‘No Soy Sauce!’: Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Get Jiro’ Introduces Future Where Chefs Have the Most Power – and a Brand New Catchphrase
Image
Based on Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel, Adult Swim’s upcoming animated series “Get Jiro” welcomes the audience into a world where people will literally kill themselves to get into good restaurants.

“The only thing they actually enjoy anymore is eating, so chefs in the future have the most power. They’re like influencers, warlords and drug dealers – all the good things together,” said Peter Girardi, EVP at Warner Bros. Animation at an Annecy Festival presentation.

Beloved chef, author and host, Bourdain passed away in 2018. He wrote “Get Jiro!” with Joel Rose, with art by Langdon Foss. “Tony was a huge fan of Japanese film and television, manga, anime and all the big directors, like Ozu and most importantly, Kurosawa,” added Girardi, presenting the show at Annecy.

In the series, showrun by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, who executive produce with Jordan Blum, sushi chef Jiro will need to face...

Creature Commandos Season 2 Is Being Fast-Tracked By DC Studios According To Showrunner Dean Lorey
Image
Last year, DC Studios launched the Dcu with Creature Commandos. The animated series received rave reviews when it launched and a second season was announced before the finale aired.

In an interview with The Direct about Harley Quinn season 5, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey confirmed that the next batch of episodes is being fast-tracked by DC Studios and Max.

"I mean, it's still early days, but we are actively working on breaking the season and starting to figure that out," he explained. "So it's definitely moving forward. I mean, it's like, they put it on a fast track, and they seem to mean it. So, yeah, we're in it."

It's clearly still very early days for Creature Commandos season 2. Plus, with Superman and Peacemaker season 2 in post-production, it might be tough for creator James Gunn to find the time to write the series as quickly as some fans would like.

James Gunn Clears Up Confusion Over Creature Commandos Season 2 Scripts
Image
DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently responded to fan concerns about the scripts for Creature Commandos Season 2. This comes after he previously cleared up Creature Commandos' Man-Bat rumors.

Gunn brought up the subject in a post on Threads in response to a fan who asked, "Since Cc Season 2 has been greenlit, does that mean the script has already been finished?" The filmmaker promptly cleared up any misconceptions, saying, "No, when I say we only green-light scripts that are finished, that doesn't apply to second seasons of television series."

James Gunn Clears Creature Commandos' Man-Bat Rumors
Image
DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently cleared up a Man-Bat misconception about Creature Commandos. This comes after Gunn revealed scrapped Creature Commandos characters.

Gunn brought this subject upon Bluesky, in response to a fan question, "Man-Bat wasn't going to be in [Creature Commandos]," he wrote."He's merely one of the many characters I considered. And yes, I'd be disappointed if we never see Mb in the Dcu." Prior to this, Gunn delved into the fate of Clayface in Creature Commandos, professing, "The reports of Clayface's death have been greatly exaggerated. He is quite mushy though."

Creature Commandos: James Gunn Reveals The Characters We Didn't Get To See Join Task Force M
Image
Creature Commandos saw Rick Flag Sr. lead a team comprised of The Bride, G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, Nina Mazursky, and Weasel.

Despite the fact even the most die-hard DC readers might not have been overly familiar with the show's leads, Task Force M quickly struck a chord with fans. Now, creator and writer James Gunn has revealed some familiar - and not-so-familiar - names who failed to make the cut.

"I definitely considered Wolfpack, and, especially, Man-Bat (one of my faves)," the filmmaker told a fan on Threads. "But I knew I wanted to tell Weasel's story so it felt like too many rabid and fuzzy characters."

"I considered Vincent Velcoro but wanted to choose a 'creature' far outside the usual roster from another part of DC - so I went with Dr. Phosphorous instead. I also considered Solomon Grundy, another favorite, but was pretty set on Frankenstein," Gunn concluded.

James Gunn Touches Upon Clayface's Fate After Creature Commandos
Image
DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently delved into the fate of Clayface in Creature Commandos. This comes after Creature Commandos star Indira Varma touched upon the Bride's Dcu future following the Season 1 finale.

