Despite only releasing less than a year ago, Nick Frost's folk horror/comedy Get Away has already fallen under many people's radars. Also starring the effortlessly funny Aisling Bea, Heartstopper’s Sebastian Croft, and young actress Maisie Ayres, Get Away opened to positive reviews and earned a strong, "certified fresh" 76% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Now, 10 months on from its festival debut at Fantastic Fest, Get Away is finally a streaming hit in America.
Officially, as of July 21, 2025, Get Away is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Hulu in the US. Directed by Steffen Haars, the movie joins many other bigger-budget titles currently topping the Hulu charts as it punches above its weight on streaming. This includes the likes of Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s explosive The Equalizer 3, John Travolta and Gina Gershon's sleeper hit High Rollers, and the brand-new sci-fi flick The Assessment...

Sam Claflin has worked on several benchmark projects, including the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. However, there is one film that made Claflin a household name, and that was his 2016 tentpole, Me Before You.
Based on Jojo Moyes’s book, the film became a sensation when it was released in 2016. Perched on the crackling chemistry between the 38-year-old and Emilia Clarke, Me Before You became a box office success despite receiving mixed critical reviews.
Me Before You became quite popular among the young fans, which later inspired Netflix to acquire the Ott distribution rights of the film. However, not many years later, the streaming giant let go of the film, but let Clafin’s lower-rated film Love Wedding Repeat still stay on the platform.

Aisling Bea says a third season of her BAFTA-winning comedy-drama is unlikely to come to fruition after having a “tough time” writing the second season of the series, in which she also stars alongside Sharon Horgan.
“I made the second series during the pandemic after a very tough time and it was really tough to make,” she told an audience at Dublin’s screenwriting festival Storyhouse. “For me, that show is all about feeling light and, I’m not sure if anyone here actually enjoyed the pandemic, but that sort of shadowed over a lot of it. So, we’ll see what happens down the line but for me, it just felt like personally I lost some of the fire for the show, which is in the title. I’m still incredibly proud of the show but I know the intent with which I made it was to feel more uplifting.

Have you ever wondered what Midsommar would look like as a horror-comedy? Well, look no further than Get Away. Directed by Steffen Haars, Get Away takes all the tropes of folk horror and throws them right back at the audience. It is bizarre in tone but held together by the comedic performances of its leads, Nick Frost (who also wrote the movie) and Aisling Bea, who is a household name in the UK comedy scene. It captures that eerie unease of the closed commune environment from an outsider's perspective. Yet, the protagonists are so abruptly blissful and jovial that the movie is tonally different to the rest of the folk horror subgenre. Get Away is gloriously self-indulgent and encourages the audience to move away from the usual seriousness of the subgenre and just relax, and that’s what makes it such a wild ride.

We are introduced to the very British family, The Smiths: father Richard (Nick Frost), mother Susan (Aisling Bea), sister Jessie (Maisie Ayres), and brother Sam (Sebastian Croft). The four members seem to be the quintessential British family of the modern age, with the teenagers especially coming off as bratty or disinterested in comparison to their parents.

“Nick Frost in a horror-comedy” is the sort of sentence that inevitably invites comparisons to Shaun Of The Dead. Get Away is a markedly different beast to Frost’s iconic 2004 film debut: this is a horror-comedy set in Northern Sweden rather than North London, and there’s less of an affectionate genre homage going on here: while Get Away’s creepy Scandinavians and their strange rituals occasionally evoke Midsommar, there’s more of a droll holiday-gone-wrong vibe — Eden Lake meets National Lampoon’s Vacation, if you will.
That is cemented from minute one, with Cliff Richard’s ‘Summer Holiday’ blaring through the speakers of a hire car. This is where we meet Frost — on both acting and screenwriting duties — in pure dad mode as the affable Richard, cheerfully blurting out lines like, “All aboard the Skylark!” Aisling Bea, as his wife Susan, ably matches his energy, brightly calling him “Daddy...

An almighty twist and a demented finale rescue the Shaun of the Dead actor’s cartoonish homage to folk horrors – but co-star Aisling Bea deserves better
The trouble with Nick Frost’s knowingly cartoonish and silly comedy paying homage to folk horrors such as The Wicker Man and Midsommar is that Frost has done this kind of movie before, and better. His hugely enjoyable collaborations with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End, had a perfect command of comedy horror. The tone here feels less good natured, more self-congratulatory, the comedy not quite so light on its feet. Though it comes into its own with a cheerfully gruesome gorefest in the last half-hour.
Frost writes and stars alongside Aisling Bea (who really does deserve a better horror film). They play Richard and Susan Smith, an ordinary-seeming middle-aged couple with the irritating habit of calling...

