Eric Roberts appears early on in Shawn C. Phillips’ Amityville Bigfoot. He turns up at the derelict cabin that is purportedly a laboratory for Amityville Chemical and proceeds to dress everyone down for allowing Bigfoot to escape.

It’s not a great role and Roberts is very clearly playing Eric Roberts, but the over the top charisma (and chicklet teeth) of the slumming C-lister is enough to temporarily lift the latest Amityville film out of its doldrums and become something briefly interesting. Not necessarily something watchable, but at least a film that isn’t horrendously boring.

A bizarre recurring issue with the Amityville “franchise” is that the films tend to be needlessly complicated. Back in the day, the first sequels moved away from the original film’s religious-themed haunted house storyline in favor of streamlined, easily digestible concepts such as “haunted lamp” or “haunted mirror.”

As the budgets plummeted and indie filmmakers capitalized on the brand’s notoriety, it seems the wrong lessons were learned. Runtimes have ballooned past the 90-minute mark and the narratives are often saggy and unfocused.

Both issues are clearly on display in Amityville Karen (2022), a film that starts off rough, but promising, and ends with a confused whimper.

This year kicked off with the theatrical release of Blumhouse’s Night Swim last week, and the new releases are going to start picking up a bit here in the second full week of the new year.

Woods Witch begins with the standard found footage title card telling us that what we are about to see is real and compiled from footage “found in the Allensville Woods along with online footage and police bodycam footage”. It also, in the style of classic exploitation films, promises that it contains “some of the most bizarre, disgusting and disturbing images ever put on screen.”

That footage begins with video of Garrett Gaspar who briefly attempts a bizarre French accent before a ghostly something or other attacks him. Cut to video from Jonah whose name is misspelled Johna in the channel’s name, and Jocelyn two aspiring influencers.

Safier Entertainment, PhilaDreams Films and Cult Cinema LLC have announced that Scream Bloody Murder – starring Scout Taylor-Compton, Robert Lasardo, James Duval, Vernon Wells, Kelly Reiter, and Lauren Francesca – will start filming May 2021.

Scream Bloody Murder will be the first feature film from director, Shawn C. Phillips – aka YouTuber and actor Coolduder. Rounding out the great talent behind this production is executive producer, Will Collazo Jr.; editor/producer Navid Sanati; co-producer Julie Anne Prescott; and additional casting by Clapit. Says Phillips:

Its going to be a love letter to 90s slasher films in the style of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The movie will also have elements of films like Mean Girls as well as Revenge of the Nerds. So it will have some humor mixed in as well to the film.

Fantastic Beasts 3 is make or break for this offshoot of the Wizarding World. The 2016 original was a huge hit and expectations were high for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. But it was here that the franchise stumbled, with critics highlighting the needlessly complicated plot and audiences staying away, resulting in it ending up as the lowest-grossing film in the Harry Potter universe to date.

This leaves the upcoming third movie with a big hill to climb, which is not exactly helped by the recent controversial comments made by author J.K. Rowling that have seen many of her fans turn on her. But Warner Bros. sound like they’re pulling out all the stops in an effort to turn things around.

At NY Comic Con, we spotted Internet star Lauren Francesca getting down on the floor with Zenescope Comics. It was directed by Wolfgang Meyer prior to his work on upcoming releases 15 Till Midnight and Song of the Shattered. The trailer is embedded below.