Gunn brought this subject up over on Bluesky, professing to an inquiring fan, "The reports of Clayface's death have been greatly exaggerated. He is quite mushy though." Putting the spotlight on Creature Commandos itself, Warner Bros. Animation executive producer Rick Morales and EVP of special programming Peter Giarardi delved into how Creature Commandos balances its characters in October, with Girardi avowing at the time that there's "a lot of humor in this at the same time, and there's a lot of pathos," because one does get glimpses into who each of these characters are, going on to further note that once one does come around, it's very touching "in the same way The Guardians [of the Galaxy] was."

James Gunn Addresses Clayface's Dcu Status After His Apparent Death In Creature Commandos
Image
In Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein squared off with Clayface, and the former seemingly killed the shapeshifter after electrocuting him.

Clayface's remains were still splattered across the room when Amanda Waller showed up and he looked very dead. However, Creature Commandos was produced before James Gunn greenlit Mike Flanagan's Clayface movie - set for release on September 11, 2026 - and that now complicates things somewhat.

There have been multiple versions of the villain and Gunn has set the record straight by suggesting Clayface managed to survive that run-in with his fellow monster.

"The reports of Clayface’s death have been greatly exaggerated," he told a fan on social media. "He is quite mushy though."

The Clayface we met was a bit of a creep (who seemed to take great delight in talking about Amazons being lesbians). We're not sure how much of that personality will make it...

Creature Commandos Is Now "Certified Fresh" As Final Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Revealed
Image
Creature Commandos debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a perfect 100% score which, at the time, was based on just 10 reviews. Well, the first season has concluded and we now have a final score for the first Dcu TV series: a "Certified Fresh" 95%.

The Max TV series has received widespread acclaim from the start and this leaves Creature Commandos level with The Penguin (95%), another series James Gunn's DC Studios played an active role in developing.

95% also means Creature Commandos is in the same ballpark as The Dark Knight (94%), Superman: The Movie (93%), Peacemaker (93%), and The Suicide Squad (90%). DC Studios' documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, sts at 98%.

While Creature Commandos isn't quite as high-profile as this summer's Superman reboot, this is precisely what DC Studios and James Gunn needed. Not only should it dispel some of the scepticism surrounding this reboot but it suggests the Dcu is in the right hands with...

Creature Commandos Star Zoë Chao Breaks Down Nina's Shocking Role In The Season Finale - Spoilers
Image
In the Creature Commandos season finale, as Princess Ilana goes for a morning swim, The Bride tells Nina that she's the one who must go into the water and kill the woman destined to bring about the end of the world.

However, just as Nina is about to deliver the killing blow, Weasel runs into the water to warn the Princess. The distraction is enough for Ilana to spot Nina, disarm her, and repeatedly stab the most pure-hearted member of Task Force M to death.

It's a tragic end for a great character and actor Zoë Chao has now broken her silence on Nina's shocking demise.

"I'm like, what compelling storytelling, James Gunn, does it again," she said of her reaction to learning Nina would die in the finale. "He gets you right in the heart. You often, in stories like this, lose your favorite characters sometimes, or the ones...

Creature Commandos: James Gunn Talks Return Of The Suicide Squad's [Spoiler] And Teases Season 2 Plans
Image
In the season finale of Creature Commandos, Amanda Waller has The Bride take charge of Belle Reve's "Non-Human Internment Division" as the new leader of Task Force M.

With Rick Flag Sr. busy elsewhere and Nina sadly gone, the team now looks a little different and filmmaker James Gunn broke down that roster in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes.

Creature Commandos Post-Credits Scene Explained (And How The Finale Sets Up Season 2) - Spoilers
Image
The Creature Commandos finale is utterly heartbreaking - you can read our full recap here - but there is a post-credits scene and it brings some levity to an otherwise very intense 28 minutes of television.

Earlier in the episode, titled "A Very Funny Monster," Eric Frankenstein attempts to reunite with The Bride so he can share Rick Flag Sr.'s message about the Princess. Before he can utter more than a few words, she guns him down and spits on his remains.

