Pedro Caxade is a director, writer and actor committed to changing racial narratives on screen and developing stories focused on decolonization. For the past four years, Pedro has been embarked on an artistic and spiritual journey through Mexico to immerse himself in the rich cultural heritage of the Ancient Tradition and study the Nahuatl language and culture. He is currently in pre-production on his directorial debut with one of his original screenplays.
He was born and raised in Galicia, northern Spain, into a family of traditional farmers. His Celtic and Jewish ancestors were persecuted for their language, culture and beliefs, and this heritage made him grow up with a special awareness of how culture and art can help improve the world. His ancestors lived as serfs for hundreds of years in the small village of La Portela, until they gained their land in the mid-19th century. His mother was a biologist and his father an engineer.
Pedro began his stage career as a child. At the age of thirteen he wrote his first play and presented it at his local school to great acclaim in his community. Since then, he has never left the stage. The following year he joined the Youth Classics of La Coruña, where he made his debut in a production of Cervantes' "Entremeses", a Spanish comedy from the Golden Age. He participated in many more productions during his adolescence until, at the age of seventeen, he moved to Madrid to study writing and acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
After three years he found the Royal Academy too cold and impersonal and left it to form his own company, "Buffa Theatre", with which he successfully toured Italy and Spain with some of the most beloved European classics. He directed and starred in "Richard III", "Don Quixote" and "A Doll's House", among others. In 2010 his adaptation of the Italian classic "Maid in Italy", earned him a great box office success in the European theater scene.
While touring England, his skills caught the attention of director Simon Blake, who cast him in the role of Luca in his award-winning "Still", alongside Aidan Guillen and Elodie Yung. His career took him to London, where he has starred in major TV series such as Peaky Blinders and Stella, and where he played some of the most emblematic musical roles, such as Dante in "The Divine Comedy" or the unforgettable Argentinian in the acclaimed and millionaire production of "Moulin Rouge", in which Baz Luhrmann personally praised his work.
During his stay in Italy he perfected his writing skills with the great master Antonio Fava studying Commedia dell'Arte, the ancient art of storytelling through character archetypes and improvisation. This has given his talented pen an easy fluidity and a characteristic emotional depth. Later, in London, he honed his practice with studies of classic Hollywood screenplays analyzing Wilder, Towne and O'Bannon.
In 2018, after creating and directing a play for the Victoria & Albert Museum, M.A.R.S. Worldwide label asked him to directo the music videos for the cinematic London outfit Komraus. His outstanding directing work with the band has won him an excellent press coverage across Europe as a film director too.
