The horror! ‘Sinners’ and ‘The Substance’ lead Fangoria Chainsaw Awards nominations of year’s scariest offerings
Image
The grossest, goriest, and most gratuitous of the year are set to be feted at the 2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.

The Chainsaw Awards are also among the first opportunities for this year's potential awards frontrunner, Sinners, to flex its muscles. (Metaphorical muscles. Michael B. Jordan's are currently streaming on HBO Max.) Ryan Coogler's period vampire thriller is in contention for Best Wide Release — where it will compete with 28 Years Later — and boasts a total of ten nominations in all.

With an eligibility window that ran from July 2024 to June 2025, the Chainsaw Awards also include some of last year's awards contenders, including The Substance, which tied Sinners for nominations.

Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ and Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ Lead Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards Nominations
Image
“Sinners” and “The Substance” lead the nominations for Fangoria’s 2025 Chainsaw Awards, which recognizes standout achievements in horror across film, television and gaming.

“This year we continue the new tradition of pitting the second half of last year with the first half of this year in a cage match of cinematic carnage,” Phil Nobile Jr., Fangoria Eic, said in a statement. “Like the Grammys, but gorier. It’s made for a rather chaotic list of nominees, and we expect the voting to be vicious and voluminous.”

“Sinners” and “The Substance” each earned 10 nominations, competing in the same categories for best wide release, best cinematography, best score, best director, best screenplay, best costume design, and best lead and supporting performances. Nominations also include “Strange Darling,” Cuckoo,” “The Ugly Stepsister,” 28 Years Later” and “Longlegs.” Other categories include best streaming premiere, best kill and best creature FX.

Sinners Makes History With New Viewing Option for Streaming Debut on Max
Image
After its theatrical success, Ryan Coogler's hit film Sinners is now streaming on Max. This also makes history by offering a new viewing option that's never been done for a streaming release.

Per Warner Bros. Discovery, Sinners has two viewing options available on Max: the theatrical cut and the Black American Sign Language (Basl) version. It's the first time that a streaming service has exclusively debuted a film interpreted in Basl. Wbd has described Basl as a "distinct dialect of American Sign Language (Asl) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances."

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach," Wbd's SVP of Global Product Management, Naomi Waibel, said in a statement. "Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve. Sinners...

Sinners Bought A "Warehouse Full" Of Costumes From Marvel Studios Once Meant For Period Blade Movie
Image
When the first trailer for Black Panther director Ryan Coogler's Sinners was released, many people pointed out that it had, in some ways, left Marvel Studios' long-delayed Blade movie surplus to requirement.

Coogler's horror epic was a surprise hit, grossing $364 million worldwide and receiving widespread critical acclaim. However, it being a vampire movie led by a Black actor (with a 1920s setting) wasn't the only thing it had in common with Blade.

During an interview with ScreenCrush, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian shared a "fun Marvel easter egg" when he revealed that many of the costumes used by background actors in the movie were originally planned for Blade when it was being developed as a period piece.

"[Costume designer] Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting," he revealed. "At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but...

“I’m just stupid that way”: Why James Cameron’s ‘Ghosts of Hiroshima’ Won’t Repeat Oppenheimer’s Moral Lapse
Image
Avatar director James Cameron finally decided to watch Christopher Nolan’s 2023 masterpiece Oppenheimer, and he wasn’t impressed by what he saw. Although Cameron stated that he doesn’t like to comment on other people’s film-making process and films, Oppenheimer didn’t feel complete with Cameron.

Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus, the film depicted Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer coming to terms with the Atomic bomb that he developed, which was used on the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. James Cameron revealed to Deadline that despite the billion-dollar box office collection and seven Oscars, Christopher Nolan dodged the main subject in Oppenheimer.

There’s only one brief moment where he sees some charred bodies in the audience and then the film goes on to show how it deeply moved him. But I felt that it dodged the subject.

He further continued,

Distributed by Universal Studios, the film is already being set up to generate as much heat as possible, with the trailer being played in theaters before the screening of Jurassic World Rebirth. However, an online leak has sparked a frenzy of trailer breakdown and reaction videos from amateurs and critics alike.

Nolan’s Odyssey Teaser Springs Leak, Ignites Fan Frenzy
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
The first teaser for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey slipped onto social platforms early Tuesday, only a few hours after Universal Pictures rolled it out exclusively in cinemas ahead of Jurassic World Rebirth screenings, sending the studio scrambling with takedown requests while hashtags related to the leak trended worldwide.

