. Created by Derek Haas, Countdown feels like Amazon’s attempt at making weekly network television for its streaming service, and while the show is relatively entertaining, it doesn’t feel like it belongs on Prime Video.

Countdown is set in Los Angeles and it revolves around a group of agents from various law enforcement agencies brought together to form a task force, which is assigned to investigate the murder of a Homeland Security agent in broad daylight. Their investigation soon leads them to a terrorist threat that could destroy the whole city.

Jensen Ackles Steps Into the Real World as a Gritty Cop in Prime Video’s New Show: “Well, he’s not having to chase ghosts or fight vampires”
Image
Jensen Ackles is stepping into a new kind of role, leaving behind the supernatural and comic book worlds he’s long been known for. In the upcoming Prime Video series Countdown, Ackles plays LAPD detective Mark Meachum — a character rooted firmly in the real world.

Unlike his past roles in Supernatural and The Boys, this time there are no demons, ghosts, or superpowers involved. Speaking with Collider’s Aidan Kelley, Ackles pointed out what makes this role different. “Well, he’s not having to chase ghosts or fight vampires or deal with demons,” he said. “He’s not having to deal with superhero powers. So, we’ve taken all the genre out of the stuff that I’m normally doing.”

This grounded approach gave Ackles the rare chance to do hands-on preparation. Instead of imagining fictional battles, he got to talk with real-life professionals to build his character. “I’ve met with some FBI agents,...

Speaking with Aidan Kelley from Collider at the show’s premiere, Ackles explained why this character feels different from anything he’s done before.

“Well, he’s not having to chase ghosts or fight vampires or deal with demons,” he said. “He’s not having to deal with superhero powers. So, we’ve taken all the genre out of the stuff that I’m normally doing.”

Don’t Expect Jensen Ackles’ ‘Countdown’ Character To Be Anything Like His Roles in ‘The Boys’ and ‘Supernatural’ [Exclusive]
Image
Jensen Ackles has held down a lot of character roles in his life, but his latest casting in Prime Video’s Countdown allows him to tap into something completely different. In his own words, the actor said his turn as LAPD detective Mark Meachum gave him the chance to get “into the real world.” While speaking with Collider’s Aidan Kelley on the red carpet ahead of Countdown’s premiere, the actor broke down what sets this character apart from, say, Supernatural’s Dean Winchester or The Boys’ Soldier Boy.

“Well, he’s not having to chase ghosts or fight vampires or deal with demons. He’s not having to deal with superhero powers. So, we’ve taken all the genre out of the stuff that I’m normally doing.”

Although he’ll always have a soft spot for portraying characters from a fantastical universe, Ackles said that Countdown allowed...

‘Countdown’ Star Dishes on Playing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in This Cancelled 91% Rotten Tomatoes Series [Exclusive]
Image
Uli Latukefu is set to star as Luke Finau in Prime Video’s upcoming series, Countdown, but now he’s pulling back the curtain on his time playing what many view as his most famous role. Latukefu features as a young Dwayne Johnson in Young Rock, the sitcom/biopic telling the story of The Rock’s formative years as he grew up. Latukefu plays the 18-20-year-old version of Johnson, Adrian Groulx plays him at age 10, and Bradley Constant at age 15. Randall Park also stars in the show as himself, and Ana Tuisila plays The Rock’s mother, Lia Maivia. Collider’s Aidan Kelley recently caught up with Latukefu at the premiere of Countdown, and he asked what it was like taking on such an “unenviable role”:

"At first it was very daunting. They were big shoes to fill. But it's an honor. He's a legend, and he's awesome.

