Image
"There's something going on between you two." Photon Films has revealed an official trailer for Canadian-British indie film titled Polarized, which just screened this weekend at the Canadian Film Fest in Toronto. Made and set in Canada, the LGBTQ drama is about an aspiring songwriter named Lisa, as played by Holly Deveaux. There's no US release set yet, so keep an eye out for this if you're interested. Lisa's farming family has suffered foreclosure and she is forced to work at a new 'urban farm' where she meets Dalia. Her casual racism leads her to be fired but the women end up drawn into a passionate affair. This also stars Maxine Denis as Dalia, with Tara Samuel, Elie Gemael, Hesham Hammoud, Darren Martens, Abraham Asto, Sandrella Mohanna, & Adam Hurtig. Exclusive: Canadian sales company Apl Film has acquired international sales rights for Canadian-British writer and director Shamim Sarif’s drama Polarized, a love story between two women separated by culture and religion.

The film will screen in the market as part of the selection of Telefilm Canada’s Perspective Canada initiative.

Holly Deveaux co-stars as a white farm worker who is fired for racism and then falls in love with her Palestinian boss, played by Maxine Denis.

“I like to push the boundaries of the way queer women of color are portrayed,” said Sarif. “With Polarized, I believe it’s one of the first times in cinema that we see Palestinian immigrants onscreen who are successful, driving scientific innovation, and in the case of co-lead character Dalia, also queer.”

The filmmaker said she had drawn on her own experiences as well as those of her wife and producer Hanan Kattan,...

[Note: With the film now out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Beast Within from its US digital release last year]

Essentially a horror version of Knives Out (or the many Agatha Christie films which inspired it) and filmed on a low-budget, of course, Beast Within is a whodunit creature feature which stars Steven Morana (Whiskey Business) and Holly Deveaux (The Mist) as a couple attending the launch party of their gaming app Werewolves Awaken. A Successful Digital Run for Werewolf Thriller Beast Within Leads to a DVD Release
Tagline: "This Game Has No Players - Only Prey." Beast Within has already been released in several territories in 2020. Now, the film is set to show on DVD this February, through Stonecutter Media. In the film, a game developer invites several guests to a VIP event. Here, a publicity stunt leads to murder and a growing mystery.  Beast Within was co-directed by Chris Green and Steven Morana. Together, they have brought a familiar cast to the screen, including: Colm Feore (Thor), Ari Millen (The Oak Room), Holly Deveaux ("The Mist"), Art Hindle (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and many more. These filmmakers have brought something unique to the screen, based on the film's rabid reception. Stonecutter Media will have Beast Within show-up at DVD stores this February 23rd. Rated PG-13, the release is not hosting many extras. However, this latest showing is for those DVD collectors, looking for something a bit different.

Syfy Sneaking Up On You With Mutant World November 8th
In a decidedly rare movie these days, Syfy is letting you in on one of its original movies that’s less than two weeks away.

There isn’t much to know at this point, beyond the fact that there’s some potential to the concept, but at least we know who we’ll be watching.

Sci-Fi fans might want a little more info on exactly what “mutant” means, because it might turn out all too similar to “zombie,” but if you’re looking for a slick, popcorn adventure, having people emerge from their bunkers ten years post apocalypse gives you a lot of options. That’s especially true if you throw in a mysterious stranger with tales of a safe haven.

Keep an eye out for this one, though you don’t have a long time to decide.

Brendan Fraser Saves the Children in Action-Thriller Split-decision
Brendan Fraser has been struggling on the big screen in the last few years after The Mummy dried up and Dwayne Johnson muscled him out of the Journey franchise.  That being said, Fraser has a slew of projects lined up for the next few years; count the action-thriller Split-Decision among them.  Starring as a father who must protect his children from killer brothers after witnessing a murder, Split-Decision doesn't sound like the typical light-hearted fantasy fare we're used to seeing in Fraser's family films.  Hit the jump to see who'll be filling in the roles of Split-Decision. CBS sues over ABC's 'Glass House' again, 'New Girl' bringing back True American
Here are some tasty TV snacks to go with your summer Friday afternoon:

CBS is still quite unhappy with ABC's upcoming "Big Brother"-esque reality competition "Glass House" -- so much so that the network has filed a temporary restraining order to prevent ABC from airing the "Glass House" series premiere on June 18. This is in addition to the lawsuit that's currently in discovery in the U.S. District Court alleging copyright infringement, trade secret misappropriation and other charges. "Glass House" features contestants living together in a camera-filled house and competing in challenges to win $250,000. [Entertainment Weekly]

While we might not have all the rules for "New Girl's" epic drinking game True American, we will be seeing it again on the Fox hit. Creator Liz Merriwether says that it will definitely return. "We're definitely bringing [the game] back. We want to tie it into the election," she says. [Vulture]

But the film's writer, Alison Cross, told the...

Little known Canadian actress Holly Deveaux to play Casey Anthony in Lifetime movie (IrishCentral)
A little known Canadian actress, Holly Deveaux, is set to star as Casey Anthony in a movie which will portray the murder trial and shocking acquittal of the hated mother who was accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee. The movie, “Prosecuting Casey Anthony,” is based on the book, “Imperfect Justice,” written by the case’s prosecuting lawyer, Jeff Ashley. “West Wing” star Rob Lowe will play the role of Jeff Ashley in the movie, while “The Office” actor, Oscar Nunez will have the difficult job of portraying Anthony’s defence lawyer, Jose Baez. Holly (19) beat Kristen Stewart, Alyssa Milano, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, to the role. The young actress, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Anthony, has previously starred in the Canadian series, “Baxter.” Holly’s role will be relatively limited in the movie, as producers plan to heavily rely on news footage. Elizabeth Mitchell joins Lifetime's Casey Anthony movie, Holly Deveaux to play Anthony
Holly Deveaux
Lifetime's movie about the Casey Anthony trial has added a couple of familiar names to its cast -- along with one lesser-known actress playing Anthony herself.

Canadian actress Holly Deveaux will play Anthony in "Prosecuting Casey Anthony," the Orlando Sentinel reports. The movie is based on Anthony prosecutor Jeff Ashton's book "Imperfect Justice" and will star Rob Lowe as Ashton.

Elizabeth Mitchell ("Lost," "V") and Oscar Nunez ("The Office") have also signed on to the project, which begins filming next week and will air later in the year. Mitchell will play Linda Burdick, Ashton's fellow prosecutor, and Nunez will play defense attorney Jose Baez, who helped win his client's acquittal on the charge of murdering her daughter Caylee. (Casey Anthony was convicted of four counts of giving false statements to police.)

Deveaux starred in the Canadian comedy "Baxter" and has guest-starred on episodes of "Lost Girl," "Haven" and "Breakout Kings.

Victoria Day
If you're an aficionado of literature, you're probably aware that this is the feature debut of David Bezmozgis, an acclaimed author. I haven't read his book Natasha and Other Stories. Nonetheless, Bezmozgis is definitely a director to watch for the years to come because of his writing skills. However, the cast's performance in Victoria Day is often soft at times.

1988: It's Victoria Day, school is almost over and the Edmonton Oilers (which had Wayne Gretzky at that time) were fighting in the NHL playoffs against the Boston Bruins. Ben Spector (Mark Rendall), a teenager from a Russian immigrant family living in Toronto, decides to attend to a concert of Bob Dylan with his two best friends. Once there, he runs into Jordan Chapman (Mitchell Amaral), the class jerk and Ben's annoying teammate in his amateur hockey team, who is five dollars shy of buying some drugs. Ben gives Jordan five dollars without enthusiasm.