However, in a post-credits scene, it's revealed that Eric managed to survive his wounds. In fact, he's shacked up with another gypsy woman - seemingly the one who spied on The Bride in the two-part series premiere - and is heavily bandaged.

Eric is still obsessed with the love of his life and argues that the way she attacked him is surely just another indication that The Bride feels the same way.

Creature Commandos' Penultimate Episode Reveals First Look At Gotham City And The Dcu's [Spoiler]
Image
In today's episode of Creature Commandos - you can read our full recap of "Priyatel Skelet" here - we pay a visit to Gotham City and get our first proper look at the Dcu's Batman.

With Doctor Phosphorus determined to become Gotham's new Kingpin of Crime, his hopes are dashed when Batman appears above him. We don't see the fight that follows but it's safe to assume that the Dark Knight was responsible for the former scientist ending up in A.R.G.U.S. custody.

This Batman is pretty bulky and he has both a utility belt and what many fans are convinced is his classic grey and blue costume from the comics. Whether this design is an indication of what Gunn has planned for the Dcu's Dark Knight remains to be seen.

However, there's not much of a resemblance between this Batman and Robert Pattinson's version of...

James Gunn On Why Max’s ‘Creature Commandos’ Has A Weekly Episode Release & Not A Binge Release Like Netflix
Image
James Gunn revealed why Creature Commandos opted for a weekly episode release on Max, not a binge release like Netflix.

On the heels of the second season renewal of the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation title, Gunn replied to a fan who asked why the first season was not released in its entirety on the streamer.

“It affords a quality show an opportunity to be discussed and grow from week to week,” Gunn shared on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. “[Creature Commandos] has gotten more popular from episode to episode because of the positive discussion around it and has cultivated an enthusiastic audience.”

He continued, “If we had dropped all the episodes at once who knows what would have happened. I will likely always be in the one-a-week camp for our shows. For people who want to binge all at once they can wait until the end of the season.

‘Creature Commandos’ Scores Early Season 2 Renewal as the New DC Universe Takes Form
Image
Warner Bros. Discovery just made its first move into continuing the new DC Universe. James Gunn’s adult animated series “Creature Commandos” will be returning for Season 2.

The renewal announcement was made ahead of the series’ fifth episode. Season 1’s finale will premiere on Max Jan. 9. The series follows a secret team of incarcerated monsters who are recruited for missions that are too dangerous for humans. When everything else fails, “they’re your last, worst option,” a logline reads.

“Creature Commandos” is far from the first DC adult animated series to exist as Max is also home to “Harley Quinn” and “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!” However, it’s notable in what it means for DC’s onscreen future. The first building block of the new on-screen DC Universe will get a second season.

Max has renewed its adult animated series Creature Commandos for a second season. The pickup comes midway through the show’s seven-episode first season, which premiered Dec. 5.

The series, created by DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn, is the first title to be released in the DC Universe continuity, which will continue when Superman hits movie theaters next summer. Creature Commandos Star Maria Bakalova Addresses Concerns Over Princess Ilana's Age In Dcu Series
Image
The Dceu is dead, but not everyone is willing to let it go without a fight. James Gunn and DC Studios' plans continue to face harsh criticism on social media, with this week's Superman reveal hijacked by bizarre AI-generated images, for example.

One of the wildest claims we've seen relates to Maria Bakalova's Princess Ilana in Creature Commandos. There are those who, for some reason, argue that the character is underage, despite the fact she's played by a 28-year-old in the animated Dcu series.

Screen Rant asked the Bulgarian actor about the Princess' age in a recent interview to which she said, "I haven't really spoken about this directly, but I got the call from James [when he was] writing this character, thinking about me playing this character, which means that [she] probably is going to be around my age, late 20s, 27-28, a little bit before 30."

"So she gets to [have the] innocence of,...

A promo for next week's episode of Creature Commandos, "Chasing Squirrels," puts Weasel front and center. Prior to this, G.I. Robot took center stage in a promo for this week's episode, "Cheers to the Tin Man."

