Josh Wolk

Yahoo Lays Off Top Entertainment Journalists (Exclusive)
Layoffs are underway at Yahoo Entertainment as the struggling site trims entertainment news but leaves its celebrity coverage mostly intact, TheWrap has learned. The departures include executive entertainment editor Josh Wolk, movie reporter Meriah Doty, TV editor Dave Nemetz and many in the music department, according to people familiar with the situation. The Yahoo Celebrity team was largely spared. In early February, the company said it would be laying off 15 percent of its workforce, or about 6,000 positions, in a plan that also included selling and shuttering noncore business and exploring “strategic alternatives” — essentially putting a “for sale” sign outside Yahoo’s door.

Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
Behind AMC’s Post–Mad Men Game Plan (and Why There’s No End in Sight for The Walking Dead)
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
Late in the summer of 2013, as Breaking Bad was nearing the end of its run, AMC unleashed a flurry of announcements about its post–Walter White future. Within a space of just a few weeks, the network revealed plans for a prequel to Bad, green-lit development of a new chapter in The Walking Dead saga, and said that the final 15-episode season of its beloved signature drama Mad Men would be spread out over two years. To put it mildly, the internet was not impressed. Former head Vulture Josh Wolk, echoing sentiments heard all over social media at the time, bemoaned what he saw as a looming creative bankruptcy at the theretofore critically beloved channel: “Get it together, AMC,” read the headline on Wolk’s screed.Coming as they did in the wake of the commercial and critical failure of Low Winter Sun and the decidedly mixed reaction to the...

Watch: The Strokes Release Nostalgic, Lazy Video For New Single
Kristen Bell in Veronica Mars (2004)
From the "Veronica Mars" movie Kickstarter campaign to the upcoming return of "Arrested Development," 2013 has been one long bout of nostalgia. ("Girl Meets World"? Sure thing, says The Internet.) Which is why this new video for The Strokes' latest single, "All the Time," fits right in with the current pop-culture landscape: it's not so much a video as a montage of clips and concert footage designed to make Strokes fans remember The Strokes.

Put another way: "Oh, so we're already in the 'Greatest Hits' phase," wrote Amanda Dobbins at Vulture about the "All the Time" video. Indeed, though that's kind of the problem: The Strokes have a new album, "Comedown Machine," coming out on March 26, and it's likely that O.G. Strokes fans from that long-forgotten time period of the early '00s don't need any reminders of the band's relevance. Or maybe they do; after all, "Veronica Mars" only...

A Selection of Bruce Willis’s Exclamations in A Good Day to Die Hard
Earlier this week, Head Vulture Josh Wolk and I got into an argument over whether Die Hard 3 (With a Vengeance) or Die Hard 4 (Live Free or ... ) was the better film. I chose the former, because it is, and he chose the latter, because he likes ... hacking? At any rate, no one will ever have that argument about Die Hard 5 (A Good Day to ... ), because it is a terrible, terrible film. (Read our critic David Edelstein on the film here.) In addition to completing John McClane's transformation from everyman to superman (as we argue in this essay), it also turns him into a near-monosyllabic action hero. There is a bunch of dialogue where he talks about fatherhood and regret and stuff that is there to remind us that there are also people in this movie and not just helicopters, but much of Willis's...

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Vous avez un mess@ge (1998)
You’ve Got Mail Vs. Sleepless in Seattle: Fight!
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Vous avez un mess@ge (1998)
A few months ago, Vulture staffers discovered a terrifying truth about their noble leader: Josh Wolk does not like You've Got Mail. Horrified, staffers begged him to explain this insane position, and they later discovered that he prefers Sleepless in Seattle. Here, on Valentine's Day, Wolk and Margaret Lyons pit Ephron against Ephron in an exploration of the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan romance staples You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. Which is better? Which is truer? And do children really like the new Star Wars movies?Josh: A couple of years ago, when Mindy Kaling declared You’ve Got Mail the ultimate rom-com, I assumed it was just a personal, wrongheaded quirk — like children who prefer the Star Wars prequels over the original trilogy — but then in our staff meeting, a bunch of you began citing the movie yourselves as the ne plus ultra of romantic comedies. When...

Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Damon Wayans Jr., Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, and Jake Johnson in New Girl (2011)
The New Girl Debate: Is the Jess.Nick Romance Good or Bad?
Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Damon Wayans Jr., Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, and Jake Johnson in New Girl (2011)
Last night's New Girl was a Big Episode — and a polarizing one. Not all fans are 'shippers! Indeed, even among Vulture staffers, the episode was divisive. Josh Wolk and Margaret Lyons explore the two sides of last night's big smooch: Josh arguing against it, and Margaret arguing for it. Join us for this lively debate about the nature of sitcoms and gonorrhea metaphors. Margaret: Josh, which do you hate more: love or true love? I am so happy right now, I seriously cannot believe you are approaching this with anything other than a song in your heart. What is the matter with you? Josh: Hey, I love love. And I am not a fan of hate. (Guess where I stand on indifference? Meh.) But romance on sitcoms makes me nervous; it can work when it’s set up at the beginning and is built into the show (Sam and Diane...