‘Countdown’ Creator Breaks Silence on Eric Dane’s, 52, Potential Return in Season 2 Amid His Ongoing Battle With Als
Image
Whether you know him from Grey’s Anatomy, Euphoria, or something completely different, Eric Dane has made his way onto living room television sets and cinematic screens throughout the course of his fruitful career. Sadly, the actor recently revealed that he had been diagnosed with Als, telling Good Morning America’s Diane Sawyer that the disease had left him with “one functioning arm.” With his ailment in mind, audiences are wondering how much he’ll be able to do in the future, specifically when it comes to his newest series, Countdown, which premieres on Prime Video on June 25. Although it has yet to receive a Season 2 renewal, there’s a good chance that, with the dynamite cast that also includes Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho, and the story from creator and showrunner Derek Haas, the studio will be ordering more episodes.

While speaking with Parade about his latest foray into television,...

‘Countdown’ Boss Derek Haas Assembled His Own Special Task Force to Make His Version of an ’80s Classic
Image
The countdown is on for “Countdown,” Prime Video’s new special task force crime drama from Derek Haas premiering June 25.

The series stars Jensen Ackles, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Uli Latukefu, Jonathan Togo and Elliot Knight as various law enforcement agents who are put together under leader Eric Dane to solve a murder … with much greater implications for Los Angeles.

“A lot of shows in this genre, for whatever reason, in the last 10 to 15 years, they’re really dark and cynical and super gritty and dirty. I remember the movies from the ’80s I grew up loving — ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ ‘Crimson Tide,’ ‘Die Hard,’ ‘Lethal Weapon’ — which I don’t feel like you see in this genre too much anymore,” Haas told TheWrap at the premiere. “Thankfully, I got Jensen Ackles … he could have been in any of those movies.”

“The hardest thing is to come up with surprises.

Jensen Ackles saves the day in (literal) explosive trailer for Prime Video's Countdown
Image
We are definitely counting down the days to new Prime Video series Countdown! The show looks so good, and of course one of our favorite actors Jensen Ackles is headlining it so you know we'll be seated. This is the actor's first series after The Winchesters, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what's in store. Thankfully the trailer is here, which gives us a closer look.

Countdown premieres Wednesday, June 25, 2025 with the first three episodes, followed by one weekly after that on Prime Video. There's a total of 13 episodes, which is actually a pretty generous amount in the streaming world today. Mark you calendars down when the finale drops Sept. 3, 2025.

So the crime drama, and Ackles, will be with us through the summer. Definitely not complaining about that! The show will be a nice addition to have every week during that time. Before we get into more of it,...

Frightfest 2023: ‘Failure!’ Review
Image
Stars: Ted Raimi, Merrick McCartha, Noel Douglas Orput, Melissa Diaz | Written and Directed by Alex Kahuam

Having debuted his 2021 film Forgiveness at Frightfest, director Alex Kahuam follows it up with Failure! another “one-take” horror that sees 56-year-old James (Ted Raimi) caught between a rock and a hard place. Due to a massive debt with his bank, James is given one hour to choose between selling his factory to prevent financial ruin or murder to protect his family.

The idea of films being shot in one take has become something of a gimmick in recent years – films even Not shot that way have been made to look like everything has been shot on one camera with no editing. However, in the case of Failure!, being shot in one take is 100% true, so much so that you can actually see the clever way director Alex Kahuam gets around the constraints of the format,...

Official Trailer for 'They Crawl Beneath' Earthquake Creature Feature
Image
"How many of you are there!?" Well Go USA has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror feature titled They Crawl Beneath, which will be out on VOD directly in the start of October. This practical effects-driven creature feature, reminiscent of the fun horror films of the 1950s, hasn't played at any festivals but still looks worth watching. If you dig creature features, give this a look. After an earthquake leaves Danny trapped and alone, his claustrophobic nightmare only gets worse when something truly horrifying emerges from the fissures in the ground, forcing him to engage in a brutal fight for his life—and his sanity. Joseph Almani stars, with Michael Pare, Arthur Roberts, Merrick McCartha, Karlee Eldridge, Elena Sahagun, and Natalia Bilbao. This looks like a distant cousin of Tremors, with practical monsters that emerge from the ground with giant teeth hungry to eat tasty humans. Might be a fun!