The promo begins with Weasel's lawyer avowing that Weasel is innocent, to which Rick Flag Sr. professes, "I thought he killed 27 children." When the lawyer conveys that Weasel was accused of killing 8 children, Rick Flag Sr. sarcastically asserts, "Oh, then he's a saint." Later, the lawyer asks Weasel if any of the photographs in front of him mean anything to him, which is followed by a police officer shooting at Weasel. The promo ends with Circe showing Amanda Waller, Rick Flag Sr. and John Economos the future and Waller screaming.

Creature Commandos: James Gunn Talks Sgt. Rock's Dcu Debut And Teases Future Plans For The Metal Men
Image
In this week's episode of Creature Commandos (you can read our full recap here), we learned that G.I. Robot served alongside Sgt. Rock and Easy Company during World War II.

Challengers director Luca Guadagnino is expected to helm a Sgt. Rock movie starring Daniel Craig, though Maury Sterling (Homeland) lends his voice to the character in this animated series. While DC Studios plans to have the same actors take on their respective roles across animation and live-action, that only applies to major parts and leaves the door open to Craig, for example, taking over in a feature.

In a new interview, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey explained why he wanted Easy Company to make an appearance in the show.

"One of the reasons we wanted to include them is because it's one of G.I. Robot's most favourite memories," he said. "When he's asked who his friends are, it's the boys from Easy Company.

Today's episode of Creature Commandos puts the spotlight on G.I. Robot and ends with Circe's defeat at the hands of Task Force M. As we explained in our recap, the Amazon warns the team that by stopping her from killing the Princess, they've doomed the world.

In a first look at next Thursday's "Chasing Squirrels," we see that Weasel is also set to receive the origin story treatment. However, in the latter half of this promo, Circe gives Amanda Waller a glimpse at the Dcu's future...and we see a lot of dead heroes.

Superman, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, Starfire, and Robin are all shown, but the biggest news contained here is our first glimpse at the Dcu's Wonder Woman.

She's wearing a comic-accurate costume, with trunks similar to those worn by Lynda Carter in the 1970s TV series (and during her earlier comic book appearances). The hero's headpiece is also shown,...

Creature Commandos Creator James Gunn Releases BTS Footage Of Frank Grillo And Maria Bakalova's Sex Scene
Image
Like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker before it, Creature Commandos is an R-Rated comic book adaptation. There's bloody violence, swearing, and in the second episode, a sex scene featuring Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. and Maria Bakalova's Princess Ilana.

It's pretty tame in the grand scheme of things but a moment which could have major consequences in future episodes of the first Dcu TV series.

Talking at the New York Comic Con in October, Grillo said, "Maria [Bakalova] and I, we have a very steamy, X-rated kind of scene, which I watched with my 16-year-old son - fairly traumatic."

Gunn then chimed in to say, "Just for the record, X-rated is pushing it," to which Grillo responded, "It’s a hard R. Come on, it’s a hard R, you can say that. It’s 4,000 of our closest friends. Anyway, it was a lot of fun."

"I got the best video ever,...

'I Was Created to Kill Nazis': G.I. Robot Takes Center Stage in Creature Commandos Promo
Image
G.I. Robot takes center stage in a promo for next week's episode of Creature Commandos, "Cheers to the Tin Man." Before this, a trailer teased the deaths of two major Dcu heroes.

The promo begins with the Creature Commandos and Alexi getting ready to rescue the Bride and Nina Mazursky, with Dr. Phosphorous and G.I. Robot bursting through walls. Later, someone professes that G.I. Robot is a killing machine, which is followed by G.I. Robot avowing, "I was created to kill Nazis." As the promo comes to an end, viewers are treated to such scenes as a fellow soldier conveying, "Cheers to the Tin Man," and G.I. Robot in a prison cell.

Creature Commandos Clip Spotlights Anya Chalotra's Circe in Battle With The Bride
Image
The Bride of Frankenstein battles Circe in a Creature Commandos clip. This comes after a piece of Creature Commandos fan art put the spotlight on a live-action Bride.

Shared onto the Dcu Brief X account, the clip begins with the Bride pushing Nina Mazursky out of the way and opening fire on Circe, who turns the bullets into butterflies, to which the Bride avows, "Frickin' magic." As the clip comes to an end, the Bride throws a truck at Circe, then punches Circe into a wall.