The AppleTV+ series Bad Sisters is wrapping up its second season and there hasn’t been any word about a renewal for Season 3. Fans looking for another black comedy starring Sharon Horgan as a protective older sister should check out This Way Up on Hulu. Just like on Bad Sisters, Horgan plays a complex, flawed character who sees her younger sister through a very difficult time. While Bad Sisters' Eva Garvey tries to save her sister from an abusive marriage, Horgan's character on This Way Up, Shona, is helping her sister Áine (series creator Aisling Bea) after a mental breakdown. Unlike Bad Sisters, Horgan didn’t develop or write on This Way Up. But, Bea's comedy style as both a showrunner and a co-lead is perfectly suited to Horgan's sensibilities. This Way Up has the same laugh-until-you-cry dark humor as Bad Sisters.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Get Away!
The latest hilarious horror happening from the mad mind of Nick Frost landed in theaters earlier this month in the form of Get Away. The Steffen Haars-directed picture follows the Smith family, led by their patriarch Richard (Frost), as they embark on a vacation. The vacation in question revolves around venturing to a strange island to partake in the native population's annual celebration.
Tension boils over in the third act, as the standoffish natives go to battle with the Smiths. While the likes of Richard, Susan (Aisling Bea), Jessie (Maisie Ayres), and Sam (Sebastian Croft) seem to be on the defensive to begin with, it quickly becomes apparent that the Smith family is relishing in bringing this bloodbath upon the island.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Get Away!Stephen Haars and Nick Frost's Get Away landed in theaters earlier this month, and in typical Frost fashion, the comedic thriller features a shocking twist in the third act. The Smith family's vacation had always been coated in layers of eeriness, and that tension reached a crescendo when Richard (Frost), Susan (Aisling Bea), Jessie (Maisie Ayres), and Sam (Sebastian Croft) instigate a slaughtering of the island's native population.
While the entire film had been building up to a battle between the Smiths and the natives, Get Away reveals that it's actually the outsiders that are on the offensive. Sunday update: Walt Disney Studios’ “Moana 2” continued to dominate the box office in its second weekend, taking in a projected $52 million domestically as its worldwide total reached $600 million. It shattered “Frozen II’s” post-Thanksgiving weekend record, which grossed $35.1 million in the first weekend of December, 2019. Universal’s “Wicked” is second with $36.4 million, followed by “Gladiator II” with $12.6 million, “Pushpa 2 — The Rule” with $9.3 million, and “Red One” with $7 million. Among new openers, “Solo Leveling: ReAwakening” made a splash with $2.4 million and A24’s “Y2K” disappointed with just $2.1 million.
Friday update: As expected, there won’t be much movement in the post-Thanksgiving box office rankings. “Moana 2” is projected to hold the top spot again, taking in around $60 million, which would be the highest numbers ever for the first week of December. The current record-holder is 2019’s “Frozen II,” which grossed $35.1 million. “Wicked” is poised to come in second place with around $32 million,...

Despite a growing sense of fatigue from too many serious and darkly comic gore-fests, I signed up to cover Get Away for two reasons – Nick Frost and Aisling Bea. Glad I did. Frost became a celeb primarily from serving as Simon Pegg’s lovable sidekick in Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz (one of my all-time faves). Both were written by Pegg and Edgar Wright, leading to several other worthy collaborations from the three pals.
This time Frost as writer and star proves he can stick the landing in that genre just fine on his own. Delightful Irish stand-up/actress Bea plays his wife, as they and their two (typically surly) teenagers travel from England to Sweden for the eponymous vacation. They decided on a remote island, timing the visit with an arcane festival and program that’s an homage to its history.

Plenty of movie franchises overstay their welcome, and two movies is often enough to see whether a franchise has a viable future. The first sequel often dictates whether a franchise can be more than just one great movie. For example, John Wick was designed as a standalone movie, but its first sequel set up an intriguing story that necessitated an entire franchise. For every John Wick, there are many more franchises which deliver underwhelming sequels.
Not all movies should set up long-running franchises, and not all franchises should be designed to continue indefinitely. There are plenty of franchises with just two or three movies that are the perfect length. Unfortunately, studios don't always know when to quit. There's an art to knowing the right time to call it quits, and a lot of movie franchises would be held in higher regard if they had stopped at just two movies.

Holidays with older children are rarely peaceful affairs. Jessie (Maisie Ayres) and Sam (Sebastian Croft) are both in their late teens now, bickering in the back of the car, and although nobody talks about it, there’s a pervasive awareness that this could be the last time the family takes a trip like this together. Susan (Aisling Bea) is determined that everything will go right. She’s not about to let this special occasion be spoiled by the strange warnings of the Swedish mainlanders. Neither is she put off by the residents of the island they’re visiting, who are quite rude about the fact that this is a special, sacred time to them. After all, their quaint rituals are part of what she’s there to see. Richard takes a picture of her smiling in front of a monument to those who starved during Karantän (a period of...

A bloody, brilliant blast that's easily one of my favorite films of the year, Get Away pays homage to folk horror while cleverly subverting the genre at the same time, all while delivering the gory goods every step of the way. Written by Nick Frost (who also stars in the film) and directed by Steffen Haars, Get Away follows a delightfully dysfunctional family on a vacation to an isolated Swedish island where the locals are preparing for an ancient festival and have their unsettling sights set on the island's new tourists as the unwanted guests of honor.
With Get Away now in theaters via IFC Films and Shudder, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with writer/star Nick Frost and star Aisling Bea about their killer new horror comedy, including exploring family dynamics, filming in Finland, and keeping viewers on their toes while having a bloody good time.

