Netflix to Stream Chinese Suspense Series ‘See Her Again’ in Deal With China’s Tencent
Image
Global streamer Netflix has picked up select international streaming rights to the much anticipated Chinese fantasy suspense series See Her Again. Currently in postproduction, the show is expected to drop later this year simultaneously on Netflix and Chinese streamer Tencent Video. The deal was unveiled this week at the ongoing 29th Shanghai TV Festival.

See Her Again is produced by Tencent Video and Hong Kong production banner Drama Apple. The 18-episode series was the only Asian show selected to compete for the Coup de Coeur Award at MIPTV’s MIPDrama Screenings in April.

Initially set in the 1990s, the series follows a Hong Kong police detective (played by Hong Kong heartthrob William Chan) who unexpectedly travels to the year 2018 and partners with a female detective (popular mainland Chinese actress Cya Liu) to uncover a series of mysterious murder cases stretching across the past. The ensemble cast includes Tse Kwan Ho...

Film Review: Bursting Point (2023) by Dante Lam and Calvin Tong
Image
Before heading off to mainland China to direct those patriotic but commercially successful films like “Operation Mekong” (2016), “Operation Red Sea” (2018), “The Battle of Changjin” (2021), Dante Lam's last Hong Kong film starring Nick Cheung was “The Demon Within” (2014). Now, back to his roots and home turf almost a decade later and this time co-directing with Calvin Tong, he delivers us the extremely violent Category III, adults only “Bursting Point”, again with Cheung in the lead.

Veteran chief inspector Bond Sir of the anti-narcotic branch is desperate to apprehend the boss of a local drug traffickers' gang Yang (Shaun Tam). Bond then plants a young cop Jiang Ming (William Chan) as a mole into their organization. After several unsuccessful confrontations with high casualties on both sides, the police manage to retain Yang's brother but he later dies in custody which further angers Yang. Furthermore, Ming seems to have blown his undercover...

Film Review: All About Love (2010) by Ann Hui
Image
Based on a true story, “All About Love” signaled an effort by Ann Hui to focus on the issues bisexuals face in Hong Kong (at the time) through an approach, though, that is quite commercial as the movie unfolds as an ensemble romantic comedy/drama.

Follow the Ann Hui Project by clicking on the image below

Macy is a bisexual solicitor, who is even being shamed by her lesbian friends for her changes in the sex of her partners, while also being pregnant as the storu begins. Soon, she stumbles upon old flame Anita at a pregnancy seminar, with her being in the exact same situation (pregnant and bisexual). The two start bonding again as they narrate to each other how they came to be with child, and soon they rekindle their relationship. What they are doing with their upcoming babies, however, as much as the presence of the “donors...

Guo Jingming’s L.O.R.D.: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties Set for 3D Release by the End of September
L.O.R.D.: Legend of the Ravaging Dynasties

As China steps into the 3D animation and sci-fi fantasy genre, L.O.R.D.: Legends of Ravaging Dynasties aims to make a strong impression.

Based on a novel of the same title by Guo Jingming, the film spotlights a magical land called Odin which is separated into four counties – water, fire, wind, and earth. In each county lives a group of soul masters who protect the land with their powers from others seeking more power and domination.

L.O.R.D. is being touted as China’s most ambitious film project to date. Not only will it be the country’s first motion capture animation film (the entire movie is done in CGI) and first Western fantasy film, being handled mainly by Original Force with its CEO Harley Zhao personally supervising the animation. The production is also a...

Hardcore Comedy (2013) Movie Review
With the success of Pang Ho Cheung’s foul mouthed and hilarious “Vulgaria” having proved that rude and crude are still popular at the Hong Kong box office, it’s only natural that other film makers would follow suit. And so, up step directors Andy Lo, Henri Wong and Chong Siu Wing with the category III rated “Hardcore Comedy”, which as its title suggests, aims for raucous pop culture laughs and unfettered bawdiness. Split into three linked stories and revolving around sex, drugs, superheroes and more, the film has a cast packed with attractive faces, including Dada Chan (“Vulgaria”), Michelle Wai (“Girl$”), Christine Kuo (“Lan Kwai Fong 2”), Kelvin Kwan (“Tales from the Dark 2”), Oscar Leung (“Young and Dangerous Reloaded”) and William Chan (“Triad”). The film opens with Henri Wong’s “Shocking Wet Dreams”, in which a couple of college losers (Kelvin Kwan and Terence Siufay) are forced by a...

Triad (2012) Movie Review
There’s no denying that recent years have been lean times for fans of triad and Hong Kong gang action, though there’s finally a splash of neon light at the end of the tunnel with the aptly named “Triad”. Appropriately for such a uniquely local and Hong Kong genre, the film was produced by the same team responsible for the “Lan Kwai Fong” duology and “Girl$”, and was written and directed by Daniel Chan, who also helmed Wong Jing’s soon to be seen “Young and Dangerous” reboot. As expected, the film showcases a cast of young up and coming talent as the rising gangsters, headlined by Sun Boyz singer William Chan (“Overheard”) and including Derek Tsang (“The Thieves”), Deep Ng (“The Viral Factor”) and Michelle Wai (“Lives in Flames”), plus veterans Patrick Tam (“The Detective 2”) and Irene Wan (“Exodus”). The plot charts the rise of young William (William Chan...

Triad Trailer Delivers Old School Hong Kong Gangster Thrills
Emperor Motion Pictures has just released a trailer for its forthcoming gangster drama, Triad, and it looks like a real blast from the past. Clearly set in the present day, Triad nevertheless exudes an old school 90s vibe with its trio of young wannabes engaging in all number of bloody turf wars on the streets of Mong Kok when not chasing girls, getting gang tattoos or declaring their undying loyalty to each other. The film's Category III rating clearly isn't simply for graphic triad activity either, as was the case for Johnnie To's Election, as Daniel Chan's film looks incredibly violent and brimming with chopper action. William Chan, Patrick Tam and Eric Tsang's son Derek head up the cast, which also includes Michelle Wai and Irene...