Creature Commandos: James Gunn Reveals What The World Knows About Wonder Woman And Themyscira - Spoilers
Image
In the season premiere of Creature Commandos, we learn that Circe is leading a group called the "Sons of Themyscira." The Amazon sorceress is using them to attack a small Eastern European country called Pokolistan, but believes herself to be Themyscira's rightful leader.

A news report reveals that she intends to lead the Sons there to conquer her former home, though it's clear from the report that people aren't 100% sure whether the island exists. In other words, even with Circe on the loose, both Amazons and Themyscira are considered a myth.

Tellingly, there's zero mention of Wonder Woman during this report, leaving fans to wonder whether Diana Prince is active in the Dcu.

In a new interview, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey said, "I think people are aware of Wonder Woman. So yeah, I think there's some belief that it exists, but I don't know how worldwide known it is.

Creature Commandos Spoiler Discussion And Poll: What Did You Think About The First Dcu TV Series?
Image
While last year's Hollywood strikes slowed things down a little, 2024 has seen DC Studios get off to a strong start. Both The Penguin and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story have received rave reviews, but what of the first project set in the Dcu?

The first two episodes of Creature Commandos premiered on Max yesterday and, well, there were plenty of huge talking points. From Circe's debut to Rick Flag Sr.'s place in the Dcu and the formation of Task Force M, the show may be animated, but it still feels like an incredibly important addition to the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate.

Critics have heaped praise on Creature Commandos but now it's time for you, ComicBookMovie.com's readers, to share your ratings.

Creature Commandos "Certified Fresh" On Rotten Tomatoes As The DC Studios' Audience Score Is Revealed
Image
The first two episodes of Creature Commandos premiered on Max yesterday and the first Dcu project has just been "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with 93%.

Audiences have also weighed in on the review aggregator, awarding the DC Studios TV series a solid 81%. This week has seen a resurgence of the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement on social media, with Dceu fans back to campaigning for David Ayer's Suicide Squad to be released in its original form.

That has 26% from critics and 58% from moviegoers; Man of Steel, meanwhile, which launched the Dceu in 2013, sits at 57% and 75%.

Comparisons aside, Creature Commandos' "Critics Consensus" reads, "Bearing writer James Gunn's trademark penchant for kooky humor and lovable characters, Creature Commandos marks an auspicious debut for the Dcu."

DC Studios is having a good run on Rotten Tomatoes so far; documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98% and The Penguin resides at 95%.

Creature Commandos Features The Dcu's First R-Rated Sex Scene - And You Can Watch It Here!
Image
The first two episodes of Creature Commandos premiered on Max today and, well, there are plenty of big talking points. Whether it's how old Rick Flag Sr. was when his son was conceived or those hints about Wonder Woman's future, James Gunn has started laying the groundwork for the new Dcu in a huge way.

However, there's another moment that's receiving a lot of attention on social media: the Dcu's first-ever sex scene! It's not that explicit in the grand scheme of things, but it certainly pushes the boundaries.

Funnily enough, the episode features another sex scene when The Bride and Dr. Frankenstein later give in to their mutual attraction.

Talking at the New York Comic Con in October, Frank Grillo said, "Maria [Bakalova] and I, we have a very steamy, X-rated kind of scene, which I watched with my 16-year-old son - fairly traumatic." Gunn chimed in to say,...

Creature Commandos Trailer Features Dcu Debuts Of Superman, Peacemaker, Starfire And More - Spoilers
Image
Following the two-episode premiere of Creature Commandos earlier today, we have a new "weeks ahead" trailer for the Max series which features some pretty sizeable spoilers for the DC Studios TV series.

The focus is primarily on Task Force M's battle with Circe, though the sneak peek spoils the fact she's eventually captured by A.R.G.U.S. and Amanda Waller.

By far the biggest talking point is an apparent glimpse into the future, with Superman crucified and heroes like Mister Terrific and Starfire impaled nearby. Beyond that rumoured Teen Titans movie, we've heard nothing about plans for the latter in the Dcu so her inclusion here is massively intriguing.

