Dampyr trailer: vampire comic book adaptation gets a digital release
Image
Based on a comic book from the Italian independent publisher Sergio Bonelli, the live-action English-language action thriller Dampyr has now received a digital release courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and you can check it out on Amazon at This Link. To help you decide whether or not Dampyr is a movie you’d like to check out, we have the trailer embedded above.

The Dampyr comic book was created by Mauro Boselli and Maurizio Colombo, and the duo also crafted the story for the film adaptation. Boselli then wrote the screenplay with Giovanni Masi, Alberto Ostini, and Mauro Uzzeo. Directed by first-time filmmaker Riccardo Chemello, the film has the following synopsis: Based on the popular comic book series, Dampyr follows Harlan Draka, a con artist. Haunted by nightmares, Harlan Draka wanders through the war-torn Balkan countryside, making money out of ridding superstitious villagers of imaginary monsters. But after being...

The Devil Inside Was A Critical And Commercial Disaster – And It Deserves Further Study On Netflix
Image
Movies about possession and exorcism must scratch a very particular itch for American viewers. Going back to the mother of that horror subgenre, "The Exorcist," you can see one of the biggest box office hits of 1973, and in the fifty years since, many movies have played with that premise. A filmmaker can do it relatively cheaply, often just needing to rely on fearless performers willing to contort themselves and speak in tongues. And seeing an ordered world enter total disarray is what horror is all about.

William Brent Bell's 2012 film "The Devil Inside" took that to heart, dealing with the threat of possession through a mockumentary, found-footage lens. In the movie's universe, it's a documentary about Isabella (Fernanda Andrade) as she investigates her mother, particularly the grisly murders she committed when Isabella was a child. The mockumentary takes the form not just of a horror movie, but of an expose,...

Ghost Bastards - Putain de fantôme (2013)
The spoof movie A Haunted House is opening in the same release slot as this year's box office smash The Devil Inside. A Haunted House comes to theaters January 11th, 2013 and stars Marlon Wayans, Nick Swardson, David Koechner, Alanna Ubach, Dave Sheridan, Essence Atkins, Cedric the Entertainer, Jamie Noel. The film is directed by Michael Tiddes.

Synopsis:

In 1989, emergency responders received a 911 call from Maria Rossi confessing to three brutal murders. The courts found her insane – but something else found her first.

Twenty years later, her daughter Isabella (Fernanda Andrade), followed by film-maker Michael (Ionut Grama) who wishes to document her journey, has found that her search for answers had led her to two rogue priests who reveal that her mother is in truth possessed not by one powerful demon but four! Now, it’s up to Isabella to face pure evil and work to overcome its claim on her mother’s soul once and for all.

UK Audience Reaction to Special Church Based Screening of The Devil Inside
Following on from the surprising decision to screen William Brent Bell's new docu-exorcism horror flick 'The Devil Inside' in various churches around the world the UK decided to get in on the action and took the almost sacrilegous decision to preview the movie the night before its general release last Friday at the Round Chapel in Hackney, London. Bell co-penned the script for 'The Devil Inside' along with Matthew Peterman. Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan and Brian Johnson all star in the movie. It's currently running in theatres here across the UK and you can check out a special audience reaction footage clip from the Hackey-based event below. ...

Review: The Devil Inside
The Devil Inside

Stars: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley | Written by William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman | Directed by William Brent Bell

We’re doing something a little different for this review folks… If you’ve read any of my reviews of documentary-style or found-footage horror flicks you’ll know I have a particular disdain for the sub-genre. Couple that fact with the terrible reviews that came out the Us when the film opened over there and I knew I’d give The Devil Inside a bad review. So I thought in the interests of balance and fairness, why not see what joe public thinks of the film? After all, despite what critics say about these types of movies they still attract an audience. Hence we tracked down a found footage film fan who has a fondness for the Paranormal Activity movies (again another franchise I...

The Devil Inside Versus the Cameraman: A Movie Review
Director: William Brent Bell.

Writers: William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman.

Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman and Evan Helmuth.

Despite what the advertising claims, The Devil Inside looks more at the various causes of malevolent behavior than the attempts to treat the symptoms. When science says possession is a product of the mind, maybe all there is to cause a person to be possessed is a switch than a demonic spirit.

Although most of the cinematography is buried by the use of the shaky-cam format, there are small parts of this movie to like. With the film offering very close-up shots of the eye as part of the visual tale, the video editor is imbuing this film with symbolism. If the eye is truly the window to the soul, as some holy texts lead readers to believe, this film certainly has plenty of those framed shots. By examining how the eye reacts,...

The Devil Inside (2012)
Directed by: William Brent Bell

Written by: William Brent Bell, Matthew Peterman

Cast: Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan

For decades, The Lost Boys earned the top spot on my "movies that cheated the audiences at the end" list. By rewriting vampire lore in the last 8 minutes, the entire movie was ruined for me, no small feat given my proclivity to suspend disbelief (and yes, I revisited that film and the review is coming soon).

But the reigning champion was dethroned this weekend, as The Devil Inside delivered a brutal kick to the gut to moviegoers. It's unfortunate, as the film is pretty good, keeping the audience either deathly silent or screaming at all the right moments. But as the credits rolled, most of the audience at the screening I attended went from shrieking to jeering and booing at the screen.

The film opens...

