Fiction and Documentary Collide in ‘Fake Blood’ [Maple Syrup Massacre]
Image
Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…

Fake Blood is a delicious curiousity: it’s a documentary about director Rob Grant and his frequent collaborator Mike Kovac, who also co-writes, exploring their responsibility in depicting cinematic violence.

Or at least that’s how it starts.

Over time the film slowly morphs into something different. As the two men embark on a mission to “experience” the kinds of violence depicted in their low budget films, they slowly become immersed in a narrative of their own making involving a “real-life” murderer named “John.”

Grant is well known in indie horror circles. In addition to directing under-the-radar gem Harpoon, he’s the editor of films like Knuckleball and this year’s Influencer.

In the film, Rob and Mike play themselves: a Vancouver filmmaker and actor,...

Golden Globes 2023: Here’s What You Didn’t See On TV
Image
The 2023 Golden Globes was a night of memorable wins, stunning fashion, and, well, Brad Pitt. And while the televised broadcast featured plenty of special moments, there was a lot the cameras didn’t capture at The Beverly Hilton on Tuesday evening.

From hugs to reunions to a Rihanna photo shoot, there were plenty of unseen moments from A-listers and newcomers alike.

Et was live on the red carpet and inside the annual awards show, and got some insider details and eyewitness accounts of what when down when the cameras weren’t rolling.

Everyone loves a good manicure, and Anya Taylor-Joy and Julia Garner were spotted greeting each other and showing off their nails as they arrived at the show. An eyewitness says the women “seem thrilled to see each other” as they introduced their significant others.

Sticking to his sobriety, Brad Pitt was seen throughout the night enjoying a refreshing water amid the festivities.

John Stamos Tells Dax Shepard He Declined a Date With Kristen Bell Because He's "Too Old"
Image
Image Source: Getty / Michael Kovac

John Stamos may be to thank for one of the most treasured celebrity couples. The actor and "Full House" star recently appeared on a Nov. 14 episode of Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, during which he revealed that he was once nearly set up with Kristen Bell, who is now of course married to Shepard. Upon meeting Bell, however, Stamos felt their nearly 17-year age difference was too great. "I just was so lofty and thought, 'I'm old,'" he said.

Stamos told Shepard he first met Bell at an industry party "freshly divorced" from his first wife, Rebecca Romijn. "My press agent, Lewis K, says, 'There's this girl that wants to meet you. You gotta meet her. She's in the theater, she's fun, you guys will be great together.' It was Kristen." Stamos added, "I said, 'She's so adorable, she's so great. I'm...

Image

Frankie Jonas and his girlfriend had a personal connection to their Halloween costume this year. Jonas and his girlfriend, Anna Olson, dressed as Joe Jonas and ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift from their 2008 duet featured in the movie "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience," released in 2009.

Frankie wore black pants and a leather vest on top of a graphic T-shirt with "Burnin' Up" written across the front, referencing the Jonas Brothers' 2008 hit. Meanwhile, Olson faced him in a shimmery silver dress, similar to the one Swift wore while she performed "Should've Said No" with Joe while they were dating. In the Instagram post shared by the youngest Jonas, you can see how closely the couple's outfits resemble the still of Joe and Swift on stage.

The "Claim to Fame" host and his girlfriend doubled down in his commitment to poking fun at Joe. With rings on their ring fingers,...

Roman Kopelevich’s La-based Red Sea Media arrives in Berlin this week with sales rights to the action thriller 22 Chaser.

Dan Bekerman and Don Carmody are producing the story of an honest tow truck driver who risks everything in a desperate quest to become king of the road and provide for his family.

Fake Blood (2017)
'Fake Blood': Film Review
Fake Blood (2017)
Two Canadians with a sideline in schlock-horror movies ponder the ethics of peddling cinematic violence in Fake Blood, a low-fi film claiming to be a documentary account of that self-reflection. If what they show us all actually happened, Fake Blood would be something of a minor doc discovery, in which truth takes a surprising and on-topic turn. But if director Rob Grant and collaborator Mike Kovac actually had this adventure, they'd surely be crowing about it, not having their publicists refuse to confirm or deny the truth of the pic's third-act events. Judged as a fiction built on a kernel...

Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
Why Doesn't Lily Collins Have a British Accent? We're Genuinely Asking
Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
Image Source: Getty / Michael Kovac Something that has been bothering us for a while now (besides, you know, climate-change deniers, bars that don't serve Rosé, and when something in the sale section isn't actually on sale) is the fact that Lily Collins, ubertalented actress and owner of some of the best brows in the business, doesn't have a British accent. That sounds like a nonsensical thing to be bothered by, because it is, but bear with us: even though her father is British and she did have an accent in the 2014 film Love, Rosie, Lily does not, in fact, have a British accent Irl. And we just feel like she should. Image Source: Getty / Todd Williamson Lily's father is, of course, the great English singer and former Genesis frontman Phil Collins. Her mother is Jill Tavelman, Phil's second wife and the former president of the Beverly Hills Women's Club. The 27-year-old was born in Surrey,...

By: Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

“It’s sort of what I’m supposed to do,” says the legendary songwriter/composer Burt Bacharach — a man who has written the music for 48 Top 10 hits, including nine that reached the top of the charts, and who has won eight Grammys, three Oscars and the Library of Congress’ 2011 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song — as we sit down in his Pacific Palisades piano room to record an episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast, and I ask him what keeps him working at the age of 88. “Sometimes I have to force it,” he admits. “But it’s what I’ve done. Even if I don’t write anything any good, just let me keep my fingers wet.”

Bacharach certainly has kept his fingers wet, of late: in 2016, for John Asher’s Po, an indie drama about...