Peacemaker is also shown dead on the ground, and this is one heck of a way to give us a first look at these characters in the Dcu. Common sense says this is just a possible future rather than...

Creature Commandos Fan Art Puts the Spotlight on a Live-Action Bride
Image
A piece of Creature Commandos fan art by Felipe Illa puts the spotlight on a live-action Bride of Frankenstein. This comes after Creature Commandos star and Rick Flag Sr. actor Frank Grillo revealed a big spoiler about Rick Flag Sr.

Shared onto Instagram, the artwork in question sees three images of the Bride, the first being a blowup of the second, while the third has a darker tint to it. In the upload's description, Illa conveyed, "Who will be next? Working for fun, okay? Creature Commandos will be releasing soon! Why not bring forward the Live-Actions look of the characters? Creature Commandos Finally Explains Rick Flag Sr./Rick Flag Jr. Age Difference And Makes [Spoiler] Canon
Image
One of The Suicide Squad's most shocking moments saw Peacemaker brutally murder Rick Flag Jr. That came after Amanda Waller tasked Christopher Smith with destroying a hard drive revealing the U.S. Government's links to the inhuman experiments being carried out on the island of Corto Maltese.

James Gunn was at the helm of that movie and, as new DC Studios co-ceo, he's introduced Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos as an A.R.G.U.S. agent and the leader of Task Force M.

However, fans have long argued that the casting of Frank Grillo makes no sense because he's 59 and Rick Flag Jr. actor Joel Kinnaman is 45, a mere 14-year age difference. It's a nitpicky complaint and one the series premiere of Creature Commandos wastes no time in addressing.

Talking to Pokolistan's Princess Ilana Rostovic, Flag Sr. reveals he had his son when he was only 18. Like his father, Flag Jr.

Creature Commandos Premiere Reveals Status Of Themyscira And Whether Wonder Woman Is Active In Dcu - Spoilers
Image
When DC Studios unveiled the "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate, many fans were shocked to learn of plans for a prequel TV series set on Themyscira in place of another Wonder Woman movie (especially as Superman: Legacy and The Brave and the Bold were announced).

It's since been confirmed that Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman 3 won't be happening (its status was unclear at the time), while Gunn has repeatedly said that the Themyscira series remains in active development.

In the season premiere of Creature Commandos, we learn that Circe is leading a group called the "Sons of Themyscira." They're basically misogynists, incels, and right-wing nuts, but the rogue Amazonian and sorceress is using them to attack a small Eastern European country called Pokolistan.

In the comics, the nation formed a secret alliance with President Lex Luthor's administration and Superman later encountered a new version of General Zod there.

Creature Commandos Fan Art Imagines Indira Varma's Bride Of Frankenstein...In Live-Action!
Image
Creature Commandos arrives on Max later this week, but what does the future hold in store for Task Force M beyond the seven-episode series?

That remains to be seen, though James Gunn has already hinted at a second season (we'd imagine that hinges on how big of an audience the show's debut outing receives). If nothing else, we expect these eclectic characters to eventually show up in live-action with Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. already confirmed as the first of them to do so in next year's Superman and Peacemaker season 2.

Thanks to concept artist Felipe Illa, we have an idea of what Indira Varma's Bride Of Frankenstein could look like in a future live-action movie or TV show.

In fact, this piece was so convincing that many DC fans on social media were left convinced it was real and perhaps released to promote Creature Commandos' premiere. While that's not the case,...

‘Creature Commandos’ Kicks Off a New DC Universe — and Fresh Looks for Some Familiar Faces
Image
The hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change with a new DC cinematic universe. But rather than start with a Justice League movie, a Superman movie, or even a Green Lantern TV show, the first project from James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios is an adult animated series based on a 1980 team of monsters that are virtually as unknown as Rocket Raccoon and Groot were before “Guardians of the Galaxy.” And yet, “Creature Commandos” will set the stage for a new “Superman” movie, a new Justice League team, and a new DC canon. And Gunn has been working on it since before he was tapped to co-lead DC Studios.