Was The Hobbit Boring or Exciting? Two Vulture-ites Fight It Out
Our opinions are not monolithic at the Vulture offices. Sometimes bloggers and editors disagree about a movie, TV show, or band, and this healthy debate only strengthens our sense of purpose and teamwork. But sometimes someone has an opinion that has nothing to do with reality and which boggles the mind to such an extend that the only thing stopping fisticuffs from breaking out is that we are, to a one, fragile little homebodies, and were any of us to throw a punch, he or she would likely break his or her own wrist just from the force of pushing it through the air, let alone landing it. Such an argument recently broke out about The Hobbit. Blogger Jesse Fox and editor Josh Wolk both saw it and came away with two entirely different perceptions, each of which made the other doubt the disagreer’s very sanity: Jesse thought the...

Vulture Hosted a Don't Trust the B---- Party Last Night
Krysten Ritter
Last night, Vulture hosted a party for ABC's Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, which premieres its second season tonight at 9:30 Et. The show stars Krysten Ritter as a super-bitch; Dreama Walker as her sweet, tag-along roommate; and James Van Der Beek as their friend, a narcissistic version of James Van Der Beek. And, guess what? The whole cast was there at our party at Toro Lounge at the Smyth hotel, mingling with many celebrants and us bloggers, who dared to step away from the comfort of our computers and show our faces in public. Here is photographic evidence that our fearless — and disturbingly tall — leader, Josh Wolk, actually stood next to Krysten Ritter, with her permission. The other highlight of the night was when a 29-year-old Vulture editor — who shall remain nameless — got her giant, 95-pound Dawson's Creek box set signed by The Beek...

The Greatest TV Drama of the Past 25 Years, Round One: The Shield vs. NYPD Blue
For the next three weeks, Vulture is holding the ultimate Drama Derby to determine the greatest TV drama of the past 25 years. Each day a different notable writer will be charged with determining the winner of a round of the bracket, until New York Magazine TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz judges the finals on March 23. Today's battle: Vulture's Editorial Director Josh Wolk judges The Shield vs. NYPD Blue. You can place your own vote on Facebookor tweet your opinion with the #dramaderby hashtag. When The Shield first premiered in 2002 on FX — a network up until then known for reruns and Nascar (and before that, a morning program co-hosted by a puppet) — the show seemed to be a crass attempt to Xerox HBO's antihero model. Based on its logline, The Shield appeared to have just shifted The Sopranos to the other side of the law: Instead...

John Cleese at an event for Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers (2001)
'Absolutely Anything' will reunite Monty Python gang
John Cleese at an event for Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers (2001)
How do you tell a reunion movie? For starters, if it looks like one — and Absolutely Anything certainly looks like one. EW has confirmed that Anything, a sci-fi farce that will combine CGI and live action, is in development and on track to reassemble the old Monty Python gang. Python alum Terry Jones developed the story — it’s about a group of aliens who use an earthling as their plaything — with Gavin Scott. Jones is also set to direct.

At present, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, and Michael Palin are all signed on to the film. “Eric knows about the project” but isn’t confirmed yet,...

Derick Martini Directing Summer Camp Movie 'Cabin Pressure'
Last November we heard that Lymelife director Derick Martini had setup a comedy, I Am My Family's Secret, to direct at Paramount. In addition, we found out this past June that he was also rewriting/directing an adaptation of Andrea Portes' novel Hick with Chloe Moretz attached. Though we haven't heard anything about the production or eventual release of these films, Variety throws yet another onto his growing resume. Martini has now signed on to direct the summer camp comedy Cabin Pressure, based on Josh Wolk's 2007 book Cabin Pressure: One Man's Desperate Attempt to Recapture His Youth as a Camp Counselor. Here's a more lengthy description of Wolk's chronicle of a return to his past: A few months before his impending wedding, before the full weight of adulthood descended upon him, Entertainment Weekly senior writer Josh Wolk realized he needed to take some time and get reacquainted with his younger self.

Your tweets are in the Library of Congress
Twitter has donated its entire public tweet archive -- which numbers in the billions since 2006 -- to the Library of Congress, the nation's oldest federal cultural institution that "seeks to spark imagination and creativity and to further human understanding and wisdom by providing access to knowledge through its magnificent collections, programs and exhibitions." Of course, the purpose is to catalog historic tweets such as President Obama's upon winning the election. But now, the Library will have our musings on "history" as well. After the jump, I've taken the liberty of pulling out a few of my tweets that might "further human understanding and wisdom.