The bootleg—filmed off-screen—features storm-lashed seas, a silhouetted Trojan horse and Matt Damon’s Odysseus adrift on wreckage, matching descriptions in official press notes that label the film a “mythic action epic” shot with next-generation IMAX cameras.

Universal and Nolan had intended to keep the 70-second clip confined to theaters for several weeks, mirroring the director’s marketing playbook on Oppenheimer and Tenet; executives now face a familiar dilemma of whether to accelerate an online launch or continue policing mirrors that reappear faster than they can be removed. Even so, analysts note that unauthorized circulation may boost awareness for a...

First Trailer Details Leak for Christopher Nolan’s Epic ‘The Odyssey’
Image
Christopher Nolan is taking on a whole new kind of story with The Odyssey, his latest movie that dives deep into ancient Greek mythology. It’s based on Homer’s famous poem, and it stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the king who’s trying to get back home after the Trojan War.

A leaked trailer description from Daniel Richtman on Patreon has given fans an early look at what to expect—and it sounds intense, dark, and emotional.

The trailer kicks off with a shot of the ocean. Matt Damon’s voice comes in with some narration, setting the tone. There’s a mention of Zeus, and we see close-up shots of waves hitting the beach. Then there’s a strange moment with men on horses riding fast toward a giant black object sitting on the shore, it looks like it might be a piece of a wrecked ship, maybe shaped like a horse.

Christopher Nolan is diving into Greek mythology for his next big movie, The Odyssey. This upcoming film is based on Homer’s classic poem and stars Matt Damon as the legendary Odysseus. According to a trailer description leaked by Daniel Richtman on Patreon, fans got their first look at what’s coming, and it sounds like a wild, emotional ride.

The trailer opens quietly with a shot of the ocean. You can hear Matt Damon narrating over the waves. There’s a mention of Zeus, and the camera shows some peaceful but eerie shots of the beach.

Then it shifts to something a bit more intense, men on horses charging toward a large black object on the shore. It kind of looks like a piece of a broken ship. The ocean is a big focus throughout the trailer, always in the background, mysterious and cold.

Later, we see Tom Holland,...

The most likely Oscars nominations from the first half of 2025
Image
Somehow, 2025 is halfway over, and as alarming as that might be, it does bring us all that much closer to another Oscar season. The first six months of the year featured not only some stellar films, but a handful of potential nominees that could linger in the minds of Academy voters.

While movies released in the first half of the year may generally have a harder time on ballots thanks to recency bias, we're only a few years removed from a Best Picture winner that opened in March.

With that in mind, here are a few early predictions for movies released from January to June that could go the distance and possibly ride it out to year-end awards.

Sinners — Best Picture

Let's get this one out of the way now. As the sun sets on the first half of 2025, it's not a question of whether Ryan Coogler's vampire thriller...

‘Sinners’ in Context: A Study of Influence and Coogler’s Legacy
Image
From Athlete to Auteur Ryan Coogler pursued his ambitions to be a football player well into college. However, while attending Saint Mary’s College of California, an English professor, Rosemary Graham, recognized his talent for storytelling and encouraged him to explore screenwriting. Coogler later transferred to Sacramento State and ultimately enrolled in the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he directed three short films: 'Locks' (2009), 'Fig' (2011), and 'The Sculptor' (2011), earning him critical recognition early on. Though Coogler transitioned from athlete to artist, the team-oriented mindset he developed as a football player has remained a defining element of his approach to the art form. From the start of his career, he has cultivated a creative circle that has grown with him, film after film. Actor Michael B. Jordan has starred in all five of Coogler’s feature films, prompting comparisons to legendary filmmaker-actor duos like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro,...

Christopher Nolan Movies Ranked: From Worst to Best
Image
It’s time to look at the work of one of the greatest directors of our generation: Christopher Nolan. How big is Nolan these days? Interstellar, a movie which was never among the director’s top grossers, hit IMAX screens last week for its tenth anniversary, and screenings have been selling out constantly. The fact is – Nolan makes movies that belong on the big-screen, and he’s one of the few directors who’s arguably become his own franchise. For proof of that, one need only look at the fact that he’s planning a new movie, and the cast is jampacked with A-listers, because Everyone wants to work with Nolan.