“I think the move to the new canon made James look more carefully at some of the background characters and other details that he’d have to ensure could nicely dovetail with where he was going,...

Man Of Steel vs. Creature Commandos: How The First Dceu And Dcu Projects Compare On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
This Thursday on Max, DC Studios' Dcu begins with the animated Creature Commandos. The first two episodes will launch for fans, though critics have already watched all seven chapters of the show.

While the series marks something of a soft launch for the DC Universe, it will be our first glimpse at what James Gunn has planned for the franchise moving forward (the real test is still going to be next summer's Superman).

As we write this, Creature Commandos has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 18 reviews; only one is negative and that opines, "If DC was going to drop the nihilistic and brutal aspects of DC’s previously shared continuity, that’s not happening here. If anything, Creature Commandos doubles down on the old grimdark Dceu vibe rather than forging a new path."

The Dcu being compared to the Dceu is likely the last thing DC Studios wants but...

Creature Commandos' Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed And It Breaks A Huge DC Record
Image
As we reported a little earlier, the review embargo for Creature Commandos has lifted and critics have nothing but good things to say about DC Studios' first Dcu project (which arrives on Max later this week with its first two episodes).

The Max TV series has received widespread acclaim, resulting in a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While that score could change in the coming days as more verdicts are counted, this strong start means Creature Commandos has broken a huge DC record.

With 100%, it's the best-reviewed DC Comics adaptation ever, topping the likes of The Penguin (95%), The Dark Knight (94%), Superman: The Movie (93%), Peacemaker (93%), and The Suicide Squad (90%). DC Studios' documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, has 98%.

While Creature Commandos isn't quite as high-profile as next year's Superman reboot, this is precisely what DC Studios and James Gunn needed. Not only should it dispel some of the scepticism surrounding this...

Creature Commandos First Clip Teases Task Force M's Hilarious Dynamic And References The Suicide Squad
Image
Creature Commandos is very nearly upon us and the animated Max series promises to give comic book fans their first taste of DC Studios' new Dcu.

We'll be sharing our review of the series tomorrow, but in the meantime, the first clip from the show has been released. In that, Rick Flag Sr. takes the members of Task Force M on their first mission, with the dysfunction between them on full display.

G.I. Robot just wants to kill Nazis, while everyone else...well, they don't want to be there. As for Weasel, he's not enjoying his helicopter ride and that leads to Flag referencing the events of The Suicide Squad and the monster's previous visit to Corto Maltese alongside Task Force X (which saw him nearly drown).

Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey was recently asked how this series differs from his previous DC work.

"Harley Quinn and Kite Man are both pure comedies,...

Creature Commandos: Frank Grillo Touches Upon His Differing Marvel and DC Experiences
Image
Creature Commandos star and Rick Flag Sr. actor Frank Grillo recently delved into his differing Marvel and DC experiences. This comes after Grillo professed that his character is the Nick Fury of the Dcu.

Grillo brought this subject up in an interview with Cinema Blend, conveying that Marvel "[has] been in trouble a little bit" because the company got "way over their skis, so to speak." He went on to further note, "And I also think what [DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran] are doing, where they're hiring one actor to do live-action and to do animation the voice work it creates a cohesiveness, and an understanding of the character. But, more importantly, [Gunn] understands how to utilize them in each story."

Creature Commandos Poster Revealed As Showrunner Dean Lorey Addresses Possible Season 2 Plans
Image
Creature Commandos will be our first taste of James Gunn and DC Studios' new Dcu. While the review embargo doesn't lift until December 2 (we'll share our verdict then), early word on the animated series is very positive.

Whether that will translate to all-important streaming viewership remains to be seen, though DC Studios is riding high after the success of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story and The Penguin. As a result, interest in the show appears high.

Now, Creature Commandos showrunner Dean Lorey has addressed the possibility of a second season. "Yeah, we absolutely want to do a second season," he told Screen Rant. "There's no particular five-season plan or anything like that. But we definitely want to do another season."

"You will see, at the end of the first season, some of the characters that might be part of that, and there's a lot of fun to come, I hope.
