Subhash K Jha revisits Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum… Dil De Chuke SanamHum… Dil De Chuke Sanam. Thereafter, my life as a cineaste underwent a complete change. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying my friend Sanjay has made the best film ever. Or perhaps I Am saying that. And don’t let the “friend” before Sanjay’s name distort the truth. I became friends with the director only after he made Hum Dil what-have-you.
I still remember that morning after the devastating experience. Before Ho-ho-hum-dil-de-chuke-sanam, all I knew about Sanjay was through Khamoshi: The Musical, not to be confused with Khamoshi: The Super-Musical that Asit Sen had made thirty years earlier. I expected to encounter an arrogant, impetuous director completely conscious of his genius as a director. And I was prepared for it. Chris Pratt will be executive producing a new dark comedy series in development at Amazon from the creator of the Netflix series Unstable. Some of Pratt's best movies and TV shows have fallen into the realm of comedy, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and his time on Parks and Recreation. The actor has a decorated career that spans beyond these projects, too, including his role in Netflix's The Electric State adaptation, and his upcoming role in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.
However, Deadlinereports that Pratt will be going behind-the-scenes as an executive producer for God's Country, a dark comedy being developed by Amazon MGM Studios. Created by John Owen Lowe, best known for the Netflix comedy Unstable, God's Country follows a family described as having "Shakespearean roots," whose real estate mogul patriarch sets about gentrifying "the heart of America." But a small town's past threatens him and his family's endeavors.

Adam Londy of Tornante will exec produce alongside Chris Pratt (The Terminal List).
Lowe is best known for co-creating, exec producing and starring opposite father Rob Lowe in Netflix’s comedy Unstable, which ran for two seasons. Prior to that writing on Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, he is repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, and Latham & Watkins.

Subhash K Jha in a new installment of his series This Day That Year, looks at Hansal Mehta’s CityLights. We also hear from Producer Mahesh Bhatt anout the making of the film
We’ve read a whole lot on the B A Pass Director Ajay Bahl’s walk-out of the Bhatts’ camp over the project CityLights which clocks 11 years on May 30. What is not known to the public is the real reason why the fall-out happened. Apparently the flash-point that severed Ajay Bahl’s relationship with the Bhatts was the film’s pretty Sikkimese model-turned-actress Geetanjali Thapa’s remuneration.
The problems started early. Ajay Bahl had no stress with Mahesh Bhatt. It was Mukesh who first declared that CityLights would have a budget of Rs 5 ½ crores. But when Ajay insisted on Raj Kumar Yadav for the film’s leading man Mukesh further cut the budget as he felt Raj was not a boxoffice pull.

In a film industry obsessed with noise, Ankith Madhav is quietly building a reputation for precision. Whether it’s the clipped authority of Yogesh Yadav in Kannur Squad or the understated intensity in Richie Mehta’s Poacher, there’s something strikingly deliberate about the way he moves through roles—like an actor who knows the power of restraint.
Originally based in Mumbai before the pandemic, Ankith now works largely out of Kochi. It’s a geographical shift that’s gone unnoticed by many, especially after Kannur Squad positioned him convincingly as a North Indian officer. For audiences and casting directors alike, his fluency in Hindi and body language lent an authenticity that blurred lines between actor and character.
“I still get messages asking if I’m from outside Kerala,” Ankit Madhav says with a half-smile, but there’s no frustration—just the quiet satisfaction of a performance that convinced.

Padmaavat

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
As Sanjay Bhansali’s stunning Padmaavat re-opens in theatres, Subhash K Jha looks back at this seminal celluloid creation.
Padmaavat created a storm much before its release when the Karni Seva took it upon itself to stage violent protests against the masterpiece. Padmaavat was a labour of love. As in all of Bhansali’s films, there are visuals in Padmaavat that will be remembered for all times to come. And this is as opportune a time as any to salute Bhansali’s cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee, who is a magician, a visionary par excellence who can put on-screen images that poets and painters put into their creations when at the acme of inspiration.

Ranveer Brar can’t get over the experience of shooting with Kareena Kapoor Khan in Hansal Mehta’s The Buckingham Murders. “Sir, it is something else! I mean at first everyone scared me so much. So I was very intimidated at first, you know, in awe. And then, I think she has this very calming presence around her. She puts you at ease, she put me at ease. So after the first scene, I lost that intimidation. And then I settled in easily. Also, I learned a lot from her. I think the ability to switch on and off, the knack of how to compose yourself before a scene.

After the Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War ended, Russia’s president decided to visit India in 1993. This sparked real concern among the Intelligence Bureau and Wing officers as there were rumors of a plot to assassinate the president during his stay in New Delhi. Government officials suspected a deaf and mute worker from a Berlin café named Ashok Kumar as they found a German-made gun in his possession and thought he might be involved with the Kgb, or Isi, or maybe even the CIA, and thought he may have a possible connection to the assassination plot. Therefore, the government took the help of Pushkin Verma, a government teacher at a local school for the deaf and mute to get to the bottom of this by interviewing Ashok to figure out whether he was truly involved in this dangerous scheme or if he was being framed. The big question...