Director William Brent Bell and screenwriter Matthew Peterman discuss The Devil Inside, the controversial ending, and the viral website for this indie horror tale

After the overwhelming success of the micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity franchise, Paramount Pictures set up an indie division called Paramount Insurge, which focuses on making low-budget films with budgets under $1 million. Their first title under this endeavor is The Devil Inside, which shattered box office expectations this weekend, opening with a massive $34.5 million from just a $1 million budget. I recently had the chance to speak with The Devil Inside director William Brent Bell and screenwriter Matthew Peterman over the phone to speak about their successful horror indie, its controversial ending, and much more. Here's what they had to say below.

That was quite an event on Thursday night. What did you guys think of it?

The Devil Inside review
It's the latest micro-budget film to storm the Us box office - but is The Devil Insider worth the bother? Here's Ron's review...

When Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade) was a small child, there was... an incident. Her mother Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley) killed three members of the clergy while the two priests and a nun were performing an exorcism on her without the Vatican's permission. Isabella grows up, and her mother gets shipped off to a mental hospital in Rome, right in the shadow of the Vatican.

Fortunately for Isabella, being so close to the Vatican gives her a unique opportunity to meet a pair of priests, Ben (Simon Quarterman) and David (Evan Helmuth), who practiced unlicensed exorcisms using a unique mix of medical science and religious rituals to determine who is simply mentally ill and who has an actual Satan infestation. Of course, this unique combination of situations makes...

“The Devil Inside” Driving Audiences Out Of Theaters
William Brent Bell in Devil Inside (2012)
While The Devil Inside is attracting droves to theaters (debuting last Friday to the tune of $16.85mil, on track to $34mil for the weekend), reports are coming in of audiences reacting strongly to the film in an unusually negative way. BleedingCool is just one of many sources reporting crowd backlash ranging from booing, to throwing things at the screen, to folks storming out in disgust and demanding refunds. Why such an uproar?

Reviews have made note of near-unwatchable shaky camera cinematography, laughable dialogue, frustrating editing, and a character (“Michael,” played by Ionut Grama) so distracting in his annoyance that people are mocking him out loud. Above all else, though, there is the ending…

Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert

(stop here if you care about preserving any element of surprise)

We won’t give the abrupt ending away, but will say it has infuriated a great number of people.

The Devil Inside Surprises with $16.8 Million Friday Opening
William Brent Bell in Devil Inside (2012)
2011 saw a box office slump like nothing before it. But as 2012 kicks off, Hollywood is hopeful that fans will come back to the theater with such big titles as The Dark Knight Rises, Marvel's the Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and The Amazing Spider-Man all waiting in the wings.

The first real big release weekend of the year has kicked off things in fashion, with the low budge horror film The Devil Inside earning an unprecedented, and unexpected, $16.8 million on Friday, its day of release ($2 million of which came from midnight screenings).

Paranormal Activity 3 was the last horror film to open this big, which was way back in October. Paramount released both films, and it looks like they have another potential franchise on their hands.

The Devil Inside was acquired by the studio for $1 million dollars, with a little more than $15 million being spent on promoting this faux...

[Review] The Devil Inside
If only this was a sit-com, what an uproarious work The Devil Inside would be. From this critical angle, (perhaps after proper lubrication, Alamo Drafthouse why aren’t you near me?) you could settle in for solid camp. Sober, the comparisons to Rick Santorum’s stance on abortion are uncanny – oops – spoiler alert.

Of course I can spoil this film all I want to. It is, as the Blues Travelers say, the hook that brings you back. The hook here is similar to many a film in this genre; people freaking out, bleeding and a lot of “the power of Christ compels you!” Holy water is spilled and things go boom in the night (thanks to Dolby surround sound).

Directed on a modest budget by William Brent Bell, who previously made the decent PG-13 horror flick Stay Alive, there are some sick pleasures to be found in The Devil Inside,...

The Devil Inside Premiere In-Theatre Scare a Return to Showmanship of Days Gone By
If I have any complaints about movie-going in general, it's the nearly all of the spectacle is gone. In the days of the great William Castle (who pretty much created viral marketing), there would be all manner of gimmicks associated with his films from seat buzzers to insurance policies to flying skeletons sailing over the crowd. What a fun time to have been a fan! As a tip of the hat to those golden days of cinema, Paramount had a little surprise in store for those who attended the Los Angeles premiere of The Devil Inside.

Bonnie Morgan, Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Preston James Hillier, Evan Helmuth, Suzan Crowley, D.T. Carney, and Ionut Grama star. Look for the film in theatres now, and click here for our review of The Devil Inside.

Exclusive: Heath Ledger Was Possessed During The Dark Knight Says Real Exorcist of The Devil Inside
Heath Ledger at an event for Candy (2006)
The idea that Heath Ledger was possessed by a demon during the production of The Dark Knight is not new. Some folks truly believe that the young actor opened himself up, and became susceptible to, a truly evil force. One that drove Heath's performance as The Joker.

One of those people that believe Heath Ledger may have been under the influence of Satan's minions in his portrayal of this iconic Batman villain is The Reverend Bob Larson, the world's leading exorcist, and foremost expert on cults, the occult, and supernatural phenomena. He is currently making the rounds in discussing the authentic nature of the exorcisms seen in The Devil Inside.

We recently caught up with Bob to chat about this new thriller. Along the way, we began discussing the dangers of demon possession in acting. And how certain roles or performances may make a person more accessible to demons. Heath Ledger...

Exclusive: Exorcist Reverend Bob Larson Talks The Devil Inside
The world's foremost expert on supernatural phenomena insures audiences that this is the most authentic Exorcism film ever made
