Exclusive: Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, writers of the stage musical adaptation of Disney’s Bedknobs And Broomsticks that launched a UK and Ireland tour last weekend, have signed with Verve for representation.
Produced by Michael Harrison, Bedknobs and Broomsticks is adapted from Disney’s 1971 live action-animation hybrid. Bertram wrote new music for the stage production (which also includes songs from the original film) and Hill wrote the book.
The stage musical made its world premiere at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle on Aug. 14, with additional tour dates currently scheduled through next spring.
The production stars Dianne Pilkington as Miss Price, the witch-in-training played in the film by Angela Lansbury, and Charles Brunton as Emelius Browne (David Tomlinson in the movie).
Other Bertram-Hill credits include The Story of My Life, which ran on Broadway in 2009, and Goodspeed Musicals’ The Theory of Relativity and Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.

According to Deadline, the film will be Lee’s next project after Da 5 Bloods and American Utopia, and is based on a 2018 Esquire article headlined All Rise, which chronicled the discovery and marketing of the drug (called sildenafil citrate). Lee is co-writing the script with British playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah, current artistic director of the Young Vic, and the music is by songwriters Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald.

The headline sort of says it all, and frankly there’s maybe not much else necessary to convince, but for the sake of details: Deadline reports Spike Lee will direct a currently untitled musical based on David Kushner’s Esquire article All Rise: The Untold Story of The Guys Who Launched Viagra, as scripted by himself and playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah; songs are by Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, whose musical Passing Strange was given film treatment by Lee in 2009. Entertainment One are behind the project in conjunction with 40 Acres and a Mule.
A cursory glance through Kushner’s article will foretell certain of Lee’s interests—corporate America, public image, family strife, integrations (or resistance to) with social mores—which is to say nothing of his musical fortes. And of course it’s just funny to imagine a Spike Lee musical about Viagra. We are not above that base amusement.