A caveat – our Christopher Nolan movies ranked list is just one person’s opinion, and his work is divisive. Everyone has their favourites (and least favourites), so I’m hoping this ranking will open up some discussion in the comments below.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners Hits Max Next Month, Director Debunks Sequel Rumors
Image
Speculation around a potential sequel to Sinners gained traction in late-May after anonymous X (formerly Twitter) scooper @MyTimeToShineH claimed a follow-up was already in the works. But a recent interview with director Ryan Coogler has firmly debunked that rumor.

Speaking with Ebony Magazine, Coogler explained that Sinners was designed as a self-contained story, not the start of a franchise. "I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that," he said, referencing his time helming Black Panther and Creed.

Following Coogler’s comments, the original tweet from @MyTimeToShineH was quietly deleted, with no acknowledgment of the retraction—an approach the scooper has used before when previous rumors didn’t pan out, including inaccurate claims about the Fantastic Four cast and Ms. Marvel's origin.

This situation serves as a reminder to take unverified scoop culture with caution and to rely...

The horror film centers on Jordan‘s twins who return to their hometown to escape their troubled lives, only to realize that an even bigger threat awaits them there.

He died about a year before I was born,” said Coogler shortly ahead of the film’s April release. “He was from Merrill, Mississippi and eventually moved to Oakland,...

‘Jaws’ at 50: 5 Blockbuster Lessons Modern Movies Still Steal
Image
On June 20, 1975, Universal rolled the dice on a young director named Steven Spielberg, a malfunctioning mechanical shark, and a modest beach thriller. The result, Jaws, changed the way studios make, market, and even think about movies. Half a century later, every summer tent-pole still carries its DNA. From Jurassic Park to A Quiet Place to this year’s Wolf Man, the fingerprints are easy to spot once you know where to look.

Below we share five lessons modern blockbusters keep borrowing from the great white grand-daddy of them all.

1. Show Less, Scare More

The Lesson: When in doubt, hide the monster and let imagination do the heavy lifting.

Spielberg didn’t plan to keep Bruce (the famously stubborn mechanical shark) off-camera; the prop simply wouldn’t cooperate. Forced improvisation turned into masterclass suspense. The audience only sees brief flashes – a dorsal fin slicing the surf, a floating half-sunken dock, a...

James Blake Brings ‘Sinners’ Song to Cannes Lions

As players from the media and marketing worlds gathered in the south of France for the 2025 Cannes Lions conference, brands jockeying for visibility can be found up and down the Croissette where hosted “beaches” draw both networkers and revelers. Offshore, however, are the ultra-exclusive events — among them, The Hollywood Reporter’s Wednesday afternoon Marketing Power Players event.

Held on the gargantuan Kismet yacht, owned by the Khan family, whose sports assets include the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, English Premier league club Fulham F.C. and All Elite Wrestling, the guest list included Activist Artists Management co-founder Bernie Cahill and Activate founder and CEO Michael J. Wolf, who co-hosted the event; Marcie Allen, president of Anzie Blue; Rare Beauty CMO Katie Welch; YouTube co-head creators and gaming Kim Larson; Dhar Mann Studios CEO Sean Atkins; The Macallan head of brand Sergio Cabello; and THR top marketers 2025 list members Bianca Franklin, global business developer,...

The Highest-Grossing WWII Movie Ever Made Is Still a Global Streaming Hit
Image
There have been plenty of iconic WWII movies released over the years, but the highest-grossing of them all has remained a streaming success for quite a while now. 2023 brought on the release of Oppenheimer, the most recent film from Christopher Nolan that not only won seven Oscars but also grossed $976 million at the global box office. Oppenheimer is currently streaming on Peacock in the U.S. and on Netflix globally, where it’s one of the most popular movies on the streamer, charting in countries such as Estonia, Greece, Latvia, and Lithuania. Oppenheimer’s $976 million box office haul is enough to make it the highest-grossing WWII movie of all time, ahead of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ($720 million) and Dunkirk ($509 million).

Oppenheimer is widely regarded as Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus. After earning nominations for Memento, Inception, and Dunkirk, Nolan finally received his first two Oscar wins for Oppenheimer.