A federal judge ruled that Google violated antitrust laws “by maintaining its monopoly” on two product markets, search and general text advertising.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta came after a landmark trial last year in Washington, D.C.
“After having carefully considered the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote. “It has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act.”
Read the Google antitrust ruling.
The case will next enter a remedy phase, where the judge will determine what action Google has to take to resolve the antitrust issues.
The judge said that Google’s distribution agreements — in which it was placed as the default search engine on browsers, Apple and Samsung mobile devices and wireless carriers — have foreclosed competition. The judge noted that Google paid $26 billion in 2021 on...

Google has been found to have violated antitrust laws by building a moat around its monopoly over search.
In a ruling that could have sweeping impact in the digital ad market, a federal judge sided with the government in a landmark antitrust case over allegations that competitors were sidelined and customers got a lower-quality experience on the internet due to the tech giant’s dominance in search. The court pointed to exclusive deals with other companies, like Apple and Samsung, to have Google as the default search engine on their phones and browsers.
“Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” wrote U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta.
In the following months, the court is expected to decide on structural relief, which could mean divestitures or changes to the way the company is allowed to run its business.

Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.

On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected former Trump adviser Peter Navarro‘s bid to stay out of prison while he appeals his conviction for evading a congressional subpoena.
Navarro, 74, was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate with the House January 6 committee investigating the Capitol Riot. Navarro failed to provide documents to the committee and refused to testify. Navarro cited former President Donald Trump‘s executive privilege to maintain confidentiality. However, there is no evidence that Trump ever asserted the privilege or that it would apply in this case.
This is Navarro’s second attempt to stay out of prison. In March, Chief Justice John Roberts denied Navarro’s first request. Navarro was ordered to report to a federal prison in Miami on March 19. Navarro renewed his request to Justice Neil Gorsuch. The motion was brought to a full court for a vote. Previously,...

If you recall how invigorating it was to be swept away in such compelling true-crime dramas like The Staircase and Under the Banner Of Heaven, then set your sights on Under the Bridge. The new Hulu miniseries starring Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six) is based on author Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime book about 14-year-old Reena Virk, who was found dead in 1997, eight days after she never returned home from a night out with friends.
Virk’s death, and the way this miniseries captures the events surrounding it, forces one to pause — the girl was surrounded and beaten by a group of teenagers. Vritika Gupta delivers a mesmerizing performance here as Reena in a masterful showcase that deals with race issues and the universal need for belonging. A year and a half ago, Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough were still relative unknowns about to hit the big time when they were cast together in the eight-episode Hulu true-crime thriller “Under the Bridge.” Gladstone would steal the show in the Martin Scorsese epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” earning an Oscar nomination and a SAG Award win. Keough, famously the eldest grandchild of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, landed Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her starring role in the Prime Video limited series “Daisy Jones and the Six.” In a Zoom interview this week for the “Under the Bridge” premiere on Hulu with its writer-creator Quinn Shephard and showrunner Samir Mehta, Mehta described landing Gladstone and Keough in the follow-up project to their big breakthrough as “literally kismet.”

The star-studded casting of Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in Hulu’s Under the Bridge, as it turns out, all started in the DMs.
The series, which counts Keough as an executive producer, is based on the true story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl who was beaten and murdered by a group of teenagers in Canada in 1997. Keough stars as Rebecca Godfrey, who investigated and wrote a book on the tragedy, with Gladstone as a local police officer trying to solve the case.
At the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, Gladstone recalled forming a bond with Keough in 2017 as they ran in the same Hollywood circles, when she was promoting Certain Women and the Daisy Jones & The Six star was releasing American Honey.
“I was aware of her work, anyway, but I feel like being in each other’s orbit then, I became very curious about who this talent was.

Lily Gladstone, creator and EP Quinn Shephard and showrunner/executive producer Samir Mehta joined Deadline’s Contenders TV to discuss their Hulu series Under the Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s account of the murder of Reena Virk, all three said they were careful not to sensationalize Virk’s death.

Gladstone added that her movie Killers of the Flower Moon, for which she was Oscar nominated, faced the same issue. She felt Martin Scorsese’s film was aware of this dynamic, indicting itself for making a work of art about a real-life tragedy, too.

Poacher

Poacher is about killing elephants for their tusk. Richie Mehta , known to not spare us any details from the scene of the crime (Delhi Crime) highlights scenes of poachers ripping out the priceless ivory from elephants wailing in unbearable pain.
I don’t know how Mehta shot these never-before scenes of cruelty to animals. We are assured that no animal was harmed during the shooting. We as the spectators are irreparably harmed.
It is not a pleasant sight to see how cruel we humans can be. Poached is an expose on a loveless irredeemably lost civilization which no longer cares about the damage we cause to our own earth every single day.
But we are straying. The focus here is on the plunder of elephants. It is not an easy breezy series to sit through.

Hansal Mehta’s Netflix series “Scoop” on Sunday won the prizes for best Asian TV series and best lead actress for Karishma Tanna at the Busan International Film Festival’s 2023 Asia Content Awards and Global Ott Awards.
The hard hitting crime drama series is based on journalist Jigna Vora’s 2019 memoir “Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison.” Tanna plays the lead role of Jagruti Pathak, a scoop-hunting journalist who is caught in the nexus of the police, the underworld and the media.
Mehta (“Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”) cast Tanna in the role because in her audition she had “the X factor” and that she “lights up a room.” “It’s an author backed role, it’s a dream come true role,” Tanna told Variety in Busan.
“The entire show is on this character Jagruti Pathak and the director has seen so much potential in you and you feel a responsibility,...