It’s called a “horror comedy,” but “Get Away,” Nick Frost’s latest movie, is much more than that. Frost is a comedy legend in British film. Frost and the lively Aisling Bea play lead roles in a narrative that follows the Smith family as they travel to the remote Swedish island of Svälta for a vacation that seems harmless.
Their vacation quickly turns into a nightmare exploration of cultural insensitivity and familial dysfunction due to the island’s dark history, which is steeped in cannibalism and colonial guilt.
The absurdity of privileged tourists intruding on a community still traumatized by past crimes is exposed by this film as it expertly navigates the waters of cultural clash. With their messy sincerity, the Smiths represent a British sense of entitlement that reflects larger societal problems.

In the horror comedy Get Away, an Anglo-Irish family go on vacation to Svälta, a place that sounds ideal for horror: a small Swedish island where in the 19th century a supposed pandemic caused a prolonged quarantine, death, famine, and cannibalism. Despite the classic warnings, the family takes a ferry to Svälta with the idea of attending the upcoming Karantän, a festivity connected to what happened 200 years ago. Once in Svälta, the protagonists meet a terribly hostile commune (led by Anitta Suikkari's character) and their Airbnb host (Eero Milonoff), who soon enough emanates a creepy vibe. The Nick Frost-penned, Steffen Haars-directed Get Away offers a constant dose of humor, plays with horror tropes, and evokes...

It’s one of the most timeless setups in the horror pantheon: a group of unsuspecting travelers visit a remote and insular community, only to find themselves sucked into a ritual that places their lives in danger. From “The Wicker Man” to “Midsommar,” the folk horror subgenre has thrived by exploiting our fear of interrupting a tradition that we were never meant to be a part of. The juxtaposition of ignorant tourism and seemingly backwards folk religions produces the kind of gruesome friction that horror filmmakers love to exploit. Now, Nick Frost is ready to find out if audiences are willing to laugh about it too.

Nick Frost's darkly hilarious mind is at work once again with Get Away. This Steffan Haars-directed horror-comedy is the latest chapter for Frost in the genre, as fans of Shaun of the Dead will recognize that the actor's signature charm is palpable throughout the 90-minute runtime.

Folk horror is a robust subgenre that first entered the mainstream in the '70s, with the movies Blood on Satan's Claw, The Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General paving the way for the niche's current relevance. Folk horror explores the uncomfortable underbelly of rural settings through an emphasis on belief, superstition, sacrifice, and legacy. More importantly, the subgenre has experienced a recent renaissance with popular genre movies like Midsommar, Sightseers, Men, and The Witch.
Modern horror has helped this subgenre evolve, and director Steffen Haars and screenwriter/star Nick Frost crafted a potent answer to this movement with Get Away. Their movie presents a familiar story, where an unsuspecting family vacations to a foreign country that harbors a dark secret and tradition in the woods. However, Get Away works hard to reinvent the genre and surprise...

A familiar premise initially unfolds in Get Away, a collaborative effort realized by Dutch director Steffen Haars alongside writer, producer, and star Nick Frost. Nick Frost returns to horror comedy with Get Away, and while the film does not match Shaun of the Dead's hectic and hilarious energy, it has its moments. Frost found incredible success working alongside his frequent collaborator and friend, Simon Pegg. Together, the pair starred in the Cornetto Trilogy, an iconic set of comedy films that bend the rules of the genre. Now that he's breaking out on his own for a while, Frost continues to deliver solid comedy in a quirky folk horror setting with Get Away, a film he also wrote.

A family holiday takes an unexpected direction in Get Away, the latest comedy from the keyboard of Nick Frost – and by far his goriest to date. A hit at Fantastic Fest and Sitges, it’s now going on general release, and I spoke with some of its creators and stars about how the bloody pieces were put together. First up is a conversation with supporting cast members Maisie Ayers and Sebastian Croft, who play teenagers Jessie and Sam, as well as director Steffen Haars.
I had first encountered Steffen’s work a few years ago, in the form of the inimitable Ron Goossens, Low-Budget Stuntman, and when we talked we agreed that although Get Away is rather less sweet-natured, the two have a similar vibe.

There’s nothing like getting a little R&r, whether we’re talking Rest & Relaxation or…R-Rated Bloodbaths & Really Creepy Cannibalistic Townsfolk. And you’ll find both in Steffan Haars’ dark comedy Get Away, starring the ever-charming Nick Frost (Shaun of The Dead) and Aisling Bea (Last One Laughing: Ireland). Harbingers of Doom, over-the-top goofy small-town nonsense, and true Swedish Seaside Massacre of a finale.
Like Get Out for fans of Nordic crime TV, Get Away follows the Smith family as they take a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to take in some culture on the remote Swedish island of Svalta. Despite warnings from literally everyone they encounter, The Smith’s press on, eager to participate in Svalta’s annual celebration of their violent liberation from Britain. Needless to say, not the best time for some out of touch UK visitors to show up unannounced...