'Sinners' Passes the 50-Year-Old Blockbuster Quentin Tarantino Called “The Greatest Film Ever Made” at the Domestic Box Office
Image
After nearly two months of release in theaters worldwide (and having debuted on PVOD platforms), director Ryan Coogler's Sinnershas notched what will likely be its last box office victory. Sinners is now the second-biggest horror movie in domestic box office history, having overtaken the half-century-old hit that literally invented the concept of summer blockbusters. Director Steven Spielberg's Jaws is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year; the movie featured Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw in the lead roles.

Director Quentin Tarantino is among its legions of fans, having described it on numerous occasions as "the greatest movie ever made." He said on the ReelBlend podcast a few years ago, "I think Jaws is the greatest movie ever made. Maybe not the greatest film. But it's the greatest movie ever made. And then there are other movies that can get in its rarefied air. But as far as a movie,...

Sinners: Standout "I Lied To You" Sequence Officially Released As Movie Climbs Domestic Box Office Chart
Image
Ryan Coogler's Sinners arrived on Digital earlier this week, but is still playing in a lot of theaters, and the movie has now become the second highest-grossing original live-action film at the domestic box office since 2010.

Christopher Nolan's Inception, released in 2010, still holds the top spot.

Inception (2010) — $292 million

Sinners (2025) — $275 million

Gravity (2013) — $274 million

Dunkirk (2017) — $189 million

A Quiet Place (2018) — $188 million

Interstellar (2014) — $188 million

Get Out (2017) — $176 million

Us (2019) — $175 million

Bridesmaids (2011) — $169 million

The Heat (2013) — $159 million

La La Land (2016) — $151 million

A recent rumor claimed that Warner Bros. was in the process of developing a Sinner sequel, but Coogler had previously suggested that he would have no interest in taking the helm of a follow-up.

“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,” the filmmaker told Ebony Magazine. “I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal...

‘Sinners’ Sinks Russell Crowe’s $160 Million 75% Rotten Tomatoes Biblical Epic
Image
Having recently debuted on digital following an unusually long theatrical window, Sinners retained a spot on the top 10 list at the domestic box office this weekend. The vampire movie has proven what an extended theatrical run can do for movies designed for the big screen, especially at a time when more and more studios are pushing titles onto PVOD mere days after their theatrical debuts. In recent times, Universal has earned flak for releasing underperformers such as The Fall Guyand Black Bag on digital earlier than expected. Largely speaking, however, movies that display box office potential are spared this fate.

Sinners bought time for itself thanks to a record-breaking opening weekend haul. Produced on a reported budget of $90 million, the movie has made an astonishing $270 million-plus from domestic theaters, and another $84 million from overseas markets. Despite the lower performance internationally, the film’s cumulative global haul stands at $357 million. Sinners...

Only A Single Marvel Franchise Has Ever Won Oscars—It’s Not Avengers Or Spider-Man – Guess Which One!
Image
Marvel Franchise’s Oscar Win (Photo Credit – Hotstar)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the most financially dominant and culturally influential franchises of the 21st century. Over the course of more than 15 years and dozens of interconnected films, it has built a legacy of global box office records, a massive fanbase, and endless spin-offs across TV, streaming, and merchandising. Yet, for all its popularity and reach, critical acclaim at the industry’s most prestigious award ceremony, the Academy Awards, has remained surprisingly elusive for Marvel.

Unlike other blockbuster franchises that have picked up Oscars for technical brilliance or even acting performances, the MCU’s relationship with the Academy has been relatively muted. Big budget visual effects films, especially those rooted in comic books, have traditionally struggled to earn respect from Oscar voters beyond categories like sound and effects.

And still, among the entire lineup of Marvel’s interconnected universe,...

Sinners Extended Scene Released As Ryan Coogler's Acclaimed Vampire Drama Arrives On Digital

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler's Sinners is now available on Digital devices, including Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Fandango at Home, and more. The film arrives on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD in high definition and standard definition on July 8.

Fandango has debuted an extended scene from the movie, which includes some additional footage of Smoke, Stack (Michael B. Jordan) and their crew getting the juke joint ready for its grand opening.

It's a nice sequence with great music (a staple of the movie), but it's easy enough to understand why it was trimmed down for the final cut.

Ryan Coogler Offers Disappointing Update on Possible 'Sinners' Sequel
Image
If you found yourself compelled by the journey of the Moore twins in Ryan Coogler's astounding 2025 horror film, then you might want to sit down for this. Despite it's monumental success, Sinners, as stated by Coogler, won't be getting a sequel anytime soon. The Warner Bros. horror behemoth has grossed more than $350 million at the box office, and the studio will no doubt be hoping to capitalize on this success. Nevertheless, the writer/director did not think of it as an opportunity to start a franchise. In fact, he made it because he wanted to stay away from franchise filmmaking. Despite several sequel rumors, it appears that Coogler is not planning to make Sinners 2.

In a recent conversation with Ebony magazine, Coogler opened up about his original plans for Sinners, and how he never thought of expanding the story into more than one film. "I never think about that,...

Sinners 2: Ryan Coogler Never Wanted a Sinners Sequel With Michael B. Jordan Even After Its $341 Million Success
Image
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners became the breakout hit of the year so far as the vampire horror original took the world by storm with its innovative storytelling and messaging. The Michael B. Jordan starrer saw him play two characters, twins, on screen. It was set in the 1930s in Mississippi and blended social themes of the time with the vampire genre.

Coogler created history with the film by securing an unorthodox deal, where the rights for the movie would revert back to him after a set number of years, giving him complete ownership over his material. While this might make plans for a sequel complicated, the Creed director reportedly had no plans for one while working on Sinners.

Star Wars and it's musical history with the Emmys
Image
On the heels of a critically acclaimed second season, it was announced that Andor had been submitted to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 23 different categories for the Emmy Awards. Two of those categories were for music, with composer Brandon Roberts for Music Composition for a Series and composer Nicholas Britell and showrunner Tony Gilroy for Original Music and Lyrics for the chilling song, "We are the Ghor."

The Star Wars franchise and its television series have a long history of being recognized by the Academy in the musical areas of production. Let's take a look back at it.

Kevin Kiner scored Star Wars: The Clone Wars during its run and received three nominations for his work in the music composition and directing categories. The last one was for work in the same category, but for a children's or animation program in 2021. Kiner also received a nomination for his...

Rumor: A Sequel To Ryan Coogler's Sinners Is In Development At Warner Bros.
Image
After the movie exceeded all expectations at the box office, we're hearing that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel to Ryan Coogler's Sinners.

The rumor comes our way via reliable scooper Mttsh, who simply says: "Sinners 2 is happening."

If you haven't watched Sinners yet, spoilers follow.

Though the movie tied up most of its plot threads and didn't necessarily leave itself open for a follow-up, the mid-credits scene did bring two key characters into modern times.

The sequence jumps forward to 1992, as we learn that Sammie went against his father's wishes and left Mississippi to start a successful career as a bluesman in Chicago. After a gig, Sammy is told that two old friends are waiting to see him, and in walks Stack and Mary, the only surviving vampires.

Stack tells his cousin that Smoke spared his life on the condition that he left Sammie alone and never pursued him.

Dunesday is coming: The risks and rewards of Avengers' clash with Dune 3
Image
In late June 2024, Denis Villeneuve sustained the momentum of his majestic sequel Dune: Part Two and announced that the never-attempted-nor-adapted Dune: Messiah will be released on December 18, 2026. While that seemed an eternity away, the red Sharpies came out and Dec. 18, 2026 was circled on calendars everywhere.

Thanks to Marvel Studios, the date is getting a little crowded. Evidently, the Russo brothers are having too much fun with the Marvel Cinematic Universe family reunion cast and pushed back both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars six months each to make time for post-production. That meant Secret Wars is moving from May 7 to Dec. 17, 2027, and Doomsday is moving from May 1, 2026 to... Dec. 18, 2026.

Wait, what?!

It's either a complete dunderheaded move or total hubris. Either way, this is going to make next year's winter blockbuster season so interesting!

Special features and specs have been revealed for the Sinners 4K Blu-ray release
Image
Ryan Coogler’s hit film Sinners has been making waves in IMAX theaters and it’s been announced that the horror flick will be coming to digital next week. Additionally, the big vampire blues party will be coming to your home with a 4K physical media release courtesy of Warner Bros. As for technical specs, you can expect a stellar presentation that offers native 4K 2160p resolution and Dolby Vision, HDR10 on the visual front, and Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on the audio side.

One further compelling element to this 4K Blu-ray release of Sinners is that it will have the shifting aspect ratio – which went from 2.76:1 to 1.43:1 in some scenes during the IMAX release – something cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw teased on social media a few weeks ago, thus presenting the film in a way that will duplicate the theatrical experience as best as possible for your home.
